PoliticsThe Nigerian Civil War And Questions Arising...pic by bashydemy(op): 10:02pm On Aug 28, 2015
At times we ask ourselves and others many questions without finding satisfactory answers to such questions. I am also one of those who have asked such questions.

When I read about the Nigerian Civil War also called the Biafran War, two basic questions came to my mind. Before that, let’s look at a brief history of the war:

The Nigerian Civil War, also known as the Biafran War, 6 July 1967 – 15 January 1970, was a war fought to counter the secession of Biafra from Nigeria. Biafra represented nationalist aspirations of the Igbo people, whose leadership felt they could no longer coexist with the Northern-dominated federal government. The conflict resulted from political, economic, ethnic, cultural and religious tensions which preceded Britain's formal decolonization of Nigeria from 1960–1963. Immediate causes of the war in 1966 included a military coup, a counter-coup, and persecution of Igbo living in Northern Nigeria. Control over oil production in the Niger Delta played a vital strategic role.

The questions I have to this issue are:

1. If petroleum was in the North and not the South, would Ojukwu had fought for the secession of Biafra from Nigeria?

2. If petroleum was in the North and not the South, would Gowon and Northerners have fought so hard to keep Nigeria as one?

These are questions that I have not yet found satisfactory answers.

SO what's this thread all about? You want PMB to appoint just anyhow person so as to satisfy each tribe? what happen to competent and someone you can trust with a particular job... Those position as very key and sensible position that need someone you can trust and have your back in other to succeed. so carry go PMB if anything go wrong you will be blame not them as we are blaming GEJ today for the failure his cabinet.... Beside those that was appointed by GEJ are incompetent and they brought shame to his Government and the most looted tribe among them are from the South East and South South..

Nigeria inaugurates committee on establishment of national carrier

August 25, 2015Premium Times

Following President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision to establish a national airline, the permanent secretary, Ministry of Aviation, Binta Bello, on Monday inaugurated a 12-member Ministerial Committee on the establishment of a National Carrier.

A statement by the Assistant Director, Press and Public Affairs of the ministry's , James Odaudu, said the inauguration of the committee is in line with the presidential directive on establishing a national airline.
The statement quoted the permanent secretary as urging the committee to pursue the assignment with the sense of urgency it deserves.

“The establishment of a national carrier is not only justified by economic considerations, but also strategic national interest, national pride and job creation potential,” it stated.
According to the statement, the permanent secretary urged the committee to work with the Assets Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) on the debt profile of domestic airlines and make its recommendations.

The permanent secretary further charged the committee to review previous reports of consultants while examining the report on the defunct Nigeria Airways and other failed private airlines.
It advised that the committee to consult stakeholders in the aviation sector with a view to fashioning a national carrier based on the Public Private Partnership.

According to the statement, former Managing Director of Discovery Airlines, Mohammed Abdulsalam will serve as the Chairman, while the legal adviser of FAAN, Uche Isichei, will serve as secretary.

Responding, the chairman of the Committee, Mr. Abdulsalam, a captain, assured the permanent secretary that the committee would develop a robust model that would meet the aspirations of Nigerians.

The statement said the committee had four weeks within which to submit its report.
