Education / Fg Donates 104 Buses To Aid Students’ Mobility by ayex0001: 4:17pm On Apr 11, 2011
To aid the mobility of students in all the unity schools in the country, the Federal Government has donated 104 Toyota buses to the 104 Federal Unity Colleges (FUCs). Donating the buses to principals of the schools in Abuja, President Goodluck Jonathan urged them to make proper use of the buses.
Represented by the Minister of State for Education, Mr Kenneth Gbagi, Jonathan said the infrastructural development to revamp the schools was ongoing. The president said transportation became a major challenge in the FUCs with the restoration of the junior secondary component.

He said some of the schools hired commercial vehicles to convey their students out for important functions and that some even had to stop taking their students out for lack of functional vehicles, thereby hindering their interaction with other schools.

“I strongly believe that the purchase of these ‘2010 ETF Intervention’ buses will ameliorate the transportation problem of both the staff and students in the FUCs and enable the students to actively participate in extra-curricular activities,’’ he said.

“To ensure that the FUCs emerge as true models of what ideal secondary schools should be in Nigeria, all aspects of these colleges, ranging from the infrastructural facilities, implementation of the curriculum, completion of syllabus, management style to capability of the principles are currently under review,’’ he said.

Education / Jamb’s Test Run Of Biometric For Utme Successful, Says Registrar by ayex0001: 12:38am On Feb 20, 2011
Determined to put in place an error-free biometric capturing system for 2011 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has successfully carried out a pilot scheme aimed at test-running its validity and reliability.

Speaking shortly after the launch of the pilot scheme, JAMB Registrar, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, advised candidates for the 2011 UTME examination to appreciate their thumbs and not to do anything that can disrupt their thumbs from being captured.

He said that thumb-printing done during registration would be repeated at all examination centres otherwise they would not be admitted for the examination.

According to a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer, Timothy Oyedeji, Ojerinde said that the Biometric Capturing System has been designed to separate the candidates on the basis of centres. Hence, if a candidate is not registered in a particular centre, he or she can only be captured against that centre and nowhere else.
Education / An Open Letter To The Vice Chancellor, Kano University Of Science And Technology by ayex0001: 12:29am On Feb 20, 2011
Sir: I am very disturbed, even after our earlier meeting in your office, as a guardian, about my son’s admission and the refusal of the university authorities to register him. That is why I choose public fora to reach you.

The fact is that the Kano University of Science and Technology has offered admission to so many people in Kano and beyond and refused them registration. In a letter dated Monday 6th Safar, 1432 equivalent to January 10, 2011, my son and other sons and daughters of Kano were offered admission to read their first degree in KUST. The admission, according to the said letter, ‘is to enable them make all necessary documentations at their Faculty and Department as JAMB Admission Letter would be provided to them later’. They were also instructed in the said letter to sign an undertaking with their Department that they will be of good behaviour throughout the period of their studies in the university. The last paragraph in the said letter advised thus: they are ‘strongly advised to remedy their Ordinary Level credit deficiency (if any) within four (4) Semesters’. However, I was baffled when my son returned later in the day to tell me that the university refused to register him and other students who share similar problems. However, despite this paragraph, boldly written in the admission letter, my son and others like him were refused registration by the KUST authorities, because, according to them they have deficiency in their Ordinary Level.

I find the decision of the university authorities so inappropriate. I understand that the university has the right to register or refuse to register any student who fails to meet the standard and criteria set by the university, in accordance with laws and regulations guiding the establishment of the university, but I find it very confusing, after writing boldly that the university authorities have given students four (4) semesters to remedy their deficiency to refuse to register some students.

This act smacks of double standard from the university authority. I want to believe also that this is an outright violation of the University’s Senate resolution, which agreed that the students with deficiency to be registered. If the KUST refused to abide by the resolution of the University’s Senate, that call to question the reputation of KUST authorities.

I think, in my own shallow understanding, the university should have, in writing, as they earlier stated in the admission letter offered these students, that the university authorities, after another Senate resolution, have withdrawn their earlier decision.
Education / Lagos Students Battle For Honours by ayex0001: 12:19am On Feb 20, 2011
Students of public and private primary and secondary schools in Lagos, yesterday, competed at the finals of the Brighter Rewarding Future Quiz Competition organised by the state’s Ministry of Education.

The annual competition made its debut last year, and this year’s edition had over 1,000 schools participating. “This year, a total of 1,411 schools, made up of 645 public primary and 207 private primary, 246 public junior and 23 private junior, as well as 252 public senior and 38 private senior secondary schools registered for the competition,” said Omolara Erogbogbo, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, in her welcome address.

The winners

The competition had three categories: Primary School, Junior Secondary School and Senior Secondary School categories. Questions were asked in five different subjects: English Language, Mathematics, Health Science, Social Studies and Current Affairs for the Primary and Junior Secondary School categories. In the Primary School category, Oluwalogbon Primary School, Ketu, emerged winner, earning 75 points. Taking second place was Penny International School, Aguda, with 70 points; while Jubril Martins Memorial Primary School came third.

The Junior Secondary School category was a keenly contested one as Eko Akete Junior Secondary School, Lagos Island, and Vetland Junior Secondary School, Ifako, initially had a tie earning 55 points each. They had to proceed to another round until Eko Akete Junior Secondary School emerged winner, Vetland Junior Secondary School took second place, while Methodist Junior High School, Badagry, took third place. In the Senior Secondary School category, Penny International College, Aguda, took first position; Ansar-ud-deen Comprehensive High School, Okota, took second position; while Igando Community Senior High School took the third position.

Raised standards

In last year’s edition, the Primary category was won by Dr Soyemi Memorial School, Festac Town. Reagan Memorial Secondary School, Yaba, came first in the Junior Secondary School category, while Adeola Memorial College won in the Senior Secondary school category. The competition provided an opportunity for students and teachers from public and private schools to compete fairly and develop a relationship among themselves. Moderator of the competition, Babs Olatunde, noted that the standards being exhibited by the public schools in the competition and in previous ones were exemplary. “Quality education is back in Lagos and I feel very happy to be a part of all these,” he said.

Sarah Sosan, the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, who was present at the event, congratulated all the students who participated in the event and charged them to be disciplined and avoid negative tendencies. She also highlighted some of the objectives of the competition. “The BRF competition was introduced last year as part of programmes embarked upon by Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola administration to create a nexus of interpersonal relationship among students in the state,” she said. “The competition is being organised, alongside others, by the Ministry of Education to encourage students to develop quick thinking, promote healthy rivalry, confidence building, for brighter and rewarding future.”

Speaking on the contributions to educational development in the state, Mrs Sosan said the quiz competition has “helped to improve academic standards in Lagos State with participants at various stages competing rigorously to get to this final stage.”
Education / Ambrose Alli University Shut Indefinitely Over Students’ Protest by ayex0001: 12:09am On Feb 20, 2011
Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma was yesterday shut indefinitely by authorities of the school following violent protest by the students which entered its second day.

The protest by the students paralysed all form of commercial activities within the Edo state government owned institution. Banks, business premises, schools and other commercial ventures were forced to close down, just as motorists had to carry green leaves on their vehicles as sign of solidarity with the students.

It was gathered that the students had on Monday prevented workers from going to their duty posts as a result of lack of potable water at the institution following the breakdown of the dam which supplies water to the University. The dam was constructed via funds donated from the European Union (EU).

The university authority hurriedly reacted by dissolving the Student Union Government (SUG) executive council and arrested its President, Itote Damisa, who was allegedly released shortly after. Prior to his release , the students got infuriated and embarked on a violent protest which led to destruction of property on the campus, just as the students allegedly placed a mock coffin at the campus’s security office. The police had a hectic time controlling the protest as a result of the massive number of protesting students, as several bonfire posts were made within the Ekpoma town by the angry students who reportedly pulled down some structures at the market square.

Apart from the initial grievances over lack of water supply to the campus, the students are also protesting the high school fees being charged by the authorities of the higher institution. The sacked student union earlier in the week ordered the students to pay half of the newly increased fees announced by the school authority, lamenting the 250 per cent increase .

Responding to the crisis, the management of the school argued that the students haven’t paid the school fees for the last session, and therefore it is irresponsible of them to complain about the new fees. The Vice Chancellor of the University, Sam Uniumikogbo however confirmed the closure by the management, saying that it was done to prevent other people from hijacking the protest. “We want to prevent a situation whereby hoodlums would join them and loot,” he said.
