ABX first Nigerian company to join global G.A.P

http://thenationonlineng.net/abx-first-nigerian-company-join-global-g-p/

An indigenous agro-allied solutions provider: Air Business Express Limited (ABX World) has joined Global Good Agricultural Practice (Global G.A.P), which sets worldwide standards for safe and sustainable agriculture.

ABX World, a first class globally recognized courier/cargo firm is the only Nigerian Company to attain the height, with a target to liberate Nigerians from economic slavery.

Global G.A.P. members according to the firm creates private sector incentives for agricultural producers worldwide to adopt safe and sustainable practices to make the world a better place to live in for the global community.

According to the firm, its mission is to globally connect farmers and brand owners, like notable supermarkets in Europe and North America, in the production and marketing of safe food to provide reassurance for consumers.

The Group, the firm said, lays the foundation for the protection of scarce resources by the implementation of Good Agricultural Practices with a promise for a sustainable future.

In a letter endorsed by Global G.A.P CEO, Dr. Kristian Moeller, he said ABX World has become part of producers and suppliers members who “demonstrate their commitment to fully comply with the Global G.A.P.

“Standard and hereby act as industry leaders in Good Agricultural Practice (G.A.P). As members, they are entitled to use the Global G.A.P. logo and represent their producer interests in the Global G.A.P. governance structure. In this position they may act as a driver for innovation in their market and profit from first mover advantages”.

Speaking on the achievement, Captain John Okakpu, MD/CEO of ABX World Limited, expressed delight over the Global G.A.P membership status, adding that the feat would help place Nigeria in the global agricultural export map.

Captain Okakpu said that ABX World is the new face of agro-allied export in the country and fashioned to train farmers and others within the logistics and supply chain.

“The global network that we operate at ABX World is very richly enhanced by our strategic alliances with some of the biggest and best players in the industry as follows; Pilot Air Freight based in USA, including local national certifications by NCAA and FAAN.

Speaking on sundry agricultural export development in the country, Capt. Okakpu urged the Federal, State and Local Governments not to relent on efforts to get the country’s agricultural programmes on the right track.

Citing Anambra State Government’s strides in this regard, the ABX World Boss said “Solutions to the nation’s economic challenges are no quick fixes; however, agriculture is that sector that can do it for us. Years ago when we started this journey, many people thought it was a child’s play or one of those cacophonic statements and blabbing. Today, with this membership, ABX World is positioned to change the face of agro-allied industry in Nigeria. We are going to train farmers in different certifications, while leveraging the network to bring in off-takers like we are doing in Anambra State. Chief Willie Obiano’s administration has shown a complete total commitment in agriculture and desire to be the leading agricultural export state in Nigeria.

“It is heart-warming that Anambra State Government has taken the bull by the horn, dolling out N1.5billion SMEs loans program at nine per cent single interest rate; accessible to farmers. This is what the country needs! The most encouraging of all is the airfreight subsidy which of course empowers the farmers to be able to transport their product overseas without quagmires. This will boost the confidence level of off-takers and boost agricultural state in the State; others can emulate this gesture.

“I am encouraging every State Government to accept this ‘proposal of economic restoration through agriculture’ which ABX World presents to all. It is not the time to curry cheap political gains by engaging on unsavory and verbal attacks on opponents; rather we must close ranks to achieve this goal.

“Why I am particular about this development? It wouldn’t have come at a better time than now President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration has launched ‘Green Alternative’ project. It is laudable, only if fully implemented”.

He however advised SMEs, especially those in the agricultural sector to leverage franchise business model to better their worth even in the present economic recession.

Captain Okakpu said that leading food and other supply chains in Europe and other parts of the world thrive through franchise business.

“It pains me seeing young Nigerians sweat from day to day without results. The single reason is that most of us are ‘myopic’ about franchise business ventures. Why open clusters of shops in Alaba market, Alade, Ladipo, or whichever market while ten of you can leverage a big brand’s name to do business without qualms. Let our people think out of the box. Look at what Slot Systems is doing in the phone retail business; people are now using Slot’s name to set up businesses, because it is a reputable brand. Very soon, such things will begin to happen in the agric sector. We can’t folds our hands waiting for the government while we perish in penury. Now is the time to work the talks”, he concluded.

History
Atlantic slave trade

The Igbo were affected heavily by the Atlantic slave trade in the 18th century. Enslaved Igbo were known for being rebellious and having a high count of suicide in defiance of slavery.[2][3][4] In the United States the Igbo were most numerous in the states of Maryland (coincidentally where there is a predominant population of recent Igbo immigrants)[5] and Virginia,[6] so much so that some historians have denominated colonial Virginia as “Igbo land.”[7]

With a total of 37,000 Africans that arrived in Virginia from Calabar in the 18th century, 30,000 were Igbo according to Douglas B. Chambers.[6] The Frontier Culture Museum of Virginia estimates around 38% of captives taken to Virginia were from the Bight of Biafra.[8] Igbo peoples constituted the majority of enslaved Africans in Maryland.[6] Chambers has been quoted saying "My research suggests that perhaps 60 percent of black Americans have at least one Igbo ancestor..."[9]
Virginia
Slave notice from Williamsburg, Virginia for a runaway "Ibo Negro"

Virginia was the colony that took in the largest percentage of Igbo slaves. Researchers such as David Eltis estimate between 30—45% of the 'imported' slaves were from the Bight of Biafra, of these slaves 80% were likely Igbo. A so-called conservative estimate of the amount of Igbo taken into Virginia between 1698 and 1778 is placed at 25,000. The Igbo concentration was especially high in the Tidewater and Piedmont regions of the Virginia interior.[10] One of the reasons for this high number of Igbo slaves in Virginia was the domination of the Bight of Biafra region of Africa by Bristol and Liverpool English merchants who frequently brought Bight of Biafra slaves to British colonies, Virginia being one of these colonies. The high concentration of Igbo slaves in Virginia was contributed to further by neighboring states. Planters in South Carolina and Georgia looked down on Igbo slaves because many were rebellious. Because of this the majority of Igbo slaves were taken and sold to Virginian planters.

Some possible Igbo names were also found among slave records in Virginia. Names found in records such as Anica, or Anakey, Breechy and Juba may originate respectively from the Igbo names Nneka, meaning the mother is superior, and mburichi, male members of the Kingdom of Nri and Jiugba, meaning yam barn. Some had their ethnicity added to their names such as Eboe Sarah and plain Ebo.[11][12] These hints of Igbo influence go along with cultural remnants pointing towards the Igbo presence in Virginia, one of which is the use of the Eboe drum in music. The Igbo presence in Virginia also brought new practices such as the cultivation of Okra, a plant whose name derives from the Igbo language. Slaves in Virginia relied on sweet potato which is argued by Douglas Chambers to be an indication of a substitute for yam, the Igbo staple crop.
Kentucky

The state of Kentucky, which was carved out of the Colony of Virginia had received many of Virginia's slave drivers and slaves as people started migrating westward. These migrations spread out the population of African slaves in America, including Igbo slaves. Here the Igbo population had already become heavily creoleized alongside other African ethnicities that were taken in significant numbers to America.
Culture

African cultures were heavily suppressed in the American slave era. The plantation and slave owners made sure to suppress African cultures through intimidation and torture, stripping away slaves' names and heritage. As expected, Igbo culture faced the same oppression, however some cultural remnants of Igbo origin was found and can still be found in the United States. Most of these cultural remnants can be found in music and entertainment. Igbo culture manifested in America through the Jonkonnu festivals that once took residence in the black slave population in Virginia. This masquerade bears similarity with the masking traditions of the Okonko secret society who still operate in the Igbo hinterland. The maskers wear horns which further shows similarity to Igbo culture and the Ikenga deity. Heavily African influenced American music genres such as Jazz and Ragtime stem from a mix of African cultures that creolized in the Americas. Although these genres could be described as a mix, there are elements of American music that have specific origin and Igbo instruments, such as the 'Eboe Drum'. The Igbo opi flute is similar to the drum and fife traditions.

The novel Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe follows the story of Okonkwo, an Igbo leader and warrior. The novel alludes to many of the customs and historical happenings of post-colonial Igbo culture. The book has been critically acclaimed, often being referenced as the archetypal African novel written for the Western world.
Religion

The vast majority of Igbo Americans identify as Christian, with a significant amount of adherents to Roman Catholicism. Protestantism; including Anglicanism, Seventh day Adventist, Baptist, Methodist and non-denomiational churches; make up the other denominations of Igbo Christians.

Igbo people, African Americans

Igbo Americans, or Americans of Igbo ancestry, (Igbo: Ṇ́dị́ Ígbò n'Emerịkà) are residents of the United States who identify as having Igbo ancestry from modern day Nigeria. There are primarily two classes of people with Igbo ancestry in the United States, those whose ancestors were taken from Igboland as a result of the transatlantic slave trade before the 20th century and those who immigrated from the 20th century onwards partly as a result of the Nigerian Civil War in the late 1960s and economic instability in Nigeria. Igbo people prior to the American Civil War were brought to the United States by force from their hinterland homes on the Bight of Biafra and shipped by Europeans to North America between the 17th and 19th centuries.

Identified Igbo slaves were often described by the ethnonyms Ibo and Ebo(e), a colonial American rendering of Igbo. Some Igbo slaves were also referred to as 'bites', denoting their Bight of Biafra origin, and other names were used in reference to their home lands in Africa. Their presence in the United States was met with mixed feelings by American plantation owners because of their 'rebellious' attitudes to enslavement. Many of the enslaved Igbo people in the United States were concentrated in Virginia's lower Tidewater region and at some points in the 18th century they constituted over 30% of the enslaved black population. Igbo culture contributed to the creolised African American culture and is perhaps evident in such cultural vestiges as the Jonkonnu parades of North Carolina. Igbo Americans introduced the Igbo word okra into the English language.

The recent migrant population from Nigeria settled in many of the United States' larger cities and urban centres and had come largely in search of economic opportunities in the late 20th century. Because of the realities of slavery and its erasure of African heritage and customs, most people who identify as Igbo in the United States and speak the Igbo language at home are from these families that arrived in the 20th century and forth. Since the turn of the 21st century genealogy tracing by means of DNA testing is in part revealing the Igbo ancestry of African Americans, some notable celebrities including Blair Underwood and Quincy Jones.

FOREST WHITAKER FINDS HIS ROOTS IN IMO STATE NIGERIA.

April 6 was a really beautiful day. The people of Nkwerre village in Imo State, Eastern Nigeria might have thought they were just luckky to have a day as nice as this but the reason that day was all shiny and new was because a lost son had returned.

Forest Steven Whitaker,an Academy Award-, Golden Globe-, and Emmy-winning actor, producer, and director returned home to Nigeria.

I was the only journalist that got luckky to be right there as he was welcomed with fellow star, Danny Glover. Right there before my eyes, they were given prestigious chieftancy titles reserved for nobel and well respected men.

Whitaker, sorry chief Whitaker was given the title-"Nwannedinambe Of Nkwerre" meaning "A Brother in Foreign Land" while Chief Glover received the title- "Enyioma of Nkwerre," this means "A Good Friend."

It took me a while to believe I was actually there with world stars in a small village in Nigeria. I have not fully recovered.

I was really proud to be who I am when Chief Whitaker thanked the King for allowing him to breathe the air and feel the wind in a different way. To feel his blood differently. I was moved to tears and filled with mixed emotions when he said "Now I know where I stand, it is the greatest gift anyone can receive."

Chief GLover was also honoured and said this was home for him. We all moved on to the Ayiam-Osigwe family house to celebrate. I took in slowly, the priviledge of seeing them dance to the beats of Africa and savouring every mouth full of Jollof-rice, semovita and egusi soup, our native dish.

For me, a 24 year old Newswatch magazine senior staff writer in Lagos, I would never forget this day. Since I got back to my desk, I have recounted the stories to my colleagues over and over, now I want to tell the world.

I beleive his visit, his new identity, his title, his words and who he is would inspire Nigerians especially those on the road to shunning corruption and believing in hardwork.

Lachi is a vocalist, songwriter, composer, multi-instrumentalist and author based in New York City. Having released numerous albums and singles, Lachi's music is often described as Pop, Dance, or Singer Songwriter.

Early life

Daughter of Author and Professor Dr. Marcellina Offoha and the sixth of seven children, Lachi began writing songs and short stories at a very early age, and performed in musical ensembles throughout her school years. Lachi has a congenital visual impairment, Coloboma of the retina causing legal blindness. Lachi overcame her severe low vision through music, writing and performing.

Lachi attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she created the all female a cappella group The UNC Cadence. She then moved to New York City to embark upon her music and writing career while working towards a master's degree in Music at New York University. Apart from obtaining side music gigs, Lachi worked at the New York District's United States Army Corps of Engineers.
Career

Lachi's music can best be described as Pop, soul and electronic dance music with empowering messages.

She completed her first project album, "And This Is My Life," full of solo piano pieces released June 6, 2006. The album is an intimate array of jazz, blues and mellow piano songs heavily influenced by life experiences throughout her college years. On January 24, 2009, she released her piano-driven alternative rock EP "Ugly Beautiful," full of messages of inner growth. This EP demonstrates Lachi's strong songwriting prowess, and though rock, still harbors much of her jazz influence through colorful chord progressions and random spouts of scatting.

She then got picked up by Fanatic Records/EMI-Caroline Distribution, who spotted her at a South by Southwest showcase and signed her for one album. On July 27, 2010, her self-titled piano-driven alternative rock album "Lachi" was released, which though edgier and more confident, held her message of inner growth and strength. The album garnered her a good deal of press and attention, landing her on Oprah Radio and winning her national TV and radio spins. During this time, Lachi performed at PrideFest (Milwaukee) (where she opened for Patti LaBelle).

Lachi then teamed up with Ray Archie to put out “It’s Our Time,” a song she wrote to aid in the launch of social music collaboration platform, Mixluv. This was a collaboration with Gary Pine, Shea Rose, and Kiyano Kim. She also flew out to L.A. to record tracks with Trend Def Productions while putting the finishing touches on her first full-length novel, “The Ivory Staff.”

In June 2015 Lachi released The Boss EP through Trend Def’s Sony Music Entertainment imprint. Again an album of empowerment, the EP is a high-energy foray into commercial Pop/Dance touched with Dubstep. The single "Boss" found a prominent feature on Oxygen Networks's Bad Girls Club.

In October 2015 Lachi released her Fiction narrative, The Ivory Staff, under the name M. Lachi through the independent publisher, Library Tales Publishing.

Lachi spent most of 2016 songwriting and composing for independent production companies and artists. In August 2016, Lachi teamed up with Israeli World Music producer Zafrir Ifrach and Moroccan vocalist Maxime Karouchi to create the Mediterranean-infused EDM track Dalale.

Nneka Egbuna (born 24 December 1980) is a Nigerian hip hop/soul/reggae singer, songwriter and actress. She sings in Igbo, English and Nigerian Pidgin.

Music career

Since 2003, Nneka has been working closely with the hip hop beatmaker DJ Farhot, a producer living in Hamburg. As a young singer she first gained public attention in 2004 while performing as an opening act for dancehall reggae star Sean Paul at Hamburg Stadtpark. After much acclaim, Nneka was given a green light to record her first album.

After releasing her debut EP The Uncomfortable Truth with the music label Yo Mama's Recording Company, she performed on her first tour with Patrice Bart-Williams in April 2005, playing shows in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

She finished recording her first album in the autumn of 2005. Entitled Victim of Truth, it was released not only in Germany but also in England, France, Netherlands, Nigeria and Japan. Garnering rave reviews from the media, the UK's Sunday Times later declared it “the year’s most criminally overlooked album”, comparing it favourably to 'The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill'.[1]

Following the release of the album, Nneka enjoyed a sustained and successful period of touring, performing at festivals such as Chiemsee Reggae Summer, Haarlem (Bevrijdingspop), Den Haag (Park Pop) and Saint-Brieuc (Art Rock Festival) as well as in respected venues like La Maroquinerie and New Morning in Paris, Tivoli in Utrecht, Paradiso in Amsterdam and Cargo and ULU in London. She has also supported artists such as Femi Kuti, Bilal, Seeed, and Gnarls Barkley.

In 2006, Nneka also performed with a group of dancers from Münster on the German TV channel WDR. there she performed her single "Gypsy" while the group performed their dance routine they had worked on specifically for the song gypsy. The dance group was supported by the organization Schlauberger.

In February 2008, she released her second album, No Longer at Ease. The title of the album is taken from a novel of the same name by Chinua Achebe and reflects the lyrical content of the record. Most of the songs are political, talking about the plight of the Niger Delta and the corruption in Nneka’s homeland. “No Longer at Ease” combines the political and the personal in “a winning mix of soul, hip-hop and reggae”.[2] The lead single from it, "Heartbeat", became her first song to break into the German Top 50.[3] In September 2009, the song entered the UK Singles Chart at number twenty.[4]

The following months saw tours in France, Italy and Portugal, while she also supported Lenny Kravitz on his French tour in April 2009.

Nneka was nominated in three categories for the 2009 Channel O Music Video Awards,[5] and won an award for Best African Act at the 2009 MOBO Awards.

In late 2009, she was chosen as of one Beyond Race Magazine's "50 Emerging Artists", resulting in a spot in the publication's #11 issue (with Bodega Girls and J. Cole on the cover), as well as an exclusive Q&A for the magazine's site.[6]

In November 2009, Nneka staged her first concert tour of the United States where she performed shows in New York City, Vienna (Washington DC), Boston, Philadelphia, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Furthermore, she was a special guest on The Roots Jam session. Her first US release Concrete Jungle was set for 2 February 2010.

Her track "Kangpe" is also featured as a soundtrack on the EA Sports FIFA 2010 video game.

In January 2010, Nneka appeared in Late Show with David Letterman in New York before getting her US tour underway.

In June 2010, she won the reggae category of the Museke Online Africa Music Award 2010 with her hit song, "Africans".

She agreed to go on tour with Nas and Damian Marley to help them promote their Distant Relatives (2010) album. She has done a remix of her highly rated track, "Heartbeat" with Nas, which was released via iTunes on Oct 05 2010.[7]

She participated in the 2010 Lilith Fair Concert where Tegan & Sara, Sarah McLachlan, Kelly Clarkson, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Corinne Bailey Rae, Mary J. Blige, Rihanna and others have performed. She performed also in Washington, Raleigh and Charlotte (United States).

Nneka recorded a song for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa called "Viva Africa". It is a tribute to the premier mundial on African soil.

Nneka also won the award for best indigenous artist in Nigeria at the Nigerian Entertainment Awards (NEA) 2010, which was held in New York, U.S.A. Since then she has won the NEA award for best international artist several times
