BusinessRe: Nigerian Entrepreneurs Worth Admiring by bani(m): 1:04pm On Oct 25, 2006
well tribal sentiments are unavoidable in this mixture called Nigeria. But to make some things clear on each tribe i would state MY OWN views .
the YORUBAS are used to name praising and publicity, not scared of controversies and actually love the headlines and it works for them, because they actually get known and respected, thats why you would readily list them.
an IGBO man, loves to make his money without having issues, because controversies could hinder his flow of cash to his business. so he keeps a low profile and just his village people know him. thats why there are lots of God fathers in south east politics.
A HAUSA man, well its always a family business so the name overshadow the rest of the family who have achieved, but they mostly shun publicity.
a Niger delta man, most are mistaken for igbos or my Edo brothers are mistaken for yorubas, so they dont always get their full credit.
i could list lots of entrepreneurs from the south east which might sound strange to the main naija populace.
the basic point is that we have got lots of naija entrepreneurs making it and as one of the post said if u feel one of your 'brothers' name is missing out, put up your own post lets know him/her.

The Geography of a Woman:

Between the ages of 18 - 21 a woman is like Africa or Australia. She is half discovered, half wild and naturally beautiful with bushland around the fertile deltas.

Between the ages of 21 - 30 a woman is like America or Japan. Completely discovered, very well developed and open to trade especially with countries with cash or cars.

Between the ages of 30 - 35, she is like India or Spain. Very hot, relaxed and convinced of its own beauty.

Between the ages of 35 - 40 a woman is like France or Argentina. She may have been half destroyed during the war but can still be a warm and desirable place to visit.

Between the ages of 40 - 50 she is like Yugoslavia or Iraq. She lost the war and is haunted by past mistakes. Massive reconstruction is now necessary.

Between the ages of 50 - 60 she is like Russia or Canada. Very wide, quiet and the borders are practically unpatrolled but the frigid climate keeps people away.

Between the ages of 60 - 70 a woman is like England or Mongolia. With a glorious and all conquering past but alas no future.

After 70, they become Albania or Afghanistan. Everyone knows where it is, but no one wants to go there.

The Geography of a Man:

Between the ages of 15 - 70 a man is like Naija - ruled by a dick and supported by lotsa rogue dicks. (my personal opinion)

A young man goes into a pharmacy and says to the

I'm going

I may be in

The pharmacist gives him the condom and the

another condom because my girlfriend's sister is very

The pharmacist gives him a second condom and as

During dinner, the young man is sitting with his

When the dad gets there, the boy lowers his head
and starts praying, "Dear Lord, bless this dinner

A minute later the boy is still praying; "Thank

Ten minutes go by and the boy is still praying,

The others look at each other surprised and his

The boy replies, "I didn't know your dad was a

If you think that the Cobra is the most venomous snake in the world then you are mistaken, The following snake has been found to be the most venomous,

NAME: "Expecteria Trouserius" (Trouser Snake)

LOCATION: Throughout the world

DESCRIPTION: One-eyed, with mushroom-shaped head (other types come with extra layers of skin) Varying from pink to black.

Fang-less with a highly venomous spit. (Spit can reach distances up to 1-3 feet)

* Size varies from 3 to 12 inches, depending on its mood & subspecies.

SYMPTOMS: This snake attacks mainly women in the lower front abdomen, resulting in an inconspicuous bump. Then a severe swelling followed by excruciating pain after nine months. The attack is not usually fatal.

Beware: It has been known to attack men in the rear lower abdomen!

HABITAT: Usually found in bedrooms, but has been known to appear in the most unusual places.

ANTIDOTE: Various types of vaccine available for women. However, once the venom is injected into the body only drastic measures will ensure complete recovery.
There is no known antidote for men.

WHAT TO DO WHEN ATTACKED:

TOURNIQUET: Do not apply a tourniquet, as the venom is too deep in the body to be affected.

CUTTING THE WOUND: This would be completely unnecessary and ineffective as the bleeding will stop after a few weeks any how.

SUCKING THE WOUND: This method is the most popular with the victim, but so far has not been reported to have led to any success.

SEARCHING FOR ANTI-VENOM:
1. Place four fingers of the right hand around the neck of the reptile, with the thumb in the front.
2. Grip firmly and move the hand in an upwards and downwards motion.
3. This will result in the snake becoming highly aggressive, very rigid and start spitting.
4. The time taken for this milking process depends entirely on the milker and the last time the snake attacked.
5. Once milked, the snake should be harmless for about 15-20 minutes.

CONCLUSION: This snake, although it is very aggressive and active, is not necessarily a vermin, and treated with the right respect, makes a wonderful pet.

LAPTOP SECURITY

The headline "Laptop Along with Hundreds of Thousands of Identities and Information Stolen" seems to be a regular phrase these days. Whether it's an executive trusting the hotel cleaning staff, a name-brand accounting auditor storing his laptop unsecured in his car (who, by the way, would still bill his clients on an annual review for such carelessness) or an accounting staff entering a “one chance”, laptops/PDA’s and other physically insecure computers are getting lost and stolen by the truckload.
It's no longer just an inconvenience to lose a laptop. Being careless in todays overly governed society now leads to business contracts being dishonored, Accounting firms loosing confidential details, personal data been used fraudulently (Gulder Ultimate search star nude picture saga), laws being broken, and industry regulations being violated. Above all, it's putting a lot of sensitive information at risk, both trade secrets and, more importantly, personal livelihoods.
For crying out loud, why aren't people speaking out about this problem? More importantly, why aren't organizations doing anything about this problem? You want to do the right thing and keep your laptops secure? Read on.
Step 1: How it can happen
Have you ever wondered how the people finding and/or stealing these unsecured laptops and other computers are breaking into those systems and getting sensitive information? Well, I haven't interviewed any criminals, but I'd guess they have got their own tools and techniques. However basic it may seem, many people simply don't have passwords on their laptops. It doesn't take a computer engineer to crack that code, and I won't elaborate on security testing techniques and solutions for that problem. But what about those systems that do have passwords, how are the bad guys getting in?
The best way to approach this problem is to look at it from a malicious viewpoint. I'm not advocating or supporting criminal activity. I do, however, strongly believe the only way to truly secure your systems is to look at security issues from the bad guy's perspective. When it comes to laptop hacking, there are a few tests you need to run to see just how far you can get into the system and into your network.
Already logged-in with full access
A computer system can be stolen while it's still turned on. Laptops with well-charged batteries are especially convenient for the bad guys. There's no unplugging and trying to get in later, they simply take the system and run with it to another location and see what can be gotten off it. After all the Anita Hogan phone picture issue (though given willing) is a classic case of stolen information.
Once they are in, anything's fair game. Many organizations (very few in Nigeria anyway) have policies that state no sensitive information shall be stored on local hard drives or mobile devices. I see it all the time. It's usually just a matter of looking at the person's desktop to find all sorts of word processing documents, spreadsheet files and other areas containing sensitive information.
Take a look and see for yourself. You can actually do this from the network if you have remote logins enabled and you're part of the local administrators group. Look under C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersDesktop and C:Documents and SettingsusernameDesktop. You can also load up Outlook or whatever email client the victim uses to see what's stored inside. Odds are your users use email as an information repository, and it's a gold mine for sensitive information.
Think about what could happen if any of this data was accessible by a criminal. That's a good reason to use short screensaver time outs, require users to lock their screens when leaving their computer unattended or to even use proximity sensors to automatically lock the screen when the user leaves.
Guessing Passwords
The next step a would-be criminal could take is to simply guess a login or screensaver password sometimes it's easy as 1-2-3. In this scenario, let's assume the laptop is powered on and the user has locked the screen with a screensaver. The hacker could enter the user's login ID (the last logon ID is likely displayed) as the password or append a 1, exclamation point, or "pass" to the end of it. It's actually pretty common. If the screensaver password doesn't work, simply reboot the system to see how it comes up -- you might not need a password to login to Windows.
If you reboot and you're prompted with a BIOS power-on password, that's yet another layer of defense, but it's no problem to get around. There are resources galore on how to reset those.
Step 2 : How to Crack a Laptop
Find Passwords
If they're already in, hackers can look at stored passwords that may lead to other sensitive information especially those stored in VPN clients that could provide a direct link into your network. You can find this type of information using a tool such as ElcomSoft Ltd.'s Proactive System Password Recovery. It will recover logon passwords, network passwords, wireless encryption keys, dialup/VPN passwords and more that can be used against you.
Crack passwords
If you've done the right thing and require Windows logins combined with Windows-enforced strong passwords, you're probably wondering how else someone could possibly get in. Well, never fear, it can be done. It is simple password cracking, and you don't even have to buy a commercial tool to do it. There's a relatively new tool which most engineers have been using called Ophcrack that uses rainbow tables for really fast Windows password cracking. Ophcrack has a bootable "Live CD" version that you can use without having any other access to the Windows system. So, let’s picture this scenario: The bad guy finds/steals your system, boots it up using a tool such as Ophcrack and in the twinkle of an eye, he's got one or more Windows account passwords. It's all over after that. Try running the Ophcrack Live CD yourself and see what you can find.

Step 3: How to secure a laptop

There's a simple solution
Having shown you all these laptop hacking techniques and tools, you can still lock down your systems to keep bad things from happening. You could create encrypted "partitions," which, basically, are files that mount as a regular drive. But for me personally I don’t go for it nor recommend it for clients. It all boils down to the fact that you cannot trust your users to store sensitive information on the secured partition every time. People will store things on their desktop, in their email application, and in local temp directories that may not be protected. Plus, if someone is able to obtain a laptop and crack various Windows passwords as I described above, what do you think the odds are that the encrypted partition uses one of those same passwords? Based on what I see, the chances are pretty good.
Many people are installing laptop-tracking software such as LoJack for Laptops, which can certainly aid in recovery. The problem is that by the time the system is recovered, sensitive information on the laptop could've been compromised. Good solution, just a little too late in the security breach time window for me and obviously for you who cares.
The only truly secure solution (although still not 100%, nothing is) to keep information from being compromised is to use a whole disk encryption technology such as PGP Whole Disk Encryption and TrueCrypt. They are independent of the operating system and use much stronger encryption technologies and some can even be centrally managed reducing administrative burdens. Even if stolen computers are powered on, as long as the entire drive is encrypted and the screen is locked, the only option for the criminal is to reboot the system to try and get in. Once he does that, he will be prompted for a pass phrase to unlock the drive. As long as the pass phrase to encrypt the drive is strong, he is at a dead-end.
Remember that policies enforced by technologies, and not just trusting users to do the right thing, will keep sensitive information on your company’s computers from being compromised. Obviously, it's going to cost money (up front and ongoing) in both software licenses and operational costs (as our people say “soup wey sweet dey cost”). But that seems like a better alternative than losing company files, personal documents, ‘Anita Hogan pictures, credit card merchant privileges, explaining to one or more government regulatory bodies, your accounting firm/ client why your stolen systems were not protected or having to notify every single person whose information is believed to be compromised.

Step 4: Laptop security summation

All I have mentioned so far are real issues happening to real people and the problem can be avoided if you, and your management do the right things. Here are some final takeaways to keep your laptops and other stolen computers safe:
1. Look at your laptop vulnerabilities from a malicious-eye view and revisit this issue often.
2. Educate your users over and over again until it's ingrained in their minds, that thoughts like "I'm just going to run into the supermarket real quick, the laptop will be OK in the car", "I just need to step into the restroom real fast, others in the coffee shop will lookout for my stuff", “I’m driving my own car if I leave it on the back seat it cant be stolen”, and “one chance is not my portion (God has given us wisdom)”are very dangerous and can end up getting a lot of people in trouble.
3. Ensure screens are getting locked via CTRL-ALT-DEL or a short screensaver timeout.
4. Configure Windows to require passwords to be entered upon return from hibernate, suspend or a screensaver time out.
5. Most importantly, use whole disk encryption with strong passphrases.
There is always the chance that your stolen systems will be sold, new software will be reloaded, and nothing bad will ever come of it. However, you have got to look at the worst-case scenario. Given that so much information is being stored in so many different places, without whole disk encryption in place combined with sensible password and screen-locking technologies, there's not really any way to be sure everything's protected at all times. That is a risk no savvy business person should ever be willing to take.

also theres no biff on western concepts of living, but we have to take it at pace where the mindset of naija pikin developes with it, thats why we are having a serious 'condition of living' divide the masses cannot appreciate the infrastructures or ideas you are trying to build.
and not every concept from the west is ideal for us down here, we should be able to sift the chaff from the grain. we need to keep our naija identity

well i do wonder what all the hype about some foreign label , ive been a receipient of clothes and footwears from folks abroad especially uk, and i have had cos to question the quality of some of these wears with what i get in naija here. a classic case wa when my bro' got my dad a slippers from 'jand' and not wanting to be let down i got one for him from my able cobbler 'gbenga', and funny enough the 'janded slippers didnt last up to a month (it wasnt even worn dat much), while the one i gave the old man is still serving him till now so also all the ones he makes for me.
ive been aroung 'ariara' market in aba and i was stunned at the skills and knowledge the guys there have, but wrong implementation. though their excuse is due to high tarrifs and running cost by the goverment, the have to use low cost materials to make better gains. if the government could encoutage them we would have more depoartmental stores sporting naija wears.
seriously one needs to take a tour to ariara and onitsha markets to see what these guys could do , if encouraged

CYBER CAFÉ OPERATORS AND E.F.C.C .

We all started with the dream to be part of the It revolution in Nigeria and a make a living, and now with millions haven being invested we are being forced into non-existence by Government using its agencies with frivolous and hurriedly made laws and their main case internet scam/ ‘419’.

Our sin, scammers/419’ers come into our cafes to ‘‘throw job’/scam’. Yes I accept that fact, but it also has to be noted that we have a bulk of customers who come to do legit businesses online and the word scammer/’419’ is not written on anyone’s forehead or clothing for us to be able to sort one as fraudster and bar him from entering the café and also due to the law of privacy and behaviour in a public place we cannot stand behind every customer or remote view every customers system to see what he/she is doing.

The issue of EFCC arresting scammers / 419’ers is applauded, but arresting everyone in a café both innocent and guilty and confisticating the equipments of the café does not make sense, indirectly everyone is being told to stay out of the café and how would you explain you walking into a café to transact a legit business or just chat with your loved ones and you are arrested and locked up. The argument the agency (EFCC), now puts up is that the innocent ones are released, after spending a day in custody or the embarrassment? And what about scammers/’419’s’ who use home service providers via CDMA (starcomms, multilinks) or wireless access (netcomm) in their homes, do they go to these organisations to seize their equipments or arrest and harass the management/staffs.
One would see all these as Government trying to frustrate the investments of tax paying citizens to please foreign bodies. Also we could see it as the corporate internet Service Providers (bigboys) sponsoring the Government to run cybercafés out and have a field day, with people now subscribing to their services.

Intimidation and harassment by EFCC will not solve the issue or reduce the scourge. The EFCC should call all stake holders to a meeting, sit down and discuss the issue, solutions are proffered and guidelines are laid down, any cyber café which does not abide by these guidelines now has itself to blame.

And the issue of registering with EFCC, NCC though a nice concept does not solve the issue, its just another avenue to now milk our lean purses and reason for harassment. I tried registering to get a licence with the NCC about a year and a half ago and I was given a bill of about 500,000 (five hundred thousand naira), for ‘Christ sake’ how much do we make out of this business with PHCN and all other overheads, and now including registering with EFCC.
Let’s face facts, scam/419 is a problem right now, but let’s fight it with reasoning not force and gun welding policemen with a Whiteman tagging along to give the Government a good image outside, while the country still has a negative image. Because these scammers/419’ers would now go underground (still using CDMA’s and wireless connections) and be more lethal and determined, while we the café owners watch our life investments rot.

The recent violence at festac, where EFCC operatives came top raid the Net Express café on 52 road and had their buses stoned “some windows shattered”, would become a common sight, even heard it “happened at ajegunle”. If the EFCC does not involve the cyber café owners. The use of force would always lead to the reply of force, these are young men who are frustrated by the day with the economy on ground and most lazy ones amongst them would lead to violence. Judging by the crowd of supporters on that day, one wonders where the EFCC wants to lock all of them.

well you have to realise all service providers in nigeria have their hubs in other european and middle east countries. most cafes are using shiron which would point their ip addresses to isreal. i use CNC in the US with my hub at holland so definetly when tracing or viewing my ip addresses dats where you would be pointed to. to with what AfriNic is planning on doing via blos ip addressing to isp's in africa it might be easier to trace ip addresses to particular regions
PoliticsRe: What Can Honest Nigerians Do to Stop 'Nigerian Scams'? by bani(m): 11:04am On Jul 08, 2006
well everyone has his point on the issue. but do we realise the whole thing boils down to government putting the right infrastructure on ground. the basis still remains power , then you can talk of enabling policies. if there was steady light a jobless youth can sit down at home and fiddle wit his pentium 1 computer to understand it, he can save hsi money and pay for internet connection 5000 a month and do research online, a cyber cafe owner like me can drop my price down drastically and he can have an option of browsing cheap and longer to enable his research.
very few honest online job is gotten as quick as 419 is, so its more alluring to them. ive been in the business for quite a while and we always hear the same ol'story, 'wetin man go do', and when you know them from their background and their travail you tend to sympathise wit them.and the issue some one wrote and specified an ibo guy meeting him, lets not be tribal the only issue is that lotsa nigerians from all tribes are into i see them everyday, but an ibo man makes his money and becomes arrogant and flamboyant. so lets stop this tribal name callings.

well its really going to be a hard task to stop 419, ive tried getting into arguments with some fraudsters about it but they use examples of our leaders and no job as an excuse. and to an extent you cannot blame them, i was involved in an argument with an old school mate who is into it and lo and behold a teacher who once taught us passed by and he his case looked pathetic. also when u consider the money they make its quite tempting, a guy just hit 45million last week this is a guy i knew who graduated 3yrs ago and had been having it hard and he entered into it  early this year after lots of furstration.
so the argument opens up how do you eradicate the scourge of 419 with this facts?

ComputersRe: Internet Cafe Prices in Nigeria by bani(m): 10:41am On Dec 28, 2005
Right now i feel the charges of cafes are quite low considering the overheads incurred, but due to the kind of market forces (competition) and non unified cafes we have in Nigeria prices are low.
when u consider bandwidth charges of $1,080 and lubricant/fuel expense of 100k , salaries, sundry expenses one wonders how we cafe stay afloat. i normally say we are in business to keep foreign service providers afloat and keep the internet going.
