"Rita, you must be very stupid!"
The voice was so loud and clear that Rita didn't know if it was her head or someone was in her apartment, she took one cautious step backwards in fear, what if there was a burglar was in.
"Hellooo..." she called and her voice echoed back to her. So it was confirmed, she was alone in the apartment.
"Rita I said you are stupid."
"Who is talking?"
"Me, your inner goddess."
"I don't have time for this okay." Rita replied emphatically.
"You could have said 'hi' instead of scurrying off like a coward and leaving poor Tunde in the dark."
"I don't have time for this plus Mike didn't even recognize me so why..."
"Don't be silly, you could have walked up to him and introduced yourself."
"Maybe he wasn't the one, I must have mis-taken him for someone else." Rita's inner goddess hissed, she wished Rita would be bolder when it came to boy matters. Suddenly Rita looked round the living room, 'I am going crazy!' she said and her inner goddess rolled her eyes.
"I'm here talking to myself like a mad woman, what if someone saw me?" she asked herself.
"Nobody is here!" her inner goddess declared and Rita laughed, the things Mike did to her.
"I have to move on." She said, emphatically, to herself as she walked to her bedroom to change her clothes.

STORY FINALE

Tomiwa was surprised when the guy bent to cut the rope used to tie his hands while the other presented him with a plate of food. Now his surprise heightened, a while, most likely, hours ago, these guys were doing everything to kill him without actually putting a knife to his throat a pulling a bullet to his head and now, they are giving him food? Maybe the food was poisoned, well that was a easier way to die, less painful than a bullet or maybe it wasn’t, for now he was hungry so he would eat, poison or no poison.

“Oga Ade, chop fast fast, we go reach those your oga side tomorrow morning.” Tomiwa smiled inwardly so they finally believed him but that still didn’t mean they wouldn’t or couldn’t kill him if they so wished. After eating, Tomiwa was allowed to sleep and regain a fraction of his strength then he led the two guys to Shanawole’s house in the early hours of the next day. chief had instructed them to let him go which they did but they took his phones; the android and a smaller one, his wallet with the little cash in it, his driver’s license was broken right there but they were kind enough to let him have his National ID card, he couldn’t complain na, which human in his or her right mind would when you were just seconds away from death, at least they gave him his life, for all he cared, they could break the ID too, he didn’t care, he just wanted them to drive off so the trekking could begin before day break. He decided to go a friend’s place first to sleep before calling his wife and going home.

***

Hannah was full of joy as she saw Tomiwa walk into the house, she ran to hug him with tears running down her cheeks, the children also came to welcome their father, it was a sober moment for the family of four, they’d gone through a lot lately. Hannah moved swiftly to clean Tomiwa’s wounds, there were cuts on his lips and face, he complained of body ache and there were bruises on his back. She treated him to a delicious meal, prepared a warm bath for him and let him sleep. The rest of the day went by without incident, Tomiwa slept with both eyes closed for the first time in a long time but he was still suffering from a mild case of paranoia. Tomiwa’s reassurance that all was well came when detectives Wale and Segun came visiting the next day and promised to take up the case and make sure the culprits were punished.
Little by little, Hannah moved their things out of the room to the one bedroom mini flat they’d rented with part of Tomiwa’s savings and monetary assistance from her father. The family was recovering from the ordeal and they worked hand in hand to stabilize Tomiwa. It is needless to say that Tomiwa has learnt that all that glitters is not gold.

EPILOGUE

TOMIWA

He walked out of the house and looked up at the sky, it was a lovely day that God had made and for the first time in a while, he was glad and could freely rejoice in it. He was vindicated at long last, he could now walk on the street without looking over his shoulder, indeed, he felt super human, to his kids, he was a hero, to the community and the government, he was a good no, patriotic citizen. Wait, he laughed to himself, he was a beneficiary of corruption, the same corruption he always complained about; he could have serve a jail term but officer Suleman had pushed some buttons and pulled some strings and he walked out of the police station a free man. He’d declined witnessing against Scorpion and his gang in court; he was content with the role he’d played thus far. He was glad to be back with his family, religiously minding his keke business and being very cautious with his dealings lest there be a recurrence. He smiled again and got into his tricycle, started the engine with his family seated at the back, he rode out to start the business of the day.

HANNAH

Her father had gotten her a ‘container’ shop, she was really glad that baba had changed his attitude towards her, she went about her business with fulfilment but she still had her mind on expansion but she didn’t despise her humble beginning. The past few months had been a transition for her family, one which she drifted through like a dream.

She sat on the bench in front of her shop and exchanged pleasantries with her neighbours. It felt good to live normally again. The weeks when Tomiwa had been working with the police had been terrifying, she feared for the safety of her family but now that was all over. She was glad to have Tomiwa back to his normal self, her dad not treated her like his child and her big sister, Ruth, now associated with her like a sibling.
‘God bless my family’ she muttered to herself, life was indeed a journey of free will in that one could do as he/she pleased or do the will of the creator.

THE END.

“But me I believe the guy o, you know say person like am go just be like recruit wey them go dey use con find small change for am, hin go happy.”
“That one no too consine me, my hand just dey scratch to kill person.”
“Guy, nawa for you o, na so so violence you dey like.”
“See you, na the work wey we do do n aim be this, so na you gat to man up, I see as you dey look when I clear that Tomiwa guy.”
“Buh you no suppose finish am like that, you just waste the innocent guy for nothing.”
“Guy, look, a man gat to do what he gat to do, if chief come now con talk say make we kill am nko, shey you go open eye for am? So abeg no dey open eye dey strong bone for me.” He concluded and walked away. That was the conversation between the two men that had kidnapped Tomiwa.

Meanwhile, Tomiwa still lay in the room where he’d been kept, slipping in and out of consciousness with his hands still tied. He wished for death, he was tired, he just couldn’t muster enough strength to hope, he just lay, wishing death would stop cat walking and hurry to take him in his arms. At a point, he thought he was dead; everywhere had been so bright and white, he’d seen his family smiling at him with outstretched arms, well they were not the family he knew, these ones were long dead but somehow he’d recognised them. He’d taken two steps forward to meet them but was held back by a force, so strong that he wanted to look at what it was but ‘the family’ beckoned on him, they kept urging him to come forward, they looked so peaceful. Alas! His curiosity had the upper hand and he looked back just like Lot’s wife had done only, that he didn’t turn to a pillar of salt, and he saw, first, his children then Hannah and his mother looking at him but somehow they couldn’t see him. His heart was torn between the two families, he really wanted to join ‘the family’ because they seemed and looked really happy and at peace and yet he wanted to be with his wife and children. His dilemma was put on hold when the ground started shaking and the distance between him and both families increased rapidly, earthquake ke! He thought but stood rooted to a spot.

In real life, there was no earthquake, one of the kidnapperswas only trying to wake Tomiwa.
“Abi him don die true true?” the other asked with a confused look.
“I no too sure again o.”
“Abeg, no kobalise my career, shake am wella, no be him chest they move so, him go still they breathe.”
“Go carry water come abeg, I no dey ready for chief wahala.” And the other guy rushed the get the water, from the look of their faces, one could easily deduce that they were afraid.
“He don wake jare.” One of them said as Tomiwa stirred but that didn’t stop them from pouring the the bowl of cold water on Tomiwa’s head and he became fully awake. He looked round and wondered why the environment had suddenly changed, why he wasn’t dead already, he wasn’t ready for any kind of torture but he resigned to fate when he saw one of the guys produce a knife from his pocket.

The fat chief appeared to be thinking about what Tomiwa had just said then he stood.
“Leave him for now and come back in the evening, by then, if he still doesn’t talk, I’ll tell you what to do.” He said and left the room.
“My hand still dey scratch me to blow you.” Tomiwa’s attacker said and gave him one final blow in the stomach. He slumped to the ground and was grateful for the warm embrace of the cold concrete floor as his face touched it. This is the end- he thought to himself and closed his eyes, giving up on everything, hope was useless at this point, he close his eyes one final time and said goodbye to consciousness.

***
Hannah was in a frenzy, she was disoriented, her thoughts were scattered, her husband had been kidnapped while she was snoring, if only she’d been there, she would have fought them off. She’d hung up on iya Lati when she started asking too many questions, she checked the time on the wall clock, just a few minutes to seven AM but it was still too early to go to officer Suleman, strangely, her father had shown concern about her situation and she was grateful for that.

“Hannah, o ba se suuru, Olorun a wa pelu Tomiwa, se suuru omo mi, baba Agbabiaka o ti le ji bayii, ni suuru omo mi, ti iwo ba n se bayii, kilo fe ki awon omo e wa se ehn, jo ni suuru (Hannah, be patient, God will be with Tomiwa, baba Agbabiaka won’t be awake by now, be patient my child, if you’re acting this way, what do you want you children to do, please be patient.)” iya Hannah said since Hannah had been pacing up and down the living room, Hannah eyed her mother for a while then looked away, just then, Yejide and Korede walked in fully dressed in their school uniforms, they knew something was wrong because first, their mum had received a call, then second, screamed and had been restless since then.

“Maami… (My mother)” Yejide said referring to her grandmother
“… awa ti fe ma lo o, owo moto nko? (We’re about to leave, where is our transport fare?)” she asked.
“Lo wo lori bedside niyara mi (it’s on the bedside table in my room)” iya Hannah replied and Yejide disappeared then came back holding a five hundred naira note, thanked her grandmother and left for school with her brother.
“Maami, daddy (officer Suleman) would be awake by now, he’s not a late sleeper, plese let me go and talk to him.” Hannah said and her mother nodded her agreement, not that she could do otherwise since Hannah was already by the door.
Hannah walked quickly to ‘daddy’s’ hose, certain that he’d be awake and she was right, she met walking round his house as he usually did, inspecting the house in case any of his tenants had done any damage, so typical of a landlord who lived in the same compound with his tenants.

“Daddy, e kaaro sir (Good morning sir)” Hannah greeted on her knees.
“Hannah, my dear, stand up, good morning, how are you?”
“I’m not fine sir, I received a call from my neighbour informing me that two guys came to beat up my husband and they even took him away, daddy what are you boys doing, shebi they are supposed to be protecting him, how come they opened their eyes and didn’t do anything when he was attacked to the extent that he was kidnapped ehn, I am tired o, are you sure these boys are working at all abi is it because I don’t have money ehn, they…”
“HA-NNAH! Be patient, my boys are aware of everything, they even called to inform me a while ago, I reacted the same way but this is a blessing in disguise, at least this would lead them to the culprits.” Hannah clapped her hands thrice and laughed a bitter laugh.
“Ehehn, so my husband should be suffering because some useless detectives don’t know their jobs? Okay, thank you daddy, tell them to rescue my husband, I am not doing again, I’m no longer interested in their services, God will fight for us.” Hannah said and walked out of the house while officer Suleman shook his head in pity.
“Hannah sha, she’s never patient, I’m certain she’ll come back.”

Just then, the man spoke.

“Tomiwa, abi is that not your name? (Tomiwa nodded) I don’t need too much from you, I just need you to tell me who sent you, I understand that you’re just a mere driver and I’m sure nobody will notice that you’re gone so it will be in your best interest to cooperate with my boys so who sent you and those guys that came to my house, don’t worry, I’ll compensate you and you can even leave them and work for me, I’ll pay double of whatever they pay.” ‘wait, did he just say ‘sent me’?’ Tomiwa asked himself. This must be a practical joke or maybe they’d mistaken him for someone else, what kind of wahala is this now, he thought.
“Sir, I don’t understand what you’re talking about.” That was a terrible reply Tomiwa gave and he only realised that when two slaps landed on his face in quick succession and he lost his balance but was roughly dragged up by the guy behind him.
“You no understand yet you dey carry knife waka, abi normal human being go dey keep knife for pocket ni.” The first guy said.
“Tomiwa, don’t play dumb, just help us to help you, were you not the one that drove those touts that came to attack me two months ago? Were you not the one that drove those idiots that came to molest a whole me Chief Aregbeyo? Answer me now! Maybe you have forgotten because I’m sure you went on many more missions like that.” The pot-bellied man boomed. Hot tears ran down Tomiwa’s face, this was a typical and practical definition of what the Yoruba’s call AKOBA (implication).

“Sir, I don’t know anything about that sir, I am just a keke rider, I just drive those people once in a while, I don’t even know what they do, I don’t know who they work for, I swear sir, I swear to God sir, if I knew anything, I’d have told you sir, I swear to Almighty God sir, I don’t know who sent them sir, please spare me for…” Tomiwa was saying before blow landed in the pit of his stomach mid-sentence, he bent double unable to clutch his stomach, the guy behind hi tightened his grip and held him in place for the second blow leaving no room for recovery. Tears flowed freely, the things greed had caused Tomiwa, I as the observer felt sorry for Tomiwa when I saw the attacker raise his hands for a third blow and was only grateful for the timely intervention of the fat man when he raised his hand to signal an end to that session of torture.

“Sir, please sir, I swear sir, plea…”
“Just shut up jare…” the attacker shouted. “… I tell you say this guy no go talk, I tell you now we no go fit leave am since he don see our face…” Tomiwa screamed, he remembered his pastor’s favorite phrase when it was prayer time -‘a closed mouth is a closed destiny’- so he raised is plea, even if he was going to die, at least he tried to beg his way to life.
“Please sir, I don’t know anything, I don’t know anybody, please sir, I swear I won’t talk, I can lead you to those I drive, sir you can get your information there, please sir, I swear sir, I promise sir, I will do anything you want, please spare my life…” Tomiwa pleaded amid tears and sobs.

CONTINUATION...

He’d been alone in the room, preparing to go out when he heard a gentle knock on the door, he thought it was a neighbour but still armed himself with his new best friend, the pocket knife he’d just purchased as a self-defence tool. He hadn’t flicked the knife open because he thought he wouldn’t be needing it but he still approached the door cautiously.

“Who is there?” he asked as the knock sounded again.
“It is me.”
“You who?”
“Ahahn, baba Yejide, yo no know my voice again? Na me iya Lati.” Tomiwa rolled his eyes and hissed, what did she want, it would be worse if he ignored her, he was sure she wouldn’t go away and that would draw so much attention, why was she so nosey, she most likely wanted to question him on the whereabouts of his wife and children since school was still in session. He put the knife back in his pocket and unlocked the door. The blow that followed his opening the door sent him reeling backwards, it was the typed that blinded you immediately, he didn’t even have enough time to recover before he felt a hard kick in his stomach, the pain was raw and uncensored, he clutched his stomach as though to stop the pain from spreading but his hands were wrenched away and bound by a rope, then he was blindfolded and dragged out of the house; iya Lati had been by the door all the while, observing in horror but not daring to make a move as a knife was at her throat. When the ordeal was over, she was shoved aside and she scrambled to her feet immediately after they left, it was short and noiseless, if iya Lati had not been unfortunate to be outside at the time they came, nobody in the house might have noticed Tomiwa’s disappearance, well not like they’d take up any action since that had been his routine for quite a while.

“Eh, what is happening, baba Yejide is a gentle and kind man, na who come do him this kain thing? Abi they don do mistake ni?” iya Lati said to her feet as she went back to her room, her husband, being a night watchman, was not at home and she couldn’t go to anybody’s room as it was still quite early, she locked her door and windows out of fear then decided to call ‘iya Yejide’ to inform her.

***

“Wake up jare.” The man shouted followed by a kick and Tomiwa stirred, a hard slap landed on his face; he closed his eyes briefly from the pain but opened immediately to look at his attacker. The man was heavily built, his biceps were really intimidating but he wasn’t the only one in the room, there was a fat, pot-bellied man sitting on a wooden chair in front of him. Tomiwa looked at both faces but there was no familiar one, this weren’t Scorpion’s boys, something was terribly wrong, if Scorpion wanted to kidnap him, why didn’t he come himself instead of sending unfamiliar faces and killing him with curiosity.
“Oga Ade! You don wake?” a voice sounded from behind him, he hadn’t noticed that one before, he’d been too weak to turn his neck but now, he knew better than to look. His hands were still tied to his back but his legs were free. He was ordered to stand but realising he couldn’t balance himself, the guy behind him dragged him up, he’d lost track of time but he guessed it was day break already.
“Young ma, you either cooperate with us and live or you do strong head and die.” The first guy said. Tomiwa swallowed hard, this was the end of the line for him, it would take a miracle to save him now. He looked straight at the over-fed, pot-bellied man in an expensive lace attire, maybe he was Scorpion’s boss but he was just an insignificant driver, why would the boss bother with him? He thought.

CONTINUATION...

Hannah was panicky, what if things didn’t work out as planned, what if somebody was careless and made a mistake that would blow up the whole thing, what if Tomiwa found out and got angry with her, worse still, what if he refused her help and ordered her to stop, she smacked herself mentally, she had to be optimistic, she couldn’t let her fear get the better of her at this stage. It had been two days since Tomiwa was discharged from the hospital, the children had moved in with her parents, she’d briefed her mother on the situation and had even talked to her dad’s best friend and long-time neighbour, Mr Agbabiaka popularly known as officer Suleman, a now retired police officer. He’d promised to help since he still had ‘trusted links’ (in his words) in the police force. Hannah was a bit sceptical at the beginning, she wasn’t sure if what she was doing was right or endangering her family the more, she’d even disobeyed Tomiwa when he told her to move in with her parents because she wasn’t ready to give up on him just yet, at least, marriage meant she and Tomiwa were one and the same so whatever happened to him invariably happened to her, but daddy (as she usually called officer Suleman) had advised that she obey her husband and further assured her that everything would work out fine.

“Hannah.” She heard her name and sat upright, it was daddy flanked by two younger men, one looked about her age and the other looked younger, if it wasn’t for officer Suleman’s assurance, she would have changed her mind and walked away right there and then, one look at the officers (because she was sure they are) and her countenance fell, she had next to nothing to offer them and she knew they’d jump at the next big offer if it came from the other side.

“These are my boys…” daddy said smiling, “… I trained these two and I trust them the most at the station, they are detectives Wale and Segun.” He said pointing at them respectively. After formalities, Hannah explained all she knew and put her in words; after the short meeting, ninety percent of Hannah’s fear had been dispelled, the rest they say is history.

***

Tomiwa continued to live like a fugitive for the succeeding two weeks after he was discharged, he left home really early before day break and only returned under the cover of darkness. One fateful evening, the unexpected happened, Tomiwa could swear he never anticipated such a move but as I said, it was a ‘FATEFUL’ evening.

CONTINUATION...

When Hannah had cried enough, she disengaged from the embrace, she never allowed herself to be drowned in self-pity and she wouldn’t start now, she is a fighter, sometimes, she could feel down but she always bounced back. She stood and walked the length of the bed, for Tomiwa to talk about death, it meant the situation was really serious and since he wasn’t ready to talk to her, she had the perfect idea of who he could talk to.

“Tomiwa…” she began “… if you’re so afraid to talk to me, why don’t you talk to the police, Baba has some olopa (police) friends, they can handle this case for us and I promise you that all will be well.” Tomiwa jerked upright on the bed, he stared wide eyed at Hannah, she was definitely out of her mind for even thinking of the police and most likely she’d lost her mind and brain for even suggesting that, he eyed her and smiled, she loved him, she was only watching out for him so he couldn’t blame her but this was beyond the police because a good number of them are affiliated with this deadly gang, talking to the police at this juncture would only mean he was signing his death certificate. He shook his head and Hannah looked at him with confused eyes.

“Tomiwa, talk now.” She pleaded.
“Hannah, you don’t understand, this is beyond the police, my life is at stake, most likely yours, those after me have even contacted the police, what I need to do now is to lie low for some time then hopefully God will see me through, I don’t…”
“Ah, oh God, Tomiwa you’re beginning to annoy me with this talk about life and death, you don’t have to be such a man every time now, I can help, just let me, baami (my father) can help too, Tomiwa just give me a chance, please.”
“Hannah, just obey me for once now, okay, you can help in any other way but please, not the police, and nobody must know that you’re my wife well that’s if they don’t already know be…”
“They, they, they, they this, they that, who is the ‘they’, just tell me who they are, please.” At this point Tomiwa had to give in to his wife’s persistence, he knew she’d continue pestering him until he told her the truth so he summarized the whole scenario to her. At the end of his tale, Hannah was teary eyed, she placed both hands on her head, she wasn’t going to condemn her husband, she was touched at the amount of love he had for her and the family in general, this was no time to tongue lash him, the situation needed urgent attention, she couldn’t blame him for his actions, she knew her nagging, sturbbornness and bad mouth were part of the factors that had driven him to this extreme, now she knew the gravity of what could befall them, her whole lineage could be wiped out in a matter of hours, she made up her mind to talk to her mother, she was determined to save her family with or without Tomiwa’s permission.
