Technology MarketS. Africa, Ghana And Nigeria Top The List Of Mobile Application Users In Africa by avurlerby(op): 5:46pm On Nov 11, 2016
Opera, has released its State of the Mobile Web Africa 2016 Report, highlighting mobile internet trends across the continent, including consumer browsing behaviour and app usage.
Opera – known for its compression technology and mobile browsers, including Opera Mini – compiles regular, global mobile web reports, shedding light on opportunities and challenges within the digital environment.

South Africa leads in mobile application usage with around a third of the population using mobile apps. This compares to 31% in Ghana, 28% in Nigeria, 19% in Kenya and 18% in Uganda.

Nigeria is the most ‘mobilised’ country in the world, ahead of South Africa and India, with 76% of internet traffic going through mobile. Between 2011 and 2016 smartphone penetration rose 121% from 7m to 15.5m15 and Opera’s Android users grew by 5,379% in the same period.

As of June 2016, Nigeria had 16 million Facebook users, around 70% of whom are accessing Facebook via Opera Mini. Nigeria’s most used apps according to Opera include WhatsApp, Facebook, Google Quick Search, Instagram and Chrome. Instagram is the most data-intensive app.

South African users are also more likely to access news and e-commerce apps than their African counterparts, with the most used apps (according to Opera’s data management application, Opera Max) being Chrome, Facebook, Truecaller, OLX, Skype and News24. In addition, Opera Mini users are accessing local news as much as 300% more than in 2014, with popular websites in SA being EWN, Supersport and the Daily Sun.

When looking at the rest of Africa, Ghanaians, Kenyans, Seychellois and Mauritians are the highest data users with an average usage of over 160MB/month. Users from Tanzania (22%) are most likely to visit YouTube followed by South Africa (20%) and Ghana (19%).

Data Compression is key
“We believe data compression is as relevant and useful now as it was a decade ago – in fact, with the growth of smartphone penetration coupled with prohibitively high data costs, it’s a critical enabler,” says Richard Monday, VP for Opera, Africa. “The #DataMustFall movement in South Africa demonstrates that people don’t feel like they’re getting value for money. The compression technology used in Opera Mini and Opera Max helps consumers save on data costs and addresses issues relating to congestion and page sizes. Ultimately, a lighter mobile web enhances usability, functionality and access to the internet – even in poor network conditions.”

In 2016, Opera’s compression technology has allowed South Africans to save approximately US$111m in data costs, with Nigerians and Kenyans saving US$280m and US$116m, respectively.

Opera currently has 100 million users in Africa, with an 86.41% market share in Kenya, 71.83% in Nigeria and 53.1% in South Africa.

ComputersGot Windows 10? Now Enable Godmode To Feel In Total Control Of Your Computer by avurlerby(op): 2:34pm On Nov 10, 2016
Did you know that Windows 10 has its own hidden GodMode, a cheat that gives you, well, god-like powers while you're on your desktop PCs/laptops? Ok, we exaggerated that a bit, maybe just a little.
But, wait, that 'hidden' GodMode part is real and it does give you some powers. It won't exactly make you god, but hey, it's still crazy fun.

Of course, those who play video games know what GodMode is. It's basically a trick (a cheap one at that) that lets you cheat your way through the game. It may be in the form of unlimited lives, unlimited gold or whatever. But, it's really cool and so much fun.
Windows 10 (just like Windows 7, and Windows cool also has a hidden GodMode that you can unearth and have total (well, almost) control over your system.
Here's how you do it...remember, this is for Windows 10 and Windows 10 alone and is version and platform independent...
-- Go to desktop and create a 'new' folder.
-- Rename it to the text string GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}
-- Note that you can replace the text GodMode with anything you feel like, just that GodMode sounds so much cooler.
-- The {ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C} extension however stays as it is.
-- That's it. Feel like god already?
Ok, you didn't, sorry to burst your bubble but it still gives you access all of your operating system's control panels from within a single folder, doesn't it? Isn't that cool enough?
Once you've renamed the folder, its icon will instantly change to resemble a control panel containing dozens of control options inside.
Moreover, the trick applies to Windows 8.1 as well.
If you're on Windows 7, the same trick applies however with a different extension. For Windows 7, renaming the folder to GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C} does the trick. Note that, this also applies for Windows Vista users.
So, there you have it. Anybody on Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8.1 or the recently launched Windows 10 can play god.
Make sure you tell us the number of control options you unlock in our comments section.

RomanceLadies, Why You Can't Get Married Or Stay In Marriage by avurlerby(op): 11:39am On May 20, 2015
Our ladies end up single or chased out by their husband due to too much media exposure -
It is disheartening how a lady will glue her eyes on her mobile phone from morning to night, only to raise it up and focus on television to watch fake celebrity entertainment. Tell me, what else will dominate the mindset of such ladies aside how to live the fake lifestyles the see on social media and TV?

Many African ladies now dislike cooking and home chores
-
Because they had been totally brainwashed by movies showcasing men playing the role of women in a family, and due to excessive exposure to American media that promotes gender-equality in a destructive way, our ladies are loosing their place in their husband's heart. African family setting is unique and that is why previous African marriages last longer and envious to the whites.

With this attitude, how do you expect an African man to desire to marry you who claim to be a modern lady when he knows he is only buying more headache and trouble than helper for himself?

You Don’t Bring Value Into The Life Of The Man You Marry or Are Dating -
Your best friend married without contributing anything to the man that married her, doesn’t mean it will work for you that way. Think, work towards equipping yourself so that you can be a value and also add value to his life to convince him that you are worth committing to.

Adding value to his life isn’t by giving him money, or material gifts, nope... be a good wife, respectful, stay away from your mother or friends evil counsels, and above all be his best friend, helping him attain his goals in life, lending him moral, mental and spiritual support.

Your Mother and Friends Run Your Life -
How do you expect your husband or the man you are dating to trust you when you still allow your mum and clique of friends to be dictating which man you meet is worthy your love and which is not?

When will you wake up and face the fact that some of your so called best friends may not want you to marry the best man and that your own mother may just be destroying your life for her selfish reason?

Lack of Manners, Character, Wisdom and Good Home Upbringing -
Your ‘hot girl’, ‘pretty girl’ looks will win you men; both the good and the bad, but your inner beauty, your character and manner are the things that will determine whether a man would marry you and, most importantly, keep you in his house as a cherished wife.

Ladies, to achieve this, do away with being possessive, challenging your man, manipulating him for selfish purpose. A decent man will love you, once you prove yourself worthy as a responsible lady.

Do not allow yourself to become a victim while trying to be too smart. Be humble, reap a good reward!

PoliticsThe Five Architects Of Jonathan’s Defeat by avurlerby(op): 12:46pm On Apr 02, 2015
Nigerians made history. For the first time in the nation’s democratic history, an incumbent president has been defeated. While incumbent governors have been defeated in the past, it was a feat many thought might not be possible at the centre for a long time to come. But Nigerians, by their votes, have shown the exit door to a government they deemed has not served them right.

But the trouncing of Goodluck Jonathan at the polls was not a happenstance. Perhaps, if there were those who did not see this coming, it was probably the president himself and some of his loyalists. Beyond this, however, there are some five key individuals who contributed to the electoral downfall of the president. Their actions and what they represented ensured that in less than two months from now, Jonathan will become a former president.
BUHARI: THE ULTIMATE CROWD PULLER

He is a man after the heart of the talakawas, the masses, in the northern part of Nigeria. These are young men and women who fanatically follow him – and have been doing so since 2003 when he first threw his hat in the ring. Buhari has always had a cult-like followership in up north but it was difficult to replicate in other parts of the country. However, the support base of the retired general moved beyond the north to the strategic south-western part of the country which has a strong media and publicity base, in addition to a large population of voters. From a man who consistently won 12 million votes in the north without any major finance or structure, he was successful sold to southern voters and this marked a major turning point for Jonathan, who would ordinarily expect that as a southerner, he would be the preferred candidate in the region. ‘Sai Buhari’ (only Buhari) that was only restricted to the north alone suddenly became the catchphrase in the mouths of both young and old down south. Even when questions were raised over his academic certificate and health, his followers, especially those who are very active in the social media, insisted they would vote for him nonetheless. Jonathan’s exit was inevitable.

TINUBU: THE UNDYING POLITICAL CRAFT MASTER
Hate him or love him, Bola Ahmed Tinubu is one politician you ignore and you later bite your fingers. Simple as that. Since he survived the PDP tsunami of 2003 when he returned as governor of Lagos State in an election that saw five of his former colleagues in the then AD sent packing, he has gone about the business of checkmating the ruling PDP with so much passion and determination. Blessed with an uncanny ability to identify political as well as electoral assets, Tinubu was said to have said immediately after the 2011 elections reasoned that if Buhari could poll 12 million votes without much resources and national appeal, then he was the man to be pushed forward for 2015. But before then, there was the need to build a strong, broad based political party that would be strong enough to serve as counterfoil to the PDP juggernaut. He and Buhari started consultations. The product was the All Progressives Congress (APC). He got disgruntled elements within the PDP to jump ship and for the first time since 1999, the opposition was able to speak with one voice.

AMAECHI: THE BULL IN CHINA SHOP
When Rotimi Amaechi, governor of Rivers state, wanted to return as the chairman of the very powerful Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) in 2013, his party, the PDP, did not want him because by that time, he had become a thorn in the flesh of President Jonathan. Amaechi and the president’s wife had fallen out over the demolition of waterfront houses under an urban renewal programme. It became a media war. The war shifted to the NGF. But Amaechi, backed by governors from opposition party and PDP rebel governors, would have none of that. Even when the governors had two parallel elections, public sentiment was on the side of the Amaechi faction. And he went about the business of Jonathan’s political demolition with alacrity. He used the NGF to fight the president and formed an alliance with opposition governors to make life miserable for Jonathan. It was a terrible embarrassment for the president, coming from a fellow Niger Deltan, and Amaechi’s persistence did more political damage obviously more than what the president budgeted for.

SARAKI: THE NEMESIS OF PDP
One of the most underrated politicians in Nigeria must be Bukola Saraki, former governor of Kwara state. As chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum between 2007 and 2011, his influence among his powerful colleagues ballooned, and he eventually nominated Amaechi to be his successor. That gave him considerable influence on NGF even after his tenure as governor. Then, his loyalist, Kawu Baraje, became the acting national chairman of the PDP, further giving him a strong hold on the party structure. However, Jonathan, probably eyeing the 2015 elections, dislodged Baraje from the PDP secretariat. That was the final push for Bukola who promptly engineered the breakup of the ruling party in conjunction with other anti-Jonathan forces within and without. On August 31, 2013, the PDP had its convention in Abuja with the sole aim of electing a new chairman. However, rather than that making the headlines, the biggest news of the day was the staging of a walk-out by section of the party led by Bukola Saraki, former governor of Kwara state, and seven governors from the party. They were later to be known as the new PDP and they became unofficial opposition party to the PDP. When they eventually merged with the newly formed APC, they left the PDP bleeding as a spate of defections followed.

OBASANJO: THE TIRELESS RABBLE-ROUSER
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo went about the demolition of the Goodluck Jonathan political brand with such determination that left many analysts wondering if there was nothing more to it than a statesman and his desire for good governance. But Obasanjo had an axe to grind with Jonathan. Having helped the latter to Aso Rock in 2011, he discovered, to his dismay, that Jonathan was keeping him at an arm’s length and that Tony Anenih, Obasanjo’s friend-turned-foe, had become the most powerful elder in the PDP. Bone by bone, Obasanjo began to take Jonathan to pieces. He would later ask most of his loyalists in the south-west, such as Olagunsoye Oyinlola, Isiaka Adeleke and Segun Oni, to join forces with the APC while he became a ‘political consultant’ to the party. On the international level, Obasanjo used his influence to get Nigeria’s allies such as the US and the UK to downgrade Jonathan and promote the candidature of Buhari. Obasanjo’s frequent public criticism of Jonathan often resonated with the views of many Nigerians. Jonathan did not need a political enemy like Obasanjo, and he had his hands full till the last minute.

Politics‘na Only You Waka Come?’ And Other Things That Damaged President Jonathan by avurlerby(op):
And so, President Goodluck Jonathan has become the first sitting president to lose an election in Nigeria. Not only that, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) seems poised to become the minority in the national assembly, completing the demystification of a party that used to brand itself as Africa’s biggest party — one that was supposed to rule for 60 years.

Why did Jonathan lose out in the power game? There are probably a million and one reasons, the biggest being that the opposition finally got its act together and fielded a man who has a natural street appeal. The frustrations of Nigerians with the PDP have been on for ages, and the successful formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) should count as the biggest factor in these elections. But Jonathan had had it coming all along — starting from the removal of fuel subsidy in January 2012. Below are some of the reasons that weakened his appeal to Nigerians since his overwhelming victory in the 2011 elections. You are free to add yours in the comments section. Anti-deregulation protests in January 2012

OCCUPY LAGOS

The increase in the pump price of petrol in January 2012 was the first point of conflict between Jonathan and the populace, especially the youth. The timing — coming while people had travelled for Christmas — was a major factor in the popular resistance, but the allegation that nearly N2 trillion was spent on fuel subsidy alone in 2011 further fuelled public anger. Citizens held Occupy Lagos rallies, with Ojota being the biggest meeting point in the state. There was a paralysing strike by the labour unions. The social media, which hitherto worked in favour of the president, buzzed with anti-Jonathan sentiments. Although Jonathan held the opposition responsible for the sustained protests against deregulation, he never really recovered from the devastating damage the fuel price rise did to his government — despite cutting the pump price to pacify the protesters.

‘NA ONLY YOU WAKA COME?’

In the tragicomedy that followed the April 2014 kidnap of nearly 300 girls at the Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, Borno state, Patience Jonathan, wife of the president, worsened an already sad affair by trivialising it. In what looked like a well rehearsed drama, she openly lambasted officials of the Borno state government and the school principal, and suggested that nobody was kidnapped. Then she shed crocodile tears in the cameras, wailing: “There is God o. All this blood that you are sharing in Borno… remember there is God in everything we are doing.” She famously asked the school’s principal: “Na only you waka come?” (“You came alone?”). She was probably expecting more officials from the state. The video went viral and global. The joke was on her at a time the world was mourning the plight of hundreds of kidnapped teenagers.

BRING BACKS OUR GIRLS MOVEMENT

The kidnap of the Chibok girls and Patience Jonathan’s drama led to the birth of a movement that gave Jonathan a nightmare he would never forget: the Bring Back Our Girls (BBOG) group. The movement parodied the name of Bring Back the Book, an initiative launched by Jonathan to encourage a reading culture among school children. BBOG made a global impact, drawing international attention to the kidnap saga at a time the government was accused of not doing anything to address the issue. The security agencies and Jonathan’s supporters adopted a hostile attitude towards the group. They were threatened and harassed. However, the campaign got more popular, and #BringBackOurGirls was trending on Twitter across the world. International celebrities carried the placard, the most famous being Michelle Obama, the American first lady. Jonathan got the most negative global publicity from the activities of BBOG.

THE ALAMIEYESEIGHA PARDON

In March 2013, Jonathan did the unthinkable — he granted state pardon to DSP Alamieyeseigha, who had been convicted for corruption in 2007. Alamieyeseigha was the governor of Bayelsa state from 1999 to 2005. Jonathan was his deputy, but when his principal was arrested in London and impeached on his return to Nigeria on money laundering charges, he became the substantive governor. Alamieyeseigha’s conviction was said to have been “arrived at” as part of a plea bargain deal by the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua to get him to persuade Niger Delta militants to ceasefire and accept an amnesty. A state pardon was said to be on the cards, but Yar’Adua died in the process. Jonathan eventually granted the pardon — worsening his public image as a president who is soft on corruption.

BOKO HARAM

Beyond the kidnap of Chibok girls which drew international attention to Boko Haram in Nigeria, many Nigerians had grown weary of government’s failure to contain the militants. Initially, there were sustained arguments that the opposition was behind the menace, which many thought might play to the political advantage of Jonathan. However, as the carnage went on, many Nigerians grew tired, and the tide began to turn against Jonathan. The impression that Jonathan treated Boko Haram with kid gloves was worsened when the elections were postponed by six weeks in February and the military began to record a series of victories over the insurgents, in collaboration with neighbouring countries. Many potential voters were not impressed, insinuating that Jonathan could have done that all along. Explanations that Nigeria had difficulties procuring arms to equip the military did not impress them.

SANUSI’S LETTER

The notion that the government of President Jonathan is corrupt was strengthened in 2013 by a letter written to him by the then governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Malam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, who alleged that billions of dollars of oil revenue had not been remitted to the federation account by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). He also alleged that monies were spent without appropriation, especially on kerosene subsidy. The president did not respond to the letter. After it was leaked to the press, Jonathan reportedly asked Sanusi to resign but he refused. Jonathan eventually suspended him and he never returned to office until, coincidentally, the emir of Kano died and Sanusi ascended the throne of his forefathers. Jonathan never recovered from the allegation of the “missing” $20 billion, despite reports that a PwC audit gave the NNPC an all-clear. Tambuwal and Jonathan: No love lost TAMBUWAL FACE-OFF In October 2014, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, speaker of the house of representatives, announced his defection from PDP to APC, although it was more of a formality. To flex muscles, Abba Suleiman, the inspector general of police, withdrew Tambuwal’s security aides, quoting the constitution and declaring that Tambuwal was no longer speaker. This irked Nigerians, including those sympathetic to Jonathan. Matters were made worse a few weeks later when police officers took over the premises of the national assembly and tried to prevent the lawmakers from reconvening to discuss a request to extend emergency rule in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states. Coming very close an election, the Tambuwal face-off added more fatal blows to the political standing of Jonathan. Although he later recognised Tambuwal as speaker, the deed had already been done, as the saying goes. AND OTHER REASONS You can pick your choice. Is it the president’s retort of “I don’t give a damn” on national television when asked to make his asset declaration public? Or the delay in taking action over Stella Oduah, former minister of aviation, after she was indicted in the BMW armoured car affair? Or failure to act on the various allegations against Diezani Alison-Madueke, minister of petroleum resources? Or his failure to rein in his wife, who constantly brought controversy to Aso Rock? Or failure to discipline the minister of interior, Abba Moro, who oversaw the deaths of applicants during the Nigeria Immigration Service recruitment exercise? What did the most damage to Jonathan's presidency?
