Sports / Vandrezzer Fc Gives Ikot Ekpene Stadium Face-lift by Atouke: 4:22am On Feb 03, 2020
The 5,000 capacity township stadium in Ikot Ekpene District of Akwa Ibom state, Nigeria is currently receiving a face-lift courtesy five months old NNL club Vandrezzer FC.

The contract for the face-lift worth millions of Naira was awarded by Vandrezzer FC to local contractors in the state.

The implementation is in two phases : the first phase involves the ongoing regrassing (planting) of the pitch, daily watering and supply of nutrients.

The second phase will take care of daily, proper maintenance for effective pitch preservation before, during and after use.

According to the workers, the pitch will be in great shape and will ready in few weeks, hopefully before the NNL resumes for the year 2020.

This pitch project is in addition to painting of the entire stadium, restructuring of all dressing rooms, renovation of stands, fixing of technical benches and refurbishing of other parts of the facility, which were carried out before the close of last year.

The stadium which is also home to NNL side Ibom Youth FC & NLO club Cofine FC, is already wearing new look as against five months ago, when Vandrezzer FC became tenants. This is to the adoration of the home fans who are full of praises for the club management.

Although the state Football Association is yet to completely handover the management of the stadium to the privately owned club, the Lions’ are known for a culture of excellence with the aim of projecting standard and quality football as what is obtainable in other climes.

Plans are in the pipeline to construct the Vandrezzer FC Stadium, which will be situated in either Uyo or Lagos.

Politics / GIAS 2020: UAE, Others To Invest In Akwaibom Aviation Sector by Atouke: 2:26am On Feb 02, 2020
The just-concluded 2020 Global Investment in Aviation Summit that took place in the United Arab Emirates has showcased Akwa Ibom State as the next-big-thing in Nigeria’s aviation industry to the world.

Akwa Ibom became the centre of attraction at the when Governor Udom Emmanuel led a high powered delegation to the Summit to present the ample investment opportunities to big players in the aviation industry, where “a lot of them have shown interest in the completion and running of the Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility at the Victor Attah International Airport.”

At the GIAS 2020 Summit, which recorded breaking number of activities including Aviation Finance and Airport Project Finance Master Classes where talks on Aircraft Investment, Fleet Management, PPP Business Models, Airport Future Solutions, Governor Emmanuel hinted that his administration sees “aviation as a strategic income stream and as such is doing its best to take advantage of it. We have created an investor-friendly environment. Our home carrier, Ibom Air, is receiving attention globally.

Governor Emmanuel, who also thrilled participants at the Summit when he presented Akwa Ibom’s economic potentials and the many incentives put in place by this administration to make Akwa Ibom attractive for investors, added that his administration was a commitment to diversify the state’s economy,

He explained to investors at the Summit, who were turbocharged to invest in the state, that with the much-needed investment, the sector, which boasts of a home carrier, has the potential to, directly and indirectly, employ millions Akwa Ibom youths, boost the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), among others

Yes Akpabio's stadium will suffer for this one. That's the mentality of the Nigerian politician, obviously Gov Udom Emmanuel regrets agreeing to rename The Nes of Champions after Akpabio, which was the plan of Akpabio when he was building the stadium ,he only refrained from naming it after himself while in office as it would have been improper and would generate a huge uproar, I think rather than embark on the duplication of project, Udom Emmanuel should just have reversed imself by renaming the stadium again as The Nest of champions. If Akpabio wan die make he go die

How can a 17,000 seater stadium in a district capital of eket replace a 30,000 seater stadium in the state capital.
Some of you just say things before you think.

I leave you with your ignorant hype. It's good to hype but dont spread ignorance in case of hype.

I've read your post all through. It's good you are happy with what your governor is doing in building stadiums, what I dont get is the ignorance you are displaying in several areas of your comment.

It baffles me for someone to be jubilating about 191MW of power generation and stadium.
It's time we start celebrating more meaning achievements in this country. This is 21st century. Things like this should be celebrated by individuals not state.
States are bigger than this mediocrity.

Because I punctured your lies!
This is no hype akwa ibom is reality. There are several countries in Africa that don't have what we have in akwa ibom state. Several countries dont generate even up to 191MW power which is 3 times the electricity needs of akwa ibom.
Most countries in including Nigeria does not have an airline, Akwa ibom state does, it also owns and operates it's own airport.
Most countries dont have sea port Akwa ibom is in the process of building one and most countries dont have stadium like the Godswill Akpabio stadium.
The kind of road network in Akwa ibom is mesmerizing.
To cap it all it has the hydrocarbons to drive its economy.
If Akwa ibom were to be country it will be a great country.
This is not hype but reality.

Some hype doesn't make sense. Every State in the niger delta have the capacity of supplying 24/7 power for their people. But the national grid will not allow that.

Even some states in the north can do that as well. The total of 381MW generated from the 2 power plants in AKS is still very small compared to what states like Rivers, Delta, Abia, Niger and Taraba generates. These states generates over 1000MW each.

People like you lack knowledge but pretend that they know what's is obvious the dont.

Mention any state in Nigeria that owns its power generating company besides Akwa ibom state via ibom power plant, and mention the power generation company name. So others can verify.

Only rivers state government built power plant but Gov. AMECHI sold them to tonye Cole company.

Others have federally funded or private power companies.
Mini plant / generators that Lagos and cross river state built dont count. As none of them can supply one local government not to talk of the whole state.

Ibom power plant has the capacity that can supply the whole of Akwa ibom, abia, bayelsa and cross river state combined. If the FG was not taking Akwa ibom power to the national grid.

Any well meaning individual with knowledge of developmental economics or anyone who has read the book "The Prosperity Paradox" will know that this project is stoopid and meaningless. Economic development/empowerment comes before recreational facilities or amusement centres. You need to have residents with the purchasing power and accompanied education to use these places. Someone asked "you know how many stadia dey London?". I ask, do you how many middle class dey London? Does Akwa Ibom state have a quarter of London's middle class (mere numbers not purchasing power)?

The gigantic hotels, shopping centres, restaurants constructed etc. everywhere are facing low patronage because the residents don't have money. Coldstone Creamery opened in Calabar probably because residents there spend more than their neighbours. Meanwhile, PaCreams struggles to get customers even when there is no competition. Eket does not need a stadium when the roads there are horrible and no pedestrian walkway. What the state needs are: lower taxes (currently the state has one of the highest taxes for SMEs), a well driven plan to invite investors to build proper industries not tissue paper whatsoever etc. The state has a good road infrastructure and is relative safe compared to say Calabar or Port Harcourt but more is needed considering how rich she is. I say this because I really pity the young men who look clearly (under)unemployed and depend on f00lish Dakkada politics to survive.
Everyone must start somewhere, primary school kids dont stop going to school because they see people in their communities that have PHDs
They understand that eventually they will get there if they keep building their academic profile.

You dont stop building because others have built better. England started somewhere before they got to where they are today in football.
Am glad Akwa ibom is gradually building its sports industry.

Na stadium Akwa Ibom people go chop. What happened to the one in Uyo. Seriously misplaced priorities.

You don't just carry out a project without impact assessment. Where is the market for football in Akwa Ibom. In England, football is big business, from gambling to TV rights, that's why you see stadia everywhere. It's a huge export commodity for them. Here in Nigeria, where is that kind of market to warrant building of stadia.

Concentrate on opening your seaports Mr. Udom. It will add value your people more.
You must be hungry hence everything must be about stomach infrastructure to you.
Not everyone is focused on stomach.

On comparison with England, England football did not start having everything in place, they started somewhere, akwa ibom is taking steps toward building its sport infrastructure.

African leaders are very wicked they use all means to render the masses poor so they could buy them with #5 during elections.

What's the usefulness of this stadium if I may ask? The money used in this stadium if it's been put into Agriculture it'll create employment and reduce crime. But if the masses feed well no one will do the dirty job again during elections for peanuts. The stadium Akpabio built in Awka ibom how many lives is the stadium sustaining today?

These Leaders are vision less what we need now is industries and SMe loans.

Show me a state government that has invested more in agriculture than Gov. Udom emmanuel?
Have you heard of
1).st. Gabriel coconut plantation and refinery?
2). Cassava processing plants over 10 in the state
3). Ibom integrated farms a Songhai styled farm.
4). Reactivation of Akw palm estate , the biggest palm oil eastate in west Africa.
5).500 ,tonnes per day kings flour mill.
6). Agriculture green house project by the airport.
7). Akwa prime poultry and hatchery the biggest poultry hatchery in south south and southeast Nigeria.
cool ibom Agricon rice mill and plantation .
9). Cocoa processing factory and plantation in ini lga
10).3 palm oil/kernels processing factories.
12) AKEES the best of them all ask any young akwa ibomite what Akees stands for! The program that has brought more young people into agriculture bussiness than any in this country.

This are just a few I can remember. Show me a state that has done more in agriculture development in Nigeria, I will be glad to put gov.udoms record against such governor for Nigerians to judge.

I doubt the whole of AKS has a road network of up to that. The township roads are OK except IBB way due to poor drainage, even the road from Uyo to Onna is not up to 200km.
Please check yr facts again.

You should be the one to do the checking. Am satisfied with what the state government is doing.

Yes. They use Desso Grassmaster, which I think is the best surface at the moment.

But they will only install what the state government paid them to install.

If they paid for hybrid then uyo township stadium will get hybrid turf, but if the state paid for standard artificial turf, that's what monimichelle will install.

If it's handled by Moni Michelle, then it's probably hybrid, rather than artificial (the turf at the Enyimba Stadium and Onikan Stadium are hyrbid).

That I don't know, if its hybrid or plain artificial.
But going by what they have done in other stadium, I know moni Michelle will do a good job at the Uyo township stadium.

That's the only possible mistake. They should do what Governor Akpabio did with the Akpabio International Stadium.

While the stadium was under construction, Governor Akpabio invited lots of experts to visit it regularly. These experts included Nigerian journalists, former footballers, etc. On one of those inspection tours, Governor Akpabio told Stephen Keshi that the stadium would have an artificial turf. Keshi screamed and advised the governor that it would be much better if the stadium had natural grass. The governor took Keshi's advice and the stadium was given a natural grass surface and nurseries were set up to grow the grass that was needed to resurface the stadium whenever the need arose.

It'll be better if these stadia have natural grass or hybrid pitches.

AKWA ibom already have 3 standard grass turf.
The Godswill Akpabio stadium and the training pitch.
Ikot Ekpene stadium has grass turf.

So what we need in the new stadium are artificial pitches.
The uyo township stadium is handled by moni Michelle, the company that fixed enyimba, bayelsa, bauchi and onikan stadium pitch. So it will be good.

The Eket stadium will have a standard artificial turf.
This will balance off so if the players are going to be facing opponents that play in grass turf, they can practice in grass, if they are facing and opponents that plays on artificial turf they can also practice on artificial turf.

Presently Akwa ibom state has no artificial turf stadium, but by the end of the year they will have two.

In a normal society, every local government ought to have a stadium .

Most secondary schools in the western world especially USA have their own stadiums, not to talk of Universities.

But Nigeria is not a normal society. Sports is big big business.

Some Nigerians dont understand this. Sports is business thats why our athletes are fleeing Abroad, because Nigeria has refused to invest in sports.

Thank God Akwa ibom state government is trying it's best to set up befitting sports infrastructures to encourage sports development.

Last I checked ibom science park is a private investment owned by the Chinese business group the blue sea group.
The Chinese are working at their pace.

Go watch the speech of the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria on the day the ibom science park project was inaugurated, he told the company to complete the project on schedule and to specifications. He said it was not an appeal but an order. If there is something the Chinese are good at its obeying order from their superiors. I am sure the ibom science park is in good hands.

Akwa ibom is the state that attracts the second highest foreign direct investment in Nigeria after Lagos that NBS statistics, its because we have a governor who is first a business man before being a politician. He understands the role of private sector in state development.

Who remembers this club and will like to see it make a comeback?

Oh what a rivalry Uyo and Eket use to have then on match days.

Most of the times its always news of how teams are not getting sponsorship by the private sector in Nigeria.
But this is good news, is something changing?
In Akwa ibom state there are 2 football clubs playing in the Nigerian premier league. The teams are Akwa United and Dakkada FC formerly called Akwa Starlets.

This two teams seems to have sponsorship with airlines operating from the state,
Akwa United enjoys sponsorship from Dana Air
While Dakkada FC enjoys sponsorship from Ibom air.

While the full details of the sponsorship is not known, but what is visible is that these teams enjoy freerides (flight) from these airlines for games played in destinations that these airlines fly to.

This is goodnews and these companies should be encouraged and applauded for their efforts while fans should encourage more companies to do more too.

What are the Akwa ibom teams doing right to attract this sponsorships? Or is there a shift in sponsorship in the Nigerian football space?
