You assume that it will eventually connect to the internet. Using an assumption that a computer will connect to the internet doesn't seem to be a robust way to program anything.

A couple years back I was rebuilding my server and needed to reinstall a piece of software that I used to use to alert me of HD temp issues. I tried to install it but when it loaded it told me the software was no longer supported and wouldn't do anything else. I knew the software still worked as I had used it on the previous server, same OS and all. I guess they had updated it and wouldn't let you reinstall the old version. But you could update from the old version. Kinda pissed as I had purchased it and it seemed shady. So, I just rolled back my system time 5 years, reinstalled using my license, made the system time current and upgraded.

Both of you are not only wrong but I can't imagine either of you being super talented at whatever you do giving the limited way you think.

And again, when the computer is powered down, where does that clock signal come from?
So, explain how "Power on Schedule" works if the computer is off. If I want the computer to wake up at 4:20pm. How does the computer wake up without a clock signal?
And you are still thinking of a clock like a clock on the wall. The RTC uses an oscillator to create the clock signal and basically count to get the time.

In the real world we use time to execute commands. It's not just to look at.
In 5 seconds, do this. etc. We can count it, feel it or look up at the clock.
The computer does as well.
On an aside, that's why we talk of processors in terms of frequency or clock speed or how many cycles it completes in a second (1/s).

Anyhow, there are still some functions a computer may want to execute when off, 1 basic one is keeping the time relatively updated so when you boot up shit will work.
Another is, you want to PC to wake up at a certain time. It needs to calculate when that time is.
If the Power is off, it can't do that.

The clock isn't just for showing you the time, but also for the computer to know when to do things.

while updating the pc, i saw the time error and figured it was his system cmos battery and i replaced it.

if you have a gaming laptop with stuff like xmp and overclocking features you enable in the bios, a bad cmos battery will mean bios resets every time you start the device.

A compter is a basic clock with instructions happening at set intervals (rising edge, falling edge, etc) based on that clock.

So? Servers update their clocks through NTP how is that too hard to comprehend. Even the router in your house or switch if you have one Use NTP to keep accurate time. Would you say they have cmos battery or RTP?

It keeps things in sync and tells events when to occur.
The computer has to know even when to go the the NTP server and get the date, something tells it that.

so if you are doing remote work and you are being tracked and your computer time is wrong - whoever is auditing you will assume you are lying as every file on your pc has a time stamp

you will also have challenges updating windows because the time on your pc does not match the time of servers

you are a small boy who has never actually worked in an office, so you dont know what happens if you send an email at 10pm wednesday while your pc says you sent it at 5pm sunday
