Rivers LGA elections: “Life Is Dying Out… Don’t Let It Happen In Your Time” Pat Utomi Advice Fubara Renowned political economist and Labour Party chieftain, Pat Utomi, has raised an alarm over the conduct of Nigeria Police operatives in Rivers State, accusing the police of serving as “uniformed thugs of those in power.” In a social media post following his visit to Port Harcourt, Utomi expressed concern over the atmosphere in Rivers. Utomi described his return to the city as a moment that confirmed “forebodings long feared.” According to him, the forces aligned with Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, have created an environment where the people feel both stressed and strangely unbothered, despite what he called “the smell of coming anarchy” hanging in the air. “Wike and Fubara forces line up, the people felt stressed but strangely unperturbed; the smell of coming anarchy in the air mixed with the rains that came down sporadically, and the elders spoke softly about being captured and held hostage,” he wrote on X. Utomi’s critique extended to the judiciary, which he accused of having “no shame” in their potential complicity in the erosion of democracy. He warned that the judiciary might ultimately be blamed for what he sees as the decline of Nigerian governance. He also lamented that some government officials appeared indifferent to the growing instability, likening their behaviour to “Nero fiddling as Rome burnt.” Click On Below Link To Read Full Details https://leadnaija.com/rivers-lga-elections-life-is-dying-out-dont-let-it-happen-in-your-time-pat-utomi-advice-fubara/ |

#FearlessInOctober: With Or Without Me Protest Will Go On- Sowore Vow Former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore on Monday said the forthcoming #FearlessInOctober protest scheduled for October 1, will go on with or without him. Sowore, who is also the convener of the #RevolutionNow disclosed this during an interview on News Central TV on Monday. He stressed that the protests will not stop until the government addresses the demands of the protesters. He said: “And I want to make it clear here whether I participate or not and I am addressing our security people, it is going to happen. Just like the one in August, I was not here and it happened. “Even in 2019, the protest that I was arrested for – #RevolutionNow – happened even though I was arrested two days before the protest. So nobody can stop it. “I only know that it will start on October 1, I don’t know when it will end. Nigerians are tired of suffering. Did you know that in 2023 in France, French workers protested for six months non-stop? So why the complaint about the two months (the gap between #EndBadGovernance and #FearlessInOctober protests) when there is still hunger, starvation and corruption? “People are even complaining that we should not announce the date, that it should happen spontaneously.” The Sahara Reporters publisher urged anyone who wish to begin the protests before the planned October 1 date to do so. “And we said to anybody who feels that he is cheated or feels the burden of bad governance, they can’t buy gasoline, they can’t pay their band A or whichever band they put for electricity, they can’t pay school fees, and they feel strangled by the government, either by economic policies or political policies. “If you feel any of these, you are at liberty to start whenever you want. But as an organisation that I am part of, this is how we always protest since I have been engaging in civil advocacy to bring about social change. “I have never been engaged in a protest that is not peaceful. When a protest is announced and people are ready to march, it is already known that it is peaceful.” The activist rhetorically asked if the government would let the citizens to express themselves freely. “You should ask government; it is the police that kill people. The protesters did not kill themselves. It is the police,” Sowore added. BREAKING: FG Through VREG Set To Stop Smuggling Of Vehicles in Nigeria The Federal Government is set to end the smuggling of vehicles into the country, as it operationalises the National Vehicle Registry Policy, VREG. VREG integrates vehicles’ data across several agencies, including the Nigeria Customs Service, Vehicles Inspection Offices, the Police National Central vehicles data and that of the Federal Road safety Corps’s data base. Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, told participants at the VREG Zonal Sensitisation campaign in Abuja, yesterday, that the initiative would curb customs duty evasion by vehicles importers. He said: “The Federal Ministry of Finance is saddled with the responsibility of managing the nation’s finances and revenue streams. “In the midst of dwindling revenue orchestrated by falling oil prices and mono-economy further worsened by revenue leakages from unplugged loopholes such as customs duty payment evasion, it became imperative that government provided effective responses to these issues. “Furthermore, the absence of a dynamic and centralised platform for national vehicular information, despite Nigeria being the largest importer of vehicles in Africa with an additional 15 million vehicles operational in the country. “This huge vacuum had sustained the menaces of customs duty evasion, paucity of data for vehicular policy formulation, nationwide vehicle administration for revenue leakages, vehicle theft and vehicle-related crimes, challenges in road traffic regulation enforcement, limited access to credit facilities and ineffective vehicle insurance coverage and monitoring and evaluation. “It is worthy to note that since the emergence of VREG in 2021, several benefits of the registry have been achieved amongst which include, utilisation as a tool to mitigate the evasion of customs duty administration.
