vibrant40: Hi everyone,
I salute all the great programmers in the house. More knowledge to your brain.
I am new to programming, although I have the zeal since I was very young, I have always wanted to work for Etisalat .
I began Python some weeks ago and I think I am done with the basics. But with the many news online and as a Nigerian who want to make at least some cash for upkeep, I feel lost. I kept seeing Python as something that is not gonna bring me some cash any time soon (please don't think I am money oriented, you know there is SAPA everywhere now.)
Please sirs, what is your advice for on the path of programming I should to at least make some money by December?
And please sirs, I need a mentor please for goodness sake.
somebody should just gimme chance and lemme be his mentee pleaseeeeeee A lot of people keep making the mistake of learning a programming language just for learning sake then try to figure out what to do with the knowledge down the road. My guy you are still a couple months or years away from making any money with python depending on the path you choose to follow. You can choose between web development (front-end, backend or full stack ) or Data analytics, machine learning and Artificial intelligence. I always advice people to pick a path and learn what you need. Anything data would take a long time so if you're looking to make some money perhaps as a freelancer as soon as possible you should go for front end web development and then eventually learn both front end and back end to become a full stack developer. N/B: Most people don't hire entry level backend/fullstack developers so as a newbie I'll say learn front-end and leave python for now because you don't need it for now.

TastyFriedPussy: I'll be getting a laptop soon for web development but it doesn't come with an ssd drive... I plan on running Linux OS on it considering it's more faster and light weight than windows.. Now my question is this.
I want my laptop to be fast as possible but I can't afford an ssd(freaking expensive). will running Linux instead of windows on an HDD laptop make the laptop any faster? until I'm ready to get an ssd?
Note: my laptop's spec's not that bad I5 3rd gen 8gb ram Get a laptop with an ssd if you can, it'll be a good investment. But you can definitely start learning with this laptop but expect lags here and there and you may have to upgrade to a better laptop in the near future |

yusman14: What if it is core i3,5th gen, 8gig RAM, 500HDD Is it ok for web development and android development? For web development yes but I'm not too sure about Android development. I believe you would have to be running an SDK and an emulator simultaneously so you might experience some lag and the softwares might take forever to boot when launched which could hugely affect productivity. I always advice people to go for SSD if you're a developer. An SSD laptop with the same spec could easily be 3 times faster. |

Aderewah: I’ve seen a thousand comments from ibos mocking yorubas over deaths of children in Owo. You people should keep it up. Both ibos and Fulani masters. This is a sad incident and anyone with a heart should be sad that it happened but i think the south westerners need to do some self reflection. The south east has been shouting for years now, complaining about the gentle treatment of some certain criminal elements by the FG. Perhaps this would serve as an eye opener for the Yoruba people. What kind of people will kill children too? One thing is certain - This was either done by the Fulani terrorist or indigens of ondo but only one of these two scenarios is likely because nobody will kill their own children abi will they blame this one on ESN and UGM too? Another thing I've noticed is that a lot of people having ibo usernames and pretending to be Igbos are not actually Igbos. It would seem that some people have interest in dividing the South. |

Temmylee01: Good morning to prodigies here, pls I just want to know if Dell laptop, core i5 500gb 4gb RAM is ok for programming , Cuz I'm considering on getting Dell instead of hp, and that's what I can afford for now as hp is not as strong as Dell and hp is kind of expensive dunno why. If the ram is expandable then get it and add another 4gb RAM to make it 8gb and you're good to go |

Kaycee54321: So it's looking like it's easier for a software developer to land a foreign remote job or migrate abroad than a data professional??
Because, in my own space, I only know of one data guy who got a foreign job (earns upward of 1.2M a month) compared to several software developers that are doing numbers much better than that...
I'm trying to give myself 18 months to pick the basics of software dev so that I could get into that zone...
Because, passion is good but the truth is I'm in the game to survive. Heck, I'm a data analyst now but if you see wetin I study for school, you go run... You're speaking facts bro. Most data related jobs require an MSC or better to get. I've seen people start learning web development or software development and land a great job within 6 months but data professional jobs require a whole lot more. I feel like I'm in too deep to quit lol but if I'm to start all over again i probably would go the web development or software development route. The only upside for data professionals is that once you get a foot in you can relax and keep doing what you know, web devs and software devs would need to keep learning the latest and greatest tools plus the bar to get in is low so the competition is very high. I go like join this your circle oh lol. I'm think of creating a network of ambitious Machine learning, Data engineering and data science enthusiasts. |

mikebabs101: Thanks so much sir . It's really fustrating being rejected not because one is not capable but just because one in Nigeria. On many occasions ,I have been at the point being scheduled for interviews, the moment the company view your LinkedIn page and resume and confirm one is currently in Nigeria, they come up with comments like,"even the position 100percent remote, we are hiring from European Union countries and North America" . I really don't know how people with remote data analyst position got theirs, cos I don't believe it's just about skill developments. I'm good with excel, Sql, R programming , python, Power bi and Tableau, machine learning. I have started courses in cloud engineering, but I'm starting to believe remote job offer is not just about what you can do The struggle is real bro . You just gotta keep trying. A lot of European employers are specifically looking for Africans and Asians. If they're rejecting you after viewing your linkedin profile then perhaps you should package your linkedin better. You mentioned graduating with a 1st class, but i don't think that matters if you are looking for remote jobs. I believe Past work experience and projects would go a long way. Lastly, most Data Science related jobs and back end development in general are not entry level and people are really careful about who they trust their data and database management with because any mistake would cost the company a lot. Frontend Web developers have it much easier, they just have to have one or two good past projects and they can land a job. If getting a remote job is proving too difficult then perhaps you should consider getting an entry level, on site Data Analytics job in Nigeria so you can have industry experience to display on your resume. That's the route I'm considering too. |

Azzrael: Starting with python as my first language I have no knowledge of any language before. I'm a fast learner and I hope to see this through. Is python a good language for a first? I'm about to apply for a course on python on udemy. Easy to learn and has a wide range of applications, hence a beginner friendly language. Don't just learn a programming language for learning sake, you should figure out what aspect of tech you are interested in and learn the tools you need to succeed. There's Software development, web development, game development, cloud and database management and Data science/machine learning/AI. Each of these areas require different skill sets, so do your research so you don't end up wasting your time learning things you may never use. Good luck |

No prior knowledge of programing. I think it's quite good. Most of the courses offered by IBM are decent or better. I took the IBM data science certification. If you have no prior knowledge of programming then it might be helpful to do some further reading when you get to the python course |
