The entire educational system is bullshitt, the curriculum was not designed with century 21 in mind. Those courses are mostly outdated. People are still being lectured about 9 planets in the solar system, that there are only 3 states of matter etc.

Are these not crazy people?

I will say, study how to make money using 21st century tools. Learn how to build houses, learn how to build phones, learn how to develop AI applications, learn how to make money via ecommerce. Learn to make money online generally. Study health sciences, pharmaceuticals and be useful.

Stop going to school, study online. Stop going to churches or mosques, learn about God online, stop wasting your motherffucking time in classes, it is useless, even if you get a job,
.
the bossiest!
what do you have to say(advice) for engr student? mechatronics engr to be precise.

i will honourably mention @ basalt

a nairalander studying in germany.
he graduated with 2.1 in geophysics, yet, he made his way to germany.
.
you cn followup his thread on travel section.
.
.
let @ gerrard listen,
if you want to japa, study any s.t.e.m courses and get good grade.
.
if you cn't japa or wanna base in 9ja. pls and pls avoid physics, chem, biochem, microbiology etc. they have no particular profession to attach to. except teaching.
but rather, as science student, go study MEDICAL COURSES or in manageably cases engr courses or comp science. dn't study any physical science courses.
.
pls, i beg be wise.
nt everyone know the 'know-how' to japa. not everyone is that exceptional to get a good grade. pls if u ar in any of this category, pls study medical courses. and the benefit is that medical courses aren't classified.
pls forget passion and go 4 what works!

Go on LinkedIn jobs and search for how many jobs exist for your course in Nigeria, Africa and globally.
.
.
now, for those with japa mentality, listen!
your first engr degree doesn't matter!
cos with any engr course, you can venture into ANY I.T course at msc level!
.
all that matters is your cgpa!
.
i have a verifiable fact of a guy who got a fully funded phd scholarship to study informatics in u.s. he has is bsc degree in anatomy at oou.
anatomy to I.T?
.
in as much you study S.T.E.M courses, your first degree doesn't matter alot when applying for a p.graduate courses, esp in I.T(the hotcake).
.
if you are studying pet engr, mat engr, agric engr. dnt be dejected, you have alot of opportunities at P.G level.
.
jst get good grade, and prepare to japa.

@ Gerrard59
.
get to know the difference between professional and non-professional courses.
by default all physical science courses including physics are research base i.e they are academic courses, so they don't fit to any particular industry or profession(except for research/lecturing). get that fact!
.
and again, don't ever compare western education timeframe to what can be obtainable in 9ja.
in the u.k, u.s, engr is 4yrs(good and fine) i.e a 1yr difference.
bt do you knw dat medicine is 5yr in u.k and 4yr in u.s?
then why can't you call medicine a waste of time too?(infact it's 7yrs +nysc in 9ja).
.
even at the undergrad level in nigeria, engr stud'nt have alot of opportunity compared to physics, eg local scholarships.
.
get my fact right! physics is not a profession while engr is. never compare the two in terms of employment opportunity.
.
pls, engage me with verfiable facts and proofs(references if possible).
i'm not interested in unverifiable personal experience or stories.

I did not study any engineering discipline and I finished in the top 1% of my class.
.
haha!
you didn't study engr course?
that says it all.
.
and by the way investment banks are opened to all courses, get that fact!
even in the big 4, any course can apply and work.
.
pls what's the difference btw 4yr and 5yr? as in what makes 5yrs useless compared to 4yrs? cos 5yrs is 10times greater than 4 yrs abi?
.
hello, i heard it's easy to japa for the poor dude. can you elaborate the process involved?

if it's that easy, everyone would have japa naw.

you said medicine has more prospect abroad? pls explain how.

apart from uk, pls cn u explain how a doctor can migrate easily to u.s, germany, canada?
.
the problem i have with you is that you make things easier than they are(disillusioned). you don't speak with fact.
.
for every words i say or counter, i have an obtainable fact to back it up.

The essence of the thread is to let aspiring students know that it is way better studying Physics rather than wait endlessly for engineering courses which are five years (ASUU+ internal issues). Rather than waste so much time, do something which has a shorter time-frame and leave the system. Those (sub)courses can be done at Master level outside Nigeria.
.
do master outside nigeria?
sound easy for that rich dude.
.
but experience should tell you that those 4yr courses are 'hell' to graduate with first class compared to engr!
.
.
but lemme ask, if a poor dude had 2.1 in physics and couldn't secure scholarship to japa. pls what's his fate in 9ja?
dn't tell me oil company. dnt tell me bank.
jst tell me an industry.
.
let me tell you dis. it'll only take a physics grad to open ur eye of which am xpecting on this thread.

God bless you Sir, I don't just understand why the nairaland programmers think maybe engineering and technology is all about programming.

The guys developing artificial heart? The guys working on hvacs and heat pumps? The aerodynamics analyst at airbus? The guys designing the concentrated solar power plants for future energy systems?

This is just to mention few. So far you have a solid GPA in engineering in Nigeria, have a great passion for engineering and not money.

Be realistic!

If 200 people apply for the so called scholarship, how many will get it? Even at P. hD level?

Mind you, 200 is like the average of graduates in each departments in most higher institutions in Nigeria.

How many people will have the so called good grades? Roughly about 70 percent of graduates have 2.2 and below.
.
pls do you know what graduate assistance(G.A) Is all abt. pls research it. getting a fully funded phd is easy via G.A.
.
if ur grade isnt gud enof to get u scholarship or G.A, then go to germany. the tuition is free! for the remaining process? there is a thread for it.
.
pls mind you, anything below 2.1 can venture into i.t skill or entrepreurship.

I am not talking about the chances of mechanical engineering in Nigeria. Nigeria is a failed state, it doesn't matter the course you study in Nigeria.

You people don't understand the essence of this thread.

For one, let me ask, when did you graduate? How many of your colleagues are now mechanical engineering practitioners?

Of course, a fellow with a P. hD can get a scholarship, but what are the chances of a fellow with B. Sc?

On what do you survive before you even think of going for M. Sc especially when you are from a poor home

Even if you got lucky, how about your colleagues who are over 200 in numbers? How about the ones that graduated before or after you?

While in other career path, people are getting more than enough to do with decent compensation.
.
OMG!
i wonder how i'm exposed to things ppl ahead of me arent exposed. pls dedicate time to research.
.
u dnt need to have a phd to obtain scholarsip. what's the need self.
.
in the u.s you can do ur phd without msc. there are tonnes of scholarship and G.A right there. jst get gud grades!
that is why am nt moved

The OP knows very little about engineering, his view is myopic.

Just last week one of my mentor got a PhD schorlarship to do research in material science. She has a master degree in mechanical engineering.

Op thinks engineering is all about programming and artificial intelligence.

I have huge interest in sustainable energy, computational fluid dynamics(aerodynamics, turbulence and combustion), hvacs and thermal behavior of buildings. A first degree in mechanical engineering is one of the best decision of my life.

All engineering courses has equal chances when it comes to traveling out.

They aren't done in core mechanical engineering. There's no mechanical engineering syllabus that has embedded systems and robotics under its core. You don't even have the requirements to take them. You need c++ alongside knowledge of electronics to take embedded systems.

mechatronics or MTE as a course has to do 'majorly' with robotics and artificial intelligence. .
