The 7.0 magnitude quake collapsed or damaged many buildings. The search for buried subjects is still ongoing. In a severe earthquake in the Aegean Sea, several buildings collapsed and people were buried in western Turkey. According to the Turkish TV broadcaster TRT, according to information so far, at least four people were killed, around 150 injured, around 70 have already been rescued from the rubble, and more have been buried. According to media reports, eight injured people have been treated in a hospital on the Greek island of Samos. Both there and on the Turkish west coast, the water burst its banks after the quake, and there have already been several aftershocks. The first quake had a magnitude of 6.6, according to the Turkish National Disaster Agency. The USGS, which is responsible for earthquakes, even stated the strength of the quake as 7. The center was located in the Aegean Sea off the Turkish province of Izmir, about 16 kilometers north of the Greek island of Samos, reported Turkish and Greek media. TRT showed pictures of collapsed apartment buildings and clouds of dust over the city of Izmir. Panic was reported in the streets during the quake and telephone connections were down. In Greece , the island of Samos was particularly affected, and there was a tsunami in the small town of Vathy. Greek television stations showed pictures of the flooded coastal promenade, where the water washed away cars. The power went out. Flooded streets could also be seen in pictures from Seferihisar, Turkey. In an interview with TRT, experts warned of a possible further tsunami. Earthquake institutes are already reporting on the first aftershocks further west of the main quake, several of them over 4. The German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) in Potsdam also reported on the “severe earthquake with a tsunami” on Friday afternoon. According to GFZ calculations, the waves reached heights of more than 1.5 meters. They could possibly come up to three meters high on the coast. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan addressed the population in a tweet. Help the people affected by the earthquake by all means. In Greece, the deputy minister for civil protection is on his way to Samos. According to various reports, the quake should have been felt in the Turkish metropolis of Istanbul and as far as the Greek capital Athens. SOURCE: GISTBABA.COM

Refugees are registered with fingerprints in Europe as if they were criminals Racist prejudice still lurks in AI systems. The reason: Artificial intelligence is also made by people. Until recently, anyone applying for a visa in the UK was screened by an algorithm. The software assigns a green, yellow, or red risk rating to every applicant who wants to enter the country for a study or tourist stay. The automated process was suspended by the responsible home office in early August. The reason: the algorithm was racist. The authority is said to have kept a secret list of “suspicious nationalities” that were automatically given a red risk rating. Afterward, the civil rights organization Foxglove spoke of a “speedy boarding for white people”. While whites were waved through by the algorithmic border guards, blacks apparently had to pass a security check. A brutal selection. It is not the first time that algorithms discriminate against black people. In 2015, for example, Google’s photo app tagged an African American and his girlfriend as “gorillas”. As if humans were monkeys. Algorithms still have problems recognizing African American faces – the error rate is up to ten times higher than that of whites, as numerous studies have shown. But instead of optimizing its models, Google simply removed the categories “gorilla”, “chimpanzee” and “monkey” – and thus “solved” the problem. Technology isn’t advanced enough to be unbiased, so you blind it. An epistemological sleight of hand. This does not solve the problem of course – it is of a structural nature. Machines that are trained by humans with racially distorted data reproduce stereotypes. When police officers guided by prejudice check African Americans in certain neighborhoods, predictive policing software sends the emergency services to these neighborhoods over and over again, perpetuating racial profiling because the models are fed with distorted data. Automated systems cement stereotypes. A vicious circle. FULL DETAILS FROM-SOURCE: GISTBABA.COM |

The US secret services have been observing attacks on government computers in the states and municipalities since September. They suspect that the goal is to influence the presidential election – or the political debate afterward. Russian hackers have been attempting a broad-based attack since September to break into the computers and networks of American authorities with a view to the upcoming presidential election. As the Federal Police FBI and the Ministry of Homeland Security’s cybersecurity agency (Cisa) announced on Friday night, dozens of attacks were directed against government institutions in states and municipalities as well as networks in the aviation industry. They started out from “state-supported” groups, namely a hacker group known as the Berserk Bear or Dragonfly 2.0. According to the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, these hackers are also behind an attack on the networks of German energy companies and power grid operators and are said to have carried out similar attacks in the USA. US ELECTIONS: Supreme Court rejects the mail-ballot bid-Tucker Carlson claims ‘damning’ Biden data lost The US Supreme Court dealt a blow to Donald Trump’s campaign on Wednesday by granting North Carolina an extended deadline to count mail-in ballots, giving the state until 12 November to calculate its total and overriding Republican objections in a win for state Democrats who are thought to be more likely to vote by post. The president’s Fox News media ally Tucker Carlson has meanwhile attracted derision after claiming on air that he had “damning” documents about the family of Democratic challenger Joe Biden, whom he accuses of corrupt business dealings overseas, but that he could not broadcast them because they “suddenly vanished” in the mail. Mr Trump himself was on the campaign trail in Arizona yesterday, where he attacked ex-Homeland Security official Miles Taylor after he came forward and revealed himself to be “Anonymous”, the author of an insider account of the dysfunctional workings of the Trump administration that was published in The New York Times in September 2018. Anonymous hacks Trump's campaign website a few hours after the US rejects Nigeria's Okonjo as director-general of WTO Anonymous hacks Trump’s campaign website a few hours after the US rejects Okonjo as director-general of WTO Anonymous hackers have hacked into the website of Donald Trump’s election campaign and demanded payment in cryptocurrency. This happened a few hours after Washington vowed not to recognize Nigeria’s Okonjo Iweala as the new director-general of WTO. The site of the election campaign of US President Donald Trump has been hacked briefly. On Tuesday evening, when you clicked on the “Events” category, the statement appeared: “This site has been confiscated. The world has had enough of the fake news that President Donald J. Trump spreads every day.” This was followed by unsubstantiated allegations against the American government and against Donald Trump himself. At the top of the side were the logos of the American Federal Police FBI and the US Department of Justice. The alleged hackers demanded the deposit of cryptocurrency for compromising information about Trump, which also made the incident look like an attempted fraud. After a few minutes, however, the statements and allegations disappeared and the site was back to normal. The background was initially unclear. Trump’s election campaign team confirmed the hack in the evening. It was working with law enforcement agencies to find the perpetrators, a statement said. Sensitive data were not in danger because they were “not stored on the site”. According to the Reuters news agency, the FBI initially did not want to comment on the incident. Nigeria’s Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala was slated to be the new Director-General of the World Trade Organization. She will be the first woman, and the first African, to lead the institution. But there was an unexpected glitch in the process. In a last-ditch move, the United States representative at World Trade Organization took to the floor to insist that South Korea’s candidate remained a contender and that Washington will not recognize Okonjo-Iweala as the consensus candidate for appointment as director-general. In response to this, the General Counsel has postponed its announcement of the new Director-General until a further meeting, which is scheduled for 9 November; after the US presidential elections. A panel at the WTO recommended her today for the position. Today’s announcement that Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is to be the new director-general of the World Trade Organization would have been a tremendous boost for Africa and lines her up for one of the toughest jobs in the international system. READ MORE Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala: “If we didn’t have the WTO we would have to invent it.” Our sources in Geneva say that she had won the support from the vast majority of member states, including the EU, Japan and China, but not the United States. She will have to lead the charge for a revival of multilateralism, in the negotiating chambers of the WTO and for a better deal for developing economies, as well as for the practical matter of how reforming trade and patent rules can allow the distribution of life-saving vaccines and therapeutics as the coronavirus pandemic rips across the world on its second wave. As the first woman and African to head the trade body, Okonjo-Iweala has shattered a couple of ceilings at the same time. She also has a chance to put Africa’s plans to build the world’s biggest free trade area on the top table, pointing to the product and market opportunities on the continent. At the same time, she has won the race for the job from hell. That much was clear when her predecessor – Brazil’s Robert Azevêdo – quit the post early after years of frustration at the logjams in negotiation on reforming the WTO. Those negotiations have been made harder still by the eruption of a trade war between the US and China alongside sporadic outbreaks of economic nationalism across the globe. READ MORE WTO: Who is backing Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala’s bid? Surely this must be the worst time to take over an organization dedicated to multilateral trade agreements, The Africa Report asked Okonjo-Iweala during the campaign. “Multilateralism has never been needed more than now,” she said. “The COVID-19 pandemic has shown that this is the time we need to act in solidarity to have multilateral solutions because there are simply some things in the world that bilateral or even sub-regional solutions cannot solve.” On the distribution of vaccines and drugs to fight the pandemic, Okonjo-Iweala said she would prioritize open access: “Being involved in COVID-19 and vaccines now as the chair of GAVI and an envoy on the Act accelerator, I’m seeing it from the front lines and we want to make sure that we don’t have a situation where access to vaccines for other countries where they are not made is blocked … The world is so interconnected now that no one is safe until everyone is safe, and no country is safe until all countries are safe.” This, she acknowledged, will take tough negotiations with the drugs companies and with national governments but she insisted it would take top priority: “This is an area where we really need to think through the trade regime and the rules that will govern these kinds of products, whilst respecting country’s desires to do a minimum for their security.” SOURCE: The US vows never to recognize Okonjo Iweala’s appointment as the New WTO director-general |

Niger Delta Militants Group RNDA issues 11 point agenda for multinational oil companies in Nigeria Warri Militant groups from the nine states of the Niger Delta region, which vowed to resume hostilities, last Monday in support of #EndSARS protests, triggered fresh anxiety, weekend, as it presented 11 new demands to the Federal Government. Leader of the Reformed Niger Delta Avengers, RNDA, popularly known as “Major General” Johnmark Ezonebi, via an Email stated the coalition had communicated multinational oil companies to evacuate their staff to avoid fatal causalities. RNDA said: “In support of the existing demands by the #EndSARS protesters, we have added new demands that could stop the mayhem on foreign oil multinationals, oil and gas infrastructures, and the Joint Military Task Force involved in the Operation Crocodile Smile in the region.” “We have vowed to take the destiny of our region into our hands and kick-start the occupation of all the major oil wells and the oil platforms, we will also bring down all major crude oil production pipelines to zero,” it added. First on the demands of the RNDA is: “Urgent release of the N98 billion gas flare penalty fund to the host communities of the Niger Delta, which are funds domiciled in the Federation Accounts through the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, by the International Oil Companies, IOCs, as payment to compensate the communities being affected in the creeks of the Niger Delta due to their environmental pollutions and environmental hazard caused the multinational oil companies.” “Secondly, we demand the total control of our God-given resources in the region. If some parts of northern states are allowed to operate and will be given license to engage in illegal mining and sale of gold, it means it is time the people of the Niger Delta region, especially the Ijaw ethnic nationality be given equal opportunity to go ahead with artisan and local refining of crude oil in the creeks without any form of intimidation and harassment from the Nigerian government as well. “Thirdly, RNDA demands that riverine areas in Niger Delta be connected to the cities with roads and bridges with provisions in the 2021 budget. A road project for instance should connect Warri to Ogulagha, Burutu local government area, which is a host to Forcardos Terminal, producing over one million barrels of crude oil that contribute trillions of dollars to the federal government on daily basis. “Fourthly, the proposed 2021 budget, which appropriated billions of naira to the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio, and the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, should be withdrawn and put on hold and the Minister of the Niger Delta Affairs should not be allowed to defend the proposed budget until the substantive board of the NDDC is inaugurated and sworn in by President Muhammadu Buhari. “We also demand that Senator Godswill Akpabio be mandated to hold a town hall meeting with the traditional rulers, stakeholders, and leadership of RNDA militant group in the creek in order to show a genuine intention that the budget proposal will not witness embezzlement and diversion of billions to Akpabio and his cronies’ pockets without any tangible and practical development in the creeks of the region.” “And we also demand immediate take-off and re-opening of the Burutu Seaport by the federal government, which should be included in the 2021 budget. “More importantly to the RNDA militant group, we call for an emergency review of the Revenue Allocation Act in other to give a proper interpretation of the 13 percent derivation funds that will not be deposited in the hands of the so-called inhuman wicked corrupt minded Niger Delta governors that has been pocketing the billions of naira on monthly basis from the federation allocation account without getting to the oil-producing communities in the creeks of Niger Delta and without any accountability to the long-neglected emancipated oil-producing communities that are the original owners of the 13 percent derivation funds, according to section 162 subsection 2 of the 1991 constitution as amended. “So we demand proper interpretation of this Act by the Attorney General of the Federation as to the chief law officer of the country because the people of the Niger Delta oil-producing communities are tired of this perpetual man-made injustice caused by the so-called Niger Delta callous inhuman wicked and corrupt minded governors. “We also called for a review of the four-point agreement with the Host Communities of Nigeria, HOSTCOM, which was submitted to the federal government by the national chairman, Prince Mike Emuh, and has not been approved up till date. The provisions of the agreement which include 10,000 pipeline surveillance jobs to the oil-producing communities through the leadership of HOSTCOM has not been approved. “Yet the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC went ahead to award pipeline surveillance contract to one individual, Chief Captain Hosa Wells Okunbor, who is the managing director of Ocean Marine Solutions Company that is handling the pipeline surveillance security contract worth over 18. 6 million dollars annually just for OML30, which is TFP pipeline security surveillance contract alone. “Not to talk of the Trans Escravos Warri Kaduna pipeline amounting to over 20. 5 million dollars annually and that of the Bonny Nembe Creek trunk pipeline surveillance job that worth over 2.7 million dollars contract in the creek of Niger Delta. RNDA and HOSTCOM are not benefiting from these billion dollars pipeline surveillance security contract jobs in the hands of one individual from Edo state and the situation will not be accepted anymore in the creek as far as the pipeline surveillance security contract job is a concern. “Therefore, RNDA demands pipeline security surveillance job to accommodate the members of the Reformed Niger Delta Avengers group, who are over 5,000 in the creek and we will no longer allow this to happen anymore in the creek or else we will bring down all the pipelines in our creek within the stipulated time of ultimatum. “Furthermore, we demand the release of the 10 licenses for modular refineries in Niger Delta, which the federal government has not approved up till this moment, yet the Federal Executive Council is approving billions and trillions every week in the presidency through the sales of our crude oil on 1.86 million dollars to 2.2 million dollars barrels on daily basis without any tangible,” the militants said.
