Really?

I am not an advocate of Peter Obi, so i wouldn't want to go singing his praises,
The facts are he is a seasoned economist, who inherited a heavily indebted state and was able to turn that around, i don't see any ignorance in commending that.
He laid an economic foundation by focusing on projects that will generate revenue, state oil refineries, breweries etc, therefore he was able to reduce his borrowing to a minimum, with this he was able to sustain his capital expenditure and clear his debts.

Yes to accelerate the development of Africa, you need debt finance from external sources. That Dubai you see today grew with a lot of debt finance. Islamic finance, bonds etc It is needed to speed-up development.

Of what use is it that he reduced debt and Anambra remains a shit hole after 8 years. What revenue are we talking about? Max at N2 billion per month. Can that meet a quarter of the States development needs? Where will the rest come from?

I really hope that doesn't happen.
Peter Obi is not perfect but his ability to erase all the states debt despite some massive capital project is commendable.
I only wish he allowed soludo a chance.

Imo's case is indeed disturbing, APC party ideologies with debt is not at all encouraging.
I hope Anambra doesn't get entangled with debts if APC wins which is very unlikely.

That one Peter Obi does not borrow, does that make it appropriate?

The fact is, being below an optimum debt level could be as bad as exceeding it. It is about optimality.

Also can you finance development in Anambra without debt? Where will the funds come from?

Fact is, to develop Africa you will need to seek finance from outside as Africa cannot meet its development finance requirements. To praise a man for not seeking debt finance could be ignorant.

In choosing a source of finance, a finance person will consider, ongoing service cost, issue costs, the balance between debt and other sources of finance, risk, flexibility, existing covenants, cash flow etc. These things are analysed before determining if debt finance is appropriate.

Every government has a debt capacity. That you borrow to finance your expenditure is not bad as debt finance can be cheaper than other finance sources and can also make more funds available than will be from other sources. It is basic finance and financial management.

That you ignorantly put up an article without an analysis of what is optimum for the state shows your level of education.

Lagos can have the highest debt profile and so what? What does it mean? What are the implications? What are the risks? What are the cash flow implications? This is what we are more concerned about.

There is nothing complex about it. If the country makes earnings from it while selling/transferring it to another country, it is an EXPORT. In your example, if money exchanged hands between china and Mexico, it is a chinese export to Mexico. The finished product is a Mexican EXPORT to the US.

lol you actually think it is that simple.

Do you actually think the US will accept it as a Mexican export?

What I've just given you is an example of the issues with NAFTA.
Food / Re: Why Is Nigerian Food Not As Popular As Chinese? by ballabriggs: 8:49am On Oct 26, 2013
A-town:

How so? Define Exports?

Some of the arguments with identitying a countries exports can be seen in trade under NAFTA between US and Mexico. If someone exports a shirt to the US from Mexico, we say it is a Mexican export and it moves without barriers. However this shirts could have been partly finished in China and only the buttons fixed in Mexico.

Do we still then say it is a Mexican export? Do we say it us a Chinese export?

These are issues that are subject to never ending debates in the globalisation and trade literature. We can go on and on arguing this and we will never get definite answers to some of these questions as economists.

This is even a straightforward case, there are more complex cases with identitying exports from a country.

If you want more read on this, refer to Krugman's, International Economics: theory and policy, to have a better understanding.

Guy, you are wrong. ROSSIK is actually correct on this one. Whether the company is foreign owned makes no difference. If the goods are made in your country and sent out of the country in substantial amounts, you are an exporter of that commodity. Whether it is made in or manufactured in Nigeria does not matter. Nigeria makes money when these goods are exported even if the foreign companies repatriate their dollars to their home countries. Your reference to Shell is a joke. Nigeria EXPORTS crude. PERIOD. Nigeria exports a shit load of timber, agricultural products etc

Do not mix up local manufacturing with exporting.

He is not wrong and I can refer to evidences in the literature to support his assertions.

Allohrandy: I I think Ethiopian restaurants is the most popular African restaurants. Most African restaurants in the states are operated by Ethiopians

Oh really. While in the UK, Nigerian restaurants are the most popular African restaurants.
Food / Re: Why Is Nigerian Food Not As Popular As Chinese? by ballabriggs: 7:32am On Oct 26, 2013
You see this boy called Rossik thinks he knows a lot but he is a very ignorant fellow. Some of the arguments I have seen here on nationality of products and organisations are arguments seen in the International Economics literature.

What is an American good? What is a Chinese good? What is an Italian company?

Debates are usually inconclusive on these issues as globalisation has increasingly made it difficult for economists to identify these things. Read Krugman's, International Economics where he writes about trade creation and trade diversion in custom unions to have a better understanding.

Point here is, when you come to a forum like this, you should be open to views from the other side. No one cares what fake articles you've been googling online.

The man Afam4ever has made valid points. I'm not saying he is right or he is wrong but his points are worth considering as we gain new knowledge.

Mister G:

The problem Nigerians are not pulling their money and expertise like the Ethiopians did in both California and Washington DC. What is interesting a good percent of the business between on fairfax avenue btw Olympic and Pico are Ethiopia, and the area is designated as little Ethiopia.

You also have Nigerian restaurants like those ones. The question is, how popular is an Ethiopian dish?

You have left trail of disappointments throughout the discussions on this BMW saga procured by NCAA for ministry of aviation. It is unfortunate you had it all wrong when lamented about the absence of tender board only to find out there was one. I am not surprised to see you jumping like a drunkard over the alleged itemization of the budget when there is none. If the ministry’s budget was itemized, I challenged the SaharaReporters and the House of Representatives Committee on Aviation to inform the general public other items the committee rejected on the 2013 ministry of aviation budget.

Dede aturu, at your age you should be the one condemning theft. However what I see in you are the features of a hardened criminal.

Where did you see the evidence that a request for bids was duly advertised? Where is the evidence that the board of NCAA sat and approved the contract?
Politics / Re: House Committee Says It Rejected NCAA Budget Proposal To Buy Armored BMW Cars Fo by ballabriggs: 6:25pm On Oct 24, 2013
So the house rejected a budget of N70 million on this vehicle, yet these people went ahead to spend N112 million on the same vehicle.

These people are wicked, these people are hardened criminals, these people are devilish.

She will not say the truth as she is a hardened criminal. The only way to make her say the truth is to bring Sergeant Rogers to torture her.

What does her theft of over N100 million have to do with the nonsense submitted by this group.

Why is her car more pricey than President Jonadunces car? If this criminal group can answer this then they are safe. Till then they are bunch of rogues seeking relevance and a share of the kickback from Dede Cosmas.

Listen to Madam Vampire and her tales.

Madam vampire tactically ignored the fact that these cars were bought for her but goes on about, FAA, ICAO, IATA bla bla bla.

As earlier stated by her spokesman, these cars were purchased for her. How does buying a car for the minister align with the core functions of the NCAA?

Someone should please ask madam vampire, that what happens to the lives of those inspectors and auditors in NCAA. Those who daily put their lives in the line of fire, reporting dubious characters like madam vampire. Do we also grant them $1.6 million armoured cars? Or their own lives is "an act of god"?

That madam vampire justifies the exorbitant price of this vehicle on the basis that it was a lease tells me she is a hardened criminal. What interest rate was applied on this 36 months lease bringing the price to over 100% of the market value? Was it an interest rate of over 100%?

Semi-illiterates yelling Alpha Beta without the understanding that a tax advisor or strategist is different from a collector. Alpha Beta as well as I know is a consultant to the Lagos Government advising on strategies to decrease the tax gap by plugging loop holes in tax legislations for a commission. They also design IT systems for efficient tax administration in Lagos. Aspire does the same for HMRC in the UK.

It is standard practice for such advisors to receive a percentage of the amount generated. For example, if a tax consultant is able to reduce my tax burden, he gets a percentage of my savings. It is standard and reason why taxation is a very lucrative part of accounting. Some tax consultants take 10%, others take 20%, some could take as much as 30 to 40%.

It is what your knowledge as a professional can earn you.
