“RIP Mary” was the heading written in dark bold italic lettering with a picture of a girl who had a smile on her face. There was something about that picture that makes it look as though she was staring back at you. She had this beautiful smile, a dimple, thick black eye lashes that highlighted her almond- shaped eyes. The picture was perfect; a face with no blemish whatsoever, a white dentition glowed beneath her little mouth, a pointed nose and a protruding jaw. Everything was perfect about the picture except that the girl in it was dead. I only knew her as colleague in school, she was a quiet one, always shying away from the rest of the class, she hardly said hello first but would reply with a beautiful smile whenever you greeted her and disappears before you could say another word. I never knew her name until now that she “ended it all” by taking her own life and the suicide note she left behind read “no one cares…” many said she was the nicest girl they had ever met, a lot more said she could never hurt a fly and there I was staring at her picture and wondering why I was a classmate with someone for 3 years and we were never friends, I never knew her name until now. I wish I was her friend, I wish I had spoken with her more often, I wish I had walked with her the last time I saw her walking to the park alone… if only wishes were horses. I’m not the only one guilty of this, we all are. We are all too busy with ourselves we forget other people exist too. We see the world as a race and each one of us has to out-run the other man, we fail to realize we all have different finish lines and no one gets to your finish line except you. We have a thousand friends on social media whom we give our likes but not our love, chatting with people miles away but wouldn’t say hello to the person sitting next to us on a bus. We`ve created a world where people call you a freak for trying to start a conversation with a random person on the street. We have accounts on all social media but a zero social life. Spoken word artist Gary Turk said “Be there for your friends and they`ll be there for you too but no one will be If a group message will do”. It`s now too late for me to be friends with Mary but it isn’t too late to ask my next door neighbor how his day was or start a meaningful conversation with the next person I share a cab with, it`s not too late to share my mind with Joseph my classmate perhaps his advice could save me from making a huge mistake, it`s not too late to tell someone about what I admire in them maybe that’s all they need to hear to brighten their day, it`s not too late to ask someone what’s bothering them because I don’t want to be staring at their picture and wishing I had known them better nor do I want a bunch of strangers at my funeral who know nothing about me, strange but true. Tell someone you love how you feel about them, call someone else and ask how they are doing, start a conversation with someone, because life is too short and everyone knows no one likes to be alone. Stop the music, pull out the earpiece and join the conversation, laugh with cliques, play outdoor games and stop living life like robot around other people. It`s never too late to give someone your love because we all have a finite number of days to live. It`s never too late to make someone feel better because the best social media isn’t internet connected it is holding hands, laughing together and making eye contacts. Make someone feel better today because it`s never too late yet. |
