The Republic of Congo on Sunday headed into a presidential election boycotted by the main opposition and attacked by critics as tilted towards veteran leader Denis Sassou Nguesso. The 77-year-old is widely expected to win against six contenders, led by economist and 2016 presidential runner-up Guy-Brice Parfait Kolelas, who revealed Saturday that he is gravely ill. Sassou Nguesso, a former paratrooper, first rose to power in 1979 and has since accumulated 36 years in office, making him one of the world’s longest-serving leaders. He is hoping for a first-round victory to secure a fourth term running the central African oil exporter. Meanwhile challenger Kolelas posted a video message online showing himself in a sickbed, declaring he was “battling against death” after taking off a respiratory mask. “Rise up as one person… I’m fighting on my deathbed, you too fight for your change,” he urged supporters, saying the election was “about the future of your children” before replacing his mask. Kolelas’ campaign did not say what illness had struck the 60-year-old, although his team said he could be transferred for treatment abroad even as voting takes place Sunday. The runner-up in 2016’s presidential election, Kolelas is the only major candidate remaining to face Nguesso. – Doubts and boycotts – Congo’s Catholic Church episcopal conference has already expressed “serious reservations” about the ballot’s transparency and fears a possible internet shutdown on Sunday, as in the 2016 election. The largest opposition group, the Pan-African Union for Social Democracy or UPADS, is boycotting the poll. UPADS — the group of former president Pascal Lissouba, who died in France last August — is the only opposition party to have a parliamentary group in the current national assembly. Flanked by its giant neighbour the Democratic Republic of Congo and Gabon, the former French colony has oil reserves and most of its budget comes from petroleum revenue. But its economy is in a slump, hurt by a collapse in world crude oil prices, long-standing debt, and the pandemic, as well as being saddled with a reputation for corruption. On the campaign trail, Sassou Nguesso has focussed on agricultural development and portrayed himself as a defender of Congo’s youth — the average age of the population of five million is just 19, according to UN figures. After first coming to power in 1979, Sassou Nguesso was forced to introduce multi-party elections in 1991 and was defeated at the ballot box a year later. But he returned to power in 1997 following a prolonged civil war. He has won every election since, which the opposition have mostly slammed as fraudulent. A constitutional amendment in 2015, which ended a ban on presidential candidates aged over 70 and scrapped a two-term limit, allowed Sassou Nguesso to run again a year later. Two rivals who contested the 2016 results — former army general Jean-Marie Michel Mokoko and ex-minister Andre Okombi Salissa — were later jailed for 20 years, effectively sidelining the opposition. |
The Department of Petroleum Resources on Thursday announced that it generated over N2tn for the Federal Government in 2020, as its Abuja zonal office sealed up 11 filling stations for shortchanging motorists. In his virtual keynote address at the 2021 Society of Petroleum Engineers Oloibiri Lecture Series and Energy Forum in Abuja, the Director, DPR, Auwalu Sarki, said the department had repeatedly exceeded its revenue target. He said, “The DPR takes seriously its mandate to optimise revenues for government, serve as adviser to government on petroleum matters and implement applicable policy direction. “DPR, for instance, continues to exceed government revenue target by embracing systems and processes that ensure transparency and accountability in oil and gas revenue generation, computation, collection, reconciliation and legacy debt recovery. “Last year alone, we generated over N2tn for this country and we intend to exceed that value in this year.” He noted that the agency’s commitment to exceed last year’s N2tn remittance was despite the challenges encountered in the sector locally and internationally. “All these are anchored on core principles of operational excellence that allows full flow of value to government,” Sarki stated. In another development, DPR’s Zonal Operations Controller, Abuja, Mr Abubakar Buba, has led a team on an enforcement drive against erring filling stations within and around Abuja. Buba told journalists that within the space of 24 hours, the agency sealed at least 11 filling stations for dispensing petrol above the regulated price, manipulating their meters and diverting the commodity. He said there had been no increase in petrol price, adding that the DPR would strive to halt hoarding, diversion, adulteration and under-dispensing of products. “As is part of our regular exercise, the DPR will continue to intensify its surveillance activities on all retail outlets within the zone and violators will be sanctioned accordingly,” Buba stated. |
US President Joe Biden on Friday lost his footing and tripped multiple times while walking up the steps to Air Force One. The American leader, 78, had proceeded swiftly about halfway up the airstairs to the presidential jet when he stumbled. Holding on to the railing with his right hand, he attempted a quick recovery but tripped again, this time dropping to his knee. Biden stood up, paused and brushed his left pant leg before he headed up to the top of the airstairs, turned and saluted, and then entered the aircraft. Air Force One took off shortly afterwards from outside the capital Washington for a flight to Atlanta, where Biden was to meet members of the Asian-American community which has been shocked by a series of shootings in massage parlors. “He is doing fine. He is doing just great,” deputy press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters about Biden’s stumble. Biden, the oldest president ever to take office, made a point of hustling to his appearances while on the campaign trail. Last year he was routinely seen jogging up steps to a stage or towards a podium. |
A farmer in the Ibaayin village, Elekuru-Olorisaoko axis of the Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State, Mrs Olajumoke Awosika, has narrated how herdsmen terrorised farmers in the area. In an exclusive interview with The PUNCH, the farmer said it was ironical that Yoruba landowners in the village sold over 200 acres to a Fulani herder who, alongside his battalion, have unleashed unimaginable terror and horror on farmers in the area within the last few months since the beginning of the activism of popular Yoruba rights campaigner, Sunday Adeyemo also known as Sunday Igboho. The 57-year-old caterer, who returned to Nigeria from the United States in 2010, said she started organic farming five years ago after she couldn’t get some fresh farm produce in the market for her catering business. READ ALSO: Doctors threaten strike, say FG not paying dead members’ insurance Awosika said she invested millions of naira on tens of acres in Ibaayin where she planted palm, turmeric, ginger, cassava, pepper, tomatoes, plantain, amongst others. Speaking with The PUNCH, the US returnee lamented that the criminal activities of herdsmen have disrupted farming operations in the rustic village. She said, “The first day they (herders) entered, they destroyed farms. This was on February 10, 2021. As soon as they (herdsmen) entered, they went into people’s farm, harvested their plantains for their cows and uprooted cassava on their farms. Those are farms around me. These are old men, people in their 60s, 70s and the herdsmen destroyed on a massive scale. They ate the crops, marched their cows to the two main rivers in the village, very clear and clean water that the villagers drink, the herders destroyed the water completely; their cows defecated and polluted the water.” Awosika said the villagers had a meeting and traced the tracks of the cows and discovered that they were owned by a Fulani herder who owns over 200 acres of land in the village. ALSO READ: Tanzania swears in first female president after Magufuli’s death She said the villagers told the herder to ranch his cows on his expansive land but he would rather prefer the cattle to enter other people’s farmlands to graze. “Some villagers around us sold this Fulani man 200 acres. They know he is a cow herder yet they sold the land to him. With 200 acres, can you tell me there is nothing for those cows to eat? But they have to come outside to destroy people’s farms, of course, it was just sheer wickedness,” she said. The US returnee said the matter was reported to security agencies like the Nigeria Police Force and the Amotekun Corps in Oyo State but the herders only grew brazen and cruel in their unlawful activities which have led to the death of scores of farmers in the rustic agrarian village. basoenewokoma1@gmail.com |
THE family of late Chima Ikwunado, an auto-mechanic, who was tortured to death while in custody of the Eagle Crack Team of the Nigeria Police, Mile One Police Station, Port Harcourt, said the police had ask them to pick the remains of the late victim from the mortuary for burial. Elder brother of the deceased, Mr. Anthony Ikwunado, disclosed this at a joint media briefing with members of the Civil Society in Port Harcourt on Thursday. READ ALSO: Doctors threaten strike, say FG not paying dead members’ insurance Anthony further said the police was asking the family to bear the burden of the mortuary bills, which runs from December 2019 till date. He wondered why the police would ask the family to pay the mortuary bills when his late brother was tortured to death and his remains deposited in the mortuary without the knowledge of the family. Anthony noted that their father’s health had deteriorated since death of his sibling, as well as caused untold pain to the family. “The police have refused to pay the mortuary bill of my late younger brother. They (Police) killed him and took him to the mortuary without our knowledge, now they want us to go and pay the mortuary bills. ALSO READ: Tanzania swears in first female president after Magufuli’s death “The police have refused to release the autopsy result and the test result. So, we are saying that the burden of paying the mortuary bills should not be upon us, the bereaved family, but on them (police),” he added. Also speaking, a surviving friend of the victim, who was detained and tortured alongside late Chima, all known as the Ikoku five, Ifeanyichukwu Onyekwere, insisted on justice and wondered why the state government had not made any comment on the matter nearly two years since it occurred. “We need justice and we need the court to give us justice. The government is not helping matters; up till now, the Rivers State Governor has not said anything concerning this matter. The frustration has been too much,” he stated. I don't know what the adage says about female child but my own thinking is female child is equal to treasures and male child is equal to fame's. any time I heard when husband is leaving home because the woman give birth to female child instead of male child first I laugh because they don't actually know the real meaning of female and male child. one day I came encounter with one famous and wealthy air force official whose I invent one of my automatic change over switch and remote and mode sensitive lamp control for, and I also took with me my two daughters , the man he has children but the first and second child was female. I sat me down and said to me " son? (1) male child are your memory (2) male child are your documents (3) male child are your duplicates (5) male child are your voice e.t.c so with what I've noticed and witness myself I going to tell you that you are lucky. in the end he said male children are your strong bones that ever stands to represent you as real you. and that is why blessings before inheritance for you can't inherit where there is no blessings nor curse. |

A former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Bode George, says the ship of Lagos has been going in the wrong direction since All Progressives Congress chieftain, Bola Tinubu, took over control of the state. George spoke in an exclusive interview with The PUNCH on Saturday in reaction to comments by Tinubu that the ship of Lagos was heading in a wrong direction within 2017-2018 before incumbent Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. Tinubu had made the comments on Friday during the inauguration of the 1.4 kilometre-long Agege-Pen Cinema Bridge. The former Lagos governor between 1999 and 2007 had said, “Sometime in 2017-2018, the ship of this state seemed to have headed in a very wrong direction. History had it that we came together, an election came and we chose a democratically-elected government of the people, our people, and for the people. They say ‘who is Babajide Sanwo-Olu’? We said, ‘you will find out’. “Ever since Babajide became the captain of the ship of our state, he has turned it round to the right direction of progress, development, and good leadership quality.” However, speaking on Saturday, George said, “The ship of Lagos has been going in the wrong direction since he (Tinubu) ascended the throne of Lagos. Friday Olokor and Adelani Adepegba The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Friday defended the allegation that its former acting Chairman, Ibrahim Magu, misappropriated 222 properties worth N1.63tn recovered by the Abdulrasheed Maina-led Pension Reformed Task Team. Counsel for the EFCC, Mohammed Abubakar, said the allegation made by one Ngozika Ihuoma could not be proved. Ihuoma, who is the first defence witness in the trial of Maina for N2bn fraud, had made the allegation during his testimony in Maina’s defence before the court. Ihuoma had told the court on Thursday that the properties were handed over to the EFCC and sold by Magu to his friends and associates. The witness said a petition written to the Attorney General of the Federation led to the setting up of the Ayo Salami-led judicial commission of inquiry which probed Magu for allegation of corruption and abuse of office. Ihuoma had said, “Magu admitted before Salami that he shared and allocated most of these properties to most of his friends, associates, colleagues under some presidential directives but failed to make available to the commission the evidence of that presidential directives.” However, during cross-examination by the EFCC counsel on Friday, the witness admitted that no document to prove the allegation against Magu was brought before the court. “Did you tender in court the purported petition to the AGF against Magu and the EFCC that led to the setting up of the Ayo Salami panel? You did not tender proof that Magu confessed to the allegations. You said that the report of the Ayo Salami panel indicted Magu but did not tender the said report submitted to President Muhammadu Buhari about the activities of the panel,” Basoene wokoma said. Maina is standing trial for allegedly laundering money to the tune of N2bn. Meanwhile, the new Chairman of the EFCC, Abdulrasheed Bawa, on Friday, said the agency would create an intelligence directorate to steer it towards proactive and intelligence-led investigation. Bawa said he would fight corruption and not corrupt persons. According to a statement by the EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, titled, ‘Bawa assumes office, says fight against corruption will be intelligence-driven,’ the anti-graft commission’s chairman said the new directorate would ensure a proactive response to the fight against corruption. He said, “We are going to digitalise our processes and we are going to create a new full-pledged directorate of intelligence to enable us gather intelligence so that we will be proactive in our fight against economic and financial crimes; and by so doing, we will also provide the government with necessary quality advice that will lead to good governance.” |
The naira suffered more setbacks as it exchanged to the dollars at 480/$ at the parallel market on Friday. In mid February, it had exchanged at 473/$ at the parallel market. At the Investors & Exporters forex window, it reached a high of 415/$ on Friday. Recently, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr Godwin Emefiele, said the naira depreciated at the official market to 410 against the dollar. Emefiele, who spoke at a summit on the economy by Bank CEOs in Lagos recently, said the drop in crude oil earnings and the associated reduction in foreign portfolio inflows significantly affected the supply of foreign exchange into Nigeria. “In order to adjust for the decrease in supply of foreign exchange, the naira depreciated at the official window from 305/$ to 360/$ and now hovers around 410/$,” he said. Figures obtained from the CBN showed that external reserves dropped by $1.1bn in February. The reserves which stood at $36.19bn as of February 1 fell to $35.09bn as of February 26. Emefiele said Nigeria’s external reserves at $35bn was sufficient to finance the country’s seven months’ imports. He said, “With the decline in our foreign exchange earnings and subsequent adjustments in the value of the naira vis-à-vis the dollar, the CBN has continued to implement a demand management framework, which is designed to support improved production of items that can be produced in Nigeria, and further conservation of our external reserves. “These measures have helped to prevent a significant decline in our reserves. “Our external reserves currently stand at over $35bn and is sufficient to cover more than seven months of import of goods and services, even though the international rule of thumb is for reserves to cover about three months of imports.” |

The police in Ekiti State said on Wednesday that they were intensifying efforts on the search for the Chinese national abducted at Igbemo Ekiti in the Irepodun Ifelodun Council area of the state. The expatriate, who was said to be one of the experts supervising the construction of Ilupeju-Ire-Igbemo-Ijan Road, was said to have been adbucted at Igbemo Ekiti while driving in a van and forcibly taken away by gunmen. The Police Public Relations Officer, Ekiti Command, Sunday Abutu, who said the whereabouts of the victim had not been ascertained, said operatives of Rapid Response Squad led by Marcus Ogundola had since Tuesday launched a manhunt for the kidnappers. Abutu said, “Our RRS men swung into action immediately the news was broken on Tuesday. They are combing all the surrounding bushes. We are sure that the abductee will be released soon.” This was as a combined team of police and operatives of the Department of State Services arrested four men in Navy uniforms who posed as operatives of the proscribed Nigerian Merchant Naval Corps during their visit to the office of the Chairman of Irepodun/ Ifelodun Local Government, Shina Ogunleye, at Igede Ekiti. Ogunleye, who said the arrest followed his information to the security operatives, said he suspected the men were on a kidnap mission. He said, “Before they came to my office, they had earlier called and with the way they spoke, I suspected a foul play and I had to inform some higher security officials in the state who tutored me on what to do. “I gave them an appointment for 9am on Tuesday. On their arrival, I immediately contacted the State Director of DSS and the Police Area Commander in charge of Ido/Osi and Irepodun Ifelodun Local Governments. “I arrived at the office around 10am and as I was entering my office, they wanted to follow me, but they were prevented from gaining entry until the DSS and police operatives numbering 20 arrived at the scene. “The security asked them some questions, but they could not provide appropriate answers. It was then we realised that they were fake officers and that they came for a sinister mission. They had been arrested and taken to the police headquarters for further questioning.” Abutu, who said the police had begun investigation into the matter of the four suspects, said they would be charged to court on completion of investigation, adding that preliminary probe had shown impersonation. The police spokesperson said, “The suspects said they were in Ekiti to set up a base of their security outfit in Igede Ekiti. This is a breach of the law as the body they claimed to represent had been disbanded and proscribed by the Federal Government”. |
The Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, has said that $2 million and N17 million were stolen when youths attacked his palace on October 21, 2020. Youths had attacked buildings in Lagos State a day after soldiers opened live ammunition on #EndSARS protesters at the Lekki toll plaza on October 20, 2020. One of the buildings attacked by the youths on Wednesday, October 21, 2021, is the Palace of the Oba of Lagos located at Iga Idugaran, Lagos Island, where they vandalised vehicles and carted away several artefacts. They also went away with the staff of office commonly referred to as ‘Opa Ase’ and plundered the palace for two days. Akiolu, who spoke on Wednesday during the commissioning of the Glover Hall Memorial in Lagos, said he had avoided counting losses from the attack in public. The monarch, while lamenting that Lagos suffered “huge” destruction, said those who attacked his palace were ignorant of the implication of what they did. He also appealed to the Federal Government to assist Lagos to recover from the destruction, saying the state suffered from the aftermath of the #EndSARS protest than any other states in the country. He said, “I will support anything that will move Lagos forward. I have appealed to the Federal Government to assist Lagos with what we have suffered. The incident that happened here from October 20th to 23rd is so saddening. “The destruction we suffered in Lagos is so enormous than in any other part of the country. “Many buildings were burnt, including vehicles used to generate income. I can now say publicly that they stole away from my palace $2 million and N17 million. “Those who committed the offence would not have done that if they knew the implication. But as a father, I won’t place any curse on them.” After the attack on Akiolu’s palace, some soldiers whisked the septuagenarian away. The monarch returned to his palace over two months after he escaped from the attack on his palace. Lagos Island, which was one of the most affected local governments during the protests, witnessed the burning of police stations and the family home of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. |

Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Paulinus Nsirim, has said that the multiple flyovers that the state government was erecting in Port Harcourt will ease traffic flow and attract investors to the state. Nsirim spoke at a post State Executive Council press conference where he disclosed that government has awarded contracts for the construction of two new flyovers in Port Harcourt. The commissioner said the approval for the two additional flyovers has given impetus to the urban renewal programme of the Nyesom Wike administration. He said, “His excellency is the architect of the New Rivers Vision. He is unrelenting in designing these projects that will make Rivers State the destination of choice by putting the right infrastructure is put in place for our people and those who live and do business here. “The Governor of Rivers state is desirous to make Rivers State a model of development, of infrastructure and economic prosperity. And today’s landmark decision by the state executive council underscores that point. That Rivers State is investors’ destination of choice.” He disclosed that from March 1st, the State government will commence another phase of commissioning of more projects that cut across road infrastructure, health, sport and education. The two new flyovers will cost the state government N12.4 billion. One of them at the Olu Obasanjo Road intersection on Aba Road will be 800 metres, while the second on the Olu Obasanjo Road intersection on Ikwerre Rioad will be one kilometer long. According to the Commissioner for Works, Elloka Tasie-Amadi, the contrcats for the two flyovers were awarded to Julius Berger Nigeria PLC. Tasie-Amadi said it is already observed that the flow of vehicles from the soon to be completed GRA flyover and the Rebisi flyover get into lock jams at the Waterlines Junction on Port Harcourt -Aba Expressway, but the flyover will be a solution. He said, “At the Port Harcourt Aba Expressway intersection (Waterlines Junction) of Olu-Obasanjo Road, we observed that with the construction of Rebisi Flyover and the soon to be completed GRA flyover and Rumuola flyover, you’ll have a lot of traffic between those two points. Our Governor Mr Project has already vowed to complete the Trans Kalabari Road before 2022 welcome development . “Consequently we will have a bottleneck at that junction of Port Harcourt Aba Road Expressway and Olu-Obasanjo Road which we call Waterlines junction. So we proposed that to take care of that problem. “This is aside from the fact that we have a lot of urban migration and higher vehicular activities in Port Harcourt. Also trans Kalabari road is about to get award,; “For the flyover that will be located at the intersection of Olu-Obasanjo Road, Ikwerre Road and Azikiwe Street, we also observed that the reconstruction going on Ikwerre Road and the higher number of vehicles and traffic jams observed over the years will get worse. So we thought it wise to construct a flyover now.” does flyover really attract investors? drop your opinion |
The Department of State Services has claimed that its operatives did not make an attempt to arrest Yoruba rights activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, on Friday. The denial is coming a few hours after reports that a joint team of policemen and the Department of State Services attempted to arrest Sunday Igboho along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. DSS made the denial in a statement by its Public Relations Officer, National Headquarters, Abuja, Dr Peter Afunanya, titled, ‘DSS did not attempt to arrest Sunday Igboho’. READ ALSO: Sunday Igboho’s arrest will heighten tension, insecurity —Afenifere In a viral video, Igboho, who was not putting on any top, had dared security operatives to “do their worst” before they drove off. However, DSS in the terse statement did not give details of security operatives’ encounter with Sunday Igboho on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. “The Department of State Services wishes to refute the news that it attempted to arrest one Sunday Igboho, today, at Ibadan, Oyo State. The said news is misinforming and should be taken as fake and therefore be disregarded,” the statement read. A former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, had earlier issued a statement that Igboho was on his way to meet with 93-year-old Afenifere Chieftain, Ayo Adebanjo, when the incident occurred. The statement read in part, “I just spoke to my brother Sunday Igboho. He told me there was a violent attempt to arrest him this afternoon by a joint team of soldiers, DSS operatives and policemen numbering about 40 on the Ibadan/Lagos Expressway whilst he was on his way to see Baba Ayo Adebanjo in Lagos. If the security agencies want to see him all they need to do is to invite him to their office. Published The Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr Godwin Emefiele, has said the decision taken by the bank to prohibit deposit money banks, non-banking institutions, and other financial institutions from enabling cryptocurrency tradings and dealings was in the best interest of Nigerians. Emefiele said this while briefing a joint Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions; ICT and Cybercrime; and Capital Market, on the directive. He said the use of cryptocurrency by unregulated and unlicensed entities contravened an existing law and makes it contrary to the bank’s mandate enshrined in CBN Act(2007). READ ALSO: NGF considers talks with bandits, others Vanguard reported that Emefiele, who also differentiated between digital currencies, which Central Banks can issue and cryptocurrencies issued by unknown and unregulated entities, stressed that the anonymity, obscurity, and concealment of cryptocurrencies made it suitable for those who indulge in illegal activities such as money laundering, terrorism financing, purchase of small arms and light weapons and tax evasion. Citing instances of investigated criminal activities that had been linked to cryptocurrencies, he stated that the legitimacy of money and the safety of Nigeria’s financial system was central to the mandate of the CBN, even as he declared that “Cryptocurrency is not legitimate money” because it is not created or backed by any Central Bank. “Cryptocurrency has no place in our monetary system at this time and cryptocurrency transactions should not be carried out through the Nigerian banking system,” he added. READ ALSO: Na’aba, Falana, Agbakoba, others set December date for people’s constitution Mr Emefiele also emphasized that the Bank’s actions were not in any way, shape or form inimical to the development of FinTech or a technology-driven payment system. On the contrary, he noted that the Nigerian payment system had evolved significantly over the past decade, surpassing those of many of its counterparts in emerging, frontier and advanced economies boosted by reforms driven by the CBN. While urging that the issue of cryptocurrency be treated with caution, the CBN Governor assured that the Bank would continue its surveillance and deeper understanding of the digital space, stressing that the ultimate goal of the CBN was to do all within its regulatory powers to educate Nigerians on emerging financial risks and protect our financial system from the activities of currency speculators, money launderers, and international fraudsters. Also speaking, the Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Mr Lamido Yuguda clarified that there was no policy contradiction between the CBN directive and the pronouncements made by the SEC on the subject of cryptocurrencies in Nigeria. Yuguda further disclosed that following the CBN directive, the SEC had put on hold the admittance of all persons affected by CBN circular into its proposed regulatory incubatory framework in order to ensure that only operators that are in full compliance with extant laws and regulations are admitted into the framework for regulating digital assets. Similarly, the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Professor Bolaji Owasanoye highlighted the risks inherent in investing in virtual assets and cryptocurrencies in Nigeria. He explained that cryptocurrencies posed serious legal and law enforcement risks for Nigeria due to its opaque nature and illicit financial flows, adding that the current move by the Federal Government to link National Identification Numbers with SIM cards attested to the fact that terrorists, kidnappers, bandits, and perpetrators in illegal acts had relied on the shield provided by anonymity to commit heinous crimes. Earlier in his welcome remarks, the Chairman of the Joint Senate Committee, and Chairman, Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions, Senator Uba Sani, said the committee was on a fact-finding mission and had no preemptive recommendation or stand and would make its position known only after it had reviewed the submissions made by stakeholders. |
The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, Bauchi State, has accused the Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, of being the author of crises affecting Fulani people in the country. The state Chairman of MACBAN, Sadiq Ahmed, who stated this at a press conference on Tuesday at the Nigeria Union of Journalists’ secretariat, also berated the Ekiti and Oyo State governors for the quit notices they issued to herders in their states. He said, “The statements made by these leaders are a clear proof that the unity of Nigeria is at stake and can only be solved when the governors of Benue, Ekiti and Oyo states are sanctioned without further delay, especially the governor of Benue State. “We will continue to educate our members to be law-abiding citizens, but we will lawfully reject any attempt by a group of tribes, who are minority in Nigeria, trying to control and instigate violence in a united country.” He faulted Ortom for calling the Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, a terrorist and described his statement as one made by someone who got into power by chance. “It was governor Ortom, who publicly announced that nomads should move down to Bauchi and carry out their criminality, which implies that all Fulani nomads or herdsmen are criminals.” YOU MAY ALSO LIKE: 22-year-old lady needs N10m for kidney transplant Similarly, the Deputy Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Danlami Kawule, faulted Ortom’s statement that Mohammed was a terrorist. Traders and shop owners whose goods and property were destroyed in a fire outbreak at the Bishop Okoye Street market in Mile Three axis of Port Harcourt, Rivers State have appealed to Governor Nyesom Wike for support. Similarly, a separate fire outbreak left scores of residents at the Chief Odum axis of Ogunabali in Port Harcourt were homeless as makeshift houses were destroyed. The two fire outbreaks which occurred on Friday destroyed goods and property worth millions of Naira, as over ten shops and warehouses were destroyed, while over 20 makeshift buildings were razed in the Ogunabali fire, with those affected calling on the state government for assistance. Our correspondent who went to the Bishop Okoye street market reports that bags of foodstuffs such as rice, beans, garri, and drinks were lost to the fire, as some of the victims were seen trying to gather some remnants. Eyewitnesses said apart from the goods lost to the fire, hoodlums took advantage of the situation to break into some locked shops and carted away items, including cash. Though the course of the fire could not be ascertained, eyewitnesses said they suspect that a woman who lived in one of the shops left something she was cooking unattended. The eyewitnesses said the fire lasted for over five hours, saying the Rivers State Fire Service responded early but did not have enough water in their truck, as youths in the area also got water to help in putting out the fire just past midnight. Speaking on the incident, Chairman of Bishop Okoye Shop Owners, Uche Okeke, decried the level of looting by the hoodlums. “The crowd here was excess. 80 per cent of people here are not traders, some of them are hoodlums. They only came to break into peoples’ shops, stealing their goods. The fire was something that was mysterious,” he said. Asked the number of shops burnt, he said, “We have not taken stock of the number. But I can tell you that all the warehouses in Bishop Okoye Street foodstuff market have been burnt down. “The foodstuffs burnt are Rice, beans, garri, groundnut oil, flour and drinks were affected. Because of the looting, the Divisional Police Officer in Mile Three was here with his men and was calling for back up because of the crowd, but they didn’t come to assist him and because of that we have a lot of losses. “The Rivers State Fire Service came, but if they had come earlier, the fire would have been stopped in one hour. Even when they came, they didn’t have enough water. We were here till past midnight. “Some boys were here helping to stop the fire, others were here breaking into shops, even the ones that were not affected by the fire.” One of the victims, Elder Kenan Lucky, said he lost over one thousand eight hundred bags of cement as his shop was completely burnt. “I have about three trucks load of items here, but you can see they are all gone. What can I say, I will appreciate it if our governor can assist us financially and also help rebuild this place for us. Some bad boys went and break my other shop that was not affected in the fire and took away all the money in the safe, “he stated in an emotion-laden voice. Efforts to reach the spokesman for the State Police Command, Nnamdi Omoni, were unsuccessful as he did not answer calls put across to him by our correspondent as of the time of filing this report. Meanwhile, some policemen on patrol arrested a man whom they said was identified as one of the suspects who looted items during the inferno. |
The Senator representing Ondo South Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Nicholas Tofowomo, has said the herdsmen were still operating in the Ondo forests reserve because Governor Rotimi Akeredolu’s eviction order was not backed by law. The governor had last month issued a quit notice to herdsmen who are hibernating in the state forests reserve to perpetrate criminal activities, especially kidnappings. But speaking with our correspondent in an interview in Abuja on Friday, Tofowomo said Akeredolu’s eviction order was not effective because it was a mere pronouncement, not backed by law. [READ ALSO] Paternity scandal: Shina Peter vows to take care of Funmi Martins’ son He said, “When the governor gave the directive, my thinking was that he would back it up with an executive bill to the Ondo State House of Assembly. “It is his duty as the Chief Security Officer of the state. If a law is passed in that regard, police would enforce it. “Now, he also gave an order not backed by law because there is no structure on the ground that could make the police carry out the order. “When structures are on the ground, people will know that you are serious. We have problems of insecurity in Nigeria because the Nigeria Police has failed. They are just like security guards. They have no vehicles to go to the bush. “Many state governors collect between N500m and N700m every month as security vote but we don’t know what they do with it. “They will just buy a few vehicles for the police. As of today, there is no bill against open grazing in Ondo State. “The bill should involve all the stakeholders to be effective. Traditional rulers should be encouraged to set up vigilante and stop movement of cows.” Governors now turn Amotekun to bodyguards Tofowomo said the Western Nigeria Security Network, also known as Amotekun, has not achieved its objective because governors of the South West region didn’t carry critical stakeholders along at the formative stages. YOU MAY ALSO LIKE: We’ll protect Yorubaland against invasion, OPC, hunters, vigilantes assure South-West indigenes He said, “The governors of the South-West created Amotekun without getting the input of critical stakeholders. “I am not part of it as a senator. We have 18 senators from the South-West and none of us was involved. The members of the House of Representatives were not also involved. “They should have involved a lot of people. They should have carried everybody along. They should have organised a big symposium and the communique at the end of it should indicate that all of us have agreed. “They just took the bill directly to the Houses of Assembly without the input of stakeholders. We are not part of it. We are just watching them like a film. That is why they cannot tackle insecurity in their states.” The Senator cautioned against the use of self-defence to tackle the herdsmen menace in the South-West. He said, “Self-defence is a wrong tactic. Those who are advocating it are putting the cart before the horse. “They should rather tell the governors who are using the Amotekun as bodyguards to fund them and position the corps to tackle the herdsmen.” READ ALSO: My desire to speak fluent English made me enrol in JSS2 – 50-year-old Kwara widow The Senator warned those agitating for amnesty for bandits should perish the thought because it would spell doom for the nation. He said, “Amnesty for repentant bandits can’t work. Where will you find them? They are hiding in thick forests. “The money you will spend on amnesty should be used to equip the Nigeria Police. We can’t have effective policing when we don’t have adequate number of personnel in the Nigeria Police Force.” |
