The naira took a fall again on Monday, as it slid to 485 against the dollar and 600 against the British pound at the parallel market.

At the official side of the market, the naira depreciated from 305 to 315 per dollar, while the pound went for N401.

This is coming at a time when the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is making special forex auction for oil exporters in the country.

With the oil prices on the rise at the global market, and Nigeria’s oil template at N285/$1, the interbank market is seen as incapable of meeting the needs of oil exporters who need forex at N285/$1 not the market’s N315/$1.

This has necessitated the CBN auction, which is expected to trade dollars below N300.

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, in an interview with Reuters, said “his office was working with the central bank to make the foreign exchange market more flexible and more reflective of actual demand and supply”.

This year has seen the local currency depreciated the most in its 43-year history, opening at 197 in January at the official market and 265 at the parallel market.

Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, says the state has become Nigeria’s most popular investment destination with over five billion US dollars investment attracted in two years.



The Governor was speaking during the opening ceremony of the Joint Trade Fair of all the Chambers of Commerce in the state tagged, “The Jubilee Fair.”

The trade fair with the theme, “to harness Anambra’s natural resources for non-oil exports as a world class trade hub”, was packaged with awareness of high standard expected of an international trade fair.

“Ndi Anambra, this trade fair could not have come at a better time. Anambra is indeed ready for the world. First, this is our 25th anniversary as a state.

“Second, Anambra is Nigeria’s safest state at the moment and thirdly, our beloved state has become Nigeria’s most popular investment destination with over five billion dollars investment attracted in two years.

“We are indeed in a better place today. Everything seems to be working in our favor. We have shaken off the dark days of violent armed robbery, kidnapping, child trafficking, and bloody shootout between rival gangs.

“We have made bold efforts to bring home our illustrious sons and daughter together on the altar of brotherhood. As a government, we know what our people expect from us and we are not relenting in our efforts to surpass the expectations of Ndi Anambra,” he said.

Hundreds Of Businesses Storm Anambra International Trade Fair

The trade fair has seen over 100 business merchants from Anambra and environs with high expectations of attracting international business brands and investors who will tap into the commercial potentials of the state and step up the export potentials of the state.

Hundreds of business pavilions have been erected at the Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square Awka, the venue for the Trade Fair.

Various products on display ranged from agriculture and forestry, food and beverage and IT and Technology industries and the Governor was again blown away by the standard of the event as organized by the coalition of the three chambers of commerce in Anambra state for the first time.

“Before now, Anambra has three separate chambers of commerce, one each from Onitsha, Nnewi and Awka. Each chamber had made efforts to run its own affairs and hold its own trade fair, but I am told that their separate effort did not make as much impact as what we are witnessing here today”, the governor said.

The governor reminded them of the breakthrough Anambra made in rice production with the production of Anambra Rice and the export of vegetables to the United Kingdom in 2016.

He insisted that the state could still make more positive statement in export business with proper coordination.

He urged all the big businesses, small and medium enterprises, entrepreneurs and all interested members of the community to participate in the trade fair and help develop the state.

Farida Waziri, a former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), says Nuhu Ribadu is enjoying the wealth of people he once labelled as corrupt.

Ribadu, pioneer chairman of EFCC, had alleged that Mike Aondoakaa, a former attorney-general of the federation; Ben Nwabueze, a senior lawyer; and Waziri were among those who frustrated the fight against corruption in the country.

But in a statement on Saturday, Waziri said Ribadu is yet to move on with his life after being removed as chairman of the commission eight years ago.

She advised Ribadu to leave her out of his frustrations and explain to Nigerians what happened to the billions of funds and assets recovered during his tenure as EFCC chairman.

“My first inclination was to ignore Nuhu Ribadu since I know he is always obsessed with dropping my name into his script anytime he needs public pity or political relevance but on a second thought I felt I should advise him to leave me out of his frustrations and face life,” the statement read.

“There should be a life after EFCC. If after eight years of being removed as EFCC Chairman, he is yet to move on with life, even after two successive Chairmen had occupied the same seat and moved on with their lives, then his problem may be psychogenic. He needs help elsewhere, certainly not from me.

“If Nuhu is yet to face the reality that EFCC is a Federal Government Agency and not a personal estate of anybody eight years after, I find it compelling to remind him, otherwise one day he would wake up to blame me for his defeat in the 2011 presidential election and even his pathetic outing in the 2015 governorship election in Adamawa state despite the slush funds deployed to ensure his victory at the polls.

“I equally suspect that Nuhu may sooner than later blame me for his penchant to jump from one party to the party like a political prostitute; from the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) to PDP and now to All Progressives Congress (APC).

“It is his lust for power, inordinate ambition and desperation for political relevance that continue to push him to dine and wine, and even enjoy the wealth of those he had labelled as corrupt in yesteryears. He can’t hold me responsible for his double face, lack of principle and complex contradictions in his character.

“There is also the need to remind Nuhu Ribadu that before he succumbs to another logorrhea, he should avail himself a copy of the investigative report on recovered assets during his tenure as EFCC Chairman and use the opportunity of the next naming ceremony or birthday party he is invited to, to explain to Nigerians what happened to billions of funds and assets recovered from suspects under him, with no records or documentation. He should be grateful to me that I cleaned his mess by creating an Assets Forfeiture Unit to put the records straight and do things rightly.

“No matter how hard Nuhu tries to obliterate my tenure with his numerous lies, the record of over 450 convictions secured during my three and a half year sojourn in EFCC remains indelible. Though I inherited about 10 high profile cases from him in 2008, we took over 75 of such high profile cases to courts, with another 1,500 low profile cases pending in courts as at my exit in November 2011.

“We initiated and commenced work on the permanent office complex of the EFCC sitting on a 5.5 hectares of land along Airport Road, Abuja, in addition to setting up offices in Maiduguri, Borno state and Ibadan, Oyo state to expand the Commission’s scope of operations. I can go on and on, on my achievements. I have decided to mention just a few for now to discourage Nuhu from claiming the credit for them when next he wants to make himself happy or seek political relevance.

“At this juncture, let me advise Nuhu Ribadu to stop being a weeping man. Garrulity does not heal frustration or depression. He may consider vying for a local government chairmanship or councillorship position to get busy so that he can stop spewing falsehood, fables and lies to seek public sympathy and political relevance.”

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) on Thursday said that Osun still recorded highest prevalence of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Nigeria with over 76.3 per cent.

Mrs Damilola Obinna, a Gender Analyst with UNFPA, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that FGM was high in the South-West in spite of the geo-political zone’s high literacy and awareness rate.

Obinna said that the statistics was arrived at after a survey was carried out by UNFPA in collaboration with UNICEF in 2015.

“After data collation and analysis, we discovered that Osun had 76.3 per cent prevalence rate, Ekiti had 71.2, Oyo, 69.7; Ebonyi, 55.6; Imo, 48.8; and Lagos, 44.8.

“There is no single benefit in the practice of female genital mutilation; yet, the practice is high even among the educated.

“Aside from the immediate risks of FGM which includes haemorrhage, infections, and death, survivors of FGM are liable to present later in their lives recurring urinary tract infections, menstrual problems, reproductive tract infections, depression, sexual dysfunction and pain, and chronic genital pain.

“They are also at risk for several adverse complications for both mother and newborn during childbirth,’’ she said.

Obinna said that in Lagos, the awareness of FGM was high but statistics showed that four out of 10 girls or women had undergone female genital mutilation.

She said that Lagos Island L.G.A. recorded the highest prevalence with 51.6 per cent while Somolu L.G.A. had the lowest prevalence with 20.9 per cent.

“We discovered that most Lagos indigenes don’t cut their girls but the people who moved into Lagos from Kwara, Osun, Oyo, Ondo, Ebonyi and some other states, moved in with their culture which includes FGM.

“These people who still practice FGM claimed that it is a social expectation that most be carried out and that it cannot be stopped,’’ she said.

Obinna urged state governments to enact laws that would prohibit FGM in their states.

She said that the states could domesticate the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act (VAPP) of 2015.

She also urged governments to organise regular enlightenment programmes involving traditional, religious and community leaders to drive the message home.

“These people are role models in the society; people listen and emulate them; so, they must be fully involved in the total eradication of FGM,’’ Obinna said. (NAN)

In a bid to put an end to the housing problem in Anambra State, Governor Willie Obiano has entered into a strategic partnership with Senator Annie Okonkwo’s Topwide Ventures to construct a new estate in Awka, writes Anayo Okolie

On assumption of office, Governor Willie Obiano promised to make Anambra State the first choice investment destination, hub of industrialisation and commercial activities by creating social and business friendly environment that would attract both foreigners and indigenes to invest in Anambra.

And since coming on board, Obiano has demonstrated seriousness in the implementation of his housing policy to ensure delivery of housing estates in the state. In order to ensure that sufficient homes are provided for low, middle and high income earners in Anambra following his promise, the state government led by Obiano in collaboration with Topwide Ventures Limited owned by Senator Annie Okonkwo recently entered into a strategic partnership to construct several homes in Awka.



The construction of the new hous­ing estate, Eagles Hill Es­tate Awka, flagged off by Obiano is estimated to gulp $3.4m which is about N1.4 billion. The project, which is in the heart of the state capital, would consist of about 98 units of flats, 42 units of an­other set of flats and 50 high rising apartments as well as various types of houses in­cluding duplexes and high rise apartments.

The estate is however, sitting on 24 hectares of land donated by Ezinano Community in Awka South Local Govern­ment Area and it is expected to be completed within 18 months. The estate, financed by Senator Annie Okonkwo, who represented Anambra Central in the 6th Senate, has provisions for a shopping complex, offices, a police post, schools and hospital.

Okonk­wo would contribute 90 per cent of the funds while the state government would contribute 10 per cent and on completion, the profit shar­ing formula would be 85 per cent for the investor, who is the investor, 10 per cent for the state government and 5 per cent for the host community.
Obiano, who ap­pealed to the youths of the community not to disrupt work on the site, said that the project would create about 2000 direct and indi­rect jobs.

He said with the take-off of the project, his adminis­tration had attracted invest­ments of about 4.8 billion dollars since assumption of office, adding that the project was the 27th he had attracted to the state.
According to him, this brings to eight, the total number of companies his administration has signed on in real estate development in the state, to build about 120,000 housing units.

The governor noted that with the adequate security of lives and property which his administration has put in place, a lot of people are now relocating to Anambra, a development that presents the challenge of inadequate housing facilities, hence the increased efforts of his administration at providing housing services for citizens.
The governor, who promised to remodel Awka, immediately after taking oath of office, said his administration will re-design and remodel Awka to meet the structural and aesthetic requirements of a 21st Century city that Anambarians can all be proud of.

According to him, “my administration shall launch Anambra into a new economic phase through what I call the four pillars of development and they include aggressive mechanised agriculture, oil and gas, trade and commerce, and industrialisation. We shall provide an enabling environment for our traders to switch from importation to manufacturing the goods they currently import to Anambra. We shall introduce e-Commerce and build ultra-modern markets and Shopping Malls and revamp existing ones with new amenities.

Anambra State, Obiano said hosts a large number of industrial clusters. “My administration will strengthen this advantage with an appropriate policy framework that will boost our indigenous capacity in this sector. This will have a direct impact on wealth creation in the state and bring down unemployment.”

Thanking Okonkwo for partnering with the state, Obiano expressed hope that the construction phase will generate economic activities that will create wealth opportunities for the people to enable them stay afloat in the face of the present economic recession.

The governor also urged other high networth Ndi Anambra to heed his administration’s call to bring their investments home, assuring them of maximum returns.

While commending the governor and the host community for their support, Senator Okonkwo, who is sponsoring the construction of the Eagles Hill Estate, expressed happiness that he was able to bring to Anambra the type of projects he had seen in other major cities in the world.

“We are delighted to partner with Anambra State Government under the dynamic leadership of Chief Willie Obiano, whose commitment to the rapid transformation of the housing sector is not in doubt. The fact that the governor’s ‘Think Home Hospitality’ is bearing the desired fruits gladdens our hearts. This is evident with the number of Anambra sons and daughters from various parts of the country indicating interest to join the governor’s vision to develop the state.”

Okonkwo said the investment could not have been possible if Governor Obiano had not created a conducive environment that favoured investments. The senator said that though Obiano had excelled in the area of security, that his greatest achievement since coming to office was the unification of Anambra people irrespective of their political affiliations.
According to him, “Obiano is a Governor that does not discriminate in the development of the state and it is what he is doing that is attracting our people from all parts of the world to come home and invest.

“With what he is doing, Anambra State will soon become a home for tourism in Nigeria and it will not take long for the state to become self sufficient in many sectors of the economy. He therefore needs the support of Anambra people to actualise his programmes.

“Though I do not belong to the same political party with Obiano, I would not hesitate to say that he has done more than any other person that had governed the state in the past,” the senator stated.
Okonkwo, however, acknowledged that Obiano’s greatest achievement is his ability to unify Ndi Anambra irrespective of party affiliations and galvanise them towards the state’s development, and assured that they were committed to executing the project within the specified time frame, pledging to continue to support the governor.

The Chairman of Anambra State Investment Promotion and Protection Agency(ANSIPPA) who is also the traditional ruler of Umuoji, HRH Igwe Cyril Enweze, on his part believe that apart from its capacity to improve housing services to the people, the project will also contribute significantly to urban development and boost the state’s capacity to IGR.

The Commissioner for Housing and Urban Renewal, Mr. Frank Offor, disclosed that housing remains a key enabler for the present administration which it has been able to attract so much investment in and his ministry will follow through for effective execution.
