Nigerians are, generally, intelligent people. It is absolutely shameful that we should have such failures in our educational system.
i believe this is a statement we make to make ourselves feel good. We promote guys like wole soyinka and chinua achebe but forget about the millions who were left behind.  The rot in the Nigerian educational system didn't just started in the new millennium but a result of decades of neglect.    The few that have made it gives us the false illusion that we are generally intelligent.

Quack programs like the PTF have done nothing to reverse this rot.

How are you so sure she was dating this old pervert?  Maybe he was sexually abusing her?  One young girl who was sexually abused said it felt good downstairs but bad upstairs refering to her genitials and her head.

Im happy you all havent abandoned her
or it could be the daddy issues. either way such behaviors/acts aren't normal.   the old perv needs to be chilling in jail with his name on a sex offenders list if this was obodo oyinbo.

My parents did all the wrong(s) this world could endure, But today i realized they only made me a better person
you most likely become a better person regardless of the bad things they did and not because of the bad things they did.

In one post I made, I called her a 'lost soul'. She's trying to find her path but she just doesn't know how. You know, sometimes I think the whole banging on the head must have loosend a nut. I dont know, just a thought!  undecided
has she tried talking to a professional, pastor, counseling etc?

what's she trying to do career wise. the last thing she needs are men taking advantage of her fragile mental and financial state. men love women with daddy issues.

Ujujoan I agree children are all different my youngest brother was a nightmare he got into trouble the most.

I pity your sister but she needs to let go and not allow it to ruin her life. Its so easy for me to say not going thru what she went thru. Its a shame her intelligence was not spotted earlier and channelled into other things.  Can you not have a honest conversation with her.  Its not fair shes been left to waste away
she needs therapy.   but mental health issues are shrugged off in nigeria and the black community at-large. the saying that what doesn't kill you helps you has permeated nigerian society at large.   You have folks in here who obviously struggle to suppress their past experiences of abuse.   threads like these are therapeutic for them.

if the kids are too many then what's the point? Huh

besides, remembering birthdays involves spending money. Nigeria is a poor country and anyway we mark religious holidays so knock on wood
remembering birthdays doesn't have to involve spending money. a simple card from hallmark can help.

too many kids? then get a damn calendar.  these are little things that makes a child feel appreciated. money isn't everything
i guess birthdays are meant for the rich

@ bawomolo.how u dey my broda, just got back from una area (hyde blvd- South Connell drive) which neighbourhood are u in,

what's the big deal about sex education sef.
the only children that need explicit sex education in my opinion are the ones that start having sex early (maybe due to bad friends etc). and such a child is probably already a lost cause.
most decent kids don't really need it.
lol this doesn't make sense.  what's decent to you may not be decent to me

My dads gift for getting good grades were either Further Math Project by Sivasubramaniam or Godman textbooks
you and your pops need a special on Dr.Phil grin

Mom's mistake is that she relates everything that happens in our house to some supernatural stuffs/As the cause of witches . Even if a mosquito over-bite mom or any of us mom will immediately carry her bible and engage  in a verbal war with some unseen spirit and all we hear is "die die by fire die by fire shira baba buska buska shaba shaba " . This attitude changed my younger brother's attitude that they view any unfortunate occurrence or petty accident  as the handiwork of the devil, Like when my youngest brother came third in his class' promotional exam though he used to be the first  he came home saying " it's the handiwork of the devil that somehow in the exam hall he could not see anything .Dad's hot slap descended on his face before he finished and mom took him to her room laid her hands on his head and was buskaing shirababaing roboskotoing , Damn ! it really got me pissed ,

Dad's mistake is he never allow us to stay in the kitchen when mom's cooking . Mom believed that she's teaching us to cook but dad always object and he made mom stopped it , we thought it was a good thing not until i had to start cooking myself , I burnt foods and added too much salt to the food .I could not even make a pap and the garri(eba ) do have lots of lumps  embarassed embarassed embarassed
