taharqa: lol... So NNPC 'diverting' $49.5billion of its Crude Oil sales from d Federation Account, koo? I thought I even saw $49million initiali. So how much does Nigeria make in Sales of Crude Oil in a year or two, esp since they 'remitted' $15billion to d Federation Account according to this account?? And there was still money to run budgets- FG, States and LGAs??.... Abeg, make people learn how to talk lie well

Mumu here is your answer.

“Our analysis of the value of crude oil export proceeds based on the documentation received from pre-shipment inspectors shows that between January 2012 and July 2013, NNPC lifted 594,024,107 barrels of crude valued at $65,332,350,514.57,” the letter said. “Out of this amount, NNPC repatriated only $15,528,410,098.77 representing 24% of the value. This means the NNPC is yet to account for, and repatriate to the Federation Account, an amount in excess of $49.804 billion of the value of oil lifted in the same period.”

It is the reason why he emphasises "how bad the situation is".

It is the same reason why Ngozi cannot give any cogent response to Amaechi's questions but would rather throw up lame figures on how much of Rivers statutory payment has been paid. It is the same reason why we cannot hold our reserves in a period of rising oil prices.

Oil prices are going up. Why is Nigeria drawing from savings? Why is the FG to unable to implement its budgets satisfactorOly? Why are the states complaining of being shortchanged?

President Jonafraud cannot answer these questions. It is one week, one theft.

If we are to believe historic data on growth in Nigeria, Nigeria's economy has always been growing. In fact, it grew at close to 9% in the early 1990s. However, for an inefficient statistical system like we have in Nigeria, such figures will always be taken with a pinch of salt. Fact is, the reality on the ground does little to suggest that the economy is growing or has grown in the past.

On the IMFs assessment of risk. What the IMF asks for here is a currency devaluation which is unrealistic given Nigeria's high import dependence. I'm of the view that with genuine reforms, devaluation could bring positive impacts on the economy. However, in an economy where leadership is bankrupt, such reforms will continue to be a mirage and devaluation will only lead to further pressure on the naira, reserves and there will be a need to further devalue to achieve stability.

Mexico, the kidnap headquarters of the world has a far higher crime rate than Nigeria, yet it has over 5 auto assembly/manufacturing plants. Even Brazil's crime rate is higher than that of the whole West Africa put together, yet we import heavy duty city (luxurious) buses from there.

I don't see why as Nigerians we desperately find excuse of/for reasons why we shouldn't do anything and thus, fail. If we want change, clamour for change, yet we don't want a change in the staus quo ante. Then how do we change?

You better stop mentioning Mexico as Mexico benefits through the NAFTA and tariff free trade to the US. The Mexican and the Nigerian case should not be compared.
Politics / Re: GEJ- Nissan To Build Cars In Nigeria by ballabriggs: 2:05pm On Dec 07, 2013
The only thing this policy will lead to is a rise in the prices of automobiles in Nigeria similar to the Latin American countries in the early 1990s. Nigeria today is not an efficient country for vehicle manufacturing.

Nigeria does not have the capacity to compete with other countries in automobile manufacturing, cannot produce enough to meet domestic demand and will still need to import the bulk of its cars.

Bla bla bla China wants nothing to do with the UK, only ignorant people like you think so.

The HS2 deal is soon going to be signed with China as a major partner. On the other side, some British companies have their production lines in China.

China also trades in the London euro dollar market. Yet you think China wants nothing to do with UK.

The joke is on you.

One thing some of you ignorant folks don't know is that if those countries stop selling debts, China will go down as the demand for Chinese exports will drop.
Politics / Re: Experts Hail Nigeria's Soaring Nonoil Exports, As Economy Diversifies by ballabriggs: 9:51pm On Dec 02, 2013
Pukkah:

The economy is not yet diversified. However, if this report is anything to rely on, absolute figures for non-oil exports have gone up. Oil remains the contributor of the lion share to foreign exchange earnings and this is not likely to change in the short run. We also don't know how much accrued to the government as revenue from the non-oil exports earnings.

There are many problems in the economy. There is massive and unprecedented oil theft which government appears unsure and unprepared to tackle aggressively. Oil revenue is falling and government is pussy footing on corruption and the word out there is that the Jonathan government is very soft on corruption. A lot of government spending disappears into corruption and waste which is why there's a disparity between the so-called economic growth and standard of living of the people.

Like you said, the CBN is pursuing very tight monetary policies and is yet to have a model that can reduce the high interest rates, inflation rate and strengthen the exchange rate. Sometimes I pity the CBN though because it can't control the goebrnment's fiscal policies. The infrastructure is still weak and the cost of doing business is still high.

If, in spite of these problems the non-oil exports sector was able to post these figures, I think it's commendable.

You see these people from 1999 to date have always posted figures of improved non-oil sectors. But what do we know? We know that any slight drop in earnings from oil puts this country in disarray. So who is deceiving who.

I only need to see what the CBN does to make judge whether it is diversified or diversifying.

It is still a high risk country subject to fluctuating oil revenues.
Politics / Re: Experts Hail Nigeria's Soaring Nonoil Exports, As Economy Diversifies by ballabriggs: 9:36pm On Dec 02, 2013
taharqa: Diversify- ing, not Diversifi- ed. No one ever said Nigeria's Economy was already Diversified, but that it was on the path of Diversification and doing so apace....... And by d way, d % of Oil Revenue to d budget has reduced to the borderhood of just about 60% (down from about 80%-85% some few years ago), WHILST that of NonOil Revenue (NonOil Export is only a part of) is approaching 40%. So your assumptions are wrong. Only Oil Revenue as a % of Foreign Exchange Earning has remained high at over 80% (although this too has also come down slightly from around 95% some few years ago albeit more slowly)...

Non-oil revenue 40% of budget? Reason why they cannot implement budgets to 40%.

Rubbish
Politics / Re: Experts Hail Nigeria's Soaring Nonoil Exports, As Economy Diversifies by ballabriggs: 8:32pm On Dec 02, 2013
Diversified? Rubbish

Where oil is still the main source of government revenue and spending. Where oil is the main foreign exchange earner.

I only need to see the monetary policy direction of the CBN to know if the economy is diversified.

With falling oil revenue, it is raising interest rates to reduce the pressure on the reserves, it is devaluing the naira to hold the reserves and maintain macroeconomic stability. But guess what, it is still far from stability.

To talk of a diversified economy is grand delusion.

manny4life: .

Go on and clap for yourself, in your bid to hastily quote me, READ AGAIN.

You have succeeded in showing how shallow your reasoning is, as someone who has knowledge on credits and deductions, I would take the time to cure your ignorance.

The American standard of poverty is defined a baseline attributable to groups of people who fit the profile, they are lumped into different categories, most common is individual or Joint (filing as family). These folks earn income (without taxes as well as other expense) below a limit. For individuals with a single family, it's 11,500 I believe, @ a standard 2,040 annual hours, the person earns WAY below minimum wage = $5.63per hour. For individuals with family of two, four, five, or whatever size of family, the threshold increases. Keep in mind, this is the "HOUSEHOLD" income, so both mother and father are making this amount or father or mother is "Head of Household".

Your blind allusion that someone who earns $23,550 even before taxes for a family of four, considering the factors (children expenses, accommodation, traveling, possibly healthcare, education expense, feeding, and what not), considering all these factors, would you dare compare someone in the U.S. to Nigeria? A standard household like that needs a 2br apartment which depending on the area, goes for $650, now multiply that by 12months = $7800 annually just for accommodation. How many poor people pay $600 monthly for rent? If you can answer that question, then we can continue, if NOT, STOP DISGRACING YOURSELF.

We've not taken into consideration his tax liability, as well as other information I listed, so before you start hyperventilating, cure your ignorance first. $23,000 to you in Nigeria is big money, but for a family of four here WITH KIDS, is POOR. This is why they have different credits they qualify for, the Child Care Credit, Earned Income credit, healthcare deductions, and tons more so it can buffer them, so please again, DON'T EVER compare U.S. salary attributable to Nigeria. I mentioned U.S. as an example that there are pan handlers on the street, just like Nigeria, U.S. has increased poverty as well, and you're equating their own poverty standard to Nigeria...

You are the one who is ignorant here. He has not argued that households earning that amount in the US are not poor but the argument is that poverty can be viewed relatively and according to standards in different countries.

A bowl of cereal and toast can be seen as a standard breakfast in Uganda but it is not the same in the US. That is poverty in relative terms.

However when we look at absolute poverty, a large percentage of US poor will not be considered as poor again and large percentage of Nigerians will fall into this line.

Understand the crux of his argument.

Gbam Wike is a tout!!!
According to Wike, "we will not allow them hold us to ransom".

The core problem according to Wike is that they are holding us to ransom. Good!

Now let us do a little problem solving. The core problem is these lecturers hold us to ransom. Why?

Possibly because the demand for University tutors far exceeds the supply as can be seen in the tutor student ratio of about 500 students to 1 tutor. Another problem, why?

Possibly because we have not been investing in bringing more tutors to reduce this gap.

Now let us turn these problems into solutions.

Solution, invest in research in these universities. Invest in new systems, facilities, equipments and tools to boost research in these universities. Develop strategies and seek new ways to continually improve these institutions.

Is this not what ASUU has been asking for? Can Wike not use ASUUs "wahala" to solve a problem?

Can the FG not have a plan to grow the number of PhDs in our universities by 30000 in the next 5 years? Can someone ask the tout Wike what plan he has to reduce the tutor-student ratio in our universities.

With an added advantage that these researches and researchers contribute to innovation and technical change in our country.

But they are not interested as they are not change agents. They are agents of theft, corruption and blackmail. They want the easy way of lies and deceit.

This is ignorant!

It is not your $1 as you change at your BDC but economic prices. The poverty head count line is US$1 for extreme poverty and US$2 for poverty a day in PPP all in 1985 prices. It is not the currency but the basket of goods that amount will buy. The PPP $1 a day standard denotes not what a US dollar can actually buy in Nigeria but what a US dollar will buy in the US in 1985.

Given Nigeria's double digits inflation rate and the less than 4% US rate over these period, it may interest you to know that US$ 1 ppp can even be at about N1300 today.

So please understand the standard and what is being measured before you criticise.
