12 TIPS TO BOOST YOUR SALAT. 1. Say Allahu akbar and throw the world behind you. Did you ever think: why do we start our prayer with Allahu akbar not withsubhanAllah? Realize that when you sayAllahu akbar you affirm that the one before whom you are about to stand is greater than anything occupying you at that moment— greater than your sleep, your families, your bills, and your worries. Just imagine that when you say Allahu akbar while raising your hands you are throwing all of that behind you! 2. Visualize the veil. When you stand to pray, Allah ‘azza wa jall commands: Raise the veils from between Me and my servant! As soon as you say Allahu akbar and start your prayer, Allah sets His beautiful face to yours and doesn’t turn away from you, unless you do. When your thoughts or your sight drifts off, He orders the veils to be drawn back down. Visualize these veils being lifted to keep concentrated with your heart and body. Are you still drifting? This is why you repeat the great words Allahu akbar as you move into each position; it’s a reminder and a new chance again and again to focus! 3. Salute the King. Imagine walking into a palace, how would you recognize the servants of the king? Probably by their humble position: looking down. As you lower your gaze to the place of your prostration and place your hands right over left and close to your chest it is time to salute the King. Imagine standing in front of Allah ‘azza wa jall as you utter this beautiful saluation and feel each word: Subhanakallahum ma wa bihamdika, wa tabaarakasmuka wa ta’alaa jadduka— How perfect You are O Allah, and I praise You. Blessed be Your name, and lofty is Your position and none has the right to be worshipped except You. Realize that only the parts of salah you are mindful of are being accepted and that Shaytan does his very best to steal every sweet moment you have with Allah! 4. Feel each ayah of Surah Al-Fatiha is answered. You are now ready to enter the essence of it all: Surah Al-Fatiha, the greatest surah of the Quran, without which your prayer is nullified. Know that Allah Himself answers back when you recite of Surah Al-Fatiha, so add a short pause after each ayah, feeling this amazing dialogue. How can you ever drift of in this part of the prayer? 5. Utter His name with pure love. What has brought you to stand here right now? It is your love and longing to be with Allah ‘azza wa jall. And when you meet up with your beloved, what do you first say? The sweet sound of the beloved’s name, the name that blesses everything it falls upon! Feel thebismillaahir-rahmaanir- raheem soothing your heart as it gently rolls off your lips. 6. Stand still at: “the Lord of the worlds.” The Prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam told us, “Alhamdulillah fills the scale!”[Muslim] Really feel gratefulness when you say alhamdulillah. Did you see those documentaries where they zoom out from the cells of a plant’s leaf all the way to the planets and galaxies? Now instead of that leaf, start the zoom out process with the image of yourself standing before Allah. Then zoom back down, back through the universe, to the place you are standing in prayer. The next time you pray view yourself from above and far away and truly taste the meaning of Rabbil aalemeen (Lord of the worlds)! 7. Reflect on Ar-Rahmaanir Raheembefore Maaliki yawmid-Deen. Have you ever wondered why Allah’s names Ar-Rahmaanir and Ar-Raheem come before Maaliki yawmid-Deen (Master of the Day of Judgement)? Be reminded that it is the Most Gracious and Merciful who will judge us on the the Day of Judgement! So feel empowered and comforted when you say Ar-Rahmaanir-Raheem and then pause a moment at Maaliki yawmid- Deen, realizing the horrors of that Day. 8. Know what iyyaaka na’budu wa iyyaaka nasta’een really means. You alone we worship, and unto You alone we turn for help. Let this remind you to make Allah alone your focus, not the people. So when you are asked, why did you do this or that (deed), you can firmly answer: for Allah! Feel this ayah by knowing that the salaf used to weep for hours reciting it. One of them was once praying in Mecca. His friend went ahead and did the tawaf and when he returned to him, he was still at this verse, repeating it and crying, until the sun came up. 9. Say ameen as if your life depended on it. The most comprehensive supplication you can make is: ihdinas-siraatal- mustaqeem (Guide us to the straight path). See how you followed the proper etiquettes of how to ask Allah? You started glorifying and praising Him and then you make your request: Guide us. Now realize that your entire existence depends on this supplication. The ameen you’ll pronounce now will have to come from the bottom of your heart. Ameen means: My Lord, grant or answer (my prayers). Say ameen as if you have been sentenced to death and are pleading for pardon, begging with passion. 10. Feel the bond with your Lord. When you say subhana Rabbiyya- al-‘atheem (How perfect My Lord is, The Supreme) in ruku’, focus on the pronoun that means my (in Rabbi). It adds that element of bonding: He is My Lord, who raised me in His care and who is nurturing me. Know the Prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam and the Companions used to be in the bowing position as long as he would be in the standing segment of salah. One companion said that he recited Al Fatiha, then Al Baqara, Ali Imran, An- Nisaa’ and Al Ma’ida, and the companion Abdullah Ibn Al Zubair was beside him, still in his ruku’! 11. Win the grand finale: your sujood. Your sujood is the ultimate symbol of complete submission to your Creator. The Prophet said: The closest that a servant is to his Lord is when he is in prostration. [Muslim] And: Prostrate much because there is no Muslim that prostrates to Allah except that Allah raises him one degree in Paradise by it and forgives for him a sin. [Ahmad] Imagine you are being raised one degree in Paradise with each sujood and a sin falls off you with each prostration. Prostrate with body, heart, and soul and taste the sweetest feeling in the world! 12. Supplicate before the tasleem. After the words of the tashahhud (sitting position at the end of prayer) and before the tasleem (saying salaam to indicate the end of prayer), there is a precious moment many waste! When the Prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam taught Abdallah ibn Mas’ood radiyallahu ‘anhu the tashahhud he said: … Then let him choose whatever supplications he wishes. [Al-Bukhaari, Muslim]. Just before you say tasleem, make at least three heartfelt dua’s to benefit from this treasure chest instead of rushing to say the salaam! |

You must have courtesy, patience, endurance, good character and forbearance. Renew your clothing regularly, have a good mount and use a lot of what is good… Offer your food to people: a miser never prevails. You should have as your confidants those you know to be the best of people. When you discern corruption, you should immediately rectify it. When you discern righteousness, you should increase your attention to it. Act on behalf of those who visit you and those who do not. Be good to those who are good to you and those who are bad to you. Adopt pardon and command the correct. Ignore what does not concern you. Leave all that will harm you. Hasten to establish people’s rights. If any of your brethren is ill, visit him yourself and send your messengers. Inquire after those who are absent. If any of them holds back from you, do not hold back from him. Show affection to people as much as possible and greet even blameworthy people… When you meet others in a gathering or join them in a Masjid and questions are discussed in a way different to your position, do not rush to disagree. If you are asked, “Tell the people what you know” say, “There is another position on it which is such-and- such and the evidence is such-and- such.” If they listen to you, they will recognise your worth and the worth of what you have. If they ask, “Whose position is that?” reply, “One of the Fuqaha.” Give everyone who frequents you some of the knowledge they are expecting. Be friendly with them and joke with them sometimes and chat with them. Love encourages people to perservere in knowledge. Feed them sometimes and fulfil their needs. Acknowledge their worth and overlook their faults. Be kind to them and tolerant of them. Do not show them annoyance or vexation. Be like one of them… Do not burden people with what they cannot do. |

An Australian drug trafficker married his girlfriend Monday on the Indonesian prison island where he is set to be executed soon, his brother said, urging the country’s president to show compassion to the newlyweds. Andrew Chan, 31, married his Indonesian girlfriend Febyanti Herewila in a ceremony on Nusakambangan Island, home to several high-security prisons, his brother Michael said. He could be put to death by firing squad as soon as Tuesday, along with seven other foreign drug convicts, after authorities at the weekend gave then formal notice of their executions. “We’ve had a special day today,” Michael Chan said as he announced the marriage after returning from a visit to Nusakambangan. “We’ve celebrated with some family and close friends. “Hopefully the president will show some compassion, some mercy, so these two young people can carry on with their lives. “It’s in the president’s hands.” Chan met his future wife several years ago when Herewila, a pastor, began helping inmates in the jail where the Australian was imprisoned. Chan and fellow Australian Myuran Sukumaran, both among the group facing imminent execution, are ringleaders of the so-called “Bali Nine” heroin-smuggling gang and were sentenced to death in 2006. Australia has mounted a diplomatic campaign to save the pair but President Joko Widodo has vowed there will be no clemency for drug traffickers on death row in Indonesia. He says the country faces an emergency due to rising narcotics use. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/04/australian-trafficker-marries-before-indonesia-execution/ |

CEO of AFRIFF, Chioma Ude, has revealed the reason Nigerian movies are yet to get much recognition from global film awards and festivals. She revealed this while speaking as a panelist at the Nigerian Entertainment Conference alongside Wunmi Obe, Femi Falodun and Theo Lawson. According to her, the major reason is because most of the movies do not have as much local language content as required to enter the Foreign Film categories at most of the world’s biggest award shows. “We need to understand what this category is about and the criteria for entry. Movies in this category are expected to have rich cultural elements which must reflect in the language, story, music and all other elements present in the film. Although, things are getting better now, as Nollywood got an invitation from the Oscars last year, and hopefully will get a slot soon. The right film must have at least 51% local language content to be accepted into the Foreign Language Film category.’ Speaking for the music industry, recording artiste, Wunmi Obe, explained that the same reason was why only the likes of Sunny Ade, Femi Kuti, Angelique Kidjo are the ones who usually get nominated for the Grammys. “These people are very African in their sounds and lyrics, and that is what is required for that category.” she said. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/04/why-nollywood-is-not-recognized-at-the-oscars-afriff-boss/ |
By Owei Lakemfa It struck like a thunderbolt from the blues. It was an unexpected goal; against the run of play. One second, Suleiman Abba was Inspector General of Police (IGP) the next, he was gone with the wind in what can be called Hurricane Jonathan. It was the second time in two weeks President Goodluck Jonathan was making unexpected moves, leaving most of us clueless. The other was declining to sign the constitutional amendments into law. The first reactions in the media were that the sack of Mr. Abba was “suspicious” a “political vendetta” and for “no justifiable reasons” So how can a president said to be “clueless” make such baffling moves, leaving the political class speechless? Not many expect the quiet Jonathan to continue asserting his mandate; some expect him to have sought the refuge of his village. One of the first reactions to the sack came from Alhaji Ibrahim Coomassie, the IGP under the Abacha and Abdulsalam military regimes. The retired cop concluded that the sack was “suspicious” because Mr. Abba is from the North. I had not realized that, and I am sure President Jonathan who picked Abba above his seniors (who were then forced to retire) had not known that Abba is from the North. Until now, I did not know that Abba was the IGP of the North which would make it “suspicious” for a President from the South to sack him. A second reason Alhaji Coomassie gave is that if the sack is linked to the general elections, President Jonathan should not have removed Abba. I concede it is the prerogative of a retired cop to engage in speculations. A third reason given by the elder Statesman is that the sack did not follow due process. I agree with him; rather than President Jonathan exercising his prerogative to appoint and fire the IGP, he should have subjected it to a national referendum. There are other commentators who have called on President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari to reject Abba’s sack. I am sure there is a lot of logic in this; the President-elect can over-rule the incumbent President! The only weakness that I see in this brilliant call, is that the constitution does not permit two presidents to govern the country simultaneously; Jonathan remains the President and Commander-In-Chief of the Republic until he hands over on May 29. After General Buhari is sworn in, he can recall and reinstate all the IGPs and military chiefs Jonathan had removed. That will be his prerogative. Just as many of us are clueless on Jonathan, so are we on Buhari. He is no messiah, but many insist he is. Buhari reminds me of the chief priest in the play, Kinjeketile by Tanzanian playwright, Ebrahim. N. Hussein, who gave birth to a word, and the word gets bigger and bigger, until it becomes far bigger than the priest himself. Alarmed by the huge expectations of his supporters, Buhari has had to tell them not to expect miracles. But many of them insist on miracles. I am sorry, but those who voted for Buhari in expectation of miracles are mistaken. The fact that the Vice President-elect is a serving pastor, does not mean Nigeria is now in in the ‘Atmosphere of Miracles’ Those who expect miracles should, in the first place have drafted Sheik Ibrahim El-Zak-zaky and Pastor Enoch Adeboye on the ballot. Surely, a Sheik Ahmad Gumi as Presidential Candidate and Pastor Temitope Joshua as running mate or vice versa, would have been an ideal ticket. Then we can have miracles on per second billing in a pay-as-you-go system. In any case, why did such people over the years, reject the candidature of my brother, Pastor Kris Okotie even when he repeatedly told Nigerians that God had revealed to him he would win those elections? Why is it now that we are demanding miracles? To show how clueless some of us can be, I hear it said all over the place that we have comparatively done very well because we have a nascent democracy. How can that be when we have been having general elections since the 1950s? We should not accept such insult. But why do so many people insist that our electoral process is still in its infancy? I can make some guess. First, twenty nine years of military rule has blinded us to the fact that we had over fifteen years of elections before the first coup in January, 1966. A second guess is that seeing long queues of children voting, such people assume that our electoral process must also be in its infancy. They fail to understand that we are so democratic, open-minded and children-friendly; that we are just catching them young. After all, these are the leaders and voters of tomorrow. I watched a report/documentary on Silver Bird Television on underage voting, and was full of commendation and admiration for the electoral staff the way they handled the children. First, realizing that these special voters, (some looking like nine or ten year olds) can be rowdy, special queues were created for them. Then card readers patiently put them through the identification process before voting. This is good for our electoral process because in the next five-eight years when these children are eligible to vote, their invaluable experience as underage voters, will give them a head start over their contemporaries. On the social media, I read a brilliant justification or argument for underage voting; it is more democratic than a single adult thumb printing scores of ballot papers. As a Nigerian, I am happy to be swept along by the flood of accolades that have poured in from the international community. The world had not expected us to pull off these elections without much violence and bloodbath. Don’t forget that the prophetic Americans had spied into the future and announced that Nigeria will break up in 2015. But here we are, united and strong. Proudly Nigerian! http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/04/clueless-on-jonathan-and-buhari/ |

A group of students were asked to list what they thought were the present "Seven Wonders of the World." Though there were some disagreements, the following received the most votes: 1. Egypt's Great Pyramids 2. Taj Mahal 3. Grand Canyon 4. Panama Canal 5. Empire State Building 6. St. Peter's Basilica 7. China's Great Wall . While gathering the votes, the teacher noted that one student had not finished her paper yet. So she asked the girl if she was having trouble with her list. The girl replied, "Yes, a little. I couldn't quite make up my mind because there were so many." The teacher said, "Well, tell us what you have, and maybe we can help." The girl hesitated, then read, "I think the 'Seven Wonders of the World' are: 1. to see 2. to hear 3. to touch 4. to taste 5. to feel 6. to laugh 7. and to love." The room was so quiet you could have heard a pin drop. The things we overlook as simple and ordinary and that we take for granted are truly wondrous!! If wealth is the secret to happiness, then the Rich should be dancing on the streets. But only Poor Kids do that. If power ensures security then top Officials should walk unguarded. But people who live on roadside feel more secure. If beauty brings ideal relationships, then celebrities should have the best marriages. But they have one of the worst relationships. Thats why... Live simply...Walk humbly Love genuinely!!! |
