Nairaland / General / Yoruba Nation Rally: Family, Friends Hold Candlelight Service For Slain Jumoke by Basoenewokoma(m): 9:21pm On Jul 23, 2021
It was a teary moment as a small group gathered at a church in Ojota on Friday, for a candlelight service for Jumoke Oyeleke, the 25-year-old salesgirl that was killed by stray bullet on July 3.

The Yoruba Nation had held a rally in Lagos on July 3, during which a stray bullet reportedly fired by the Police at the event hit Jumoke, who was working as an attendant at a nearby shop.

The small group holding the candle light comprised the family members of the deceased, who organised the procession in her honour and to demand for justice.

The deceased is survived by her distraught mother and three siblings.

Eulogies and tributes poured from attendees who spoke of Jumoke’s calm and gentle manner.

One of the speakers at the event was a human rights activist, identified as Dabira, who had stayed close to the family since the incident.

She said, “Jumoke was not a protester, Jumoke was not an activist. She was just a girl that was struggling to ensure that food was put on the table of her three siblings and her sick mom.”

A former neighbour of the deceased described Jumoke as a passionate person.

Amid tears, her younger sister, Olaitan, explained how Jumoke used to help the family financially, cook for them and see to their needs.

Jumoke’s immediate younger sister also narrated how her elder sister promised to organise a birthday party for her before her untimely demise.

Amid tears and mourning, the family and friends, holding lighted candles, rendered sorrowful songs in her remembrance.

Nairaland / General / Refinery Rehabilitation: Peterside Warns Of Deeper Financial Mess by Basoenewokoma(m): 3:11pm On Mar 29, 2021
The founder of Stanbic IBTC Bank Plc, Mr Atedo Peterside, has warned the Federal Government against plunging the country into a deeper financial mess by spending $1.5bn on the proposed rehabilitation of Port Harcourt refinery.

Atedo said on Sunday that the refinery should be sold by the Bureau of Public Enterprises.

“In 2019, PH Refinery contributed zero revenue, but incurred costs of N47bn; almost N4bn a month! Instead of ending this nightmare through a BPE core investor sale, NNPC wants to enmesh Nigeria into a deeper financial mess through $1.5bn (incl. debt) at a problem it created?” he said on his Twitter account.

The PUNCH had reported on March 19 that the Port Harcourt Refining Company generated a total revenue of N10.33bn from 2015 to 2019, but posted a loss of N229.14bn.

The refinery generated zero revenue in 2019; N1.46bn in 2018; N4.82bn in 2017; N3.37bn in 2016, and N683.52m in 2015.

It lost N50.53bn in 2019; N45.59bn in 2018; N53.77bn in 2017; N43.44bn in 2016, and N35.81bn in 2015.

Last week, the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Mallam Mele Kyari, described the recently approved rehabilitation exercise of the Port Harcourt refinery as a worthy undertaking embarked upon after diligent consideration and in strict adherence to industry best standards.

Nairaland / General / 2baba, RMD, Bakassi Emerge Judges For Naija Hood Rep by Basoenewokoma(m): 2:04pm On Mar 27, 2021
A reality television show, Naija Hood Rep, aimed at celebrating talents in different areas (hoods) of the country has unveiled popular singer, Innocent Idibia, aka 2baba; veteran actor, Richard Mofe-Damijo; comedian, Okey Bakassi; and actress, Ini Edo, as its judges.

The Chief Executive Officer of Nevada Bridge TV, Neville Sajere, who also doubles as the coordinator of the show stated that the purpose of the show was to showcase the country’s culture. He said, “I want the world to see what our cultures and values are. We are people of high morals and high standards. I also want the world to know that we are not divided; we are one people. The aim of the show is to promote our culture and values. It is about promoting everything that represents us as Nigerians. We have a lot of positive qualities that we don’t seem to talk about, and that is what we intend to achieve with the show. The winner would go home with N20m and a car, while the first runner-up would get N10m, and the second runner-up would get N5m.”

Speaking on what the judges would be looking for in contestants, RMD said, “We would be looking at the originality in all of them. I like the fact that we have never had this kind of show. I like to push the envelope a bit. One of the reasons we are doing this is to give the contestants an opportunity to speak their truth.”

Nairaland / General / Court Awards N210m Against Police In Bauchi Over Extrajudicial Killings, Torture by Basoenewokoma(m): 1:47pm On Mar 27, 2021
A Federal High Court sitting in Bauchi has awarded N210m against the Nigeria Police as compensation for torture leading to the death of two people and injury to the third person accused of stealing chickens.

The victims, Abdulwahab Bello, Ibrahim Babangida and Ibrahim Samaila, were allegedly beaten by the Divisional Police Officer of the Township Division, SP Baba Ali, on July 21, 2020, over alleged theft of chickens belonging to a retired police officer.

The torture led to the death of Samaila and Babangida while Bello survived with life-threatening injuries. The survivor then slammed three separate suits demanding N150m damages each for himself and his two friends from the police.

The defendants in the suit included the DPO, 1st defendant; one Sergeant Jibril Mohammed, 2nd defendant; Inspector-General of Police, 3rd defendant; Commissioner of Police, Bauchi State, 4th defendant; and the Police Service Commission, 5th defendant.

Delivering the three judgments separately against the respondents on Friday, the presiding judge, Justice Hassan Dikko, said the action of the police against the three accused amounted to an infringement on their fundamental human rights as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

He declared that the actions of the respondents against the three accused were “callous, cruel and uncivilised.”

He therefore awarded N100m each to the biological mothers of the two deceased and N10m to the mother of the survivor as compensation and general damages, with 10 per cent interest rate per annum until the total amounts were fully paid.

Delivering judgment, Dikko said, “The killing of Ibrahim Babangida on 23rd day July, 2020 whose death was as a result of his beating up by the 1st respondent on the 17th day of July, 2020, acting under the supervision of the 3rd and 4th respondents for no justifiable reason, constitute extra-judicial killing and is violent deprivation of his fundamental right to life as guaranteed by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) and in article 3 and 5 of the African Charter on human rights and dignity, is illegal.

“I hereby, order the payment of compensation in the sum of N100m only against the respondents jointly and severally to Hafsatu Babangida being the biological mother of late Ibrahim Babangida, now deceased as general damages.”

In an interview with journalists shortly after the ruling, counsel for the three applicants, Muktar Usman, said they filed three separate applications for the enforcement of fundamental rights of the three different citizens of Nigeria.
Politics / Ortom Suspends Benue Chief Over Widow’s Killing by Basoenewokoma(m): 1:35pm On Mar 27, 2021
Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has suspended a traditional chief, Ortar Agwa Kwahar in the Buruku Local Government Area of the state.

The governor, according to a statement made available to journalists on Saturday by the State Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Ngunan Adingi, hinged the suspension to crisis in Mbatyough Council Ward, Mbagen in the council area which led to the burning down of a widow, Shaade Nyihemba.

Recall that the widow who was a nurse was burnt down when some arsonists set her house on fire few weeks ago and her death raised suspicion among residents in the community.

Ortom held a meeting with the traditional rulers and elders from the area on Friday and directed the suspension of the traditional chief to pave the way for investigation into his (the chief’s) role in the crisis in his domain.

According to the statement by the Commissioner, “Governor Ortom condemned the gruesome manner that a widow, Mrs Shaade Nyihemba was murdered by unknown criminals and ordered that full investigation be carried out by the Police and DSS to find out those behind the dastardly act for prosecution.

“The Governor directed that Zaki Ortar Agwa Mnyange Kwahar be suspended according to Section 30 of the Benue State Chieftaincy Law, to pave way for investigation into his role in the crisis at Mbatyough, Mbagen Council Ward when he should be promoting peace.”

The statement further said that the governor ordered that all youth groups in Yemakem were banned with immediate effect.

“All activities of Yamakem youth association were also suspended indefinitely,” the statement added.

The governor also warned against floating of parallel vigilante groups in the council wards and emphasised that anyone found hosting such groups would be sanctioned.

Ortom warned Benue Livestock Guards to restrict their operations within the mandate of the outfit which is primarily about preventing open grazing and rustling of animals.

He warned that any member of the Livestock Guards found operating outside the stipulated mandate would be expelled from the organisation.
