Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho insists the Premier League champions have no plans to make significant additions to his squad, revealing that he is relishing the prospect of mounting a title defence with the same set of players. Apart from the arrival of striker Radamel Falcao and the departure of goalkeeper Petr Cech, Chelsea have been largely inactive in the summer transfer window while rivals such as Manchester United have spent heavily. And although Chelsea continue to be linked to a move for Everton’s English defender John Stones, Mourinho is adamant there is no chance of the club making a major splurge in the transfer market. http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/2015/07/football-mourinho-rules-out-transfer-splurge/ |

Agbaje Agbaje What would make a company sue another for N30 billion? That was the question on the lips of many when the news recently broke that four companies under the Innoson Group, including Nigeria’s first indigenous automobile manufacturing company (Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Company Limited), had slammed a N30 billion suit on a bank as damages for the freezing of 18 bank accounts belonging to Innoson companies. The figure was broken into three: N20 billion was for freezing of their bank accounts in all Nigerian banks from September 1, 2014 to June 15, 2015. N5 billion was for reputational damages and/or injuries suffered by the companies. Another N5 billion was for general damages. What led to all this? Investigation shows that Innoson and the bank have had a business relationship since 2003. But all that was to change when the Nigerian Customs Service Board seized and auctioned some goods imported by Innoson despite satisfying the importation agreement. http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/2015/07/why-innoson-sued-new-generation-bank-for-n30-billion/ |

Map of Nigeria, showing Damaturu and Maiduguri At least nine people have died in explosions at prayers for the Muslim festival of Eid in the Nigerian town of Damaturu, the army says. The two female suicide bombers included a 10-year-old girl, said Nigerian army spokesman Col Sani Usman. There were two blasts at a venue where volunteers were waiting to screen worshippers, he said. No group has said it carried the attack but Boko Haram has recently stepped up its campaign of violence. They have been forced out of most areas they had seized but have increased their attacks since President Muhammudu Buhari took office in May. Some 300 people have been killed this month. The explosions were at an open-air praying area, known as Eid grounds, which were set aside for Muslims to gather to pray at the end of the holy fasting month of Ramadan. Because of the threat of a Boko Haram attack, worshippers were being searched before they reached the Eid grounds - this is where the explosions happened. Col Usman said four persons died in the first explosion and five died in the second explosion. "The first blast went off around 07:15 local time (06:15 GMT) while security volunteers who had come earlier than worshippers were waiting for the worshippers so they could assist in crowd control," added eye witness Ahmad Adamu, a security volunteer. "While we were attending to the victims we heard another blast about 500 metres (547 yards) away," he added. On Thursday, explosions targeting people shopping for Eid at a market in the north-eastern city of Gombe killed at least 49 people. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-33565992 |
Manchester United new signing Morgan Schneiderlin scored a debut goal as the English Premier League giants launched their four-match US tour with a 1-0 victory over Club America of Mexico Friday. Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal was satisfied after a testing first run-out for his new-look squad. http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/2015/07/schneiderlin-scores-as-united-launch-tour-with-win/ |

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Tuesday battled to hold his ruling Syriza party together as opposition mounted to a shocking new bailout deal that requires Athens to push through draconian reforms within two days. With around 30 hardline Syriza lawmakers threatening to oppose the latest tough reforms demanded by Greece’s international creditors, Tsipras faced the unenviable task of turning to pro-austerity opposition parties to push the deal through parliament by Wednesday. In the agreement struck Monday with the eurozone to prevent Greece crashing out of the euro, the Greek parliament must pass sweeping changes to labour laws, pensions, VAT and taxes. Only then will the 18 other eurozone leaders start negotiations over what Greece is to get in return: a three-year bailout worth up to 86 billion euros ($96 billion), its third rescue programme in five years. http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/2015/07/greeces-tsipras-rallies-political-support-for-tough-bailout-terms/ |
Manchester United have completed the double signing of Germany midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger and France international Morgan Schneiderlin. Schweinsteiger, 30, has signed a three-year contract from Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich for a reported £14.4m. Schneiderlin has moved from fellow Premier League club Southampton for a fee in the region of £25m. The 25-year-old midfielder has signed a four-year contract with the option to extend it by a further year. United have already signed forward Memphis Depay and defender Matteo Darmian this summer and the two new arrivals take their spending to more than £80m. Schweinsteiger played under United boss Louis van Gaal when the Dutchman managed Bayern between 2009 and 2011. "I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Bayern Munich. It has been an incredible journey and I didn't take the decision to leave lightly," said the German. "Manchester United is the only club that I would have left Munich for. "I feel ready for this new and exciting challenge in what I regard as the most competitive league in the world and I am looking forward to working with Louis van Gaal again." NSC queries NFF over Keshi’s sack The Federal government through the National Sports Commission (NSC) yesterday threatened to stop the plan by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to unveil Nigerian former international, Sunday Ogochukwu Oliseh, as the new Super Eagles head coach on Wednesday, insisting that the appointment did not conform with the Procurement Act procedure for engagement. This is coming on the heels of the NSC query to the NFF over the sack of former Super Eagles Chief Coach, Stephen Keshi. The Guardian gathered from the NSC yesterday in Abuja that the commission had written to the NFF, insisting that the position of the head coach for the Super Eagles is still vacant, stressing that it has not received any official correspondent from the federation on the appointment and unveiling of any coach to replace Stephen Keshi, who was sacked last week for applying for the vacant coaching job in Cote d’Ivoire while still on the employment of the NFF..... http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/2015/07/fg-threatens-to-stop-olisehs-unveiling-on-wednesday/ |
