Did you run it live from the usb or did you install it to the harddisk?
If you did the latter, then you create a new partition with ext3 format and re install.
Aslo update the grub "sudo update grub" if still no solution, check here

I think each file has a different size, note that some files there are for different devices with different specs.
The one i'm running is android-x86-4.4-RC1 and its 294mb.

Its an iso file so you have to burn it a bootable usb device or Cd.

I'm not sure there's any side effect.
Currently have windows 8.1,
Android x86 (not the bluestack emulator),
Windows 10 technical preview and ubuntu all running on my system, and they're all running fine, atleast for the main time.

This producers never learn, the longer a series run, the less interesting and fücked up the story line seem to become.
