The Police in Rivers State have arrested two pastors for allegedly raping a 27-year old member of the National Youths Service Corps. The corps member is observing her primary assignment at the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state. The pastors, identified as Austin Emmanuel and Peter Davies, are currently being detained at the State Criminal and Investigation and Intelligence Department, Port Harcourt. Emmanuel reportedly invited the victim to his house for an indoor birthday party and in the course of the celebration, he was later joined by Davies. It was gathered that the suspects offered to pray for the victim and in the middle of the prayer, they applied a-yet-to-be-identified liquid on her face which made her unconscious. Speaking with journalists, the corps member said she experienced pains in her private parts after regaining consciousness. She said, “Actually, it was after I regained consciousness that I was feeling pain in my vagina. I told my mum and she reported to the police and they said that they should take me to doctors without borders for checkup. I found out that I was fingered according to the report and saw bruises seen all over my body.” Meanwhile, parents of the victim, Mr. and Mrs. Timothy Bonko called on the Rivers State Police Command not to allow the accused persons go scot free to serve as a deterrent to other persons. The father of the girl said he had approached the International Federation of Women Lawyers in the state to ensure the prosecution of the case. “When I saw her, she was not in her senses. I started asking questions. Then they told me that they have arrested the suspects. I saw the suspects and they told me what happened. “We took her to a psychiatric hospital. They tested her and did everything. Wherever we went, the NYSC followed us on the matter. An NYSC official reported the issue to the headquarters. If we allow this matter to die, they will do the same thing to other female corps members. That is why I decided to come to FIDA,” he explained. more post; It doesn't matter what life may be, so far as I'm still alive I will arise and rule's this world before I finally leave the earth. what are your targets? what I know is that my creative act one day must surly change Nigeria and her economy system and I have that believe in a better standing. are you famous now? for now people don't know my worth but I believed they will soon view my wall to see my profile clearly. pandemic era ; For me this particular corona or corolla virus its help me a lot in the aspect of new idea's although it also have ar negative side on me too. are you a graduate? no, neither an undergraduate, I have not been opportune to go that far in education but at least I'm done with my ssce and I'm still looking forward and with the courage I have I will. what advice can you give to your fellow youth? well, they should use their head well before some else's use it for them. and they should stand on their ground no matter how rough that ground might be and always abstain from crime. and please let me shout out to all my fellow young Techs that are Nigerians too.

NAN reports that trouble started when former Deputy Leader in the House of Representatives, Alhaji Baba Agaie, was manhandled and whisked out of the venue of the congress by heavily armed security men. The pan-northern socio-political organisation, the Arewa Consultative Forum, on Thursday said its membership was not by force. The ACF’s National Publicity Secretary, Emmanuel Yawe, said this in an interview with one of our correspondents in Abuja, while reacting to the emergence of a breakaway group in the pan-northern organisation. Yawe said the ACF said was not worried about the emergence of the North-Central Peoples Forum. On Wednesday, prominent leaders from the North-Central announced their exit from the ACF, citing the worsening insecurity in northern Nigeria. The NCPF, which has as its interim Chairman, a former Minister of Health, Gabriel Aduku, said it would fight insecurity in the North-Central. Commenting on the emergence of the new group, Yawe said the ACF was a big family that accommodated diverse interests in the region. Yawe added that the ACF would not expel the NCPF member, neither was the northern body angry over the development. The forum’s spokesman said, “We are not worried at the ACF at all. The north is a very big region of this country. Niger State alone is three times bigger than the entire South-East geopolitical zone. So, we are not worried when such a thing happens because when you are so big and you accommodate people of such diverse backgrounds, a lot of things are bound to develop. ‘We cannot force everybody to belong to the ACF, but we accept every northerner as member of ACF. “We have a vision of what we want the North to be. We want the North to catch up and maybe overtake the South in terms of development in education, industry, agriculture and everything. So, any group that says it has broken away from the ACF, if really they have broken away, if they have the same vision with us, they are welcome.” SOKAPU lauds new group, says one North a deceit, never existed But the Southern Kaduna Peoples Union commended the emergence of the North Central Peoples Forum. The National Public Relations Officer of SOKAPU, Mr Luka Binniyat, while reacting to the formation of the NCPF, told one of our correspondents in Kaduna on Thursday that the development was long awaited. According to Binniyat, the ACF means little or nothing to the people of Southern Kaduna. The SOKAPU’s spokesman said, “It is a super positive development and long awaited, although it will be subsumed under the Middle Belt Forum, in which Southern Kaduna is an active member. “The ACF has meant little or nothing for Southern Kaduna but serves as a ruse to pursue the interest of the core north under a false ‘One North’ that has truly never existed. “The truth should be sinking into everyone that a united, monolithic North, if it ever existed, is finally dead and buried, no matter the number of Middle Belt persons they are fronting as leaders of the ACF. “SOKAPU welcomes the development and we shall write to congratulate them for their courage and vision.” We don’t know NCPF’s intention –M’Belt Forum On its part, the Middle Belt Forum said it did not know the real intention behind the formation of the breakaway group. The National President of the forum, Dr Bitrus Porgu who spoke to one of our correspondents in Jos on Thursday said only time would tell. He added that the Middle Belt Forum was intact and ready to face any group or organisation whose formation was to destabilise the people of the region Porgu said “We are watching what the people in the breakaway ACF will do because for now, we don’t know their real intention. If dissatisfaction in the operation of the parent body was the reason behind the formation of the new group or a design to destabilize the Middle Belt Forum, we will know with time.” ,,

Since 1999, when I was called to the Nigerian Bar, I have firmly pitched my life and professional tent in the realm of the sociology of law and its practice, demonstrating that the law is an instrument of social, economic, and political engineering and change. Since Nigeria is carefully designed to be a seemingly impregnable dichotomy between the haves and have-nots, the rulers and the ruled, the political class and the oppressed masses of the people, as opposed to a noble commitment to building an egalitarian society, the law is often a veritable tool for the perpetuation of the narrow and selfish interests of the few, whose unguarded adventure into the reins of power since 1960 has almost brought this great nation to its knees today. It is in light of the foregoing reality that we must carefully consider the provisions of Sections 839, 842, 843, 844, and 850 contained in Part F of the recently assented Company and Allied Matters Act 2020. Having carefully read particularly the entire provisions of Part F of CAMA 2020, it is my professional opinion that apart from the fact that the provisions are full of booby traps with an anachronistic legal framework for associations registered with the commission, I do verily believe that the following provisions of CAMA 2020 offend the spirit and letters of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria(as amended), particularly Chapter 4, which among other provisions guarantees the Fundamental Human Rights of the Nigerian people to Freedom of Assembly and Association: Section 839 granting the Corporate Affairs Commission and the courts powers to suspend the trustees of an association and appoint interim manager ‘to act as receiver and manager in respect of the property and affairs of the association;’ More in Home Asthma: A systematic approach to symptom management Okunbo gunning for Edo treasury by funding Ize-Iyamu –Obaseki’s aide Edo poll will hold despite drumbeat of war –INEC Don’t test our will, IG tells Ondo, Edo politicians, voters Thugs lay siege to Ondo Assembly Sections 842, 843, 844, empowering the Corporate Affairs Commission to interfere with the finances or financial systems of an association and; Sections 849 and 850, giving wide powers to the commission and the court to merge and dissolve associations I agree with the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project in its open pre-action notice to the President as follows: “With these provisions, the government now has overly broad and discretionary powers to arbitrarily withdraw, cancel or revoke the certificate of any association, suspend and remove trustees, take control of finances of any association, and to merge two associations without their consent and approval of their members.” I have listened to the argument of the Registrar General of the Corporate Affairs Commission, Alhaji Garba Abubakar, and others, who have argued vociferously that the Non-Governmental Organisations/Associations registered under Part F of CAMA cannot be without regulations and therefore the newly inserted provisions are a noble attempt on the part of the state to regulate their operations and activities. While I agree that there must be regulation by all social and legal means necessary, I think the foregoing position is not only mischievous but also misleading as it seeks to create the impression that the associations under Part F are without regulations. I daresay that Non-Governmental Organisations/Associations are already adequately regulated by a plethora of civil and criminal laws, which regulate their human interactions and corporate practices. It is important to note that the Fundamental Human Rights of the People to Freedom of Assembly and Association may be exercised by Nigerians in forming and operating an association legally without registering the same with the Corporate Affairs Commission. They will still be governed with the provisions of the Nigerian constitution and existing civil and criminal laws of the land. And if there must be further regulation for whatever reason, I do not understand why it must contravene directly or indirectly the spirit and letters of the Nigerian constitution, particularly the Fundamental Human Rights enshrined in the same. Many have argued that many NGOs have become a conduit for financial and related crimes. While this may be true, can we say in all honesty that there are no laws against what is perceived to be the excesses of the NGOs? Of course, there are a plethora of existing laws. The challenge in Nigeria is never the existence of the law but the gross failure of the state to enforce the same due to its self-imposed social and political encumbrances. It does not make any sense to civilisation that the government, instead of admitting its failure to enforce its laws and turn a new leaf, is turning around to put the burden again on the people by taking away their inalienable rights. How do you know which law works and which does not and which needs review when there is no deft commitment to enforcement? Existing laws are first exposed, tested, and exhausted in the theatre of enforcement before they are brought into the crucible of review to cure the loopholes found in the course of enforcement. Many, including the Registrar General of the CAC, have argued that the newly inserted provisions of CAMA 2020 are a benchmark of the Charity Act 2011 of the United Kingdom. While the foregoing may sound like a noble commitment to bring the regulation of the NGOs to global standards, permit me to make the following points, which I consider to fair comments on the same: The Charity law in the UK dates back to 1601 when the State of Charitable Uses Act was enacted and the same has since evolved and known as Charities Act 2011. It is a comprehensive body of law with 385 Sections and 11 Schedules, which establishes the Charity Commission for England and Wales, with the strict responsibility to regulate the entire operations of charities in the UK and Wales and make copious provisions for the corresponding responsibilities and statutory support from the government of the UK to the charities, apart from exemption from tax. Here, the state is depicted as a dependable SUPPORT SYSTEM in law, in truth and indeed! Section 76 Charities Act 2011 titled, ‘Suspension of trustees, etc. and appointment of interim managers’ from where our Section 839 was copied is one out of other 385 sections, the provisions are not as manipulatively domineering and confusion-laden like our Section 839. Thus, it does not make sense to copy the same section and dump it in CAMA in abstract. I was at a webinar where the Registrar General of the CAC was asked to clear the ambiguity between Section 839(1) and 839(2) and after literarily stammering through the question, he was only able to say that there would still be another set of guidelines. I had thought before that a piece of legislation should be clear on the face of it, though it does not have to be perfect. It is important to note therefore that the Charities Act 2011 is robust and detailed legislation, which for over 400 years has evolved through the crucible of extensive consultation and practice scrutiny, taking cognisance of history and culture of a people as it relates to the establishment and operations of charities. It is therefore misleading to compare the same with the provisions of Part F of CAMA 2020, containing paltry 28 Sections (823-850), which do not contain any revolutionary and inspiring provisions apart from seeking to put more and unnecessary burden on associations. If the goal of Part F is to bring a revolution in the regulations of charities in Nigeria, it would be more robust and consultative. If I note without conceding that the goal of the new CAMA provisions is to inspire and enforce due process and healthy corporate governance, I beg to submit that probity, transparency, and stewardship are the foundation and culture of the public life and services in most of the developed countries our rulers often seek to copy social and legal innovations from. It is just that these rulers are very astute in the copy of the letters but are deficient in copying the spirit, which is the engine room and operating system of the letter. They do not think that in all good conscience that to inspire the confidence of the populace that the charity of probity, transparency, and stewardship should begin in the homes of the rulers in their public lives and rending public services, noting that the leaders of charity organisations and our rulers both hold resources in trust for people. It is a case of those who come to equity must come with clean hands. One of my points here is that we cannot compare the decency, integrity, fairness, civilisation, and effectiveness that the Charity Commission for England and Wales and the legal system as a whole employ in regulating charities and responding to matters concerning them in that clime with the conduct of our Corporate Affairs Commission and our legal system, which we all know is inherently plagued with this engrained social malady, called the ‘Nigerian Factor. Kindly note that this piece is an open invitation to think and I hope I have been able to achieve my goal.

Facebook says it will block a Frenchman suffering from an incurable condition from livestreaming his own death. Alain Cocq, 57, planned to broadcast his final days after starting to refuse food, drink and medicine on Saturday. President Emmanuel Macron had earlier denied his request for euthanasia. Mr Cocq wants the law changed in France to allow terminally ill people to die as they wish. Some groups, including the Catholic Church, oppose euthanasia on moral grounds. What's the difference between assisted suicide and euthanasia? "The road to deliverance begins and believe me, I am happy," Mr Cocq posted on Facebook early on Saturday morning from his bed at home in Dijon, after announcing he had "finished his last meal". "I know the days ahead are going to be difficult but I have made my decision and I am calm," he added. Mr Cocq suffers from a degenerative disease, which causes the walls of his arteries to stick together. But Facebook blocked the plan to livestream his death, stating that it did not allow portrayals of suicide. "Although we respect [Mr Cocq's] decision to want to draw attention to this complex question, following expert advice we have taken measures to prevent the live broadcast on Alain's account," a Facebook spokesman told the AFP news agency. ADVERTISEMENT "Our rules do not allow us to show suicide attempts." Image copyright REUTERS Image caption Mr Cocq posts from his bed, where he is confined Mr Cocq said Facebook was blocking his broadcasts until 8 September. He called upon his supporters to lobby the social media platform to change its stance. "It is up to you now," he said. In July, Mr Cocq penned a letter to Mr Macron, asking the president to allow him to die "with dignity," describing his "extremely violent suffering". Mr Macron said he was "moved" by the letter, but could not grant the request as he was "not situated above the law". Euthanasia is a controversial topic in France, with many supporting a right to die with dignity, while others - particularly religious conservatives - have opposed calls for its decriminalisation. |
The Trade Union Congress on Saturday says it will not go back on its decision to embark on a protest on Tuesday against the increase in the prices of fuel and electricity tariff despite speculations about a court order stopping the proposed demonstration. TUC Deputy National President, Chika Onuegbu, who disclosed this to The PUNCH, said the union had begun to mobilise its members for the protest and strike. Explaining that the TUC was not aware of any court order to stop the planned protest, Onuegbu condemned the increase of fuel price, adding that the Federal Government’s action had become a burden on Nigerians. He said, “I must say that we are mobilising our members for the planned protest on Tuesday. Some are talking about a court order; but to the best of my knowledge, we are not aware of any court order stopping our planned protest. “I am also not aware that our secretariat has received any court order; our people have not been served. Former Malian president Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, who has not been seen in public since being overthrown on August 18, has been hospitalised. Keita, 75, was admitted to a private clinic in the capital Bamako on Tuesday evening and “will go home in the afternoon (Wednesday),” one of his aides told AFP. The checkup had been scheduled for last month but the former president had not gone to the appointment, the source said. A healthcare worker, confirming this account, said, “the president has arrived for a routine checkup that was pending for some time. Everything’s fine — he is expected to leave this afternoon.” The president was ousted by young military officers who mutinied at a base near Bamako before heading into the city, where they seized Keita for 10 days and other leaders. Hours later, Keita announced on national TV that he was stepping down. He was released on August 27 by the new junta, which also said he was authorised to leave the country for medical care if need be. The aide told AFP that Keita had had dental surgery abroad a few months ago for “terrible toothache,” adding however that he “is fine today.” Keita, who still had three years left in his second five-year term, had been battling mounting protests fuelled by his handling of a bloody jihadist insurgency and failure to right Mali’s floundering economy.

Two policemen attached to former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Adams Oshiomhole, were confirmed dead on Tuesday when an articulated vehicle lost control and ran into the former governor’s convoy near Oluku junction in the Ovia North-East Local Government Area of the Edo State. Oshiomhole’s convoy was on its way to Usen to join the APC campaign train for the September 19 Governorship Election when the accident occurred. This prompted the APC candidate in the forthcoming election, Osagie Ize-Iyamu, to call off his rally at Usen. A statement signed by Oshiomhole’s media aide, Victor Oshoke, disclosed this development, adding that two other persons sustained varying degrees of injuries in the accident. Oshoke’s statement partly read, “Some minutes after 12 pm today Tuesday, September 1, 2020, there was a motor accident involving the convoy of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, along Benin-Lagos by-pass before Oluku junction. “We are sad to report that two police personnel in the Toyota Hilux truck lost their lives while two others are in critical condition receiving treatment at a hospital in the state. Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and other persons in the convoy, apart from those indicated above, did not sustain any injuries.” It continued, “While we pray for the quick recovery of the injured policemen, we extend our condolences to the families of the departed. “The case was immediately reported at the Ekiadolor Police Station, and investigations are ongoing.”

The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi, tells WALE OYEWALE about his recent actions against his estranged wife, among other issues What is your perception of the traditional institution in Nigeria? One thing is that when you are given a position, say as the case is, as a traditional ruler, it is a new school and you want to study. Being a royal blood does not confer success on you naturally as a king, you have to be schooled. Kingship or monarchy is our own traditional system of governance. Now, we have embraced the foreign system of government that is not in tandem with our culture and tradition. Traditionally, in the monarchical system, which brought the crown, you have the king who is equal to a state governor. You have the chiefs who are like the commissioners. The Balogun is in charge of war, Obaloja in charge of commerce. So, why change the system? The politicians are not as close to the people as the obas and chiefs. Are you saying there was no need for the democratic system of government that we imbibed in the first place? Why did we change a good system that confers value on humanity? We should just have improved on the monarchical system instead of pushing it to the background. We are talking of what the roles of traditional institutions should be. In Iwo, for instance, when I mounted the throne, I found out that things were in shambles. So, I, as the oba, changed the bad and the obsolete ways. There was a lot that was wrong with the system. Some people don’t see kingship as a position where you can serve the people. At a time in our history, the kingship era was an era of impunity and the people suffered. At that time, a king might just kill one of his subjects based on an unsubstantiated allegation. But kingship is about serving the people. This is one thing about service. When you serve the people tenaciously, then you become their master. As a king, if you are not ready to serve the people, don’t mount the throne, otherwise you will ridicule it. You do antagonise some kings for their conduct? When you see people cheating in the land, you are the one to intervene. But you see kings today who are still cheating their subjects. Some kings who are supposed to bring succour to their subjects and alleviate their suffering are compounding their problem. In history, some kings conspired and sold their subjects because of gin, mirrors, guns and pieces of dresses brought by the explorers through trade by barter. This was the beginning of slavery. Do you know that the Chinese didn’t sell their children into slavery? We are the only race that sold our children into slavery. Millions of Africans sold into slavery died. Some of the slaves went to school and fought for their own freedom. The white men came with the law and the book. They said the kings were the problems. Those who survived slavery came back and made laws without giving any space for the kingship system. They stripped the kings of their powers. It was the fault of the kings. Many of the past atrocities are showing in the ways some of our kings behave today. We still have kings who are land grabbers. If it was about land grabbing for the development of the land, it would be different. But it is sad that some kings engage in land grabbing to buy tokunbo vehicles, to buy shoes, marry wives and drink. They sell the inheritance of their towns for frivolities. On the other hand, when the democratically elected government experiences paucity of funds, instead of making life miserable for the citizens they would take loans. Kings are supposed to attract investors to the land. As a king, you don’t sell your land for peanuts. You make a deal with the land. What some kings engage in is another slavery but we need to serve the people and not milk them. When we do this, our people will have respect for us and we would gain more relevance. But what would you say about the politicians? The politicians too are doing the same now. The same way we (kings) sold our children into slavery, politicians stole all the money and that brought the people to another round of slavery. Some politicians are not serving the people but they are serving their stomachs. Politicians should be warned. The people whose money is being stolen are running away now but they will still come back to reclaim their right. Like me, the system I am running is that of service, not cheating, not selling land to marry more wives. Some believe obas exhibit splendor by marrying more wives. Do you agree? More in Home Akpata, SANs kick as northern lawyers form parallel NBA Tiwa Savage, Yemi Alade’s fans clash over superiority Lagos crash: Helicopter has no black box, says AIB Oliseh top choice for NFF Technical Director’s job Biden, Hollywood celebrities mourn Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman Those wives are not working to earn a living. How do you fend for them? A king wants to have many wives and suffer the land by making the people pay for the upkeep of those wives. Politicians too are behaving like the old corrupt kings. However, changes are gradually being brought into the polity. I am not talking about the bad eggs. But President Muhammadu Buhari came and said, ‘I am not stealing,’ just like the current governor in Osun State. The way I am running the kingship system in Iwo today, if a referendum is conducted, the people will vote for a monarchy against the democratic system of government. I am putting the politicians on their heels. They should know that the way things turned around for the kings, the same fate might befall them. They (Britons) did it in Britain by exiting the European Union. If other kings run their communities the same way as I do, I tell you that people would call for a referendum and entrench a monarchy. If a king is not serving the people, let him be removed. A king is a public servant. READ ALSO: Day hoodlums ‘charmed’ my car after failed robbery attempt on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway –Graphics designer Our forefathers muddled culture and religion up. They infused idol worshipping into culture. This should not be. Our culture and tradition are different from religion. The king is a god, the first servant to mankind is God and the kings share name with God. God is neither a Christian nor a Muslim. Jesus was not a Christian, just like Mohammed was not a Muslim because it is their followers that practice the religions after them. The kingship system is an idea of Oduduwa. Oduduwa never knew Sango because Sango came after him. There was no Oyo kingdom during the time of Oduduwa. Oduduwa didn’t worship Ogun and Sango because they were not there before him. African religion is not advanced. Imagine when the whites brought Christianity. They didn’t bring the God that destroyed the Amalekites and their infants. They brought the God of love in the New Testament. Sadly, in Africa, our culture and religion are not upgraded. You removed shrines from the palace and did not allow idol worshipping. Are you sure that your people don’t see that as a rebellion against their gods? A king is not subjected to worshipping deities and idols. A king shares a name and ways of service with God Almighty. It is not possible for me to worship idols. Although we can have festivals, they should be improved upon to elevate our tourism potential. You can’t be pouring libation on the shrines and expect people to come and watch. That is why our tourism never grows. Masquerades should be fun. Someone wear beautiful costumes. The Christians have a rallying point just as the Muslims, but for traditional worship, there is confusion because there are many deities. The only point that defines traditional worship is where the Yoruba says we must worship the head and jettison the deities. But people still worship the deities. Don’t they? It is wrong. There should not be idol worship in the palace. In the history of Yorubaland, it is in my own palace that the Muslims had their eid prayers. In Iwo, Christians would come for prayers in the palace as well as Muslims. Muslims would not pray at a place that is considered as unclean. But for the first time in the history of Yorubaland, as a result of COVID-19 when the eid praying grounds were closed, Muslims came to pray in the Oluwos palace because there are no deities here (in the palace). When I mounted the throne, I met some deities. Where are the deities now? I asked them to remove the deities because there should not be two kings in the palace. I came and defined the palace. I am representing the unseen God. The palace belongs to God, so there should be no deity here. You don’t worship God and mammon. It is neither about Christianity nor Islam. This palace is the palace of the most high God. As a king, you are supposed to take your people out of darkness. Deity worshipping is part of our history, but it should be kept in the museum by now. You can visit the museum to know where you came from. I am to deliver the message, the people will change when they see the need. For the past four years, Iwo has been progressing. I have been criticised because of the new ideology but I am resolute about alleviating the suffering of my people. Can you list some of your achievements in the past four years as Oluwo? I am the first king in history that rehabilitated a road in his domain. The Iwo-Osogbo Road is a 44-kilometre road. The road was not fixed for over 13 years. It is a major road. I fixed it with concrete and cement using my resources. When others saw me doing it, they joined me. I empower my people with interest-free loans in the three local government areas in Iwo anytime I have money. I gave them N100,000 loans; I facilitated over N1bn worth of medical equipment from the Nigerian Association of Youths of Canada. I fixed the High Court in Iwo. I facilitated the siting of the National Open University in Iwo. I went to the neighbourhood and gave the people money and food before the COVID-19 pandemic began. We were able to trace and write our history. I built a modern Arch of Triumph and put our logo on it. I facilitated Children’s Day here, against the initial practice where students go to Osogbo. I facilitated the establishment of the Federal College of Education in Iwo and this is just a tip of the iceberg. It seems you are controversial and grossly misunderstood and you recently had a crisis with one king in your domain. What is the situation now? Let me ask: Has the traditional system been working? I said the kingship position is for extortion, but it should not be. As I said, you should use the position to serve your people. What is on the ground is not glorifying. We have to change this. For me, I can stand in the desert. Even if I am in the desert, I will make it a fertile land. Ideas rule the world. Now, people start to understand. But some kings don’t want to follow my step, asking why I should be the one to champion it. I am wealthy in ideas not money. I talk more because I want people to learn from me. YOU MAY ALSO LIKE: I’ve lost my joy — Mum of peacemaker tortured to death by Naval men Did you punch the king as alleged? Let me put it on record straightaway. I didn’t punch the man as he alleged that I punched him. It was a conspiracy. Recently, you passed a comment on Asiwaju BolaTinubu. Can you explain what you said? Check Yoruba land. There is no person that can fight for us than Bola Tinubu. Let’s support him. Don’t let us treat him like we treated the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo. He is a clear leader and we should be proud of him. People betrayed Awolowo. There is no voice that is respected as Tinubu’s. Don’t let us wait until he dies. You won’t hear the northerners speak ill of their leaders. Why do we do this to ourselves? We should give him a voice but they are trying to shut him out. You did pray recently that those accusing you because you divorced your wife should have a wife like her. Why? Yes, may they have the kind of wife that will be recording the activities of her husband and say since her first day in the palace, she has been recording happenings. I want an olori that will love my people and serve them like I am serving my people and share my ideology as a queen. My queen will wear the crown. A queen that is crowned in the king palace should not be a traitor. Check yourself. Will you record your wife? There was a motive for doing that. But is that love? The wife should not be an undercover wife to the husband. So, I pray that those who criticised me because of her should have a wife like her. I have rejected that one and I have kicked her out of my life. May God give them or their children that kind of wife. Or, if they are kings, may God give them wives like her.

A legislative aide to Abiola Makinde, the member representing Ondo East/Ondo West Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Mr Adeniyi Adeyosoye, has quoted his principal as saying last Saturday’s local government elections in Ondo State exposed the unpopularity of the ruling All Progressives Congress. Makinde, who is a member of the African Democratic Congress, was said to have condemned the election, which he said was marred by irregularities. According to the aide, the APC recruited thugs, who unleashed violence in various units and wards in Ondo West and Ondo East Local Government areas, to scare voters. “They ensured that members of the APC were electoral officers; they brought out thugs with members of the NURTW to harass people, beating up everybody. “They snatched ballots boxes and took the materials to their houses and thumb-printed them. We have video evidence of this act. They engaged in the act of violence because they are not popular in the state.” He said the party was still consulting on its next line of action. Reacting to the allegations, the Ondo State APC Publicity Secretary, Mr. Alex Kalejaiye, said, “As stakeholders in the state’s project, members of the APC managed unprovoked attacks from members of the other political parties with unusual degree of maturity to ensure the success of the election.”

The Nigeria Police Force says states will be responsible for the salary and upkeep of community policemen. The Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Research and Planning, Adeleye Oyebade, said this on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme on Tuesday. Oyebade said the Nigeria Police Force remained one entity but the constables that would be recruited for community policing would be part-time officers. He said, “They are special constables and they shall be recruited as community policing officers and the process of recruitment shall be guided by Section 49 to 50 of the Nigeria Police Act. So, the special constable is going to be an auxiliary police officer. The senior police officer said the community policemen would not bear arms but would do more of intelligence gathering and tackling non-violent crimes. “They are not going to bear arms. When there are issues that need firearm usage, the police will come in and they will go together. Their role is intelligence gathering,” the DIG said. He said the community policemen would also assist the conventional police. When asked if the community policing would not be in conflict with other state security initiatives like Amotekun and Hisbah, the DIG said they would complement one another. “I am going to tell you straight away. By the time the community policing strategy and implementation come fully into operation, everybody will follow suit. Everybody will join us and follow what we are preaching and what we practise,” Oyebade added.

A total of 331,003 workers who lost their jobs have withdrawn N116.87bn from their Retirement Savings Accounts under the Contributory Pension Scheme. This amounted to 25 per cent of the total balance in their RSAs with Pension Fund Administrators as of the end of the third quarter of 2019. The National Pension Commission disclosed this in its third quarter 2019 report, which was released on Monday. Part of the report read, “Approval was granted for payment of N3.67bn to 6,862 RSA holders who were under the age of 50 years and were disengaged from work and unable to secure another job within four months of disengagement. “The cumulative total number of RSA holders who were paid benefits for temporary loss of job was 331,003 and were paid a total of N116.88bn, being 25 per cent of the balances of their RSAs as prescribed by the Pension Reform Act 2014. “A further analysis showed that the private sector accounted for 95.17 per cent of those who benefitted from these payments while the public sector accounted for 4.83 per cent.” In the report, PenCom said it sustained its effort at collaborating with social partners to drive compliance with the provisions of the PRA 2014 by the organised private sector. The commission said it continued its engagement with state governments on the implementation of the CPS. It also said it maintained its effort to enlighten and educate informal sector workers of the enormous advantages of the Micro Pension Plan. During the quarter under review, the commission said it transited from the existing Contributor Registration System to the Enhanced Contributor Registration System.

Gunmen on Monday invaded Damba-Kasaya Community in the Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State and killed one person. A villager was said to have been shot by the bandits while chasing them. The bandits, according to a resident of the area, Mallam Bawa Wakili, came in large numbers and shot sporadically. He also said the gunmen broke into the Aminci Baptist Church within the community where they destroyed musical instruments, including the public address system valued at thousands of naira. Wakili said, “They abducted many people in the village, then they went to Prince Academy and abducted many of the students who were receiving lessons for their JSS3 exams. “I cannot say how many people were kidnapped, but they went away with many people. “The villagers, not knowing that the soldiers had been withdrawn, kept pursuing the bandits in the bush, the bandits fired at them and one person was killed.” The Kaduna State Police Command had yet to confirm the incident as of press time. Sports stakeholders have expressed different opinions on the appointment of former Super Eagles forward, Daniel Amokachi, as Special Assistant on Sports to the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.). Amokachi’s appointment was announced in a press statement by the Media Office of the Minister of Youth and Sports Development on Thursday. The letter titled, ‘PMB appoints Amokachi Special Assistant, Sports’, was issued on August 17 and signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha. The statement quoted the appointment letter as reading, “I am pleased to inform you that Muhammadu Buhari, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, has approved your appointment as Special Assistant on Sports. The appointment takes effect from August 11, 2020.” Mutiu Adepoju, Amokachi’s former national teammate, described the appointment as good news for ex-footballers. “This is very positive news and I congratulate Amokachi for the appointment. This is good for him as an individual and for us,” Adepoju told The PUNCH. “This is why we’ve always called on footballers to add education to their profession, so we can have more opportunities after football.” Former Nigeria Taekwondo Federation president, George Ashiru, also applauded the appointment. “I see it as a positive move and a symbolic one by the President; it encourages ex-internationals that even after they retire, the country still finds them useful because of their experience. This will send a message to the youths that if they achieve something for the country, they will not be forgotten.” But sports journalist and administrator, Godwin Enakhena, questioned the appointment, saying it was not in the best interest of sports development in the country. “For me, it’s a waste of time. This is not what we need to take sports out of where it is right now. If Amokachi is good enough, let him be appointed as the sports minister. Don’t give a portfolio where he doesn’t have any control,” Enakhena told The PUNCH.
