Education / Re: Great Tips To Hit 5point This Semester by austeenluv(m): 9:25pm On May 05, 2016 |
Been an ATBU 500L architecture student myself I can say I agree with you especially on the photographic picture tip, I call mine "mind mapping" since reading involves the mind to be 100% present. Another helpful method I discovered and use is to re-write my note but this time taking notes of the key points. I discovered this about myself that I do hardly forget anything I wrote with my hands a week ago and so this has been my greatest style of reading. 1 Like |
Nairaland / General / The Beginning Of The Fore Told End (oil Price Decline) by austeenluv(m): 11:25am On Jan 19, 2016 |
I read news about the uneconomical state of maintaining the oil field and my face got sadder than it was before when I heard the crash down of oil price. As an architect student, I once watched a documentary about the building of the famous 7 star hotel in dubai (burj arab) and heard that the country been an oil rich country would face a run out of oil as there oil would get finished and they had no other source of generating economic income for there country, they basically had no mineral resources apart from sand, rock and water. It was predicted that there oil bum would finish in 2016 and they had no choice than to look for other means to back up there oil revenue should in case there oil runs dried. This inspired them to go into massive tourism, spending extravagantly in building hotels and recreation centres. Today, dubai is at rest and waxing strong economically despite the decline of oil price while Nigeria who would have follow same path as dubai ignorantly did not and now the pang of oil price decline is bitting heart on the nations economic. Is it that our so called leaders intentionly refuse to foresee things like this and act or there ignorance is to blame for blindly observing from other country and learn from them. |

Education / Fresh ASUU Nationwide Strike Looms In University by austeenluv(m): 10:52pm On Mar 23, 2015 |
Workers in Nigerian universities under the auspices of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities has threatened to embark on a nationwide strike over what they described an ‘obnoxious circular’ by the National Universities Commission. The union therefore gave the Federal Government till Wednesday April 28, 2015, apparently one month within which it should address the issues or face industrial action in all the federal and state universities across the country. The union said the circular was a mischief to obliterate the sanctity of its agreement with the Federal Government. The position of SSANU is contained in a communiqué dispatched to journalists on Sunday in Abuja, after its National Executive Council meeting, held at Obudu Mountain Resort in Cross River State. In the communiqué signed by its President, Samson Ugwoke, and Public Relations Officer, Mr. N.A.D. Aboribo, SSANU accused the NUC of unilaterally expunging through a circular the aspect of the agreement on university demonstration staff schools. Besides, the union regretted the failure of the government to pay the outstanding arrears of the earned allowances and most especially the political statements being made by government functionaries about the payment, which has put serious pressure on the leadership of the union at the national and branch level. SSANU also condemned the lackadaisical attitude of the Federal Government in implementing the 2009 agreement, despite its persistent call on the government and the Implementation Monitoring Committee for the full implementation and payment of the arrears of the earned allowance. The communiqué read, “SSANU called for the full implementation and renegotiation of the 2009 agreement to forestall the disruption of the present smooth academic activities in the university system. We view with very grave concern, the actions of some government agencies in collaboration with certain selfish vice-chancellors to obliterate the sanctity of the 2009 FGN/university- based unions’ agreement by unilaterally expunging through a circular from the NUC the aspect of the agreement on university demonstration staff schools. “SSANU-NEC-in-session hereby demands the immediate withdrawal of the obnoxious circular. For the avoidance of doubt, if by April 28, 2015, the circular has not been withdrawn by the NUC, the union will take labour action against the Federal Government. We frown on the overbearing attitude and unnecessary roles of the NIC in this regard.” SSANU also warned the NUC to stop its undue meddling and interference in the affairs of the universities, so as not to overheat the Nigerian university system. While demanding that the agreement should be implemented without further delay, the union criticized the continuous refusal of the Federal Government to renegotiate the said agreement “which is long overdue.” The NEC-in-session warns Federal Government on the dangers of its insensitive stand on the matter, saying it was capable of completely eroding the relative peace in our universities. “SSANU therefore urged the Federal Government to put machinery in place for the renegotiation of this agreement without any further delay.” The union also warned against the victimization of its members and officers in various universities, and especially called for the reinstatement of 19 members of the union who were sacked at the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba- Akoko. The union commended the Nigerian Armed Forces and its foreign allies for the recapture of most areas occupied by the Boko Haram terrorists in the north-eastern part of the country. SSANU called on the Federal Government to continue to adequately equip them and review Nigeria foreign policies with its neighbouring countries. Speaking on the 2015 general election, the union condemned the hate speeches and unnecessary political killings currently being experienced in the build up to the 2015 general elections. The union urged politicians to place before Nigerians issue-based campaigns play the game by the rules and avoid violence. SSANU also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to ensure that the elections were free, fair and credible. |
Celebrities / 24 Tips For Keeping Cool (without AC) During This Hot Weather Heat by austeenluv(m): 4:27pm On Mar 23, 2015 |
1. Choose cotton. Save the ooh-la-la satin, silk, or polyester sheets for cooler nights. Light-colored bed linens made of lightweight cotton ( Egyptian or otherwise) are breathable and excellent for promoting ventilation and airflow in the bedroom. 2. Feel the freezer burn. Stick sheets in the fridge or freezer for a few minutes before bed. We recommend placing them in a plastic bag first (unless eu de frozen pizza is your fave aromatherapy scent). Granted, this won’t keep you cool all night, but it will provide a brief respite from heat and humidity. 3. Get cold comfort . Here’s a four- seasons tip for keeping utilities charges down: Buy a hot water bottle. In winter, fill it with boiling water for toasty toes without cranking the thermostat. During summer, stick it in the freezer to create a bed- friendly ice pack. 4. Be creative . If you thought fans are just for blowing hot air around, think again! Point box fans out the windows so they push hot air out , and adjust ceiling fan settings so the blades run counter-clockwise, pulling hot air up and out instead of just twirling it around the room. 5. Sleep like an Egyptian. If there seem to be a lot of Egyptian references in this list, it’s because those Nile-dwellers knew how to do it right. The so-called “Egyptian method ” involves dampening a sheet or towel in cool water and using it as a blanket. We recommend laying the damp sheets on top of a dry towel to avoid soaking the mattress. 6. Get loose. Less is definitely more when it comes to summertime jammies. Pick a loose, soft cotton shirt and shorts or underwear. Going full nudie during a heat wave is (unsurprisingly) controversial. Some people believe it helps keep them cool, while others claim going au natural means sweat stays on the body instead of being wicked away by fabric. We’re going to chalk this one up to personal preference. 24 Tricks to Survive Hot Summer Nights (Without AC): Create a cross-breeze Pin it Share 7. Create a cross-breeze. In this case, hanging out in the cross-hairs is a good idea. Position a fan across from a window, so the wind from outside and the fan combine in a cooling cross-breeze . Feeling fancy? Go buck-wild and set up multiple fans throughout the room to make the airflow even more boisterous. 8. Go old-school. Remember when refrigerators were iceboxes that contained actual blocks of ice? Us neither. This stay-cool trick is straight out of the icebox era, though. Make a DIY air conditioner by positioning a shallow pan or bowl (a roasting pan works nicely) full of ice in front of a fan. The breeze will pick up cold water from the ice’s surface as it melts, creating a cooling mist. 9. Pamper your pulses. Need to cool down, stat? To chill out super-fast, apply ice packs or cold compresses to pulse points at the wrists, neck, elbows, groin, ankles, and behind the knees. 10. Get tech-y. We can’t vouch for its effectiveness, but the chillow—a high-tech pad that stays cool through water circulation—seems like a genius idea. 11. Be a lone wolf. Sorry lovebugs, but sleeping alone is way better than spooning for staying cool. Cuddling with a partner increases body heat, making the bed a sticky, sweaty pit of despair instead of a cool, calm oasis. 12. Release your inner Tarzan. Feeling ambitious (or just really, really hot)? Rig up a hammock or set up a simple cot. Both types of beds are suspended on all sides, which increases airflow. 14. Stay away from the stove. Summer is not the time to whip up a piping hot casserole or roast chicken. Instead, chow down on cool, room-temperature dishes ( salads are clutch) to avoid generating any more heat in the house. If hot food is in order, fire up the grill instead of turning on the oven. And swap big meals for smaller, lighter dinners that are easier to metabolize. The body produces more heat after you chow down on a huge steak than a platter of fruits, veggies, and legumes. 15. Fill up the tank. Get a leg up on hydration by drinking a glass of water before bed. Tossing and turning and sweating at night can result in dehydration, so get some H20 in the tank beforehand. (Pro tip: Just eight ounces will do the trick, unless you’re really into those 3am bathroom runs.) 24 Tricks to Survive Hot Summer Nights (Without AC): Cool Off Pin it Share 13. Cool off. A cold shower takes on a whole new meaning come summertime. Rinsing off under a stream of tepid H20 brings down the core body temperature and rinses off sweat (ick) so you can hit the hay feeling cool and clean. 16. Get low. Hot air rises, so set up your bed, hammock, or cot as close to the ground as possible to beat the heat. In a one-story home, that means hauling the mattress down from a sleeping loft or high bed and putting it on the floor. If you live in a multi-floor house or apartment, sleep on the ground floor or in the basement instead of an upper story. 17. Turn off the lights. This tip is pretty self-explanatory. Light bulbs (even environmentally-friendly CFLs) give off heat. Fortunately, summer means it stays light until eight or nine at night. Take advantage of natural light as much as possible, and keep rooms cool after dark by using lights minimally or not at all (romantic candle-lit dinner, anyone?). 18. Hang out. Cool down a whole room by hanging a wet sheet in front of an open window. The breeze blowing in will quickly bring down the room’s temperature. 19. Encourage cold feet. Those ten little piggies are pretty sensitive to temperature because there are lots of pulse points in the feet and ankles. Cool down the whole body by dunking (clean!) feet in cold water before hitting the hay. Better yet, keep a bucket of water near the bed and dip feet whenever you’re feeling hot throughout the night. 20. Unplug at night. As in, literally disconnect electronics. Gadgets and other small appliances give off heat, even when turned off. Reduce total heat in the house (and save energy!) by keeping plugs out of sockets when the appliances are not in use. 21. Camp at home. Got access to a safe outdoor space like a roof, courtyard, or backyard? Practice those camping skills (and stay cooler ) by pitching a tent and sleeping al fresco. 22. Hog the bed. Sleeping alone (see No. 11 above) has its perks, including plenty of space to stretch out. Snoozing in spread eagle position (i.e. with arms and legs not touching each other) is best for reducing body heat and letting air circulate around the body. Hit the hay in this sleep position to keep limbs from getting crazy sweaty. 23. Go rustic. When temperatures soar, trade in that extra-comfy mattress for a minimalist straw or bamboo mat. These all-natural sleeping surfaces are less comfortable, but they don’t retain heat like a puffy, cloth-covered mattress. 24. Get creative with grains. Rice and buckwheat aren’t just for eating! These cupboard staples can also keep you cool on hot nights. Stock up on buckwheat pillows, which don’t absorb heat like cotton and down. And for a cold compress on really hot nights, fill a sock with rice, tie it off, and stick it in the freezer for an hour or so. The compress will stay chilly for up to 30 minutes, definitely enough time to nod off. 1 Like |

Nairaland / General / Answers To Why Groom Usually Wear Black On There Wedding Day by austeenluv(m): 2:53pm On Mar 14, 2015 |
seeing people getting married has a bit of fun and also a reminder that that marriage is a road which someone would have to follow one day.I saw a marriage matrimony between two swanky and awesome young couple who seem extra super happy as if they've seen heaven. seeing the bride wearing a dazzling stainless white, and the groom wearing a dark black suit remind me of a joke which goes like this, a little girl was wondering why bride and groom do not wear the same clothes on there wedding day, decided to ask her mum and the conversation went like this. /little girl/ -- mum, why is the bride wearing all white as if she's going to heaven. /mother/ -- oh my Dear its because today is the happiest day of her life. /little girl/ -- that's interesting mum, but why is the groom wearing all black. WHAT THEN IN YOUR OWN OPINION IS THE POSSIBLE REASON WHY GROOM USUALLY WEAR BLACK ON THERE WEDDING DAY |

POP simply means plaster of paris, its a type of ceiling that originated from france.it involve the use of a white powder (calcium trioxo carbonate) for moulding the ceiling into any form or pattern.its a type of ceiling which when you look from below you would see the entire ceiling in white, with some classic designs.while suspended ceiling involves the use of synthetic material that comes in form of 300x300mm,or a long strip of plastic material that is usually cut into seize and assembled by interlocking each strip to cover a room.the type that when you look from below you would see a square pattern all through the ceiling.it is called suspended ceiling because it is attached to the roofing rafters and suspended below the roofing rafters.........the difference between both is that pop last longer and stops the spreading of fire in case of fire out break, while the suspended ceiling is cheaper and easy to instal but its highly flammable due to its plastic nature ......(arc austyn) |

Phones / Apple Seeks US To Ban Samsung Phones by austeenluv(m): 5:00pm On Dec 28, 2013 |
San Francisco - Apple has asked a federal judge to bar US sales of Samsung smartphones and tablet computers in the blockbuster patent case involving the two electronics giants. In a court filing in California, Apple said the smartphones and tablets were found to have violated patents in a jury trial held last year. Apple renewed its bid for a permanent injunction on sales of a number of Samsung products after an appeals court decision last month cleared the way for a new hearing on the matter. In the latest filing dated Thursday, Apple's attorneys wrote that the court "previously concluded that Samsung's sale of infringing products has irreparably harmed Apple." The document added that the appeals court decision "makes clear that the record evidence... collectively demonstrates a sufficient 'causal nexus' between Samsung's infringement and the irreparable harm to Apple." Apple added that "money damages are not an adequate remedy for Samsung's infringement of these patents." The US firm is seeking a ban on Samsung's smartphone models Captivate, Continuum, Droid Charge, Epic 4G, Exhibit 4G, Fascinate, Galaxy Ace, Galaxy Prevail, Galaxy S, Galaxy S 4G, Gem, Indulge, Infuse, Mesmerize, Nexus S 4G, Replenish, Vibrant,Transform and three versions of the Galaxy S II. Bans are also being sought on the Galaxy Tab and Tab 10.1 tablets. The request does not affect the newest Samsung devices, which were not at issue in the trial because of the fast product cycles in the industry. The South Korean firm, the world's biggest maker of smartphones, has been ordered to pay Apple more than $900m after a retrial on some of the issues in the case. But the case, one of several being played out in courts and administrative agencies around the world, has not dented sales of Samsung, which has vaulted ahead of Apple in many markets around the |

Education / Benefits Of A Steady Reading Lifestyle by austeenluv(m): 11:52pm On Dec 02, 2013 |
I read a Associated Press-Ipsos poll revealing that 1 in 4 adults read no books last year. Yes, that’s 25% of the adults out there are reading zero books. This is sad. I knew intuitively the number of books read each year had gone down but to zero ? Ridiculous! And what about the adults who are reading more than zero books a year. How many are they reading in all? One? Five? Actually, the same poll reveals the average adult reads only four books per year. Half of those people read less than four. If you are one of the non-book readers who feels you “ don’t need no stinking books”, here are 26 great reasons to start the habit…before you are left behind! 1. Reading is an active mental process – Unlike TV, books make you to use your brain. By reading, you think more and become smarter. 2. It is a fundamental skill builder - Every good course on the planet has a matching book to go with it. Why? Because books help clarify difficult subjects. Books provide information that goes deeper than just classroom discussion. 3. Improves your vocabulary – Remember in elementary school when you learned how to infer the meaning of one word by reading the context of the other words in the sentence? You get the same benefit from book reading. While reading books, especially challenging ones, you will find yourself exposed to many new words you wouldn’t be otherwise. 4. Gives you a glimpse into other cultures and places – What is your favorite vacation spot? I would bet you read a lot about that destination. The more information the better. Books can expand your horizons by letting you see what other cities and countries have to offer before you visit them. 5. Improves concentration and focus – Like I pointed out before, reading books takes brain power. It requires you to focus on what you are reading for long periods. Unlike magazines, Internet posts or e-Mails that might contain small chunks of information. Books tell the whole story. Since you must concentrate in order to read, like a muscle, you will get better at concentration. 6. Builds self-esteem – By reading more books, you become better informed and more of an expert on the topics you read about. This expertise translates into higher self esteem. Since you are so well read, people look to you for answers. Your feelings about yourself can only get better. 7. Improves memory – Many studies show if you don’t use your memory, you lose it. Crossword puzzles are an example of a word game that staves off Alzheimer’s. Reading, although not a game, helps you stretch your memory muscles in a similar way. Reading requires remembering details, facts and figures and in literature, plot lines, themes and characters. 8. Improves your discipline – Obviously, if 1 in 4 people don’t read one book per year, then there is a discipline issue. There may be many causes for people not reading books such as the “quips” of information you can get on the Internet. TV is also a major distracter. Making time to read is something we all know we should do, but who schedules book reading time every day? Very few… That’s why adding book reading to your daily schedule and sticking to it, improves discipline. 9. Learn anywhere – Books are portable. You can take them almost anywhere. As such, you can learn almost anywhere too. 10. Improves creativity – by reading more books and exposing yourself to new and more complete information, you will also be able to come up with more creative ideas. As a personal example, I read many, many books on IT Networking. So often, when IT Admins are stumped with a problem, I can come up with a creative (smack your head simple) solution that isn’t written anywhere. But the reason I can do that is because I have read so many books on the subject, I can combine lessons from all of them into new solutions. 11. Gives you something to talk about – Have you ever run out of stuff to talk about with your best friend, wife or husband? This can be uncomfortable. It might even make married couples wonder if their marriage is in trouble. However, if you read a lot of books, you’ll always have something to talk about. You can discuss various plots in the novels you read, you can discuss the stuff you are learning in the business books you are reading as well. The possibilities of sharing are endless. 12. Books are inexpensive entertainment – What’s the average price of a movie ticket these days? $8 – $10? You can buy a paperback for that price and be entertained for many hours more. If you have a used bookstore nearby, you can get them even cheaper. Tip: Once you make reading a habit, you’ll enjoy reading the books in your chosen career as well. 13. You can learn at your own pace – Where formal education requires time commitments, books have no late-bells or hourly commitments. So you can learn at your own pace when you read books. 14. New mental associations – I touched on this above. As you read more books the depth and breadth of your knowledge expands and your ability to form new associations increases. In reading a book to discover the solution to one problem, you find the solution to others you may not have considered. 15. Improves your reasoning skills – Books for professionals contain arguments for or against the actions within. A book on cooking argues that Chili powder goes well with beef and goes poorly with ice-cream. A book on building a business argues that testing an idea for profitability before setting up is a smart strategy and argues against just barreling forward with the idea without testing. You too will be able to reason better with the knowledge you gain. Some of the arguments will rub off on you. Others you will argue against. Regardless, you’ll be reasoning better. 16. Builds your expertise – Brian Tracy has said one way to become an expert in your chosen field is to read 100 books on the subject. He also said by continuing the same for 5 years you’ll become an international expert. With the Internet and blogs, you could hone that time down to 2-3 years if you follow through. 17. Saves money – Apart from saving money on entertainment expenses. Reading books that help you develop your skills saves money. Reading books on how someone went bankrupt will be a warning to you against repeating their mistakes. Reading a book on how to build your own backyard deck saves the expense of hiring a contractor. 18. Decreases mistakes – Although I would never suggest putting off an important goal because you fear making mistakes, it is still important to sharpen the saw (link to A.L. post) . When you gather the deep and wide wisdom that books can provide, you are less apt to make mistakes. 19. You’ll discover surprises - As you read more books as a source of information, you’ll learn stuff you weren’t looking for. I’ve read many great quotes on life and love by reading books on marketing. I’ve learned facts about biology from reading about chemistry. Heck, I’ve picked up some facts about history while reading about programming. Since so many subjects intertwine it’s almost impossible not to learn something other than the book’s subject. 20. Decreased boredom – One of the rules I have is if I am feeling bored, I will pick up a book and start reading. What I’ve found by sticking to this is that I become interested in the book’s subject and stop being bored. I mean, if you’re bored anyway, you might as well be reading a good book, right? 21. Can change your life – How many times have you heard of a book changing someone’s life? For me, it was Your Erroneous Zones (link) by Wayne Dyer – which is the first self-development book I read. It opened my eyes to a whole new way of thinking that was not depressing and dull. It was the first step in my path of choosing my own life and being free of old habitual thought patterns. There are many, many other books out there that have a reputation for changing lives including Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity , Handbook to Higher Consciousness, Atlas Shrugged , A Tree Grows in Brooklyn , Lord of the Rings and Black Boy to name a few. But you can start in your chosen field and work your way outward. 22. Can help break a slump – Being in a slump is uncomfortable. If you are a writer, you call it writer’s block. If you are a salesperson, it’s called – not making a sale in 23 days. But a slump can be a crossroads. It might be you are wavering on your commitment to a particular project or (with marriage) person. Or a slump can be simply a lack of new ideas. Books are a great source of ideas, big and small. So if you find yourself in a slump, pick a book on the portion of your life you are slump- ing and get to reading! 23. Reduces stress - Many avid readers (including me) unwind by reading. Compared with the person who gets home from work and immediately turns on the TV news, you are going from work stress to crime stress. But it’s not just news. TV as a source of relaxation is too full of loud commercials and fast moving (often violent) images. If relaxation is something you want, turn off the TV or computer and pick up a book. 24. Gets you away from digital distractions – If you, like many others, feel overwhelmed with the flashing lights, beeps, boops and ring-a-dings that burn up our computing lives, then give books a chance. When you find some good books, you’ll find yourself drawn into the subject matter. You’ll want to spend more time reading. By spending more time reading books, you’ll have less time for the plethora of the digital gadgets begging for our attention. 25. You’ll make more money - If you make a serious effort to read in your chosen career, your expertise in that specialty will increase. As you become more specialized and learned, you join a smaller group of more qualified people. By being part of the small few with the highest level knowledge your pay will increase. It’s simple supply and demand. 26. The book is always better than the movie – except for perhaps No Country for Old Men . What are some of the most important books you have read? What is the title that changed your life? If you’ve found a book that made a major change in how you work, live or love, please tell us about it 2 Likes |
