Travel / Tanzania Is Set To Test-Run Its High-speed Electric Trains. See How Much It Cost by AUTOJOSH1: 10:47am On Jun 19, 2019
Tanzania is set to do a test run of its first high-speed electric trains this month.

The trains would be one of Africa’s high-speed trains with projected speeds of up to 160 mph.

The train will run on a Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) tracks.

The first trials for the train will be conducted later this month; this is according to the Minister for Works, Transport and Communications, Eng. Isack Kamwele.

The first phase of the Standard Guage Railway track covers a distance of 300km. It runs from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro with 6 stations in between. While the test-run will commence in July, full operations will start in December this year, Kamwele reportedly said.

There will be three passenger trains in phase one at the starting point that will be taking daily round trips between the two cities. Each passenger train is capable of making 9 to 12 trips a day or even more.

Ghana Vs. Nigeria Railway Line Construction: The Costs Will Shock You!

The train will use concrete sleepers which improve durability and give the railway network capacity to carry up to 35 tonnes per axle loads. The rails can survive up to 40 years before any major repairs while the train bridge can survive up to 100 years.

So far, over 26,000 employment opportunities have been created by the project. More job opportunities will be created in the second phase and subsequent ones and once the stations become fully operational.

The rails can survive up to 40 years before any major repairs while the train bridge can survive up to 100 years.

The 300-km electric train railway project cost the Tanzanian Government US $1.9bn (Tshs.4.3 trillion).

Toyota Motor Corporation is among the leading car brands in the world today. As of June 2019, Toyota Motor Corporation is the richest automobile company in the world with a market capitalization of $199 Billion.

In Nigeria, Toyota is one of the most preferred brands due to some certain factors such as durability, availability of spare parts and good resale value. You can read our detailed post on the “8 Reasons Why Toyota is Nigeria’s No.1 Car Brand“.

The Toyota brand uses various trim levels to offer their car buyers variety of options to choose from each model. Each trim level has an acronym that indicates its standing in the lineup.

In case you’ve been wondering the meaning of CE, LE, SE, XLE, you see written on Toyota cars, then you’re in the right place. Autojosh have your back. In a short while, you’ll find out their meaning as well as which trim levels are available for each model.

Below are the various Toyota trim level acronyms and their meaning:

Travel / Detailed Explanation Of ‘passenger Manifest’ & Its Importance by AUTOJOSH1: 10:12pm On Jun 10, 2019

In one way or the other, you must have come across a manifest used for the various modes of transportation. Every passenger is expected to provide some basic information for proper documentation using the manifest.

A passenger manifest is a document listing passengers and crew of a ship, aircraft, or vehicle. It contains some basic information about the passengers.

Putting down the details of passengers on a manifest is an acceptable practice all over the world. When crashes occur, victims are easily identified. It also makes sorting easy for the issue of compensation arises.

As we all know, it is a common practice for some passengers not to put down their real names and other required information. Perhaps they are not comfortable doing that.

There is a possibility that many of the people already declared missing are lying unconscious in some hospitals or the bodies are frozen in some hospital morgue or buried in mass graves as unidentified victims of road traffic crashes. This might be the outcome when passengers don’t provide useful information in the manifest.

When accidents occur, owners of transport, in conjunction with the government agencies, are able to contact the relations of victims, for them to know the victims whereabouts and render the necessary help or take on certain responsibilities. This is possible with the aid of a manifest.

Inaccurate or no passenger data on the manifest may result to the following:

Difficulty of identification of accident victims
Congestion of hospitals and mortuaries by unidentified victims, at great expenses to the governments at all levels.
Lack of proper medical attention for accident victims.
Security problems of sorting out issues of missing persons.
Pains and agonies of families of missing persons.

In a bid to avoid or minimize the above problems, he Federal Road Safety Commission working with other Stakeholders in the transport industry introduced the PASSENGER MANIFEST into the road transport system. The National Road Traffic Regulations, 2004 mandates commercial vehicle operators on inter-city or town movements to operate Passengers manifest.

Below is the usefulness of an accurate passenger manifest:

Early /Easy identification of accident victims and quick contact with their next of kin to ensure adequate medical care and treatment.
Improves general road traffic crash data, which is capable of determining new measures to sanitize the sector by the FRSC.
Monitoring of vehicle owners for quick clearance and contact in times of accidents.
Enhances quick clearance/ recovery of dead victims by their relatives.

Passengers are advised to desist from providing fictitious names. Correct information on the passenger manifest is for the benefits of all, especially the passengers. Here is an example. In a situation when a passenger is unconscious after involvement in crash. He won’t be able to disclose his names or the contact persons.

Please, the next time you would be traveling with a public transport, ensure you correctly put down your full names, contact addresses, telephone numbers and next of Kin or persons to be contacted in case of an accident. Doing this does not mean you’re inviting crashes or disaster.

Travel / Hadiza Bala Usman Of NPA Speaks On Why Apapa Gridlock Will Persist by AUTOJOSH1: 1:05pm On Jun 10, 2019

Hadiza Bala Usman is the Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and she spoke about the Apapa gridlock. She said that truck queue and traffic congestion in Apapa will not reduce unless there is a concerted effort by concerned authorities to provide trailer parks.

She said this on a radio programme in Lagos. The Managing Director expressed displeasure over the delay in the commissioning of the Tin Can Island trailer park ten years after the Federal Ministry of Works, Power and Housing took over the project.

She said, “I want to use this opportunity to call on the Federal Ministry of Works, Power and Housing to conclude the trailer park inside Tin Can Island. There is a trailer park there that the Ministry of Works has been constructing for the past ten years.

“I have held discussions with the Ministry since I assumed office two and half years ago and made a request that they should hand over that trailer park to the Nigerian Ports Authority so that we can conclude the shore protection and have it ready since December 2017 yet we are still here, it has not been finished, it has not been handed over. The traffic situation in Apapa will not reduce unless there is a concerted effort in providing trailer parks.”

Usman said the construction of more truck parks outside the port environment will go a long way in decongesting the Lagos ports access roads.

“The gridlock in Apapa has been lingering for too long. The Nigerian port in the last three weeks withdrew the lease for Lilypond as a terminal and converted it into a trailer park. I would also call on the Lagos and Ogun State governments to look at land allocations and cancel them for overriding public interest and make them trailer parks outside of the port environment where those trailers can sit.

“We must have trailer parks and holding bays for trucks to enable us manage the traffic. We can’t have a situation where all trailers do not have designated parks.

“You must have as a state and local government, designated locations for trailers to park. NPA intends to now have call-up systems that will be deployed in these trailer parks.

“Lilypond is a transit park into the port but we need to have a large size trailer park that will house the trailers on the roads. It is a big challenge that we have and we will continue to see what we can do to decongest the bridges to ensure seamless inflow and outflow,” she stated.

She also lamented the absence of functional scanners and single window platform in cargo clearance at the port, saying that physical examination of cargo at the port hampers efficient cargo delivery.

“One of the concerns we have is that when cargo comes into the port, we do physical examination. There is absence of scanners at the port and the Customs have not deployed the scanners that are required.

“An additional tool we need to deploy for trade facilitation is the single window. That is also another issue that ports in neighbouring countries have, so cargo clearance is fast and seamless. If you deploy single window, every agency will now key in there.

“No agency is supposed to stop any cargo once they have done examination inside the port but we have seen where Customs insist on having another examination outside the port. These are some of the challenges we are facing on the ease of doing business,” she added.

What are the things you suggest to be done to help decongest the Apapa gridlock?

Travel / Toyota Corolla Driver Hits By-standers While Trying To Drift (graphic Video) by AUTOJOSH1: 2:56pm On Jun 09, 2019

Drifting is a driving technique where the driver intentionally oversteers, with loss of traction in the rear wheels or all tires, while maintaining control and driving the car through the entirety of a corner.

Controlling a car that is drifting isn’t a child’s play because the car is being driven beyond the limit of adhesion.

Drifting is not a stunt anybody can wake up and just do; it requires you master the art. To successfully drift a car, you must have the basic skills of drifting and should have practiced for some times.

One of the worst places to drift is in a public or populated area. Drifting in such area will end up putting the lives of some people in danger and could possibly result in death. A perfect example is what you saw in the video attached to this post. The Toyota Corolla driver lost control of the car and hit some by-standers. Some got lucky whereas some did not.

It is a traffic crime to drift in some parts of the world except it’s in a controlled setting such as a track where there are emergency crews on standby in case of a mishap. In such settings too, there are barriers protecting spectators. Unfortunately, there are none in this video.

Don’t be tempted to pull such stunts when it is not in a safe area because accident is bound to happen especially when the car goes out of control.

Please, as a spectator, ensure you always keep a safe distance when such stunt is being pulled. Don’t be part of statistics.

Defensive driving is a style of driving in which the driver makes conscious effort to save lives, money and time in spite of the conditions around him and the provocative actions of other drivers.

Defensive driving is regarded to be a skill that allows you defend yourself against accidents caused by bad drivers, drunk drivers and even poor weather conditions.

A defensive driver recognizes hazards, understands the defence, and acts correctly and in time. Most road traffic crashes are caused by the faulty decisions or actions of drivers and other road users.

Some of these faulty decisions are due to ignorance of traffic rules and regulations.

A defensive driver must be conscious of this, and should know that it takes two to tango. His defensive action could prevent a crash and save the other road user as well.

8 things one must do as a defensive driver include the following:

3.Always give correct, prompt, adequate and clear signals.

4.Be considerate and share the road with others.

5.Always drive at your comfortable speed.

6.Avoid over-speeding, over-loading, wrongful and dangerous over-taking.

7. Be conscious of your area of safety.

Travel / Pilot Flying With Expired Medical Certificate Loses Licence In Nigeria by AUTOJOSH1: 7:06pm On Jun 05, 2019

A pilot who flew for six consecutive months with an expired medical certificate got his Airline Transport Pilot’s Licence (ATPL) revoked by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

The identity of the pilot and the airline he flew for was not disclosed by NCAA. The pilot flew between November 2018 to May 2019 without a valid medical certificate.

A statement by the General Manager, Public Affairs, NCAA said: “Specifically, the pilot’s medical certificate commenced validity from 17th July, 2017 and expired on the 16th January, 2018. Another one was processed on 11th May 2018 which expired on the 10th November, 2018.

“However, investigation has revealed that instead of the pilot revalidating his medical certificate he conducted flight operations as the pilot-in-command (PIC) in flagrant disregard of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations (Nig.CARs).
“According to Part 2.11.1.2-(b) A flight crew member or air traffic controller shall not exercise the privileges of his/her licence unless he/she holds a current medical certificate appropriate to the licence.”

The Manager added that the agency had determined that pursuant to Part 2.11.1.2(b) of the Nig.CARs, the pilot had lost the privileges of his licence, stressing that he didn’t hold a current medical certificate appropriate to the licence.

The NCAA added that in Part 2.2.9.3 (a) A licence, rating, authorisation or certificate “shall be revoked if the holder has lost the skills for exercising the privileges mentioned in the document or fails to meet appropriate medical standards as shown by the result of a medical examination or a test.

“Therefore, in line with Part 1.3.3.3(a)(1) of the Nig.CARs, the Pilot’s Licence ATPL (A] [ A- Aircraft] is hereby revoked with immediate effect, and it ceases to be effective,” it added.

The statement hinted that the pilot had been directed to return the invalidated licence to the authority’s director of licensing (DOL) within seven days of receipt of the letter of sanction, stressing that the letter has since been dispatched accordingly.

Travel / The 3 Categories Of Road Signs You Need To Know by AUTOJOSH1: 6:39pm On Jun 04, 2019

As we all know, driving in Nigeria is a very serious business and utmost care and attention is required. Being a good driver is not all about moving the car; total concentration and obedience to the laid down traffic rules also matters.

From the beginning to the end of the journey, every driver is expected to be alert and safety conscious at all times. The driver should always watch out for road signs, signals and markings which provide useful information.

Every driver is expected to have a thorough knowledge of traffic signs, signals and road markings. Traffic signs are made of various shapes and colours to direct, warn or inform drivers about traffic regulations, special hazards and other road conditions, construction areas, speed limits and so on.

The road signs are categorized into three, namely, regulatory, warning and informative signs.

1. Regulatory Signs:

They are mostly circular in shape. The ones with background and red or yellow circles are prohibitive signs, while mandatory signs are those with blue circles but without red borders. They give positive instructions to drivers, examples. ‘Diversion’, ‘One Way’, ‘Round-About’, ‘Pedestrian Track’, etc.

2. Warning Signs:

These are usually triangular in shape with red borders. They warn drivers of hazards ahead. Examples are, ‘Stop’, ‘No U-Turn’, ‘No Horn’, ‘No Overtaking’, and ‘No Parking’, etc.

3. Informative Signs:

Informative signs are usually rectangular in shape and provide guidance, information to drivers. They include Parking, Hospital, Telephone, Town, Airport, and Construction Zone signs.

There are many road signs most Nigerian motorists don’t know their meaning. Here are the 18 Common Road Signs That Most Motorists In Nigeria Don’t Know Their Meanings.

Don’t forget to rate and share this post with your family, friends and even enemies, so they can learn too.

Politics / CCTVs At Junctions Can Make Extra N200billion To Develop Lagos -comedian Alibaba by AUTOJOSH1: 12:19pm On Jun 04, 2019

Comedian Alibaba Suggests How Sanwo-Olu Can Use CCTVs At Major & Busy Junctions To Make Extra N200Billion To Develop Lagos.

Comedian Alibaba, yesterday, was trapped in traffic for almost about 35 minutes. When he noticed that the situation wasn’t getting any better, he stepped down from his car, put on his FRSC special marshal regalia and began helping out to de-congest the traffic.

In case you want to be an FRSC Special Marshal, you can read our post on “How To Be An FRSC Special Marshal“ to know all it takes.

After three hours of serving as traffic warden, the ace comedian took to Instagram to explain how we are the cause of our problems.

He explained what caused the traffic jam and what he did to remedy the situation. He went further with a suggestion to the governor-elect of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu. He talked about how the governor should just invest in CCTVs at major and busy junctions to make extra N200billion to develop Lagos.

He talked about how every car should have a registration number linked to the BVN number of the owner and how traffic fines should be directly deducted from offenders’ accounts.

We were able to get all he wrote from his verified Instagram account. Take your time to read and understand.

He Wrote;

Spent 3 hours today… and came to the conclusion again, that we are the cause of our problems.
After the #tdwcafrica2019 at Landmark, I was on the road linking Ligali, going back to my office and noticed there was a gridlock.

My driver said it will soon clear. When soon turned to 35 minutes, I came down and walked through the vehicles to see the cause of the HOLD UP was.

4 lanes coming from Ligali towards Landmark and 5 lanes filtering onto the end of Ligali. Plus traffic from 3 streets pouring into the same road. The little spaces inbetween cars were all taken over by okada riders. While the spaces wider than those okadas could squeeze through had been pegged close by keke Napep.
Managed to merge 4 lanes to 2 and 3 lanes in the opposite direction, to form 1 lane, just to decongest the gridlock. Worked. And after 2 hours, decorum had resumed.
Hmmm.

A thought hit me. If @jidesanwoolu wants to make extra N200b to develop Lagos, he should just invest in CCTVs at major and busy junctions. With STOP signs to boot. Borrow money fix the roads and drainages. Then set up a system that will get drivers and vehicles to be linked together. When you are caught on tape, beating the traffic lights or breaking traffic laws, you will just get the alert that the payment has been deducted from your account.

To make this work, each car will have its registration number linked to the BVN of the owner. No need to set up any other means of collecting the money. And if you sell the car, you must go to the licensing office to change the BVN. Failure to do that means whoever drives the car and commits an offence, will not be debited. The original owner pays.
If it’s a military vehicle, the debit comes from the military account. Same with corporate bodies.

Individuals too. You can imagine Oga is sitting at home, in Ikoyi, and he gets a debit alert for traffic infractions in Lekki PHASE 1, N45,000. How? He will call the driver or whoever is with the car. Kilode? “I beat red lights sir”. Just sack yourself.
And it doesn’t matter whether you have money in the account. The account will be on debit. Any day money comes in it will be deducted with interest.
No traffic

Do you think adopting these methods will go a long way in curbing the traffic insanity in Lagos state? Again, is that amount he stated feasible?

Travel / Peace Mass Transit Guide On Seat Numbering And Sitting In Their Buses by AUTOJOSH1: 9:18am On Jun 04, 2019

Peace Mass Transit has addressed the seat numbering and sitting issue in PMT buses following some complaints raised some weeks ago about their transit.

The management of Peace Mass Transit issued out a statement as regards to the sitting arrangements in their buses.

Below is the statement;

It has become necessary, owing to a recent event, to clarify matters with regards to sitting arrangements in Peace Mass Transit (PMT) buses. Our passengers/customers should please note the following:

1. In buses within local routes (short distance journeys that terminate in an hour or thereabout) there is no strict adherence to any sitting arrangement. That means a passenger can sit anywhere he or she likes, or finds a seat available, irrespective of what is written on the ticket obtained at the point of payment.

2. On the highway routes (long distance trips) passengers sit strictly according to the number on their tickets. If a passenger has a ticket for the number 2 seat, for instance, he or she would be automatically entitled to sit on seat No 2!

3. Passengers can agree to swap seats; that would be strictly their decision. PMT does not get involved in such transactions.

4. All passengers are treated equally as valued customers, irrespective of gender, creed or tribe.

5. Passengers are also encouraged to use the Customer Service lines on their tickets, to report perceived/ alleged cases of mistreatment by depot staff: at the point of boarding; in the course of the journey, or at the destination terminal.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has fulfilled his electoral promise to the state workforce by delivering 35 brand new buses for their movements.

The Governor was represented by the Head of Service, Mr. Hakeem Muri-Okunola, during the presentation of the buses.

The brand new staff buses promised to the civil servants by Governor Sanwo-olu, arrived Alausa on Sunday.

The new buses are part of the 820 buses procured by the previous administration under the Bus Reform Initiative.

It indeed will be a happy moment for civil servants at the Lagos state secretariat.

We hope the governor-elect keeps to all he promised the mass during his campaign.

What is the next project you would love the new governor execute as soon as possible?

Travel / 70,000 Unclaimed Driver’s Licences In Lagos - FRSC by AUTOJOSH1: 7:15pm On May 31, 2019
There are no fewer than 70, 000 unclaimed driver’s licenses in Lagos state.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Zone 2 Command, comprising of Lagos and Ogun, revealed this much.

The head of the command, Samuel Obayemi, Assistant Corp Marshall, disclosed this during a visit to the palace of Akran of Badagry, Aholu Menu Toyi 1, in Lagos. He expressed concern that Lagosians who had gone to check their driver’s licenses and discovered that they were not ready often refuse to go back for rechecking.

“The truth of the matter is that FRSC is in charge of driver’s licenses but different license offices do the distribution.“Since people are not forthcoming, we are now working with various boards of internal revenue to see that these unclaimed licences are collected.

“As at today, we have about 70,000 yet to be collected driver’s licences in Lagos State alone. That is why we started “Operation Show Your Licence.

”Click Here to Find Out If Your Driver's License Is On The List Of Uncollected Licenses“

The idea behind this is that when we stop them and find out that some don’t have licenses, we encourage them to go to various licence offices to collect their driver’s licences.

“As I speak to you, some of these licences have expired because they did not collect them after three years.

“Some people would have died while some would have relocated to other states, but there are still some who are around who are yet to collect it.

“It is our hope that at the end of the exercise, there will be a drastic reduction in the unclaimed licences,” he said.Mr Obayemi urged people who are yet to collect their licences to go to different licence offices in Lagos for collection.

Travel / Driver Of Toyota Camry Dribbles A Police Car (video) by AUTOJOSH1: 7:47am On May 30, 2019

A Toyota Camry driver was caught on camera dribbling police with his car.

We can’t say if the driver of the Toyota Camry got lucky or that he so much knows how to dribble people with cars.

In the video, the Toyota Camry was being chased by the police just as it is in Grand Theft Auto, but the Camry driver succeeded in confusing the policemen coming after him.

Politics / President Buhari Marks Inauguration With 2019 Mercedes Benz S560 (photos) by AUTOJOSH1: 7:13am On May 30, 2019

President Buhari has added a 2019 Mercedes Benz S560 to his fleet of cars.

Yesterday was the swearing-in ceremony of the President, and we at Autojosh took notice of the new presidential whip which was unveiled yesterday.

The 2019 Mercedes Benz S-Class S560 was part of the fleet of cars that brought the President to the Eagles Square for the swearing-in ceremony. President Buhari and his wife, Aisha Buhari, were both conveyed in the luxury Mercedes Benz.

The car conveying the first man in the country should be sophisticated as much as possible. Undoubtedly, the car is reinforced to ensure nothing happens to our president from the outside while he’s on transit. Anyone attempting to shoot at the president from outside the Benz is wasting time; it can’t penetrate.

The unveiling of this Benz acquired by President Buhari came less than 24 hours after he submitted his asset declaration form at the Code of Conduct Bureau.

Travel / Volvo 240DL Limousine Spotted In Lagos. What Do You Think? (photo) by AUTOJOSH1: 5:42am On May 24, 2019

A vehicle locally reconstructed for cross-border smuggling along Lagos-Badagry Expressway, Ojo, Lagos on Wednesday.

If you stay in the Mainland part of Lagos, you may be able to see this kind of vehicles.

After they load the vehicle with the products they want to smuggle in, the car will so come down and assume its normal or near-normal ground clearance. This will make it look like it wasn’t even reconstructed.

Some other cars you’ll see that have been locally reconstructed like this Volvo 240DL is Volkswagen Passat, Mazda Wagons and even Toyota Camry aka big daddy. Which other cars have you seen that were locally reconstructed like this ?

Autos / 5 Important Things You Must Know Before You Park Your Car by AUTOJOSH1: 5:28am On May 24, 2019

Parking is the act of stopping and disengaging a vehicle and leaving it unoccupied.

Every driver of a motor vehicle should park in such a way that it does not cause danger, obstruction, or undue inconvenience to other road users.

You’re only permitted to park the way you want inside your compound where you stay alone.

1. How to park

Before parking, check your mirror and look out for other road users. Signal to show your intention to stop.
Remember the Look-Signal-Move routine which means: Look around and check your mirrors to assess the speed and position of traffic behind you – Signal to warn other road users what you intend doing – Move or Manoeuvre represents any change in speed or direction.
Before leaving your vehicle, switch off the engine and make sure your parking brake is on. Do not expose valuables in your vehicles. Where safety or anti-theft devices are installed, use them.
Remember to switch off your headlamps at night so your battery does not run down.
Use parking light when necessary.

2. Where not to park

You must not park wherever you see NO PARKING sign. You must not park wherever your vehicle will obstruct the views of other road users or constitute danger to them. For instance, don’t park at or near:

Road junction
Bends or corners
Brow or crest of a hill
Narrow bridge
Level crossing
Bus stop
Pedestrians crossing, or on either side of a crossing
School entrance or other entrances
Footpath, pavement or cycle path
The left hand side of the road (except in a oneway street).
On a narrow road
On flyovers, in tunnels or in underpasses (unless there are signs to say you may park there)
On expressways (except on the hard shoulder in an emergency)
On a single track road.
Outside a private entrance for vehicles

3. Do not block the view of traffic signs

You should not park your vehicle in such a manner that block road traffic signs. When you block these road traffic signs, you deny other motorists the chances of knowing what lies ahead of them. An example is blocking the ‘bending ahead’ road traffic sign.

4. Stay away from emergency entrances/exits

Do not park your vehicle to block or within 15 meters of entrances through which emergency vehicles go in and out, that is, near the entrance of:

Hospitals
Roadside clinics
Road Safety Stations
Fire Stations
Fire hydrants
Police stations

5. Do not obstruct the flow of traffic

Do not park where you would make the road narrow:

Alongside another parked vehicle
Opposite another vehicle if this would narrow the road to less than the width of two vehicles (double parking)
Near road works

The way and place you park really matters because wrong parking can hinder the movement of others especially during emergencies.

Kindly share with us the worst parking experience you’ve had using the comment section.

Travel / The Responsibilities Of Drivers, occupants & Volunteers When There Is An Accident by AUTOJOSH1: 10:24am On May 23, 2019

The occurrence of road accidents is inevitable. But the good thing is that accidents can be reduced to the barest minimum when we do the needful. If the laid down traffic rules are adhered to, the number of accidents that happen on daily basis would certainly reduce.

One terrible thing about auto crash is that a very little mistake can result in fatality. Something that appears simple like not putting on your turn signal as at when due can end up catastrophic. So, every decision you make when driving counts.

In case there is an accident, there are various things that could be done by vehicle drivers, occupants and even volunteers to salvage the situation.

Below are the responsibilities of drivers, occupants and volunteers in the event of a road crash according to the Nigeria Highway Code

DRIVERS OF VEHICLES

Stop at the scene of the crash
Check if you are hurt
Check if anybody is hurt
If not hurt, leave the epicenter of the crash to a safe location, summon courage and assist others
State the fact of the case if asked by law enforcement agents
Get skid marks, other identification and photographs
Contact your insurer and lawyer
Report the crash to the nearest FRSC Office or call 0700-2255-3772 (FRSC)

VEHICLE OCCUPANTS

If not hurt, vacate the hazardous location on the highway
Give all necessary information
If hurt but can talk, explain where it hurts to the first Aider
Cooperate with first Aider

VOLUNTEERS

Stop to help at every traffic crash scene
By-standers are to cooperate with first Aider
Do not compound the pain of the victim with your expressed emotion
Help to clear obstructions
Do not constitute obstructions

Note: The life you help save today may save yours tomorrow.

Which other responsibilities do you think were missed? Help state them using the comment section.

Crime / 3 Friends Arrested For Stealing 26 Rental Cars In Arizona by AUTOJOSH1: 9:25am On May 23, 2019

Three friends who work for rental companies were apprehended for stealing as many as 26 vehicles in their places of work.

Rick White, 23, Tyshawnee Collins, 20 and Dwayne Cantley, 45, were all arrested and would be facing the law for the crimes they committed. Police say the three are all friends who work at rental car businesses at the airport.

The three friends allegedly worked together to let cars pass through their gates without scanning them, allowing the others to drive the cars out of the lot without being detected.

Police say surveillance video shows each of the three at their gates pretending to scan the vehicles.

Investigators believe the White, Collins and Cantley are responsible for taking as many as 26 late model cars and trucks.

According to police investigation, 21 of the vehicles entered Mexico within days after they were stolen.

All three have been charged with vehicle theft.

It’s time Nigeria as a country starts installing surveillance cameras; it will help in curbing crimes like car theft. It will as well speed up investigations.

Travel / The Rules Of Driving On An Expressway by AUTOJOSH1: 7:35am On May 23, 2019

An expressway is a high-speed road specially designed for traffic movement with minimum interruption. It is also necessary we remind you an expressway is certainly not a speed track.

There are several stern restrictions on an expressway. Those restrictions are given below;

No animals
No pedestrians or hawkers
No pedal cycles
No learner drivers
No stopping
No loading or unloading

While driving on the expressway

1. Concentrate:

Traffic travels faster on expressways than on ordinary roads, and you will need to fathom up traffic situations quickly. Use your mirrors, and concentrate always. Watch out for vehicles entering the expressway.

2. Keep your distance:

Do not get too close to the vehicle in front. Give the car(s) ahead of you a reasonable gap.

3. Maintain a Steady Speed:

Do not move in jerks. There are both minimum and maximum speed limits on the expressway. Apply the common sense speed limits and and don’t speed more than required.

4. Avoid Lane Hopping:

Stay in one lane unless when overtaking. If you have to overtake, do so smoothly and do not hop. Overtake only from the left. Remember the LOOK-SIGNAL-MOVE routine. Be sure to check blind spots.
5. Never Reverse on the Expressway:

Under no circumstance should you reverse on the expressway. If you miss your exit, go to the next one.

6. No Stopping:

Do not wait or stop on the expressway. If you have to stop, pull out to the hard shoulder and post a suitable and safe signal. You may put on your HAZARD LIGHTS.

7. Stop! If Sleepy:

Driving for long distances may make you feel sleepy. To help prevent this, make sure there is plenty of fresh air in your vehicle. Stop at a service area and walk around for a while. Get off the highway. Take a nap if necessary. Avoid the monotony of the expressway which may hypnotise you into a fatal error. Avoid fatigue or the effect of drugs. If you are in any doubt or feel unfit, STOP driving immediately.

8. Leaving the Expressway:

If you are not going to leave at the end of the expressway, you will leave by a slip road on your right. Watch for signs letting you know you are getting near your turnoff point, give a right turn signal, get into the extra lane (the deceleration lane) in order to slow down before you join the slip road.

If you miss your exit point, YOU MUST CARRY ON UNTIL YOU REACH THE NEXT ONE, do not reverse or turn back.

9. Remember to alter your driving to suit the different conditions on the other roads after you leave the expressway.

An expressway is where you can’t afford to make careless mistakes for the sake of your safety and of other road users.

What are your experiences the first time you drove on an expressway? You can share with us using the comment section.

Don’t forget to like, rate and share.

Travel / China Held A Car Race Competition For Driverless Cars by AUTOJOSH1: 5:47am On May 22, 2019

China held a driverless car race competition in the city of Tianjin, during their Third World Intelligent Driving Challenge.

China is a country where technology and innovation is a commonplace. We should not just be surprised whenever they try out unusual things like this. It is good you know the Chinese are putting in much effort as the global race to gain the lead in technology heats up.
They got bored of the conventional car race we all know and went for something different.

They got bored of the conventional car race we all know and went for something different. They decided to race driverless cars; everything a driver could possibly do while racing were left to the mercy of a computer with its numerous sensors.

Several self-driving cars contested and it was all fun watching them race for glory. On a circuit covering an area of 10 soccer fields, they navigated through bumps, sudden turns and artificial fog. Even fake cows and sheep suddenly crossed their paths for good measure. Some teams wreaked less havoc than others.

Chinese carmakers like Beijing Electric Vehicle Co. and China FAW Group Co. were in attendance. Universities as well as research entities graced the event.

The competition was organized in a bid to spur China’s autonomous-car efforts, and also highlights how nascent the technology is.

“The invention of automobile changed people’s perception of time and space,” Li Deyi, chairman of the Chinese Association of Artificial Intelligence, said at the event’s opening ceremony on Wednesday. “The current revolution will change the nature of cars and make it more than just a transport tool for human beings.”

The team from Tsingshua University won the contest and Beijing Electric came second.

Travel / 9 Things To Bear In Mind When Reversing Your Car by AUTOJOSH1: 10:09pm On May 21, 2019

Reversing your car is one thing you cannot avoid while driving. You won’t move in forward direction forever while driving; you have to reverse at some point.

The way you reverse your car has a crucial role to play in your safety and the safety of other road users. When you take the wrong approach to reverse your car, you may end up putting your life and the life of other road users in danger.

Below are what you need to bear in mind before or when you reverse

1. Make sure that there are no pedestrians particularly children or physically challenged persons or physical obstructions on the road behind you. Do your 360 Degree Check; check your entire surroundings. Don’t forget to look behind and under your car before getting inside it if you’ll be driving in reverse.

2. Be especially careful about the ‘blind area” behind you, that is, that part of the road you cannot see from the driving seat either through the mirror or by looking backwards.

3. Do not fail to adjust your side mirror when necessary, especially to see the ground. Some cars are programmed to automatically adjust the mirrors once the reverse gear is engaged.

4. Do not reverse if you cannot see clearly behind. Get someone to guide you when you reverse. Otherwise don’t so you don’t have to stop only after you’ve heard ‘gbosaaa!!!‘.

5. Never reverse from a side road into a major road. A good example is reversing from a road in a street into a major road. You may not be lucky enough to avoid being hit by an incoming car.

6. According to Nigeria Highway Code, while reversing at night, always put your headlight off and ensure your reverse light is working. You may switch on your HAZARD lights.

7. It is advised you reverse as slowly as necessary while using your mirrors, rear view camera as well as checking all around you (Unless you’re running from danger, do not move too fast like you want to do Formula 1 race using reverse).

8. Do not reverse your vehicle further than necessary so you won’t be like some people that won’t stop reversing until they hit the curb or enter the gutter.

9. Do not rely solely on the reverse camera of your car.

Are you among those that usually find it difficult to reverse a car? Tell us in the comment section below if reversing a car is always difficult or easy for you.

Car Talk / 2019 Toyota Hiace Bus Unveiled (photos) by AUTOJOSH1: 3:38pm On May 21, 2019

The Toyota Hiace bus was originally introduced in the year 1967. It is one of the buses mostly used in Nigeria for various purposes. They are mostly used by transport companies, corporate firms, schools, hospitals etc.

According to Toyota, the 2019 Toyota Hiace bus which falls under the sixth generation offers lower noise and vibration with a significant increase in size for both the standard and long roof versions.

This new Hiace is redesigned inside and out. There are two key inspirations in the design and engineering of the All-New Hiace. The first is to create a vehicle that increases productivity. The second is to provide safe, comfortable, and reliable transport for people everywhere.

Again, the engine position of the bus was changed; both driver and passenger can experience better ergonomics, without the heat and vibration emanating underneath their seats. This also results in better serviceability, as the engine becomes easier to access compared to the previous make.

“The Hiace was developed using the key words of “Hiace Pride,” and from the concept of being a faithful partner that makes people feel safe, satisfied, and proud. Owners, drivers, and passengers know they are in good hands when they own, drive, and ride in a Hiace,” commented Chief Engineer Takuo Ishikawa, who was responsible for development.

Engine

The 2019 Toyota Hiace Bus will be powered by either a naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine or a 2.8-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel, with a choice between a six-speed manual or an automatic transmission.

Exterior

Two body types are available: Normal/Standard Roof and Long/High Roof.
Leveraging the semi-bonnet package, the Hiace’s most important features―its reliability, toughness, and functional beauty―are evolved and enhanced, creating an external style that suggests a comfortable and sophisticated space.

Interior

Layouts with multiple rows of seats or increased storage space are available to suit various uses*.
Up to 17 people can be carried in the “Commuter” versions―the most in its class―for private bus use.
A specialized interior and functions for comfort are adorned in the new “Tourism” versions.
The “Van” versions feature storage space sufficiently large for pallets from any country or region.
The comfortable interior design provides peace of mind while functionality for driver and passenger needs is upgraded, as demonstrated by large door pockets and generous under-seat stowage.

Africa is one of the locations where this new Toyota Hiace Bus will be largely sold.

You may have been seeing a lot of Toyota Vehicles on our Nigerian roads because it’s one of the brands most preferred by Nigerians. Most of these Toyota Vehicles you see were imported from countries like Dubai, USA and Canada. Most importers go for the American specification as you would always hear “American Spec.” But do you know there is Toyota cars specifically built for Nigeria?

Toyota produces vehicles to meet specific regional conditions. These usually have to do with compatibility issues relating to fuel chemical composition, terrains and general environmental conditions. Toyota Nigeria Limited sells vehicles made to operate optimally in the Nigerian market.

It is good you know that the prices of cars sold by Toyota Nigeria Limited through their accredited dealers differ from the ones you get from unofficial dealers. This is why:
