I don't really know what Wong Kar Wai was cooking with the cinematography and the first few minutes of the flick, where it leads like a crime tale. But the deeper I got into this flick the clearer the realization that this isn't what I expected or thought it to be.

Wong Kar Wai has this very distinct auteur style of storytelling and directiy. He's like the David Lynch of Asia. Also has that weird uneasy taste in sound design and music score.

It's a weird tale about human connections and loneliness. One thing you can always count on Wong Kar Wai to deliver on is emotions, loneliness, longing and rejection.
He's a specialist in that fare.

Good film if you're looking to dig into more Asian fare away from the usual suspects — Hollywood or Korean.
I love his cinematography.

Have you seen In the Mood for Love?

Concrete Utopia ..... 8/10

Premise:

Concrete Utopia is set in Seoul shortly after a titanic earthquake destroys the city, and follows the residents of a building that miraculously remained intact.

The main female lead was annoying af...she and her silly morality almost ruined the entire movie. I hated every single moment she was on screen...

This is a big surprise

I have never seen a comedy get so much positive buzz since Game Night 2018
I watched the original trilogy.

Nigerian-made action horror comic. It's called Celestial Eyes. It follows a paranormal detective (who can violate my human rights anyday btw) who solves strange cases in Lagos.

Pretty good so far, it has nice art, the mc seems interesting, it also has fanservice and gore so I can't complain.

My biggest gripe is that there is some pseudo-intellectual yapping that feels like padding and takes time away the good parts.

All in all it was good read so I thought I'd give it shout here to support a Nigerian creator who is actually making good stuff.

PS: the fourth Pic is basically just the opposite of "Nah, I'd win."

Shinobi: Heart Under Blade (2005).....7.5/10

Premise:
The movie is set in the year 1614, where two characters from opposing ninja tribes have fallen in love. But their villages have been at war for over 400 years but are now under a truce from the command of the shogunate, but hostilities and hate from all the bloodshed over the years remain.
The emperor now fears any rebellion that may enlist the help of either ninja tribe, and starts a scheme where he commands the leaders of the two villages to pick five of their best ninjas to battle the other tribe’s best five warriors. The surviving tribe will determine a particular lord to serve under the emperor.

It's basically follows the fate of the ninjas (who live for battle) in a time where they are no longer needed since the present emperor wants to retain the state of peace.

The World of Kanako (2014).....7/10

This movie follows an ex-policeman who gets informed by his ex-wife that their daughter is missing and he goes on a search to find his missing daughter, Kanako.
His search leads him uncovering the dark twisted world of his daughter.

First of all, I do not like this movie despite my rating. Every character is unlikeable and the worst human beings.

The protagonist himself is a terrible husband/father who assaulted his ex-wife after he found her cheating on him which led to him losing his marriage and his job. He assaulted his daughter as well on multiple occasions.
His search for his daughter who he thought to be pure and innocent reveals that she indeed took after him and she became even worse than him.
While he loves her as his daughter, he begins to hate her and seek to kill her himself because she represents the worst parts of himself which he detests.

The movie intertwines love and hate being different sides of a coin....

Throughout the movie, his facade of his daughter being the innocent pure girl he envisioned who was led astray by corrupt friends who brought her into the life of drugs and gangs slowly fades away. He soon realizes the circumstances are the opposite and she is the one destroying the lives of others.

This movie follows 4 different timelines at once and features a lot of dark moments from physical to séxual assault to the life of drug abuse and prostitution among teenagers and adults.

It is one thing for a movie to have every character being unlikeable, but to watch a movie for 2 hours with no one to root for becomes a drag after a while. It became tiring and at a point, I could not wait for the movie to end. It is a very niche movie that I would not recommend unless to someone willing to venture into the twisted world of dark japanese media

White Night (2009).....8/10

Spoilerless thoughts:
A story of love, tragedy and murder across 14 years. It follows the fate of two people in love who experience trauma in their childhood and whose lives get defined by it so much that they could not be together...

While one lives in the light with all it's glamor, the other lives in the shadow.

Basically, the more intensely the light shines, the darker the shadow it casts.
Not just in the title, but throughout the entire movie and the ending, the imagery is established. With one character having to get further into darkness for the other to shine. There were quite some uncomfortable scenes but luckily the movie doesn't linger on them but instead gets the point across.

At the start of the movie, I was confused but everything clicked once the mystery regarding the murders and the character relationships unravelled.

I also love the cinematography, even for an old movie such as this. It was good. And the classical soundtracks as well, they were pretty good.

The racism and ineptitude of the cops also aided in his escapes. They were one time called to a crime scene and people described a white male but they put out an apb for a black man.

So many cases like that where serial killers could have been earlier caught but because of racism, they go scot free
To be fair... information back then was a problem. They had to deal with contradictory information and false/inconsistent eye witnesses...

To top it all, there was jurisdiction issues and lack of cooperation among different divisions. Investigation might have been far easier if their materials were consolidated but different divisions were monopolizing their information...

All these you mentioned, is why he was indeed, very crafty

The cyphers having grammatical errors was part of the ruse, to mislead, mock and intimidate, rather than it being down to ignorance. those grammatical errors were intentional. those errors made it more difficult for code breakers to decipher since, the cyphers avoided standard patterns and normal word patterns, lexicons and structures were disrupted.

His acts spanning a wide region, was a nightmare for the FBI and local enforcement agencies, making it more difficult for a coordinated man hunt, further complicated by him using different murder weapon, making it seem like the murders were been committed by different people, when infact, it was just one person. The modus operandi of most serial killer is to follow one define pattern, kill in the same area, use same murder weapon/style making them an easy catch for the authorities, but not the Zodiac Killer
It was clear that it was the same person. He literally claimed credit and had a symbol.

To me he seemed more like someone who craved attention. Reason for the notes and cyphers and threats to release them.
He wanted publicity.

The message in his notes barely made any sense...he just wanted to be well known and he acheived this. He had several copycat killers and detectives obsessed over him...

His 2nd cypher which was recently solved in like 2020 revealed further pointless information that showed he was just toying with the police

Special.... Special Film 🌟

What is worse than a serial killer? A very intelligent serial killer!...One of my most fascinating cases when i was prolifing serial killers. The crafty bastard was never caught and the case remains unsolved till this day, he just lead the FBI on a long wild goose chase.

David Fincher is certainly one to properly make a serial killer flick, he is just too good, with this material. Only "The Social Network" (2010) ranks above this for me, from his impressive filmography
I don't think he was that crafty tho...

Even his cyphers contained many grammatical errors. His mystery is intriguing but I genuinely think the circumstances helped him rather than his smarts...

His acts spanned a wide region which helped him a lot...
And there wasn't much to go by since there was very little connection between the victims...
And he knew when to stop or he would have been caught

Synopsis:
In South London, a group of normal people suddenly develop superpowers, and the only apparent connection between them is that they are all Black; as they deal with the impact of their powers on their daily lives, one man must bring them together.

Thoughts: (mostly spoilerless)
The concept is good. But the acting and writing are amateurish. It's like if Heroes S1 was written by a highschooler...
All the characters are way too stûpid. They make the worst decisions everytime. It's like only stûpid people got the powers. Even the organization hunting them are so incompetent.

There were so many interesting ideas and concepts to explore but the writers failed woefully to do so. Blabbing time travel concepts like the butterfly effect but not properly exploring it. Despite the characters knowing about the butterfly effect, they were too stûpid to realize how their actions could change the timeline of things to come...

Even the future version of the MC was so stûpid despite being supposed to have more knowledge. You sent someone back in time to stop something without giving the person any info on how it happens of what exactly caused it

Did you even read what I said?? 🤔

I've been talking about the "Marketing" to female fans. The movie also fits their demography of women wanting female Superheroines and stories to look up to.

BARBIE movie itself isn't even an unserious movie to turn off the male audience despite being a female geared movie, so why do you think SUPERGIRL can't do the same.

Even you yourself didn't believe in the movie or understood what it stood for before its release and you were the number one h@ter here for that movie.

It's actually funny you think I don't know the audience of female Superhero movies when I read comics myself and knee-deep in the genre. It's funny coming from you in particular. grin grin

I guess you don't know what comic the movie is being adapted from. SUPERGIRL: Woman of Tomorrow is easily the best Supergirl story EVER. And well liked and rated by comic fans — yeah the male audience you know so much about.

I guess you don't know why males flocked to the BARBIE movie as well. Margot Robbie I believe has more male fans than female fans in my opinion. Similarly as Greta Gerwig. So it's no surprise men even dressed up and prepped for that movie.
If I had the time and free cash then to see that movie.... I would have bought the whole merchandise and dressed up in PINK on opening day. 😂😂

I don't think you know what Prime marketing means. Harley Quinn easily outsells merchandise way more than Superman sef as a DC character.
I was the number 1 hater of Barbie?
Do you have any proof of the above or it's just baseless claims as usual?

You ignored my entire point and went on a rant that conveniently ignored everything I said.

My statement is clear. I do not believe that marketing Supergirl to the Barbie crowd would work. Because Supergirl is a superhero movie and the superhero genre is male audience dominated.

I don't think even advertising it as a "Barbie-esqe" movie will bring in the "Barbie Female" audience. It would still be a superhero movie to them.

Dismissing every point I made with a simple term of "marketing will fix it" is lazy. Same as ignoring it and going on a long rant...

Of course everything I typed is my opinion. I may be wrong and I stand to be corrected.

Nobody thought female led superhero films were going to be successful until DC proved everyone wrong with Wonder Woman in 2017. That movie is the singular reason female superhero stories are now given more prominence and even solo movies.
We can do it again.

I've always felt Supergirl is somewhat weaker too but recent box office dynamics and audience behaviour makes me think this film can do moderately well if it's good and with good marketing.

The fact that Jason Momoa is in this movie makes its hopes for success all the more likely, that's why I'm happy for the casting. Milly Alcock has also tasted some good level of popularity from the GOT universe and fanbase, so that helps, unlike SUPERMAN where the lead is almost a nobody.

Now where I think things will be very crucial is marketing this movie well for the BARBIE fanbase. That demographic of women can do wonders. Girl power. She's got it. Appeal to women, she's well liked. So if WB can nail the marketing to that demographic just like how BARBIE became an event movie for females of ALL ages worldwide — this movie can be successful.
That demographic is currently suffering serious neglect. There's hardly enough of any at all, good movies geared towards females presently in Hollywood. That's why I was damn sure BARBIE would do well years ago despite everyone mocking me saying it was gonna flop. Having the face of Margot Robbie and the guiding hands of well liked director Greta Gerwig meant assured success.

It's because of BARBIE scenario that's why I feel this movie might do well, also not being farther from SUPERMAN release extends enough goodwill to this project.
SUPERMAN has done half of the job— driving excitement for the new universe and upcoming films. The rest is on the individual projects themselves.
Milly Alcock is well loved and seen as a fast rising star. Jason Momoa is a household name and both can sell this movie

But with due respect, catering to the Barbie fanbase will do this movie more harm than good imo...

It is the male audience rather than the female audience who mostly sell Superhero movies. Even the "girl-power" superhero movies still rely on mostly the male audience.

Barbie was a success because it was a different type of movie made specifically to cater to younger women and appealed to them and even at that, the male audience supported it greatly...hence the Barbieheimer

But when it comes to Superhero movies, 90% of the audience will likely be male and not female.

A "Barbie" type of Superhero movie will flop imo because the male audience will be turned off and the female superhero fanbase barely exist and won't turn up...

$100mn marketing budget...$225mn production budget. Great. No wonder WB execs said they'd be happy with a $500mn global haul. Zaslav is happy. We move.

SUPERMAN has done what it was tasked to do. Successfully launch a new universe with critical acclaim and rave audience reception as well as prove it can make money.

We can say it with confidence now. DC IS BACK!!!
The fandom has never been this optimistic for almost a decade.
Lol...

I think Superman was always going to succeed because of the hype around the entire "Future of Comic Book movie Franchise" resting on it's shoulders...which I think was ridiculous to start with as no single movie alone can determine that...

I am glad it is doing well...I didn't expect that much positive reaction to it, but I expected it to succeed financially...

But those Supergirl and Lantern projects don't look like they will garner that much interest.

Who TF cares about Supergirl huh
A character like Supergirl is one who cannot stand on her own. A female version of Superman because every successful male superhero must have a female version...

I may be wrong but I don't see a Supergirl movie succeeding unless they plan to advertise it as being very integral to Superman like the way a certain movie was advertised as being integral to Endgame

Edit:

On second thoughts, Milly Alcock is so pretty that she might sell the Supergirl movie by herself...
I will definitely watch it for her alone even though I don't care one bit about Supergirl

SUMMER BLOCKBUSTER!!!

I wanted this movie to flop but I was proven wrong.

This movie does everything right. The jokes. The subtle political themes (Israel v Palestine). The action. The visuals.

The movie was well paced. No boring part. I really hated Lex Luthor which means the actor did his acting well. Lex Luthor hated superman with a passion. Gaddem. The casting was just so good.

Abduleez1 well done. You escaped blasting as this movie didn't flop.

Sha, lets see if DC can keep this up.

Fantastic 4 movies usually flop hard. Let's see what marvel will do...
I have mostly reserved my opinion on this Superman movie...

I have only expressed my positive take on making Superman more human and vulnerable and the return to the root of what Superman stands for...saving people...

But what doesn't sit right with me is this whole talk about comedy...I have a hard time seeing how that will work in a Superman movie...it might not work for me...

I have never been a fan of the whole "James Gunn comedy" in Superhero movies...

Maybe this movie will be different, I'll give my opinion whenever I watch it...
