COVID-19: British Airways retires 31 B747 aircraft

British Airways

UK flag carrier British Airways is retiring its entire Boeing 747 “Jumbo Jet” fleet, it said Friday, following the huge hit to international air travel caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It is with great sadness that we can confirm we are proposing to retire our entire 747 fleet with immediate effect,” the airline said in a statement to AFP.

“It is unlikely our magnificent ‘queen of the skies’ will ever operate commercial services for British Airways again due to the downturn in travel caused by the COVID-19 global pandemic.”

The 400-passenger 747 was launched by Boeing in 1970, and dominated international air travel and cargo over the following decades.

With 31 Jumbos in its fleet, BA currently flies more of the planes than any other airline, according to its statement.

It added the last had been due to retire in 2024 as the carrier turns to more modern and fuel-efficient models like Boeing’s 787 and the Airbus A350.

The pandemic has battered the air transport sector, with the latest casualty United Airlines warning last week it could lay off as many as 36,000 workers.

Virgin Australia has also collapsed, and is being bought by an American company.

In May, BA’s owner IAG reported a net loss of 1.68 billion euros ($1.8 billion) in the three months to the end of March.

The airline has announced plans to lay off 12,000 staff and last month was reported to be selling off artworks by Damien Hirst, Bridget Riley and Peter Doig thought to be worth millions of pounds to raise funds.

Boeing itself has announced 16,000 layoffs.

Groups ask DSS to release lawyer arrested for criticising Abia gov
Published July 17, 2020

Oluwatosin Omojuyigbe

Some human rights groups have demanded the release of a lawyer, Emperor Ogbonna, who was allegedly re-arrested on court premises in Aba, Abia State, by personnel of the Department of State Services.

The Citizens’ Gavel, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, Paradigm Initiatives, Civic Media Lab, CODE and Civic Hive, urged all stakeholders in the justice sector to speak against the disregard for the rule of law by the DSS.

The groups, in a statement signed by the Communications Associate of Citizens’ Gavel, Taiwo Makanjuola, and titled: ‘Fundamental rights abuse and unlawful detention of Emperor Ogbonna Esq. by the Department of State Security Service’ alleged that personnel of the DSS re-arrested the lawyer on April 28, 2020, immediately he was granted bail by the court.

The groups noted that Ogbonna was alleged to have in a Facebook post criticized the Abia State Government.

Ogbonna, who was apprehended following the governor’s complaint to the police, was said to have denied being the originator of the post and explained that he only shared it.

The groups noted that Ogbonna was subsequently charged and was remanded in a correctional centre pending the Director of Public Prosecutions’ legal advice.

According to the groups, Ogbonna’s counsel filed a bail application on behalf of his client, which was granted by the court, adding that the DSS re-arrested him on the court premises.

The statement read in part, “On March 28, 2020, Mr Ogbonna’s lawyer, Martin Ladu, was suddenly waylaid as he was exiting the court premises. His car was blocked by three government-owned SUVs. The occupants of the vehicles came out and interrogated him as to the whereabouts of the defendant. He informed them that the defendant was still in prison because the bail conditions had not been met. His car was thoroughly ransacked by the security details despite his protests.

“Upon the perfection of Mr Ogbonna’s bail process, a discreet message was sent to the prison for his release, but alas, the officials of the Department of State Services got wind of it and came to re-arrest Ogbonna and after much resistance, he was re-arrested on April 28, 2020, immediately he was released on bail. He was taken to the offices of the DSS and has not been seen since.

“Till date, Mr Ogbonna has not been taken to court on any new charge and his existing bail has been rudely impeded by officials of the DSS. It also became public knowledge that Emperor Ogbonna was discreetly moved to Abuja by the DSS after a long period of stalling his defence team’s request for his immediate release.

“On June 29, 2020, the Federal High Court sitting in Umuahia, Abia State, in a ruling ordered the immediate release of Mr Emperor Ogbonna from the custody of the DSS or his arraignment. The court also restrained the DSS from re-arresting him. The court further awarded the sum of N1,500,000 against the DSS as damages.

“We wish to state at this point that the actions and inactions of the DSS are a major slap on the face of the rule of law and the powers of the court. It also amount to a continuous and gross breach of Mr Ogbonna’s right to liberty, which is protected and guaranteed under Chapter IV of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

“Gavel, SERAP, Paradigm Initiatives, Civic Media Lab, CODE and Civic Hive use this medium to call on all stakeholders in the justice sector of this nation, civil societies and liberty organisations, international bodies like the African Union, ECOWAS, the European Union, etc and other well-meaning Nigerians to rise against this tide of illegality and utter disrespect for the rule of law by the DSS.

“We cannot fold our arms and continue to condone this show of shame where the orders of the court are practically worthless and ineffective. It is a steaming volcano waiting to explode and plunge us all into anarchy. We have to resist this. We have to collectively uphold the dignity and sanctity of our courts of law and their orders.”

A 19-year-old girl and member of a cult known as the Marine Girls, Blessing David, on Thursday confessed to having slept with 10 men after she was initiated into the group.

The teenager, who was initiated along with other girls, said sleeping with the men was part of the initiation rites.

She said this at the headquarters of the Edo State Police Command in Benin City, when the Commissioner of Police, Mr Johnson Kokumo, paraded 15 armed robbery suspects, six cultists, three kidnappers and four murder suspects.

The cultists paraded were three teenage girls, who were said to be members of the Marine Girls.

Blessing told PUNCH Metro that she was initiated into the group in 2019.

“My name is Blessing David. I was initiated into the cult last year. I slept with 10 men as part of the initiation process,” she stated.

Another 16-year-old girl, Ada Emeka, said she also slept with 10 men as part of the initiation rites.

The CP said two suspected armed robbers were killed in the early hours of Thursday by operatives of the command.

“An eight-man robbery gang, who operated at the Amagba area of Benin City, robbed 13 houses, injuring victims with machetes and other weapons during the operation that started around 12am on Thursday and lasted till 3am. The police engaged them in a gun duel and in the process, two of them were killed,” Kokumo stated.

One of the victims, who gave his name simply as Eghosa, said he was sleeping with his wife in the bedroom when he suddenly saw torch lights pointing at them.

The convict pleaded guilty to the crime and opted for plea bargain.

Nairaland GeneralArmy Rescues Kidnapped Victims, Recovers Weapons In 3 States by Basoenewokoma(op): 8:30pm On Jul 13, 2020
Troops of the Nigerian Army under Operation Sahel Sanity have rescued eight kidnapped victims and recovered weapons in Sokoto, Zamfara and Kastina States.

The Acting Director, Defence Media Operations, Defence Headquarters, Abuja, Brig.-Gen. Benard Onyeuko, disclosed this at a press briefing on Sunday in Faskari, Kastina State.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Tukur Buratai, had on July 6 flagged off the Operation Sahel Sanity at Special Army Super Camp in Faskari as part of the Nigerian Army Day Celebration.

Onyeuko said the Chief of Army Staff flagged off the exercise to flush out armed bandits, cattle rustlers, kidnappers and other criminal elements from the North West Zone.

“The troops quickly moblised to the area and engaged the criminals, neutralising scores in the process.

“The situation was quickly brought under control and the troops subsequently dominated the area with patrols denying criminal elements freedom of action,” he said.

He said on July 9 while responding to a distress call, troops deployed at Gidan Baure in Jibiya Local Government Area of Katsina State rescued three young girls kidnapped by armed bandits at Sayau village.

Onyeuko said on the same day, troops also rescued three kidnapped victims in Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

“Two other kidnap victims who were kidnapped on June 1, 2020 at Yayi village in Sabon Birni LGA of Sokoto State have been rescued by the troops.

“All the victims have been handed over to Katsina and Sokoto State Government officials for further action.

“Receiving a credible intelligence, the troops sprang an ambush at Gidan Jaja in Zurmi LGA of Zamfara, the bandits fled with heavy gunshot wounds, abandoning one AK 47 rifle in the process.

“While on aggressive mobile patrol, our troops intercepted three armed bandits who opened fire on troops.

“During the fire fight, one of the bandits was neutralised while others fled in disarray, one AK 47 rifle and one motorcycle were recovered,” he said.

Onyeuko also said on Saturday, July 11, troops laid ambush between Daki Takwas and Tashar Kuturu villages of Anka and Talata Mafara Local Government Areas of Zamfara.

He said troops made contact with the bandits who escaped with various degrees of gunshot wounds in the cover of darkness.

Onyeuko said troops had continued to dominate the area as a means of confidence building for the residents and farmers to continue their agricultural activities.

He added that items recovered included one motorcycle, 10 dane guns, one catarpult and one knife.

Others, he said, were one saw, 16 plugs, one axe and three cell phones.

Onyeuko, on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff, commended the troops for their gallantry, successes and the professionalism exhibited within the short period of the operation and urged them not to rest on their oars.

He reassured the people of the North-West Zone of the army’s commitment to restoring peace in the region.

Only God can make Igbo man President – Arthur Eze
Published July 13, 2020

Tony Okafor, Awka

Billionaire oil magnate, Prince Arthur Eze, has said it will take God for an Igbo man to become Nigeria’s President.

According to him, the Igbo people do not love another and are not united.

Ahead of the 2023 general elections, Eze advised the Ndigbo not to crave for a President of Igbo extraction but a President who would champion their interest irrespective of his tribe.

He spoke to journalists in Ukpo, Anambra State, on Sunday, during a church service.

He declared that he would support a good leader as Nigerian President irrespective of the person’s ethnic group.

Eze said, “For the Igbo to be President, they must love themselves. Do they love themselves? The North is very kind. If you go to northern Nigerian, you will see churches everywhere. There are churches in Kano, Sokoto, Kaduna, Abuja and others yet they say there is hatred. Do we (Igbo) love ourselves?

“Only God can make an Igbo man President. We shall pray to God to find an Igbo man who has character to help people. I would prefer someone who has conscience; somebody who will remember me. I don’t care where you come from.

“I went to the North, they didn’t know who I was. They gave me $12m for the construction of Kano TV in 1980. I didn’t have one naira then. It was the same thing in Katsina, Borno and Kaduna. Then, they put me in oil business. They didn’t care where I came from. Tell me any Igbo man who can do that?”

rejection of the Assembly’s request by the Chief Judge was an indication that the leadership of the Assembly was incompetent.

He said, “It is in this light that we demand the immediate resignation or removal of the inept and mediocre Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, David Oloyelogun, whose incompetence has brought the exalted parliament into disrepute.

“This will go a long way to preserve our democratic gains, restore the dignity of the legislature and the principle of separation of powers.”

The deputy governor commended the Chief Judge and added that her action had rekindled the confidence and hope of the people in the judiciary.

He said, “His Lordship leaves no one in doubt about the need to adhere strictly to the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) and due process in modern democracy. The decision is a triumph of the rule of law over brigandage and anarchy.”

Reacting to the deputy governor’s statement, the Speaker said, “I have not seen the report where he said I’m incompetent; when I see it, I will reply him appropriately. I don’t believe somebody of that status will bring himself so low to utter such a statement.”

The Speaker said the Assembly would correct the error, which made the Chief Judge to decline the request to constitute a panel to probe Ajayi.

PoliticsI Didn’t Campaign For Buhari While With Jonathan – Dasuki by Basoenewokoma(op): 6:43am On Jul 13, 2020
A former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, has denied campaigning for the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), while serving as ex-President Goodluck Jonathan’s NSA.

Dasuki said this in a statement on Sunday titled, ‘I never campaigned for APC or Buhari as NSA to President Jonathan’.

He said, “The truth is that I was involved in an attempt at forging an alliance between the Action Congress of Nigeria, All Nigeria Peoples Party and the Congress for Progressive Change, among others, prior to the 2011 elections, which was not successful.

“My involvement in that political process ended after the elections of 2011.

“At the point of accepting the appointment to serve as the National Security Adviser in 2012, I made clear to President Jonathan that I had relationships with General Muhammadu Buhari of the CPC, Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu of the ACN and Chief Ogbonnaya Onu of the ANPP, among other opposition elements and that my appointment would not cause me to sever the relationship.

PoliticsObtain 28-day Remand Order For Magu, Fayose Tells Panel by Basoenewokoma(op): 9:44pm On Jul 11, 2020
Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has asked the Justice Ayo Salami-led presidential panel investigating the suspended acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu, to formalise his detention.

The former governor advised the panel to obtain a 28-day remand order from a court of law to give it ample time to complete the ongoing probe of the embattled ex-EFCC chair.

Magu, who was whisked away on Monday by security operatives, has since been detained by security operatives.

He has since applied to the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, to be released on bail, according to a letter sent on his behalf by one of his lawyers, Oluwatosin Ojaomo, on Friday.

But commenting on the development on Saturday via his verified Twitter handle, Fayose said, “The Panel should formalise Magu’s detention by obtaining a 28-day remand order from a court to enable completion of investigations.

“The panel must equally get temporary and permanent forfeiture of loots linked to him. That’s Magu’s style and procedure while in office. He can’t complain now.”

He added, “Wahab Shittu, EFCC lawyer turned Magu’s defender understands their style, so why is he complaining? Or didn’t he work with Magu to secure court orders to detain people indefinitely and forfeit properties linked to people being investigated?”

EducationWe’re In Talks With US Over Plans To Deport Foreign Students – FG by Basoenewokoma(op): 10:31am On Jul 11, 2020
The Federal Government says it in talks with relevant authorities over plans by the United States government’s plan to strip Nigerian and other international college students of their US visas and deport them if their courses go entirely online because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The move will affect thousands of Nigerians who constitute one-third of African students who travelled to the US to attend universities or participate in training programmes, as well as non-academic or vocational studies.

The Director, Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Education, Bem Ben Goong, who disclosed this in a telephone interview with The Guardian in Abuja, said the federal government is trying to verify the authenticity of the policy before responding to it as a country.

According to him, “If the report about the US is true, I think there would be very little any government can do about it.

He said: “We are in touch with the United States authorities to get the validity of that information. On social media today, anything can happen. I would also like you to bear in mind that if that policy is true, it does not only affect Nigerian students, it will affect every student studying in the US.

“That Nigerian student will come home is not a big deal, the big deal is if they will be able to study successfully and get their results and the certificates they need to get? If the answer is yes, there not much anyone can do about it. We will verify that and put up our appropriate response.

Gong added that if the policy is successfully implemented by the Donald Trump administration, it could spell doom for the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), as the Federal Government may decide to adopt a fully online policy thereby engaging lecturers only on part-time basis.

“If the policy is true, it means that the world is changing and ASUU may go extant. In the US, I know for a fact that 80 per cent of the lecturers are part-time lecturers. If the Nigerian government decides to tell ASUU that it cannot bear their bill anymore and that it was going to put them on part-time and they can only be teaching based on their workload, these are some of the things that ASUU needs to consider.

“The FG invested over N1.3 trillion in infrastructure last year and if you go to any of our universities today, the infrastructural development is pronounced.”

He explained that 70 percent of lecturers in the Nigerian university system might lose their jobs if the government decides to adopt fully online-based teaching and learning.

“When I saw that report about the US, what came to my mind was that ASUU is in trouble because if the US implements that and it is successful, it then means that you can do most courses online. It means that 70 percent of lecturers will lose their jobs.

“ASUU needs to understand that they have competitors and their competitor is the evolving technologies that can knock them off. If ASUU continues to be archaic in their thinking, orientation and actions, their days may be numbered.”

CrimePolice Parade ‘abortion Nurse’, Incestuous Pastor In Ogun by Basoenewokoma(op): 8:42am On Jul 10, 2020
The police, yesterday, paraded a nurse, Mrs Ogundimu Monilola, accused of helping a 44-year-old pastor of the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), Ogo Oluwa parish, Olokuta, Ogun State, Oluwafemi Oyebola, to procure family planning care for his 24-year-old daughter, whom he impregnated three times.

Monilola, who claimed to be Assistant Chief Matron at the State General Hospital, Idiroko, Ogun State, said she is also the health worker in charge of the family planning service at the facility.

She denied carrying out any abortion on Pastor Oyebola’s daughter, but the police said she had in her statement earlier admitted
performing abortions on the girl who opted to remain anonymous.

She said she was on duty at a particular day when the man presented the girl for family planning at the hospital, claiming the girl was his house help, while a man, who identified himself as James, stood as the husband of the girl.

According to her, she never knew the family planning sought by the girl was targeted at shielding the incestuous lifestyle of the pastor. She also declared that the family planning service sought and obtained by the girl at the facility was official and well documented, explaining that it is legitimate for any female that is 18 years and above to seek and obtain family planning care from a hospital.

Nurse Monilola was paraded before reporters at the Ogun State Police Command headquarters, Eleweran, with Pastor Oyebola by the Commissioner of Police, Kenneth Ebrimson.

Ebrimson said the offence allegedly committed by Oyebola is “incest” and that he had been perpetrating it with his daughter since 2015, leading to three pregnancies, termination of the three and subsequent family planning for the girl to step up the incestuous lifestyle without any risk of further pregnancy until the secret leaked in 2020.

The pastor, who claimed to be the leader of a deliverance team at the Ogo-Oluwa parish of CAC, admitted that the incestuous acts with his daughter was a “mistake resulting from a spiritual attack.”

He explained that an “unclean spirit” lured him into the affairs with his daughter and appealed to Nigerians, the government and the Christian community to forgive him.

It was gathered that the illicit affairs burst after the daughter, who had recently finished her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), was unwilling to stay further with her father in the same house. When the pastor continued to oppose her resolve to leave home for
Lagos, the girl ran away and reported her ordeals to a Non-Governmental Organisation, the Advocacy for Children And Vulnerable Persons Network.

The NGO eventually led her to the Owode-Egbado Divisional headquarters, where she reported that her father had been forcefully having carnal knowledge of her since 2015 when she was 19-year-old and shortly after the demise of her mother.
EducationAfenifere Demands Ministers’ Sacking For Stopping School Resumption by Basoenewokoma(op): 8:34am On Jul 10, 2020
The pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere has condemned the decision of the Federal Government that schools should remain closed in the country until further notice.

The group called on the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (red.), to sack the ministers in of education for planning to ground education for a year.

The Secretary General of the association, Bashorun Sehinde Arogbofa, said the Federal Government should have allowed pupils to resume and find means of protecting them against coronavirus disease.

He said, “Adamu Adamu should be sacked, he cannot bring our school system back to the stone age. They had about six months to plan for these children what did the Federal Government do?

“It means the two of them (Adamu and the Minister of State for Education) don’t know what they are doing, so they should go. I think the two ministers in the ministry should go. Why would one say the pupils should resume to take their paper in August and the other minister would come and reverse the order?”

8th senate, demands arrest of cohorts

The presidential panel investigating sundry allegations against the suspended chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, yesterday questioned the secretary, Olanipekun Olukoyede, and directors of the commission.

Magu is facing corruption allegation by the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami.

The Guardian gathered that the panel led by Justice Ayo Salami had extended invitation the top officials of EFCC to provide details on some of the allegations against Magu.

The former anti-graft czar appeared before the panel from the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), where he has been since Monday. He appeared with his lawyer, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), the former Minister of Justice who set up the commission during former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration.

Armed security operatives had stormed the EFCC headquarters on Monday and cordoned it off but unaware that Magu was not in the office. He was reportedly picked up later at Wuse II, in Abuja.

Meanwhile, a group known as the Unified Nigerian Youths Forum has said that the suspension of Magu from the EFCC vindicated the leadership of the 8th National Assembly and the Department of State Services (DSS).

The forum said Magu did more damage to the image of EFCC than any of his predecessors by so much compromise.

The group suggested that any person to be appointed as chairman of the commission “must be proven beyond any reasonable doubt to have track records of bravery, accountability, loyalty to the nation and sincerity of purpose.”

In a statement yesterday, president of the forum, Abdulsalam Kazeem, told President Muhammadu Buhari to take careful steps in appointing Magu’s replacement, as Nigerians would no longer take excuses on such appointments.

“We are aware that the presidency has pencilled in over seven senior police officers, both serving and retired. As a group, we appeal to the president to appoint the next EFCC boss based on merit and not favourism as usual. Someone who can repair the battered image of the commission is urgently needed.”

According to him, appointing the Director of Operations to Magu, who is being pushed forward, to oversee the commission will further prove that the country is not serious with the fight against corruption at all levels.

“If we are serious, the Director of Operations, who might be a co-conspirator, should be under house arrest with all those ‘Magu boys’ who allegedly help their boss to blackmail and frame up innocent Nigerians all in the name of fighting corruption, because a single tree cannot make a forest.

“All the management staff, including those he favoured with accelerated promotions and juicy positions to serve his interest, must be dismantled now, to pave way for an overhaul of the EFCC,” Kazeem stated.

The Nasarawa State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr Abdulkarim Kana, has tested positive for COVID-19.

The state Commissioner for Health, Yahaya Ahmed, said on Thursday that the commissioner and his family members were in self-isolation.

He said, “We took the sample of the Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control where he was confirmed positive. He is in self isolation at home and is in a stable condition. We are taking care of him.

“We are also tracing those that have come in contact with the AG to curtail further spread of the virus in the state.”

Kana is also a member of the state task force on COVID-19.

Meanwhile, the Bingham University, Karu, in Nasarawa State, says its centre, Zankli Research Centre, has the strength to test samples and produce results of COVID-19 within one hour.

The Director of the centre, Dr John Bimba, on Thursday in Lafia, said, “The Nigerian Centre for Disease Control has approved Bingham University’s Zankli Research Centre to commence private testing for COVID-19.

“We have a maximum capacity of 300 tests per day and each sample could be ready in one hour,” he added.
Foreign AffairsTrump Wants Americans To Believe Biden Is A Radical Leftist. It's A Tough Sell. by Basoenewokoma(op): 7:08am On Jul 10, 2020
Joe Biden ran a Democratic primary campaign pitting himself against the party's rising progressive wing. From health care to foreign policy, the former vice president rejected the left's most ambitious policies and successfully pitched voters on his more moderate vision.

That reality has complicated matters for President Donald Trump, who has long sought to portray Democrats of all stripes as a front for socialist radicals and anti-fascist protesters. The caricature rarely applies, but the dissonance is especially clear when Trump uses it to project an image of Biden -- who has spent decades in public life -- as a closet leftist sympathizer determined to advance the policies he spent the last year running against.

Trump's one-size-fits-all playbook have been widely adopted by his allies, from Texas Sen. Ted Cruz to former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. It's even come some unexpected sources, like former New Hampshire governor and senator Judd Gregg, who in an op-ed this week that warned of a "coming Biden coup." But their arguments have so far failed to turn the tide against the presumptive Democratic nominee, who leads by double-digits in most national and swing state polling, or make much of a dent in the public perception of the 77-year-old.
