The World Health Organization (WHO) has revealed how consumers of Nigeria’s most popular barbeque, Suya and Kilishi, are prone to cancer. Suya According to the report, a study recently showed connections between red meat and cancer. The WHO also asserted that making red meats cook at a very high temperature creates carcinogenic chemicals. About 50g of processed meat a day increases the chance of developing colorectal cancer by 18%. Processed meat are meats that“have been modified to increase its shelf-life or alter its taste – such as by smoking, curing or adding salt or preservatives”.The later part of the definition brings one to the mention of Suya, which is red meat that goes through severe heat and then seasoned with salt, pepper and groundnut powder. Kilishi is the dryer version of Suya. “For an individual, the risk of developing colorectal (bowel) cancer because of their consumption of processed meat remains small, but this risk increases with the amount of meat consumed,”Kurt Straif from the WHO said. Deaths resulting from the consumption of processed meats related to cancer are estimated at 34,000 yearly. A professor from the Cancer Research UK and the University of Oxford, Tim Key, said: “This decision doesn’t mean you need to stop eating any red and processed meat, but if you eat lots of it you may want to think about cutting down.” The Meat Advisory Panel added:“Eating a bacon bap every once in a while isn’t going to do much harm – having a healthy diet is all about moderation. Avoiding red meat in the diet is not a protective strategy against cancer. The focus should be alcohol, smoking and body weight.” lalasticlala do somthing................https://www.naij.com/618793-dangers-involved-consumption-suya-kilishi.html |
Governor Oluesegun Mimiko of Ondo state has nominated Olasinmi Akindele-Odunmbaku, the wife of a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, as a commissioner. Pastor Williams Kumuyi has commended President Muhammadu Buhari over the fight his administration has launched against corruption in the country. The general superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry characterized Buhari’s move as a step in the right direction when he spoke with journalists in Abia state on Sunday, October 25, Vanguard reports. The cleric also called for the support of the Nigerian leader noting that with the backing of the citizens, the funds embezzlement would soon be eliminated. Pastor Williams Kumuyi “I am a layman when it comes to politics. But from what we can see, I believe that the president is in the right direction and if we support him with our comments and in other ways, I believe that we will see corruption brought down very quickly.” Regarding the role of the church in the anti-graft war, Kumuyi said: “When we say the church, we are not just talking about buildings; we are talking of people who come to church and also go to offices. For the church to support the fight against corruption, preachers must teach our people to learn how to contribute positively to the progress of the country wherever they are. If you are a governor, commissioner, teacher, minister and among others; do your best for the country. Don’t think of what you can get out of the place that you are working, but how they can contribute to the place in order to support the efforts of the government.” Addressing the politicians, he recommended them to follow their promises and remember they are servants of the Nigerians who elected them. In a recent development some Nigerian clerics announced their plan to hold a national prayer for President Buhari and the incoming ministers. The prayer would aim at seeking God’s favour for the acting administration and its fight against corruption and security challenges. |

Nigerian rights chief: Prosecute political killers. Warri - Nigeria's human rights chief is demanding that the government prosecute those responsible for the killings of at least 97 people in election-related violence in southern Rivers State. The chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Chidi Odinkalu, said in a Twitter message that the assassins belong in jail and Nigeria should end impunity for political violence. Odinkalu chaired a commission of inquiry that in May published the names of 117 people it said should be prosecuted for crimes from killings to burning houses in the run-up to the March presidential and April governorship elections that brought Nigeria's first democratic change of government. A tribunal Saturday nullified the election won by Rivers State incumbent Gov. Nyesom Wike, raising more tension in the oil-rich state. http://m.news24.com/Nigeria/National |
Chief Nyesom Wike, who has been dethroned as the governor of Rivers state, will have to wait until Tuesday, October 27 before knowing his fate at the Supreme Court. According to The Nation, the court will decide if the election tribunal which nullified Wike’s election as the governor of Rivers state was right to have sat in Abuja after it emerged that the tribunal was one of those relocated to the federal capital over security fears as it could not continue with its proceedings in Port-Harcourt, the Rivers State capital. Following last Saturday’s cancellation of the election which ushered in the former education minister as the governor, on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Wike and the Independent National Electoral Commission (who were respondents in the petition by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate in the election, Dakuku Peterside) questioned the tribunal’s decision to relocate to Abuja. This objection was subsequently dismissed by the tribunal, arguing that it could sit outside the state where election was held to decide any dispute arising from such election on ground of insecurity. The tribunal’s decision was further upheld by the Court of Appeal, Abuja and a panel of the Supreme Court led by Justice John Fabiyi, which received the Appeal by Wike on October 16, heard and fixed judgement for Tuesday. Earlier today, report also reached us that in a rather fascinating turn of events, about ten House of Assembly members in Rivers state were sacked by the tribunal. Naij.com |

Contrary to media reports that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had been served with a petition against the former governor of Rivers state, Rotimi Amaechi, over allegations of corruption by Integrity Group, there are indications that the anti-graft commission has not received any formal complaint, New Telegraph reports. Rotimi Amaechi at the Senate screening According to the report, the EFCC had in line with the said petition written three letters dated August 13, two of which it said were addressed to the permanent secretary in the Rivers tate Ministry of Finance. On the contrary, New Telegraph quoted a source that chose to remain anonymous saying that he was not aware of any petition against Amaechi. He said:“To the best of my knowledge, I don’t know of any petition before us against him (Amaechi) to have necessitated an invitation for questioning as is consistent with our practice. If there is any – and I doubt – I’m not aware of such. “I promise keep you updated, whenever anything contrary to what I have just told you, happens.” When the distinguished senators asked the former Rivers governor during the his screening at the Senate session as a prospective minister in the president Mohammadu Buhari-led administration about the alleged indictment, Amaechi said that he was born to test his his right. The ex-governor said:“I was once a student union leader and believe me, if there is one man who does not like corruption, I do not like corruption. “I came here with a copy of the so-called panel report; there is nowhere that the panel indicted me. I am ready to tender this report before the Senate. “I was ready for the questions on it and I brought the panel report so that the Senate can juxtapose it with the White Paper.” Governor Nyesom Wike whose election has been nullified today, October 24, had set up a commission of inquiry to probe the administration of Amaechi. |

Lagos - The Police in Lagos on Tuesday foiled a robbery attempt on Access and Diamond bank in Lagos. The unsuccessful robbery which lasted several hours was abandoned due to the engagement of the Nigerian Police and other security agencies. The Area Commander, Area E, Festac division, Mr Frank Mba, who briefed newsmen on the incident, said that the command received information about the robbery at about 8.25 a.m. "Today, Oct. 13 2015, at about 8.25 a.m., the command received information on sporadic shooting going on at 4th avenue, Festac Town. "A joint team of policemen from the Area 'E' Command and Festac Division promptly responded to the incident. "On arrival at the scene, the Policemen engaged a gang of armed robbers numbering well over 40 all dressed in military camouflage and armed to the teeth. "The police engaged them in a fierce gun battle that lasted several minutes notwithstanding the clear numerical disadvantage of the police at the beginning of this operation. "The hot exchange of fire between the policemen and the robbers who incidentally had shared themselves into two groups by simultaneously robbing two banks forced the robbers to abruptly end their operation. "They consequently abandoned the operation and they were also forced to abandon the sum of N27m but as they were fleeing they were equally forced to abandon a total of 240 life AK-47 life ammunition. "The money was later recovered by the police and escorted to another branch of Diamond Bank located somewhere along 2nd Avenue where the money was deposited. "The scene of crime was later cordoned off while support teams from the command headquarters, the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) Ikeja, and also the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Panti, as well as men of the Nigerian Army from Ojo Cantonment joined us," he said. ACP Mba added that the Commissioner of Police has commenced investigations so that the suspects will be rounded up in time. "Investigation has since commenced and the CP has vowed to do everything humanly and operationally possible to ensure that the perpetrators of this criminal act are rounded up within the shortest possible time and brought to book. "Within the two banks, nobody died but someone sustained injury at diamond bank and the person is responding very well to treatment. "On the part of the law enforcement agencies, no injuries, no death recorded. "We are working on the report of the 2-year-old baby that got shot. "We heard that as well. We are trying to liaise with the community to locate and deal with the incident. "Mopping up operation is still on-going and if there are other information that are not available, we will get it across. "Preliminary information shows that they came through the waterways and equally exited through the waterways," he said. He, however, added that the Marine Police had been actively involved in curtailing the activities of the hoodlums and pointed out the challenges. "Their operations spread across every part of the state where there are waterways from Badagary to Epe, Lagos-Island, Oworonsoki, Ikorodu and up to Festac. "But you must equally understand that depending on the size of the boat of the Marine Police, there are some waterways that are still inaccessible. "There are some waterways which the boat of the Nigerian Navy and the Nigerian Police cannot access if the waterway is not big enough to carry those operational boats. "I want to re assure you that there are on-going massive operations to block all waterways in Lagos and that operation by God's grace will be extended to Festac." he said. - NAN |
