Xano: points one and two are good. We should work on them. Points three and four are your sentiments. Don't play politics. Don't use your speech to wash the head of readers.
Lol. Our political orientation may not be the same but the bottomline should be about good governance for the betterment of Nigeria.

@Frodobee, one more reason to believe in what? If I may ask.

Its not new. Russia also spies on US. I doubt if it would cause any friction in their relationship. Spying is an eternal game. China also needs to be very alert because the West wants her to practice democracy and spies would do the underground work.

Atleast, we caught a BH spy yesterday. Naija is on the alert too. wink

PoliticsRe: Boko-Haram : Orange Seller Arrested With N600m by ayox2003:
First off, the SoE is a welcome development. Although some people believe its long overdue but I prefer half a bread than none. Even the US didn't expect a SoE, that's why John Kerry said that the troops should be very careful with human lives...like they really care. Huh?

Second, we say our troops are fighting the dreaded Boko Harm, yet their sponsors - those Borno Senators caught red-handed - Senator Zanna and Ali are still walking free around town like a philanthropist. If the IG is soft of them probably because he's also from the north, let the President order the Head of the Military to interrogate them. I can bet that after spending just 4hours in the military custody, they'd confess and name other sponsors of the group. This orange seller might just be a channel and not a backbone sponsor. Once access to money is blocked, gross weakness would affect their logistics. But the president turned a blind eye on those senators because they were not linked to Buhari. Politics!

Third, nigerians are just too emotional about national issues. Instead of taking time to think about the presidents declaration, all we see here is "Kill them all", "those northerns should be destroyed", "they should be gunned down" and other unnecessary statements. We need to quit swimming in the pool of emotion. Let's towel-dry our instant approval and reactions, then sit on the couch of logical reasoning. When someone makes a statement about our country, either good or bad, it doesn't hurt if we take sometime to think about what's been said instead of swallowing it all up hook, line and sinker. The declaration of SoE should not be an end but a means. A means to create the platform for a sovereign national conference. While the military has risen up to save the nation by guns, the civilians (u and I) must also use dialogue as a weapon. We must also press it on GEJ that he calls for a national conference to save the nation by dialogue. Let the northern PDPs come and make their grievances known and each tribe's representative should speak the truth about the state of the nation. Possibly all those northern PDP elites who have been silent about BH would talk, forgive and re-structure their party and the zoning controversy that magnified the problem.

Fourth, those who supports PDP/GEJ should call for federalism. If truly u want crises to stop, then tell the president that he has the power to change things for good in PDP. If he could use such power to re-structure the party to his taste, biting very hard on Amaechi's butts, then such power should be channelled to add federalism into PDP's ideology. That each state be responsible for its development, revenue and security. Waiting for monthly allocation makes these governors less concerned because whether or not they perform, money comes from Abuja. Buhari's CPC stands on federalism. It would solve these problems because a Lagosian would be less concerned about what happens in Borno and the FG would not be too worried about it.

Fifth, the problem of BH was caused by failure of northern military leaders. They spent years in power, yet they didn't ensure that their folks be educated. Unemployment, poverty and illiteracy is very rife in the north. We should learn from this: ethnicity doesn't guarantee competence. Don't choose leaders because they are from ur tribe. Vote for a candidate that has a proven track record. The north is unstable today, who knows what would be of the south tomorrow if we don't have a good leader. Aap!

django1: @ayox2003^^^ Aribisala is arguably one of the most intelligent posters on NL, but he's been AWOL on NL for a while, am happy he made an appearance on this thread!
Honestly, his points are flawless. Come-to-think-of-it, if civilisation started in Egypt- which is now africa- before the birth of Christ, then its very senseless to say the "Father of African Literature" died in 2013. Makes african literature assume a toddler stage. Even Igbo literature has been way before the birth of Achebe but the fact that we africans are poor record keepers made our past heroes and giant disappear into oblivion.

For a thing, Achebe did excellently well in his chosen field but saying he's the Father of those who passed his culture to him makes it very watery. Plus, because it was written in a whitemans language makes it "un-african".

Achebe is definitely the most popular writer but Father? Shove it.

PoliticsRe: Wole Soyinka's Interview About Chinua Achebe by ayox2003: 7:28pm On May 19, 2013
aribisala0: So many people have responded without understanding what they have read, what literature is or what Wole is saying
First of all what is literature?
Traditionally ,for Europeans,it would refer to the "written" word/language

NOT necessarily written for Africans
http://dlibrary.acu.edu.au/staffhome/siryan/academy/foundation/what_is_literature.htm
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_literature

I realise there are several sensible definitions but a working definition for me would have to go beyond "writing" and focus on "RECORDED" which may involve human memory, or other technology than writing otherwise we would be saying literature is closed to blind people or that audio forms are NOT literature and if we admit audio forms do we admit performances that are typical of Africans and their use of language involving no writing?
These issues have been debated elsewhere and responding without undersanding these issues is just folly

I think the primary quarrel which many modern writers have with designating Achebe "father" of Afrian literature is simple; namely that it reinforces the European prejudices that there was no literature before they "civilized" us .Also it confines any works previously Not done in European languages to the dustbin and sells the idea we did not record anything before Europeans civilized us and our young people lose curiousiy about their heritage and accept there was no African Literaure till Achebe came along.
We have had literature in Africa for millenia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kebra_Negast
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epic_of_Sundiata
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utendi_wa_Tambuka
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_of_the_Dead
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyramid_Texts

The stories of Kunkuru,Yemenibo,Anansi etc are ALL literature.

What about the Ifa Odus/Canon are they not literature even recognized as a Masterpice of Oral Humaniy

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masterpieces_of_the_Oral_and_Intangible_Heritage_of_Humanity
Does literature have to be written or can it be recorded and transmitted in other ways. Braille, audio recording, human memory and oral tradition. This question has been debated elsewhere. The context of Wole's argument as I understand it is "Africa has had literature for centuries just like Europeans and others" and so to designate anyone who is alive or even was alive in recent memory as Father is patronizing and wrong. The fact that white people did not know about our "literature" that it was written or not ,did not comply with their definition of literaure is irrelevant.

Let us take a number of forms drama and poetry. Did Africans have drama before Achebe or even before colonization? Does failure to record them in written or "European compliant" ways make them any less "literature" than Shakespeare etc.
Achebe's work is peppered with wonderful examples of ,in my view, literary forms, which clearly are ancient Igbo heritage that have clearly been transmitted over several generations. .So Achebe is not even the father of Igbo literature which has been around for centuries but a child of it how then can he or anyone be the Father of African literature. That is like calling anyone of recent memory father of African music. The objections raised to this title being given to anyone alive or recently dead is that it diminishes Africa because it says there was no Igbo literature before Achebe no other African language literature or tha literature MUST be written and preferably acknowledged and validated externaly. All humans even blind and deaf can access literature and have done for ever.

Genealogies, tribal stories and many more forms are and have been performed in many African societies for ever in complex ways that are uniquely "African" but in my view qualify ,too, as literature. Those who wish to call Achebe Father may try "Father of "WRITTEN ENGLISH" Nigerian literature but even that may be argued as he is not known for drama or other forms designed to be performed. We must not forget that the African is ,perhaps, drawn more o those forms that are performed rather than read as many masquerade ceremonies(Even among the Igbos ) show.I think there is a very grave misunderstanding of what literature is and I agree that this unseemly argument impugns Achebe's legacy.
This post is the best on here. You are very intelligent. Any de-tribalised nigerian would agree with you. Trust nigerians, ethno-emotional attachment prevails in ALL issues.

God bless you for this. I'm saving ur post.

PoliticsRe: Why Did Al Mustapha Hand Power To IBB Via Adulsalami Abubakar After Abacha Died. by ayox2003: 7:37am On May 18, 2013
thoth: Lets try to look at this more differently, lets assume that Al Mustapha was betrayed by Abubakar whom sold out to the requests of washington to hand over to a civillian regime with obasanjo as the prospective puppet. Lets assume that Babangida also wants Abacha dead and therefore naturaly joined clique and provided human assets and assistance in there numerous tries to assasinate Abacha. Lets also assume that Babangida's plan of assuming power(whether directly or by proxy) was bungled and shunned by Washington for a more smoother and favorable plan so Babangida did not get what he wants afterall . Lets assume that the clique and not necessary Babangida realized their objectives.

If i say that the same team that killed Yasser Arafat are the ones that killed Abacha would anyone believe me ?
Done and dusted. You have nailed it.

Well, Nairobi is cool. Go to the travel section, there is a thread on Nairobi by Gallivant. He should be able to help.

Having said that, it would be advisable that u take a visit to Nairobi. Spent coupla days there last year. A dollar equals 82shillings and u could get a very good hotel for as low as 3000shillings (Sagret Hotels and the likes..), approximately $37. Food is also very affordable. Nairobi has a central mall called Nakumatt where u can get all ur groceries, devices blah blah blah. Cool weather as at November. They have the fastest internet speed in Africa. Really cool place. For 7days, $800 would be enough for feeding, hotel bills and the safari if you're a very big spender without a partner.

Litwack said that to attract foreign investors, it was important that government also tackle the problems of market connectivity and infrastructural deficit.

“Investors with the potential to set up large scale operations and create jobs will be reluctant to do so if they cannot service a large market. Under these conditions, a number of Nigerian states have limited opportunities to attract significant investors,” he said.

He pointed out that for Nigeria’s federal system of government to work for development, there was need to hold government officials accountable, saying that until the public was aware of public expenditure, it would be difficult to hold public officers accountable.
The bolded makes a lot of sense. This time, I seem to agree with the World Bank. Let the government also come up with a database for every nigerian. The West shouldnt be throwing numbers at us when we have a NBS and others.

One_Naira: Human Development Index is what I use to classify whose develop and whose not. I do not look at GDP in regards to development. For example: Nigeria is the second or is it the third GDP in the entire Africa but yet it rank so low in HDI. What is the use of having so much money if the people are not enjoying it? superficial stuff like roads, malls, etc to me is a waste of money. Until the indigenous can claim they have plenty food that they waste away, roof over their head, good living standard, constant electricity, good water, literacy, etc then that's when the superficial stuff can come into play. That is one of the reason I cannot stand Nigerian governors and why I stand in awe in the praising Nigerians give them when they build all this superficial stuff and disregard the main thing that matters: HDI.
