BusinessEconomic Effect Of A Devaluation Of The Currency by awesomet1(op): 9:47pm On Nov 26, 2014
A devaluation occurs in a fixed exchange rate. A depreciation occurs in a floating exchange rate system. Both mean a fall in the value of the currency. e.g. a devaluation in the Pound means it is worth less Euros.

Effects of a devaluation
1. Exports cheaper. A devaluation of the exchange rate will make exports more competitive and appear cheaper to foreigners. This will increase demand for exports

2. Imports more expensive. A devaluation means imports will become more expensive. This will reduce demand for imports.

3. Increased AD. A devaluation could cause higher economic growth. Part of AD is (X-M) therefore higher exports and lower imports should increase AD (assuming demand is relatively elastic). Higher AD is likely to cause higher Real GDP and inflation.

4. Inflation is likely to occur because:

Imports are more expensive causing cost push inflation.
AD is increasing causing demand pull inflation
With exports becoming cheaper manufacturers may have less incentive to cut costs and become more efficient. Therefore over time, costs may increase.
5. Improvement in the current account. With exports more competitive and imports more expensive, we should see higher exports and lower imports, which will reduce the current account deficit.

Evaluation of a Devaluation
The effect of a devaluation depends on:

1. Elasticity of demand for exports and imports. If demand is price inelastic, the a fall in the price of exports will lead to only a small rise in quantity. Therefore, the value of exports may actually fall. An improvement in the current account on the Balance of Payments depends upon the Marshall Lerner condition and the elasticity of demand for exports and imports

If PEDx + PEDm > 1 then a devaluation will improve the current account
The impact of a devaluation may take time to have effect. In the short term, demand may be inelastic, but over time demand may become more price elastic and have a bigger effect.
2. State of the global economy. If the global economy is in recession, then a devaluation may be insufficient to boost export demand. If growth is strong, then there will be a greater increase in demand. However, in a boom, a devaluation is likely to exacerbate inflation.

3.Inflation The effect on inflation will depend on other factors such as:

Spare capacity in the economy. E.g. in a recession, a devaluation is unlikely to cause inflation.
Do firms pass increased import costs onto consumers? Firms may reduce their profit margins, at least in the short run.
Import prices are not the only determinant of inflation. Other factors affecting inflation such as wage increases may be important.
4. It depends why the currency is being devalued. If it is due to a loss of competitiveness, then a devaluation can help to restore competitiveness and economic growth. If the devaluation is aiming to meet a certain exchange rate target, it may be inappropriate for the economy.

Oil Money: “Stop spending what is meant to be saved…” – IMF Warns Nigeria
Posted by: Roti November 2, 2012

The International Monetary Fund (IMF), one of Nigeria’s regular creditors, has cautioned Nigeria against frivolous spending, especially in her fiscal policies, given the uncertainty that still pervades the global economic scene.

The IMF’s Senior Resident Representative in Nigeria, Mr. Scott Rogers, who presented the World Economic Outlook, told journalists, in Abuja that Nigeria must take advantage of the current growth to strengthen her fiscal position by saving for the future, as there is no assurance of early global economic recovery.
In his words: “The global economic outlook remains uncertain. The global context has continued to witness slowing growth, mostly marked in the advanced economies… “If the world economy remains weak, it will continue to affect countries of the world especially those with strong ties with the US and the Euro area which could actually go into recession. Export growth in Sub-Sahara Africa has remained weak due to the weakening economies of the advanced countries”
According to Rogers, the Nigerian economy stands the risk of being faced with lower crude oil prices due to weak global economy and that as such a high oil price benchmark, as being proposed by the National Assembly could hurt the economy. Therefore, the challenges, he said, is for the nation to generate fiscal surplus while oil prices are high and use it to build the nation’s reserves, rather than drawing it down from the Excess crude Account to be spent. “Stop spending what is meant to be saved. Make the oil price rule effective,” he advised.

PoliticsArmy, Police Team Up To Rescue Mubi by awesomet1(op): 4:51pm On Nov 07, 2014
Ajoint operation of the military and Mobile Police units known as ‘Operation Guerilla’, has been launched to recapture Vimtim, the hometown of the Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh, and Mubi town from Boko Haram insurgents.

Checks revealed that police authorities yesterday, ordered the Mobile Police special unit to join Nigerian Army personnel at Marraba Mubi, about 18 kilometres from Mubi.

Although efforts made to confirm the new development from the 23rd Armoured Brigade in Yola and the Adamawa State Police Command failed, impeccable sources told Daily Sun that the joint force was making frantic efforts to invade the insurgents’ hideouts and dislodge them.

A source close to the police, however, said Mobile Policemen deployed to Mubi had received signals that their colleagues in the joint operation had reached Marraba Mubi.

Some residents of Marraba Mubi, who escaped the onslaught of the insurgents and were taking refuge in Yola, said they saw a detachment of Mobile Policemen on the roads leading to Mubi and Michika Local Government Areas .

“There is presence of stern-looking and heavily armed Mobile Policemen making frantic efforts to launch into the roads leading to Vimtim, Mubi and Michika towns, which are now under the control of Boko Haram insurgents,” one of them said.

Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports stated that most of the primary and secondary schools in Yola, the state capital, had been shut down indefinitely to avoid attacks by the insurgents.

Fear and apprehension heightened in the state following an attack on Ashaka Cement, where the insurgents allegedly carted away dynamites and explosive devices.

PoliticsHow 300 Nigerian Soldiers Left Their Post To Hide In Cameroon by awesomet1(op): 8:10am On Nov 03, 2014
ArmyNo fewer than 300 Nigerian soldiers fled to Cameroon when Boko Haram insurgents overran Mubi, the second largest city in Borno State from security forces on Wednesday, SUNDAY PUNCH has learnt.
Cameroonian military sources told our correspondent that Nigerian soldiers fled the north-eastern part of Nigeria, where the insurgency launched by the sect was raging, and crossed the Nigeria-Cameroon border.
The sources also said more Nigerian troops might have fled to other border towns in Cameroon after the Mubi attack. However, he added that their number had yet to be ascertained.
SUNDAY PUNCH also learnt that the deserting Nigerian soldiers would be moved away from the border areas to more secure locations, where they would be disarmed, fed and eventually repatriated to Nigeria.
The insurgents had taken over Mararaba Hildi, some few kilometres to Mubi town, on Tuesday, prompting a mass exodus of residents.
Hundreds of soldiers were said to have fled Mubi, which hosts two universities, as insurgents made advances to take over the town on Wednesday.
Speaking to SUNDAY PUNCH on Friday under the condition of anonymity, a senior Cameroonian military officer involved in the provision of welfare materials to the deserters, said, “They (Nigerian soldiers) are mostly around Boucla village in Bourha sub-division.
“So far, we can estimate the number of arrivals to be at about 300. These are the ones who arrived in uniform but we know that there are several others who shed their uniforms for civilian attires.”
The Mubi rout also forced thousands of Nigerian civilians to hit border villages in Cameroon in Benoue and Mayo Louti Divisions, and around Gachiga town.
It was, however, learnt that Cameroonian government was worried about the increasing number of refugees and where to keep them.
The relocation of Nigerian refugees was said to have become necessary as insurgents had previously attacked locations where fleeing Nigerian soldiers were housed.
Protests by indigenes of the border towns over attacks on the camps were said to have forced the Cameroonian government to adopt a policy of moving deserters far away from the border and out of the reach of Boko Haram.
It was further learnt that Cameroon had begun screening of deserters and refugees to prevent infiltration by insurgents.
“This time around, we are conducting a more thorough screening to avoid letting in Boko Haram infiltrators, who are known to inhabit the ranks of the Nigerian military,” an official of the Cameroonian government had told our correspondent in confidence.
Another Cameroonian military officer, who insisted on anonymity, expressed fears over possible infiltration of the country’s system through the refugee camps. He declined to give further details on how the screening was being conducted.
He said, “Taking them in is not something to make noise about. You and I know that we are in a military situation here. This is a war zone with Boko Haram spies crawling all over the place.
“The number we take and where we take them are obviously a military intelligence affair and nobody can give you that information, even if you were to approach the authorities in Yaounde.”
In a related development, SUNDAY PUNCH learnt that Boko Haram had been cultivating and recruiting local fighters among Cameroonian youths.
The sect is operating cells that have been in operation in Cameroon for over three years, recruiting through what a source described as “financial enticement and intimidation.”
Community leaders in the Far North region says thousands of Cameroonian youths had joined the ranks of Boko Haram since the beginning of the year.
“These are mostly young unemployed Cameroonians lured by handsome financial proposals by Boko Haram point men. Other Boko Haram sleeper cells are run by senior Islamists intimidated into doing the bidding of the sect,” one of the traditional leaders in the area, who refused to have his name in print, told our correspondent.
Recruitment of youths by the sect is said to be gaining ground in Cameroon and other neighbouring countries, raising fears that the activities of the insurgents might spread to other parts of West-African sub-region.
The sect had abducted seven members of the Fournier family from France in Cameroon in 2013. They were later released after a huge amount of money was reportedly paid as ransom.
Senior military sources confirmed that some high-ranking Boko Haram members arrested in Cameroon were exchanged for the release of the wife of the Cameroonian Vice-Prime Minister, Ahmadou Ali, and 16 members of his family who were abducted in Kolofata on July 27, as well as 10 Chinese road workers abducted in Waza in April, 2014.
In another related development, top Cameroonian military officials have insisted there is a close cooperation between the Nigerian and Cameroonian armies.
Information on the total number of Boko Haram insurgents detained in Cameroon has been classified as military intelligence.
However, it was learnt that the Cameroonian military had invited their Nigerian counterparts to interrogate Boko Haram suspects, Abakar Ali alias Mustapha Umar, Mahamat Ali and Issiaka Guere, who were arrested on September 23, 2014.
Other suspected members of the sect in detention, who include Cameroonians, will be tried by a special military tribunal in Yaounde, Cameroon, it was learnt.
“We cannot tell you their numbers now because investigations are still going on. When the investigations will be completed, there is the possibility that some of the people being held now on suspicion of being members of Boko Haram might be found to be innocent.
“Others would surely be finally identified as Cameroonians. The decision as to the fate of those found to be foreigners will be taken after the conclusion of the investigations. But I must tell you that besides Cameroonians and Nigerians, there are also members of Boko Haram from other neighbouring countries, which names we cannot cite now”, an official involved in the investigation disclosed.
However, the Cameroonian authorities are said to be reluctant on the repatriation of suspected leaders of the sect in their detention, as they might return to the battlefield should they escape
When our correspondent contacted the Director of Defence Information, Maj.-Gen Chris Olukolade, for his reaction to the issue, he said he would not comment on it.
“I won’t comment on that,” he said.
In August, the Cameroonian Army Spokesman, Lt.-Col. Didier Badjek, had said Nigerian troops had fled to Cameroon after intense fighting with Boko Haram.
But Olukolade, had refuted the desertion claim, saying the soldiers merely strayed into Cameroon.
While Cameroonian authorities said over 700 Nigerian soldiers fled Boko Haram advances into Cameroon, Nigerian authorities had insisted that only 480 went into Cameroonian territory on “technical manoeuver.”
In recent times, Nigerian military have been battling with mutiny and have set up court martials to try soldiers who fled from battle.
On August 27, the military leadership arrested several soldiers, who deserted the army. The arrested soldiers came from different battalions.
A month after, the Defence Headquarters announced that another set of 60 soldiers would be arraigned before a General Court Martial by military authorities in Abuja on October 2 for mutiny. The soldiers allegedly committed mutiny on August 4, 2014 by refusing to join troops in Maiduguri for “an operation.”
Their arraignment which was to take place at the Sani Abacha Barracks in Abuja came as some of the 12 soldiers convicted on September 15, 2014 by the GCM notified the Court of Appeal of their intention to challenge their sentences.
The GCM headed by Brig. Gen. C. Okonkwo had sentenced 12 out of 18 soldiers found guilty of mutiny among other offences to death. Five of them were discharged and acquitted and one sentenced to 28 days’ imprisonment with hard labour and reprimand.

PoliticsBurkina Faso President Resigns by awesomet1(op): 3:36pm On Oct 31, 2014
Burkina Faso President Blaise Compaore has resigned, according to an official communique broadcast on local Burkinabe media outlets Friday. Compaore said he stepped down to preserve peace in the country and to let a transitional authority lead the country until elections can be held.
[Previous story, published at 4:32 a.m. ET]
The President of Burkina Faso pledged to stay in power until a new leader is democratically elected, despite violent protests demanding an end to his 27-year rule in the West African country.
President Blaise Compaore said Thursday he had dissolved the government and will lead a transitional administration.
"On my part, I'll remain available and open to dialogue during the transition period, at the end of which, I'll relay power to the next democratically elected President," he said.
His words could further inflame tensions in the landlocked nation.
The military seized control Thursday and set a dusk-to-dawn curfew in what one general described as an effort to protect lives and restore order.

Unrest has gripped Burkina Faso -- a key partner for Western countries in the campaign against al Qaeda -- as protests against Compaore's government turned violent Thursday.
Demonstrators stormed parliament, setting fire to the building.
Gen. Honore Nabere Traore told reporters in the capital city of Ouagadougou that the dissolution of the government was in the best interest of the country.
Map: Burkina FasoMap: Burkina Faso
"An interim authority will be set up in order to prepare the conditions for the return to normal constitutional order within a period of 12 months at the latest," Traore said.
In a government communique read on national radio, Compaore asked for an end to the violence.
He also withdrew a proposed constitutional amendment that included a provision that would allow him to seek another term in office, according to the communique.
Compaore has been in office since he took power following a bloody coup in 1987. The opposition has demanded his immediate resignation.
In Bobo-Dioulasso, the country's second largest city, protesters reportedly tore down a statue of Compaore.
The incident followed the reports of protesters storming the parliament building, where lawmakers were set to vote on a motion to allow Compaore to extend his time in power.
Flights in and out of Ouagadougou have been suspended, according to the Burkina Faso Embassy in Washington. Embassy personnel told CNN that it was still issuing visas but that there were no flights at the moment.
The West, particularly France, considers Burkina Faso a key ally in the fight against al Qaeda. The country was formerly known as the Republic of Upper Volta when it was established in 1958 as a self-governing colony under France.

PoliticsOpen Letter To Nigerians By Aisha Falode by awesomet1(op): 7:39pm On Oct 21, 2014
It is with a heavy heart that I read about the death of the son of Chief Alameiyeseigha on the streets of Dubai; an incident that immediately jolted me back in time thanks to the bizarre similarities to that of my son as regards “cause of death”.

My son was said by the Dubai authorities to have jumped down from a balcony, dismissing it as "suicide", same with Chief Alameiyeseigha’s son.

I am saddened that this has happened despite my nationwide campaign to stop this happening AGAIN by putting all relevant government agencies on notice, in vain.

For record emphasis, my son was thrown from the balcony of a 17th floor apartment in Manchester Tower in Dubai. A Saudi resident in Dubai confessed to the murder; he had my son’s blood on his t-shirt, he had my son’s blood on his knuckles and boasted about serving time for 25 years in prison if it comes to the worst.

His murderer has a name—Faisal Aldakmary Al-Nasser.

There were witnesses to this murder, they have written statements verbally and orally corroborating what the murderer said. I have put all this together to make this easy for the Nigerian government to help me get justice for my son in Dubai.

I warned the Nigerian government that Nigerian youths were being killed in Dubai on a daily basis as confirmed by our embassy in Dubai. I also warned parents about the danger of Dubai.

I also stated repeatedly, that if justice was not gotten for my son that another murder will happen. Indeed there have been many more after my son although not mentioned because they do not have a voice. But now, there is one so close to government that has been struck.

I did not have to be a soothsayer to know this. Many more will happen until we get Justice for Toba Falode, and all those who have been murdered in cold blood in Dubai.

We cannot stand by and watch our youths lives being down played over and above “collaboration and partnership” with a country that hates us with so much passion, that they are cutting down the lives of our young ones in cold blood crudely and viciously and yet we seek “partnership and collaboration” in investment with this same country.

Our ambassador in the UAE, Ambassador Ibrahim Auwalu, must be called back to Nigeria to answer to every young soul that has been lost to Dubai unaccounted for due to his lack of responsibility in office.

The Foreign Ministry also, must be asked questions on what they have done about Toba Falode’s case 8 months after. It took Israel less than 48 hours to act on the loss of their 3 youths.

8 months after Toba Falode’s murder, we are still waiting on the Nigerian government to give us any kind of reaction on the loss of a young life-Toba Falode in Dubai.

Even after submitting every evidence, our protest, police reports corroborating the fact that my son was murdered, we still have gotten no response at all from the Nigerian government.

Take a queue from Israel.

And the Nigerian Government for once should start acting like a big country with so much might and power that it is in the continent and indeed in the world and go after Dubai for justice for every young soul and every Nigerian life that has been cut short in Dubai.

We send our sympathy and condolences to DSP Alamieyeseigha.

The family and friends of their son, we empathise with them because we have been through and are still going through it and it is nothing we wish for any parent which was our concern from the start.

This is one death too many. May it not happen again.

I need facts.
Facts will come. But I will like to add that Keshi basically rode on LUCK all through the period he handled the Eagles. SE excelled at SA because of the individual brilliance of some players (Mba, Emenike Et al). His lack of tactical dept was exposed during the Confed Cup and we all can clearly see what happened at the World Cup. He selected his team poorly for the World Cup. I really don't want to say many negative things about him because I believe he did the best that he could. He is good but not good enough for Nigeria. We deserve better.
