Gold45: Thanks for covering up for me. I sense experience in your replies. Are you a HR? Are you open to networking? No I am not in HR. I was once unemployed and it took a lot of soul searching, observing people and being open to criticisms to get me to where I am today. I really do like your posts and I am happy that you didn't feel I was encroaching on your territory. I am certainly open to networking and I am willing to pass on my experiences and advice to anyone who is willing to listen. I don't consider myself a pro but I think I have something to bring to the table. |

amicable09: Thanks Aude for speaking in favor of these HR personnel but truth still remains I am confident about my capabilities and I have a very positive mindset. One of which is whoever I finally ACCEPT to be my employer will be at an advantage and to all those companies that have sent regret mails... it's their loss not mine.
When it comes to recruitment in Nigeria the process can be altogether crazy and of course these recruiters who keep acting like they know it all and can read through the minds of prospective employees, how wrong they can be! No wonder, they recruit people with rehearsed lines and fake accent... lol. After one month, they will still return here to lament. I'll keep watching, I understand no one will be unemployed for life so very soon I will also be recruiting others, chikina! Life na turn by turn. There's a saying that if you can't beat them you should join them (paraphrased). You have noticed that people with rehearsed lines seem to be getting the jobs, so why don't you rehearse those same lines? Trust me these recruiters have heard all those rehearsed lines but as typical human beings they like being flattered. It shows you very much want the job. I used to have your same mindset and kept on wondering why I wasn't hired although I had a lot to offer. A lovely Nigerian recruiter critiqued my interviewing skills and I took on board everything she said. I am not Nigerian. Not long after our conversation I went for two interviews and I got offered both jobs. I am currently in the position that I felt was a better fit and obviously paid better. That is why I suggested that you have someone critique your interviewing skills. I also hope that the day you become a hiring manager you remember to choose the person with great potential, not the one who is just regurgitating what they have read online. I wish you all the best in your job search. |

beyondwalls: Hi Op,
Kindly advise on this case. What are the factors that could be responsible for going through shortlisting, getting to the final stage of the recruitment process and in the end getting sorry mail. This has happened about 5 times in the past one year with top companies. The most annoying part is most of the times i find it hard to pick what i did or said wrong during the interview. It's just so depressing. There were probably better candidates. I understand it is very frustrating but never lose hope. Remember that you are not the only candidate fighting for this position. Don't forget to write a thank you letter and reiterate your interest in the job. Also mention what you hope to bring to the position. |
Jobs/Vacancies › Re: Pains Of A Recruiter / HR Mgr by Aude(f): 5:51pm On Oct 30, 2015 |
sochima1989: well recruiters also end up hiring wrong candidates when you expect them to rehearse very well their line before meeting the oh great same question panel. am an example of a candidate what underwent the whole stage from 30 to 15 to 5 to 3 and unfortunately got the job. I resigned after a month cos employers have worse problems(not all though) And when you need a pillar to rely on, your recruiters are not there. If only recruiters can take their time not only looking for qualified candidates but also telling the candidates what to expect from their employers it will be good. I have not met an employer willing to give me my dream job and as u said worth but i have learned to create that myself. RECRUITERS PLEASE THE ISSUE IS NOT WITH YOU BUT THE WOLVES YOU SEND US TO....... IF YOU WANT IT TO BE BUSINESS AS USUAL THEN THE IN/CHASE/RUN STYLE WILL CONTINUE.......BUT IF YOU DESIRE TO SOLVE SOME OF THE PROBLEMS YOU LISTED ABOVE, THERE IS A LITTLE PART YOU MUST PLAY.........DEFEND YOUR CANDIDATES. Am a customer service personnel, i wanna learn, i wanna do more, i wanna earn my worth but maybe by myself That is why you have an interview. It is not only about the employer asking you questions but you also asking questions. For example when you ask why the position you are applying for is vacant, you can tell by the reactions and answers of the interviewers whether the former employee's departure was amicable. Research questions that employees should ask at the end of an interview. At the end of the interview you should be able to conclude whether you think the company good fit for you. I can see you work in customer service. That's a difficult job and it is made worse by the fact that you guys tend to be easily replaceable. The best thing for you is try to always be courteous to your clients and your managers will certainly notice your professionalism. |

amicable09: Dear HR manager, sorry in as much as you are pained, we are also more pained. One of these days I will write an article and post my pains too. Truth is we don't know what you recruiters want! I've noticed your preferences vary as well as the CVs and Cover Letters.
We apply and get short listed, you bomb us with questions during the aptitude test that has no relationship whatsoever with the job role. Fortunately, we ace the test and are invited for an interview then you make the interview look like a war zone... very hostile looking panel throwing questions at you, other times you meet other HR Mgrs who simply act as though they are doing you a favor, haba! Me, I tire for all of these attitude sef. If there is a particular thing you are looking for just say it! if you want to pay a graduate 20k because we studied in Nigeria then say it as well, it is not when we say what we want then you will post us to a later date,, Next week! Not fair jare I understand that it can be frustrating for jobseekers and some HR personnel can be very mean. In terms of aptitude test they are testing your suitability for the job. They are also testing your ability to learn and adapt to different situations. At work you meet challenges frequently and if the panel appears to be hostile it is because they are testing you. They want to see how you deal with pressure. Are you a confident person? Practise and develop your interview skills with friends and family members. Also dispose of that mindset that HR managers are not doing you a favour. It is better to have an HR manager on your side rather than against you. |

sakalisis: Hi OP
I am a freelance technology (Phone) researcher and entreprenuer, am a certified Java programmer coupled with my knowledge of phone and laptop repairs. I also graduated with a strong 2.1 in Physics Electronics from the best technology university in Nigeria.
My email is sakalisis@yahoo.com. I will be looking forward tp your reply.
Thanks. There are a couple of mistakes in your post. Entrepreneur and not entrepreneur. There should be a full stop after entrepreneur and it should be "I am a certified Java programmer ...". To and not tp It is not enough to say that you graduated from the "best technology university in Nigeria." That is very subjective. Why don't you state the name of the university? Also I know a lot of people don't want to give out a lot of information about themselves in a public forum so in this situation I would advise that you should have asked the op for her email address and then sent out a well-constructed CV. Also there is nothing like a strong or weak 2:1 degree. |

Merci beaucoup! What's the job you are applying for? What university did you attend? What is your previous experience? You are certified in French but can you speak the language fluently? Everyone these days has some level of knowledge of Microsoft Office so that does not set you apart from the other applicants. What is your level of proficiency in the different Microsoft office applications. If you are an advanced user then that's great. What else do you have to offer any company. I know this is an informal forum but sometimes we need to be more serious about the things we post on any forum. A recruiter could be online and admire what you have posted. Honestly if I was a recruiter I would not seek to have a conversation because you haven't addressed the key points I mentioned above. Also I don't want have to draw these answers from you. Time is money and first impressions matter. I hope you are open to receiving this constructive criticism. |

[quote author=Toks2008 post=39409626]1.Can i remain a celibate forever? 2.Is there a guarantee that the next man will not do same or even worse? 3.As a sexually active lady who is out of my marriage is it really worth it leaving a cheating husband to start sleeping around with men that may likely be cheating with me on their ladies too?
These are the questions that make women stay in loveless relationships and then end up being bitter in their old age. What's the point in sleeping with a man who does not respect his matrimonial vows and thus putting oneself at risk of getting aids or STDs? What if by staying in the relationship the woman is missing out on experiencing what true love is? Women have left bad relationships and met good men thereafter. Also a woman can wait to make sure that she is in an exclusive relationship with a man before sleeping with him. Women are not firewood and there is no reason why they should not satisfy their sexual desires. |

bronzegoddess: How did she insult her? She stated low self esteem abi na lie self esteem, and I totally agree. Only low self esteem can make a woman keep quiet like the aunt did. He said criticizing, u shld also criticize those insulting her for her comment too, don't forget to do so, mr critic. Thank you so much. I am so happy when I read from people that reason like you. How does saying someone has low self-esteem relate to an insult? Especially as the aunt kept the fact that she had seen her husband with another lady for three months. If that is not low self-esteem then we need to coin a new term for that kind of behavior. Most of these men praising the op's aunt would not tolerate infidelity from their wives. |

TroubadourM: It's not like I don't believe in one gaining experience from underpaid jobs. Myself I did some volunteer stuffs during school days, like volunteered, no salary, only small perks. But see how everyone in here called the guy names for even daring to think twice about the job? Some even said he's a "mumu" for asking the question in the first place. Now I understand your viewpoint. You should also understand that there are a lot of people looking for jobs and they can't understand that someone who has been looking for a job for at least a year is not grabbing an opportunity that has been offered to him. They don't have the luxury of choice so cannot understand the hesitation. I still think it is a good position and maybe the dilemma the OP is facing is "what will his friends say about this position?" I am sure when he gets his first paycheck and is able to get a gift for his mom he will forget about his misconceptions about the position. |
Jobs/Vacancies › Re: As A Graduate, Can You Work In Restaurant That Pays 80k And Above? by Aude(f): 2:38pm On Sep 28, 2015 |
TroubadourM: The situation of the country has so much watered down our perception of self value, so even if the job doesn't give him any room for both professional & self improvement in the next decade he should jump on it because he heard 80k? Op the answer to this question lies within, do you have any other plans? Or you just job hunting? No meaningful answer to your questions can come from people out there, hardship don reconfigure our mental state. Chai oluwa wa o. No one has said he should stay in the job forever. He has no experience and he expects to be given a corporate job. A lot of the people you see in corporate positions also did blue collar jobs. What most employers are looking for is experience and professionalism. Even doing blue collar jobs gives people experience and teaches them workplace etiquette. It is this mentality that is killing Africans. They think because they have a certificate with their name on it they should be handed cushy jobs. University education in Africa does not prepare graduates for the real world. Some of the wealthy people in Europe and North America make their kids work in stores and holiday camps just because they want them to learn how to be responsible. @OP take this job. You will learn a lot and since this is a customer-facing job you will learn how to deal with pressure. You will also be getting leadership experience. I am speaking from experience. Even the jobs that I considered to be below my pay grade taught me a lot of what I know now. I am in a corporate position right now but I still draw on my experiences from my previous jobs. You may even decide to go back to school and do a masters in hotel management. Most career paths are never straight. |
