The negligence of songwriting in Nigeria.


Nigeria is a great country blessed with great musicians and what not,but its no news that songwriters in nigeria arent appreciated,songwriters need to go to extra lengths to keep their pockets far from dry,the artists would rather end up writing meaningless songs and lyrics and it seems thats what the fans want too,i have heard lyrics like "skiborobo skiba skiboro" from an artist,and he sang it with so much confidence like what he said made total sense,i really cant blame him,i dont want to call names but the song really got me thinking
arent there any songwriters in his label?
There are even weird ideas that songwriters are only used for RnB and pop artists,its extremely wrong because i write hip hop songs and sell them quite a lot,a very unique fact about songwriters in nigeria is that we are extremely few,nothing more than 100 songwriters in a nation of over 150 million people,while the rappers,singers,producers,video directors are quite a lot,diving into millions.
I always questioned that fact until i remembered the advantage of it,songwriters are able to come together as one team and gain outright monopoly,we spread accross the nation in different territories,i as a songwriter,i charge very high for stealthily written songs,its my duty since am part of the monopoly aggreement.
As much as i want songwriters to be appreciated and gain more fame and recognition in nigeria,i cant help but wish the opposite too because if we start getting recognition then more people take up the art and if more people take up the art,there will be less payment and lesser amount fo artists to write for because by then everyone would be a songwriter,just like everyone is a rapper now,such loss is detrimental to my art and to my work,so at this point,i cant help but wish both ways..whichever way,i shall accept the outcome and live through it because when it all comes down,all i really want to do is make great music and inspire the world.

The lyrical content that made wizkid is grossly missing in most of his songs today so I'm not surprised that someone else did the penning. On the contrary, Skales' songs have a lot of that content but it doesn't stop there. To turn a good song into a hit, he needs more than content. I hope he can find the missing link.

yeah i agree,i have to agree that skales can write a lotta good songs but is not good ar delivering the perfect sound,i used to be like that before,until i decided to find a new way to clean up my flaws,electronica autotune,i end up sounding like WILL.I.AM or T.pain at best,its good to find ones flaw and take control of it,by the way,read my signature

I remember Tesh Carter, totally captivated me with her single ft Chidinma. She raps far vetter than most naija male rappers, I guess she hasn't blown cuz she hasn't been in a record label that can push her out...but she's awesome

I'm not so much a fan of Rayce, but he's aight. He could be better though, and yes, you could say his record label is partly to blame for his lack of a proper career

Victoria Kimani, I like that song of hers, Kimani. Really nice, I think Chocolate City is more of a rap label in the likes of Bad Boy Entertainment, so singers may find it difficult to make it in that label...
Same applies to Nosa, I loved 'Pray for You'...he has an album now, but it hasn't been promoted one bit. He's too good to languish in Choc City

With Tekno, I've never thought of triple MG as a good label, the only artiste of note they have is Iyanya and even he has at best an average career, he's like a C-list artiste, the label is kinda like HKN, but HKN's biggest artiste is wayyyy bigger than Iyanya.

I agree with Phenom as well, there's just something not clicking with him, but that dude is almost as good as Vector. I loved Shukushuku bambam when it came out, haven'y heard from him since then

Dipp is another artiste that needs a change, to think there was a time he was compared to P-square and Usher. He had the looks and the steps, height and body as well...even his music was good, dunno what happened since Popoff Selecta

the problem with dipp is plain simple,he cant sing,he uses autotune a whole lot and all his videos then was special effects,he probably followed mex about for mex to make such great videos

the lyrics were nothing to write home about,dipp should shave his new found mad man beard,he no fit am,go back to that sleek beard like mr wellington

am a songwriter and lyricist and i know the roots of such song thefts,skales was telling the truth when he said he wrote many songs on superstar album
