Charleys: Dont mind the fools, even the city of calabar , the Quas and the Efuts are dragging it with the Efiks! that should tell you how bad the situation is for the Efiks. Not to talk of their position with the Atam people. The real fight is for the Efiks to survive in CRS, but they are busy fighting shadows! like any Akwa ibom person send them. the only reason you see Akwa ibomites in calabar today is because of our properties in calabar most of them inherited from the days when Calabar was the capital of Old CRS. Theres nothing in Calabar again, no jobs, no businesses, the infrastructures are all decripict, bad roads everywhere! calabar is a skeleton of its former self and the Efiks are busy chasing shadows! Nappoli: The Ibibios Have nothing to be jealous of the Efiks for According to the paramout ruler of the Quas, " the Efiks do not fully control any local government area of cross river state! https://punchng.com/as-a-monarch-i-still-lecture-at-the-university-ndidem-of-qua/ even calabar they are dragging with the Efuts and the Quas. the ibibio control over 2/3 of LGAs in Akwa Ibom State. and the ibibios control significant portions of LGAs in cross river state too. so why will we be jealous of our less fortunate rambunctious little cousin(Efiks)? 2 Likes 1 Share |

Nappoli: As one of the kings of the tribes in Calabar, what is your relationship with the Obong of Calabar? I do not have any problem with the Obong. However, from inception, the Obong is the Obong of Efik, not Obong of Calabar. Calabar is made up of the Qua, the Efut and the Efik. If I am known to be the Ndidem of the Qua because I head the Qua tribal group, and the Munene is known as the Munene of the Efut because he heads the Efut tribal group, the Obong should also be known as the Obong of the Efik because he heads the Efik tribal group. The idea of calling him the Obong of Calabar, which is also interpreted as the paramount ruler of the Efik, is a misnomer. This is so because you can be a paramount ruler of a local government area, not the paramount ruler of a tribe. Today, I am the Ndidem of the Qua and paramount ruler of Calabar Municipal LGA, but for him, he is the Obong of the Efik and not the paramount ruler of the Efik because they do not fully control any local government area. Agreed, the Efik people are fortunate to have personalities that spread from local government to state and federal governments and for that reason; they are maintaining the ideology that was mistaken. My relationship would not have interfered with him (Obong of Calabar) if he was managing his affairs without interfacing with mine. It only came to clash when he talked about the nomenclature given to him as the Obong of Calabar by trying to dominate others and extend his authority in the Calabar Municipality, which is the seat of government in the state. Having tried that, he decided to take me to court; but, he lost the case because it can never be. https://punchng.com/as-a-monarch-i-still-lecture-at-the-university-ndidem-of-qua/ now read the bolded and tell me what any Akwa Ibomite should be jealous of? 1 Like |

Nappoli: which Calabar? the city that the Akwa ibomites built? we aint going anywhere, except you buy us out. Akwa Ibomites own 60% of houses and investment in calabar. Since calabar has become bad investment for us , if you can raise the funds we will sale all our properties in calabar to you, but unfortunately we all know you are poor and will not be able to buy us out. until you buy us out, calabar remains Akwa Ibom Real Estate and we aint going nowhere. the haters from Efik land like you will die of heart attack. 3 Likes |

Nappoli: Are there similarities and differences among the three tribes? There are lots of similarities. For the Efut and the Qua, they picked their tradition and culture from the same stalk- from the Bantu environment. For the Efik people, who crossed in here, they came and saw an interesting culture already in existence, one of them decided to approach one of the Efut communities bordering between Ikang and Cameroon and requested to be initiated into the Mgbe society (the traditional authority that is used to maintain the peace and order within where we are). The society has a very rich display at every time that the culture is in place. The man got that privilege to be inducted and given a title. The title they gave him was Iyamba. The man in question was Ekpenyong Offiong, who was a king in Calabar at a point. The area that the Efik people occupied in the beach area was known as Old Calabar. When the man got the privilege and set up his totem and the Mgbe shrine, he was now able to bring in many of his kinsmen to associate with it. Today, that Mgbe shrine is along Iyamba Street in Calabar South. From there, it has expanded to the different Efik tribes and has developed. All the three tribes play the Mgbe in the same manner but with a critical look, I will know the Mgbe that originates from the Efik or Qua or Efut. The views of the paramount ruler of Qua on the Efiks and their origins in Calabar fron an interview he granted Punch newspaper https://punchng.com/as-a-monarch-i-still-lecture-at-the-university-ndidem-of-qua/ |

Calabar has a very rich history, could you tell us how the ancient city came about? The city of Calabar is made up of three tribes – the Qua, Efik and Efut. The Qua people (also known as Ejagam), migrated from Mba-Akang, where everybody in the Ejagam stalk, in the Southern Cameroon, tapped their mineral resources from in order to add value to their economic sustenance. It was then difficult for everybody to tap their resources from the same source when they needed them and it got to a point that it became a rotational issue. It led to an economic crunch. For that reason, the struggle made a lot of the Ejagam people to expand far and wide. The expansion extended from Southern Cameroon to Central Africa, South Africa and West Africa. Majority of the expansion settled around the Cross River Basin, which starts from Obanliku and descends to Bakassi. In the 18 local government areas of Cross River State, you have people of the Ejagam stalk. For those of us who came to Calabar, available records by archaeologists have confirmed that the Ejagam people have been in Calabar since about 900 AD. By implication, it means we have been in Calabar for close to 1,400 years. When we came, we saw the land fertile and good for residential purpose. We stayed and spread ourselves into the different areas of the ancient city. Every Ejagam person did not come as a single family; so, we had a situation where we had various families spread across the land. We have the Akim, Big Qua, Kasuk, Ikpai-Omin, Ikpai-Ohum, Ediba, Nyanghasang, Nkonib, Eta-Nkpinghi, Bakoko, Okpan (known as Odukpani) and Akim-Akim. On the other side leading to Ikang, we have the Ifiang, and Idundu, among others. All these areas have the ancestral totem with them. We have grown in all these places and administered ourselves for a long time before the colonial masters came. The second group that settled in Calabar was the Efut people. They happen to be part of the Bantu stalk who also migrated because of the same struggle for economic survival and when they met the Qua people on the ground, they got our approval to occupy the area that is today known as Calabar South. After some time, the Efik people came in from Uruan area of the present day Akwa Ibom State. They (Efik) initially settled in Creek Town until the time that the twin birth was to be abrogated. When it was still a taboo for a woman to give birth to twins, the daughter of the then Efik king had relationship with an Efut king that stayed within the Creek Town, and she gave birth to twins. They wanted to save the babies, that was how the uncle to those children helped to pick their mother and took them to the creeks of the Qua land. The area is called Nse Ntanda, which means the mangrove forest. The water shores of Calabar are all guarded by mangrove trees- that was where these babies grew up and became adults. They developed the skills of paddling canoe, fishing and swimming. In one of the attempts to fish into the bigger water from the creek, they paddled and crossed from the other shore of the Calabar River to the areas where they are found today in Calabar. By the time they crossed, they knew they had got to the real river known in Efik land as Ata Akpa. When they came, they met the Qua people who were still doing their hunting and farming work. The Qua people close to them referred to the Efik people as Abakpa, coined from Bakpa, which means ‘Come here’. When they continuously saw the affirmative signal indicating that they should come close, they approached the people and told them (Qua people) that they had found the environment as a good one and requested to settle here. They were given the permission to settle along the creeks for their economic survival, since they were fishermen. These three tribes have developed over the years within Calabar since 1734 when the Efik people crossed in. We have continued to survive cordially still. The reason for the peaceful co-existence is because the three tribes know their boundaries and where they control. Although outsiders may be looking for ways to incite us, because we have principles that guide us, we do not give room for that. This is the story of Calabar. https://punchng.com/as-a-monarch-i-still-lecture-at-the-university-ndidem-of-qua/ 2 Likes |

Nkanga is a Prophet! what the elders can see sitting down, the youths cannot see on top of an Iroko tree. PANDEF is lucky to have you as a leader, you saw this coming since 2015 and you were bold enough to tell Nigerians but as usual they didn't believe the Minority report, now they are paying the price. In Akwa Ibom and most of of the South South Buhari was rejected twice in 2015 and 2019 and we are proud that we did not give this evil government our vote. 7 Likes |
