Your analogy about a mechanical engineer not being able to fix a car is totally wrong and misguided. First of all, mechanical engineers don't specialize in fixing cars. Ever hared of automotive technologists

good gracious, have u heard of automotive engineer. who do u think designs internal combustion engines. who do u think lectures the automotive technologists at ITT tech or devry, that's right an engineer. engineers perform all duties including, design, analysis, servicing and repairs. all u have are annoying insults. there are elements of fixing cars that are above the knowledge of an automotive technologist from ITT tech. ur friend may be planning to have solar panels in his house but i doubt he would be the one physically installing them. if an electrical engineer can afford to have someone wire his house under supervision, why notl

guys please am interested in knowing something about george bushs credencials,
can please brief me. it might be of help 2 me in my investigation, because am currently probing him.
thanx.

george bush was a C student at Yale. why are u probing himhuh

Bill Gates may have been a dropout but he came from a rich middle-class family. how many nigerians come from a rich middle-class family. that's right not many. Bill gates is a white American, most of us won't have the same chances as he does.
CareerSchooling Is Nigeria Or Schooling Abroad? by bawomol(op): 3:03pm On Feb 06, 2008
inspired by the "are nigerian engineers competent thread". which do u think is better, a nigerian going to school abroad or a nigerian attending a naija university.

state ur reasons please.
CareerRe: Nigerian Engineers Are Not Competent? by bawomol(m): 3:01pm On Feb 06, 2008
While I feel your pain I don't think your argument that in Nigeria engineering takes 5 years while in the US and Canada it takes 3 or 4 years.

that was a stupid argument by him and an insult to engineers trained abroad. just because it took u ten years to get ur undergraduate degree doesn't make u a PHD holder. it's not our faults that nigerian universities go through strikes and rigid schedules. the stereotypical thinking that universities in the US or canada or the US are easy is plain false. i've gone through it and it sure hasn't been fun. i challenge nigeria1 to take a semester in the US and tell me if it's below standard.
CareerRe: Nigerian Engineers Are Not Competent? by bawomol(m): 2:44pm On Feb 06, 2008

I'm sorry to say, but this is what I call total nonsense integrated with complete ignorance. What has electrical engineering got to do with wiring a home or fixing light bulbs. This is classic rebranding of ignorance.

If you claim to have studied engineering in the United States, you wouldn't make such unintelligent remark about electical engineering because electrical engineering is categorised as computer engineering by IEEE and the manner of discipline gears towards PLC's, PAC's, signal processings, multiplexers, networks and so on. It is also integrated with computer science and data structure. Where does rewiring come into place. I don't know the part the globe you reside but this sheer ignorance is just not comprehendable.

pls mind ur business and dont quote me, when did i say it was the job of electrical engineers to wire a home or fix light bulbshuh?? can u guys learn to attribute comments to the actually people that posted them??
CareerRe: Nigerian Engineers Are Not Competent? by bawomol(m): 2:54am On Feb 06, 2008
I have seen people who have degree's in electrical engineering paying local electricians to wire their houses

electrical engineerings deal with the theoretical aspects of circuits and design. technicians deal with the practical aspects. electrical engineering isn't just about wires. a mechanical engineer may be unable to fix a car because his SPECIALIZATION isn't automotive engineering
CareerRe: Nigerian Engineers Are Not Competent? by bawomol(m): 2:50am On Feb 06, 2008
bawomol (m), name one USA or Canadian university engineering program with a 5 years program, Just name the university. I know University of michigan , university of toronto , even harvard are just 4 years program.

u are a confused and deranged person. all engineering programs in the US are standardized 4yr program. the average engineering degree takes 5yrs. i would be done with my mehanical engineering degree next semester(making 4.5yrs of school including summer classes). the only way u can complete 120 credit hrs in 3year is if u have lots of AP credits from high school. go to MIT,georgia tech, Duke, University of Illinois and tell them u want to finish ur engineering degree in 3yrs. they would laugh at u and slap u back to nigeria.

What is outdated with laplace transformation or circuit thoery, or DSP . it is the same all over the world. either in Russia, China or anywhere

laplaces transforms aren't outdated. we just don't do em by hand anymore. there's something called a computer. Matlab does laplace transforms. no need for wasting paper.

Look the educational system in the USA and canada is below international standard

yes, harvard, duke, howard, MIT, IIT, grinell, cornell, Princeton, U of I etc are below standard. keep on making a mockery of urself.

that why chinese student do well in USA or Canada school

the claim that all chinese students do well is exaggerated. asians students are good but alot of them are average. they are just more driven to attend graduate school unlike americans that go for the money after bachelors. i would like to invite u to come take a fluid mechanics or heat transfer course here in the US. after u are done with the class, i bet ur ass wouldn't say shit about international standards.

They have taken this courses in a low grade, not that chinese are smart?? NO, they just redo the courses because they have a better educational system.

start listing courses asians have to redo, if chinese education is so great, why do they come to the US??
Christianity EtcRe: Scientists Create First Synthetic Genome by bawomol(op): 7:09pm On Feb 05, 2008
i think cloning is a more important step than being able to create synthetic unicellular organims.

clone is an INTERMEDIATE step. creating artificial life starts from the scratch. this is unreached territory we are talking about.
CareerRe: Nigerian Engineers Are Not Competent? by bawomol(m): 7:07pm On Feb 05, 2008
Engineering in the USA or Canada is just 4 years, some even 3 years. in nigeria it is 5 or 6 years now.

yeah right, where did u get ur engineering degree from in 3years, devry university??

So master degree in the USA or Canada is the equivalent of a first degree in Nigeria

what, read what u just typed again.
Christianity EtcRe: Scientists Create First Synthetic Genome by bawomol(op): 6:51pm On Feb 05, 2008
u're simply making noise. Did you address any of my questions?
A unicellular organism is of course considered living but sit down and think first! The human body is made up of billions of cells . . . many of which have distinct functions and do not express the same genes.

The human genome has not been fully decoded . . and u think scientists will be creating human life in 50yrs? Where are you from? Mars?

Did you know that brain cells are vastly different from skin cells? Did you know that cardiac muscle is not the same as skeletal muscle? Let scientists design a synthetic human cell first before you start telling me about BS.

lmao, what's the defensive stance for. centuries ago, no one believes man would be able to create airplanes or look at things smaller than atoms. guess what, those can be achieved today. the area of bioresearch is rapidly progress. the creation of artificial life is a win for science and stab to religion. a synthetic genome isn't BS but a scientifically breakthrough.

everything is about ethnic groups to u guys. this board is just so hostile.
CareerRe: Nigerian Engineers Are Not Competent? by bawomol(m): 5:55pm On Feb 05, 2008
Technicians fix and repair. The problem we have in Nigeria you and other Engineers have not designed anything for Nigeria. Most of you do fixing and repairs which is the duty of Technicians.

this is where i disagree a bit with ishmael. i doubt it's technicians that perform the repair of space shutters. it's engineers that usually perform the inspection and supervision of those.
CareerRe: Nigerian Engineers Are Not Competent? by bawomol(m): 5:43pm On Feb 05, 2008
again, you are displaying your ignorance. from autocad 2007 up, AutoCAD is fully 3D integrated. they had to do it, google sketchup was becoming way too popular. as it is, i do any of my 3D in sketchup. i'm using autocad 2008, but i haven't really had time to go 3D with it.

i would say Pro-E is a better 3d sofware than AutoCAD which i find primitive. but let's agree to disagree. one question though, do u think most nigerian engineers have access to such softwares. Yes or no.

as to warez/torrents - seek and you shall find. Like everyone else, i started from pc village. then i moved on to downloading apps, and hitting crack websites. now i'm onto warez forums.

warez and torrents are illegal and punishable by law by the way(i do use them though). why do u think it's hard for nigerian engineers or universities to get proper licenses to use these softwareshuh

as to your comments on the average nigerian engineer - how many engineers do you know personally? or are you, like ishmael speaking from a third person perspective?

i know a few but not enough to say they are all incompetent. ishmael and I have different arguments lol.

BTW, i have never gone for any out of country training. everything i know, i learnt here.

great for u, but why do u think foreign expatriates are given more leverage than Nigerian trained engineers.
CareerRe: Nigerian Engineers Are Not Competent? by bawomol(m): 5:38pm On Feb 05, 2008
well sorry if my post was not clear enough. i should have added the "some" prefix. i never meant ALL of them. now can we avoid the insults and get back to the topic.
CareerRe: Nigerian Engineers Are Not Competent? by bawomol(m): 5:29pm On Feb 05, 2008
You are a glorified mechanic thats all.

damn that's harsh.
CareerRe: Nigerian Engineers Are Not Competent? by bawomol(m): 5:28pm On Feb 05, 2008

first of all, you don't even know that autodesk is not software, but a company that makes ahost of design applications, of which AutoCAD is the flagship product

first of all, i know autodesk is a company. AutoCAD isn't the flagship product anymore due to it's limited use for 3d design. autoCAD is more prevalent as an undergraduate tutoring class.

secondly, i chose not to list all the engineering applications I'm proficeient in( abi you think say i wan post my cv? Grin)

we are talking about the average nigerian engineer not an excellent one like u.

you are also confuing 'programming' with computer litracy. aside from tweaking of some autocad lisp files, and a teensy weensy bit of visual basic, i'm a programming neophyte

this is the thing i'm talking about, computer programming is becoming integrated into engineering. it's hard to perform numerical or stress analysis without minimal knowledge in MATLAB, MAPLE or whatever. engineers have to be technologically savvy with the new age of mechatronics and micro machining.

it is a waste of resources trying to learn ALL the software in the world. just learn what you need at the moment.

actually it's better if u have a BASIC knowledge of them and how they work. u never know what u need some day. again we are slamming u guys. but the educational system in nigeria has to catch up. not everyone has warez or torrents u know huh

CareerRe: Nigerian Engineers Are Not Competent? by bawomol(m): 5:16pm On Feb 05, 2008
i would also like to see the post where i said EVERY nigerian engineer is incompetent. people are getting to defensive here. we may be criticizing the work Nigerian engineers but we are not slamming them or calling them irrelevant.
CareerRe: Nigerian Engineers Are Not Competent? by bawomol(m): 5:13pm On Feb 05, 2008
if you judge EVERY Nigerian Engineer as incompetent just because a few were being sent overseas, that'd make you pretty foolish, wouldn't you say?

i didn't say they were incompetent. i just said on average they were not up to par with their counterparts. engineering degrees from countries such as india or japan have more credence abroad. yes there are some excellent nigerian engineers but more needs to be done

The article wasn't about whether american engineers were on average more competent that their Nigerian counterparts. it was whether Nigerian Engineers were competent. Shame your comprehension skills lag behind your Engineering skills.

it's strange u have resorted to insults. i was just making a comparison. my stance is that nigerian engineers are decent but they have ways to go before gaining more credibility. why can't one have a argument on these board without insults or attacking comprehension skills or intelligence??
CareerRe: Nigerian Engineers Are Not Competent? by bawomol(m): 4:58pm On Feb 05, 2008
However, the major issue should be how Nigeria should utilise these expertise to become most productive and improve development

Nigerian engineers abroad should be invited home. that can only be possible if their personal safety and job security is ensured. if Nigerian engineers are that competent, why are they been sent to Denmark for technical training. are american engineers sent to Singapore for technical training.
CareerRe: Nigerian Engineers Are Not Competent? by bawomol(m): 4:56pm On Feb 05, 2008
as to nigerian engineers not being skilled in software - thats bullshit!i use autocad, autoCAD MEP, Dialux, Sketchup, and a plethora of design apps. i have a friend who is a PDMS guru. i spoke to another today, who is about to do AVEVA's PDMS accreditation.

the problem here is that most of the posters don't know didly about what engineering is about

i'm sorry, autoCAD is just one of the few 3d design softwares available, there's ProE, autodesk and a host of others. not that nigerians don't use it, but american engineers are usually more advanced due to their exposure to C++ and java programming from highschool(i barely saw computers in secondary school while in nigeria). i only learnt how to use matlab and linux in college. to get accredited as an engineer in the US, many engineerings have to take the PE and FE exams.

take a look at the ASME website and u would see a host of classes, tutorials and software packages easily available. do nigerian engineers have easy access to this.

Christianity EtcRe: Say No To Religion! Science Is The Truth by bawomol(m): 4:46pm On Feb 05, 2008
The fact that the big bang remains a theory indicates that science is yet to come up with rationale evidence as to how the earth was formed.

no scientists have different theories on the creation of the earth but the big bang is the most popular one. there's evidence that can be seen from rocks and elements deep in the earths core. the explosion and merger of stars in the galaxy is another one. where's ur proof for genesis?? it's strange u believe some entity created earth in seven days but find it hard to believe in the big bang??

Surprisingly 99% of the human genome is identical to everyone else

this is wrong, our closest related is the bonobo. other animals carry some of our DNA imprint but not that close. give the credit to evolution.

so that again is no surprise that we share some characteristics of our DNA with apes

it actually should be a surprise given that primates such as chimpanzees have the ability to use primitive tools but their brain isn't big enough to perform more complex tasks. again science has research back it. what's ur proof that the boogie man exists or the earth was created by abracadabra.
Christianity EtcRe: Scientists Create First Synthetic Genome by bawomol(op): 4:38pm On Feb 05, 2008
Let them create life first.

what happens after they create life?
