Politics / Obasanjo’s Visit To El-rufai by Bazamfare: 12:10pm On Dec 20, 2019
Obasanjo’s recent visit to the Governor of Kaduna State,Malam Nasir el-Rufai, has dominated the media the past one week. During the visit, the former President reportedly reflected on the Kaduna state governor’s spat with the senate when he was Federal Capital Territory (FCT) minister and his refusal to apologise to the red chamber when he fell out with them during his confirmation hearing.

Following from these Obasanjo concluded: “We need a character like this; a man that you know where you stand with him. Any job given to him will be well done,” the former president added. Obasanjo was further quoted as saying that El Rufai, who was also at one time the DG of the Bureau of Public Enterprises during the Obasanjo administration, was“one of the best persons to work with. He is a near genius.”

“I made women matter in my government. He has done the same in Kaduna. He is a very good learner,” Obasanjo, who is often criticised for wanting to take credit for achievements of persons or institutions remotely connected with him, was equally reported to have said. On his own, el-Rufai credited a substantial part of whatever skills he learnt in public service to his tutelage under the Ota farmer. He was quoted as saying: “Obasanjo is a mentor; I learnt many public service skills from him while I served as a minister under his government.”

There are a number of speculations surrounding the visit:

One, photos of el-Rufai and Obasanjo during the visit showed them in ear-to-ear grin. But those photos and wide grins masked an ugly feud from the past. For instance in his book, The Accidental Public Servant (2013), el-Rufai sought to belittle Obasanjo by claiming that he went on bended knees to beg Atiku to support his re-election bid in 2003 because Obasanjo knew that without Atiku’s support it would have been over for him politically. He also argued that Obasanjo foisted a sick Yar’adua and a largely incompetent Jonathan on the country not out of patriotism but as revenge against Nigerians for denying him a third term. Obasanjo, in his own book, My Watch (2015) disparaged el-Rufai as a pathological liar whose only loyalty is to himself, and not to anyone else. While quarrelling and making up may be part of the fluid alliance system that underpins our politics, (which is said to be driven primarily by personal interest), it may be tempting to speculate on the interest that both Obasanjo and el-Rufai now share in common.

Two, why was it necessary for Obasanjo to visit el-Rufai in Kaduna, rather than el-Rufai visiting Obasanjo at his presidential library in Ota or any other of his residences? Given el-Rufai’s rumoured presidential ambition in 2023, the traditional pattern is that those seeking for political offices pay homage to the political godfathers, not the other way round. Many of Obasanjo’s private visits to governors in the past have been in the context of either commissioning a project in the state or as a sideline of another major event.

Following from this, Obasanjo visiting el-Rufai to support his presidential ambition by innuendo opened a vista for several speculations: Is Obasanjo in a sort of crisis over the extent of his influence such that he now had to go to support a putative candidate’s presidential aspirations when such support has apparently not been requested? Is Obasanjo feeling that el-Rufai is the anointed candidate of a certain power bloc and he wants to ingratiate himself to that bloc? Could it be that Obasanjo is trying to align himself with what some people regard as “the progress made so far in Kaduna state”? Given the disastrous outing of the African Democratic Congress which Obasanjo supported during the last election, and having failed to stop the re-election of President Buhari, is Obasanjo simply seeking for continued relevance?

Three, Obasanjo is often said to be a master of timing. While his voices or moves are rarely anything out of the ordinary, however given his networks and connections, his moves quite often accentuate the trajectory of a particular conversation. El-Rufai has been dropping hints of his ambition to run for the presidency. As a Nigerian, he has the right to aspire for any office in the land. This means that the visit will most likely boost his putative ambition. But I also feel that making himself a front runner or major candidate so early in the game carries enormous risks that outweigh the benefits. Yes, it may guarantee him good media space and invitations to public engagements but it will equally attract distractions, including from fortune hunters – not to talk of making the work of opposition researchers easier.

Four, if Obasanjo’s visit to el-Rufai has remotely anything to do with the Kaduna governor’s rumoured political ambition, then Obasanjo, at this stage of the game, will have to find a very creative argument for supporting that ambition – at a time when many people from the south, Obasanjo’s home constituency, expect power to be rotated to that zone. It should be recalled that the 2015 election was fought and won on the shadows of the 2011 zoning controversy. At that time, many people from the north felt that given the power rotation agreement between the north and the south, that Jonathan, who became president after the death of Umaru Yar’adua, should simply serve out Yar’adua’s remaining term and allow the north to complete their turn of eight years. The feeling of being cheated in 2011 was therefore one of the most potent drivers of the 2015 election in the northern part of the country. During the zoning controversy of 2011, Obasanjo backed Jonathan largely on the premise that it was important for an ethnic minority, especially one from the Niger Delta that lays the country’s golden eggs, to be given a sense of belonging. So what argument would Obasanjo use to support the retention of power in the North in 2023 – when power rotation and restructuring are likely to be important drivers of the politics of 2023?

Five, if Obasanjo’s visit was meant to express his political preference for 2023, it also behoves on the electorate to interrogate the quality of candidates Obasanjo endorsed or supported in the past. From Shehu Shagari in 1979, Yar’adua in 2007, Jonathan in 2011 and Buhari, in 2015, Obasanjo turned into a rabid critic of all these candidates he had passionately supported, accusing each of incompetence and sundry malfeasances. This raises an important question: if Obasanjo has a way of turning again his own candidates, can we trust his judgment or are we better off turning against anyone he anoints? This was the strategy of Alan Greenspan, who famously attributed his successes as chair of the Federal Reserve of the United States from 1987 to 2006 to the fact that he always did the opposite of the advice received from the two Bretton Woods institutions – the World Bank and the IMF. Perhaps it may be time for the country to take such an approach towards Obasanjo’s anointed candidates for any political office.

Our people can never live in a terrorized country if Nigeria divides because we will naturally be allied with Igbos and we will expel all Hausa fulani settlers from our midst back to the core-north....

I will always refer to history cos foóls like you think Nigeria is just all you see today....
The middlebelt tribes of Plateau, SK, Gongola (Taraba & Adamawa), Nasarawa & Benue remain a sleeping giant in Nigeria who will shake Nigeria to it's roots whenever we wake up and unite to a common cause.

Wow betide you almajiris if we then decide to unite with Igbos & Niger deltans for a common agitation.... I promise u, you will experience this awakening in your lifetime!

Yes our people were not forced to claim Arewa but it was promoted by our colonial masters and we foolishly fell for it. The tide is now changing, wait for it.

Facts!!!

I'm glad Buhari didn't go into an alliance with with Igbo, it was a blessing in disguise they rejected him.. because if he had entered into one, we core north would have abandoned him
Iamgrey5:
It was not until Buhari got 12 million votes from CPC that Nigeria politicians started taking him seriously.

His presidency was inevitable at that point because he became the most powerful politician in Nigeria at that point.

He eventually got what he needed by forming an alliance with ACN that had influence in close to 7 to 8 states then.

Oyo

Osun

Ogun

Lagos

Edo

Ekiti to an extent

Ondo to an extent.

Had a Senator in Kogi and Benue state.

Also PDP governors and senators that defected.

None of these could have been achieved by a simple alliance with igbos.

There was no time I said MB votes didn't make a difference, why are you desperately trying to put words into my mouth!! What I said was "minority votes are insignificant".. when I'm talking about "minority", I'm referring to Benue,Platue, SK, not MB in general.. Buhari lost Benue, Platue and SK, but he still won, so they are clearly insignificant as how I stated

Lol. How was 2019 election a sham, because it didn't suit you? There was only violence in kogi state in the north throughout out the election.. even the international observers were satisfied and gave it a pass mark, only wailers thought otherwise grin

There are a lot of Benue and Platue indigenes that voted for Buhari, I know u didn't expect that, considering the Fulani herdsmen propaganda you guys were fed with, fortunately not everyone was as gullible as you!! grin cheesy u were stunt and perplexed when u saw Buhari get those votes, especially how you made threads on how Buhari can't win any state in the MB!! grin grin

We said Igbo are "insignificant politically", but they are good in commerce and business.. while you guys are insignificant in everything in general, you guys come all the way to Abuja to do maiguard, prostitution, talla etc

Or do you have anyone like Dangote, BUA, Azman etc?

Nowenuse:

Your first paragraph is pointless and useless because in spite of Buhari being in an unknown party in 2011, he still swept the entire votes of the core-north and Hausa fulani areas.

Yoruba and middlebelt votes made the difference in 2015, nothing else.

2019 was not an election but a pure sham.
Buhari still got 40-45% of votes in Benue and Plateau...... How did this happen?
According to you, "it has to be the indigenous Muslims in those places that have him those votes". grin

Besides, no problem, we like that we are insignificant, afterall you people call the Igbos insignificant too, yet their achievements are all over the world.
It's just a matter of time for our people and the Igbos to leave this useless country then we know who is truly insignificant. Nonsense.

Femi Orebe
I have said it over and over; we are not organised and we often act on impulse. The Fulani think 50 years ahead , but we think and romanticise with yesterday. We celebrate achievements of yesterday as if they are more important than the future. What is going on is an organised sub-regional plan to establish a Nigeria that fits into their own dream. When are we going to play the flute because every time we rush to the agenda they throw in our midst and we start panting? They dictate the pace of our Politics and power game. Unfortunately our networking is so weak that we hardly have any meeting point , complete with all the strategic groups across Yorubaland” – Akaraoogun.

For those who may not know, I have more than established my bona fides as a supporter of President Muhammadu Buhari. When he was not even sure he would emerge the APC Presidential candidate in 2015, I had written concerning him, saying: ”Nigeria, in its current dire straits, needs Buhari more than he needs Nigeria”.

But that is not all, as can be confirmed by the following attestations.

“Buhari: The Politics of Age By Professor Tam David-West

October 14, 2014.

“Nigeria, in its current dire straits needs Buhari more than he needs Nigeria.” –

Femi Orebe

“The Nation On Sunday” September 28, 2014 Page 18″.

“Daddy Orebe is the most misunderstood person in recent times because his traducers don’t read their story lines well before reacting to his deeply informed analysis. He has spoken clearly on restructuring, herdsmen’s menace, insecurity and other issues. People misunderstand him because he will not join the league of naysayers”. – Dr Sikiru Eniola on Ekiti Panupo.

”Thank you so much sir. You have tried your best to give the leaders of today a long opportunity to prove themselves but the failure on their part has become so glaring” – Akaraoogun Adewale Adeoye on Ekiti Panupo.

”Sir. You said I am supporting a Malam Kwankwaso but you failed to mention that Nigerians always read your articles about how a Fulani man is the best leader Nigeria should have. Now the splendid performance is there for Nigerians to see”. –

Tokunbo Omolase on Facebook.

I wrote all the above to show, in unmistakable terms, not just where I stand on the Nigerian political spectrum, but to let President Buhari himself know that in asking what are bound to be thoroughly uncomfortable, if not ‘nauseating’ questions, they are not coming from enemy territory. Rather, they are coming from the tortured soul of a supporter of his, who has been at the receiving end of almost daily flagellation by those Nigerians who say I was one of those who sold them ‘a pig in a poke’ as well as the most tribalistic, and insular, Nigerian president, ever.

Even though, I will not go as far as to describe the president in those lurid terms, I often, in fairness to the critics, personally wonder as to how the president still manages to sleep, that is, if he is able to sleep, when he takes a hard look at how the North has come to so completely dominate the Nigerian public space under his watch to the extent that one would be right to say Nigeria is under a northern stranglehold.

Worse, really, is the fact that this seeming internal colonialism shows no signs of remission as various stratagems are ongoing, an example being the case of the Federal Commission on Nomadic Education, which has failed miserably in its core function given the number of out-of-school children in that part of the country, but is now coyly trying to embed itself in the contentious grazing reserves matter which many have said is aimed at sexing up Nigeria’s demographics in favour of the Fulani.

Mr President, Sir, I belong to many Whatsapp groups apart from individuals with the result that I have up to 1000 entities I receive chats from.

Many from these sources are daily bombarding me, as one of your arch supporters, with questions I haven’t the capacity to answer.

To these I shall return.

Like Dr Junaid Mohammed, US-based Professor Farooq A. Kperogi has in fact gone to the extent of describing your government as ‘Government of Buhari’s Family, by His Family, and for His Family’. He writes further: Before he was sworn in as President in May 2015, Muhammadu Buhari, without prompting from anybody, publicly told his immediate and extended family members to stand back from his incoming government. He even warned that any family member who used his name to peddle influence would face dire consequences”. ”I was so impressed by this declaration that in my May 16, 2015 column titled “6 Reasons Why Incoming Buhari Government Fills Me with Hope,” I isolated it as one of the six reasons I thought Buhari’s administration would “represent a qualitative departure from the legalised banditry that has passed for governance in Nigeria for so long.” Specifically, he continued: “Buhari’s symbolic but nonetheless significant gestures like telling family members to steer clear of his government and telling aides to obey traffic laws inspire me.”

I remember the president saying that and I was beside myself with joy. You could have ridden a horse in my belly. But all those soon dramatically changed that the First Lady had to cry out, protesting what she called a hijack of your government. I thought that was impossible.

Back then to my Whatsapp groups and friends where all that the First Lady complained of, important as they are, pales into almost nothing as the questions these ones raise, are so telling and Pan –

Nigerian; far beyond family.

If His Excellency would kindly overlook the impertinence, could you please get the Presidency – no, not you in person Mr President, to provide answers to the following posers from a younger friend of mine, an Ekiti like me and retired Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Nigeria – a Ph.D holder to boot – who has seen something of the world, but never ceases to taunt me with questions pertaining to ‘our’ administration.

The latest, which came via a Whatsapp chat, goes as follows:

“Oga (Ekiti salutation for elders), these are your latest achievements at the NEXT LEVEL. Any comment?

He didn’t have to repeat the ‘any comment’, as he always, unerringly, got a defence from me whenever he sends me these inquisitorial chats, which is almost daily.

This time around, Your Excellency, I am in a complete fix, and so do need help. Indeed, to taunt me maximally, he wrote that this one is only an observation.

Here they go:

“Finance, Customs, Immigration, FIRS, NPA, NNPC, AMCON, NDIC, Federal Mortgage Bank, are now firmly in the hands of northerners!

Executive, Legislature, the Judiciary, Police, DSS, Armed Forces, minus the CDS, Oil, Airports and Seaports, are all in the hands of northerners.

The rout is complete.

Chief of Army Staff tenure is over. He is still in office

Chief of Naval Staff tenure is over. He is still in office.

EFCC acting Chairman’s tenure is over. He is still in office.

But FIRS boss, Tunde Fowler’s tenure expired today and he is already replaced”.

As I indicated above, I know that the First Lady had once observed that you do not know many of those working in your government, but that notwithstanding, I think it is necessary I remind your Excellency, that Nigeria presently has no less than 250 ethnic groups divided into six geo – political zones . Under no circumstances should all these happen as they are totally unconscionable, and a matter of great discomfort for us your supporters in this part of the country. It is extremely nauseating that a part can so torridly dominate the rest when those others are no slaves.

No genuine supporter of yours can be happy, or roll out the drums, for this state of affairs as they are not only unthinkable, but ungodly. It is even worse, given Nigeria’s current realities of mass poverty, unremitting insecurity, all on top of a seeming northernisation policy, as if the other ethnic groups are non- Nigerians. Unfortunately, Nigerians are not hearing a word from non northern APC leaders as to what negative consequences all these may have on the party come 2023, and one begins to wonder as to how they explain all these to their people. This failure on their part can serve as a mitigating factor for the President, but even then, it would be pointless and unhelpful,

Whatever the president can do to correct these incredible anomalies will be of great help to the party, will mollify the people, and most probably, secure a positive legacy for you.

Otherwise all your positive contributions to Nigeria, at these extremely difficult times, may come to naught, which I pray, God forbid.

Why are you making reference to history, something that has already passed!?!? "If this, if that, if only", like WTF!! History has already layed precedent for the reality we are in, there is no way u could rewind or teleport and change things, so u have to live with that.. no amount of "if" will change that!!!

Whether the north would have been backwards, underdeveloped, landlocked and terrorized(lol. as if minority MB won't be in the same scenario) if Nigeria had broke up, its subjective and non applicable since is has not happened

Lol. You said "Besides, the majority of our people have been identifying as Arewa and voting Hausa fulani candidates for many years until recently.".. were you doing us a favor, or did we put a gun to ur head and forces to do that?!?! You did that out of ur volition... and when u stopped voting us what happened, did that stopped us from governing and ruling Nigeria!?!!, Buhari lost Benue, Platue, SK and Taraba states, but still won the presidential election..See how ur talking and sounding like a illiterate fool grin cheesy
Nowenuse:

Besides, if not for our people who fought against Igbos in the Biafran war, do you think the so called Nigeria your people take as their property would have been existing today?

Nigeria would have long been divided and you core-northerners would have been living in a heavily secluded, landlocked and terrorized nation and would have been no different from Niger republic.
Besides, the majority of our people have been identifying as Arewa and voting Hausa fulani candidates for many years until recently.

So get that into your thick almajiri skull that without us, the political leverage u people have in Nigeria today would have been non-existent!

Hahaha I see how desperate u are as usual to make a point!! We all know the permutations and scenarios in 2011 were totally different to current realities.. In 2011, Buhari contested under CPC, a party that was formed overnight with no single Governor, LG chairman, senator or HR and he was still able to pull over 12m votes, something Atiku couldn't do under the mega party PDP in 2019

When I say "minority and insignificant", I'm referring to SK, Benue and Platue state that we don't share anything in commone in terms of culture, religion etc

Buhari also lost Adamawa, kwarra, kogi and nasarawa states who are regard as allies.. so clearly its not because of "minority and insignificant" states Buhari lost elections, but from other states and factors that I stated above that were highly not in his favor

to show you just how insignificant and useless u are, Buhari lost Benue, SK, Platue and Taraba states, but still won the presidential election in 2019.. do you see how pathetic you people are! grin
Nowenuse:

These same group of people u say are insignificant are the reason Buhari lost in 2011 and won in 2015 cos it has been proven that with or without Yorubas votes, Buhari would have still won in 2015, so tell me what changed.
