Politics › 2019 Presidency: Atiku, Tambuwal Split PDP Governors, Stakeholders by BeeBeeOoh(op): 7:36am On Aug 24, 2018 |
There are indications that the recent defection of some members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) might have created a nightmare for the major opposition party in the country. Already, governors elected on the platform of PDP and other stakeholders are divided over the party’s presidential ticket for next year’s election.
They are torn between handing over the ticket to defectors or members who had stayed in the party since 2015 when PDP became an opposition party. So far, about 11 aspirants are in contention for the PDP ticket, which has been zoned to the North. Among those who have publicly declared their intention to run for the presidency are former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar; former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido; former Minister of Special Duties, Kabiru Turaki; immediate past Chairman of PDP National Caretaker Committee, Senator Ahmed Makarfi and Senator Datti Baba Ahmed, proprietor of Baze University. Gombe State Governor, Ibrahim Dankwambo, as well as former Kano and Sokoto state governors, Ibrahim Shekarau and Attahiru Bafarawa, respectively, are the other aspirants. President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki; Sokoto State Governor, Rt. Hon. Aminu Tambuwal and former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, who rejoined the party some weeks ago, are also interested in the PDP presidential ticket.
They have not declared publicly, even though their aspiration is almost an open secret. Findings by New Telegraph indicated that there is a ‘cold war’ in the party over the presidential ticket. A source at the national headquarters of the party in Abuja said: “There is ‘cold war’ now in the party since Tambuwal and Saraki came back. You know, they are interested in the presidency. “With that, the front runners would be Atiku and Tambuwal. As a matter of fact, the battle is a straight one between Atiku and Tambuwal. The governors and other party stakeholders are divided.
“The interesting thing this time is that the governors are not united unlike before. (Nyesom) Wike is mobilising for Tambuwal, but (Seriake) Dickson and Abia State Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, are supporting Atiku. “So, it may be difficult to predict who will likely pick the ticket.” He said, however, that those who had remained in the party like Makarfi, Lamido and others, are not happy that defectors are being given attention ahead of them. Atiku, Tambuwal, Saraki and Kwankwaso are the returnees seeking PDP’s presidential ticket. According to another source, those who had remained in PDP thought that the presidential ticket would be a compensation for any one of them for remaining loyal to the party while others were on political green pasture elsewhere. He said Tambuwal was persuaded to leave APC to join the presidential race by forces who are not too comfortable with the Atiku presidency.
Before Saraki and Tambuwal re-joined their former party, the ticket was for Atiku to lose. His rating was too high for any of them to meet. He had toured round the country more than twice, in consultation with wouldbe delegates, while some of them are yet to even begin. None of the aspirants could match his connection or what is known in political parlance as ‘war chest.’ But, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has consistently kicked against Atiku’s candidacy. It was gathered that the condition he gave PDP leaders who visited him recently in Abeokuta, Ogun State, was for them to look for another presidential candidate if they wanted his support in next year’s election. Obasanjo recently told an online portal, Premium Times, that God would not forgive him, if he supported Atiku’s ambition.
“The problem is how to handle Atiku, because he can match the governors money-for-money and he has contact across the country. He has been going round the country and has won many delegates to his side. “So, before Tambuwal joined PDP, none of the aspirants could match him. So, I believe that is why some party leaders reached out to him to come and contest,” the source added. Obasanjo was said to be comfortable with either Kwankwaso or Dankwambo’s candidature, but the problem is that they lacked national appeal. Kwankwaso is said not to be popular in the South because of his antecedents. “In fact, some see him as a zealot who hates southerners.
“Dankwambo is relatively known. Apart from his position as Accountant General of the Federation, which is more of a civil service job, he has not occupied any national political office. “But Tambuwal was Speaker of the House of Representatives for four years and that has made him a national figure,” he said.
The source disclosed that Saraki is still interested in returning to the Senate next year.Asked how he intends to achieve this since every other primary would come before that of presidential primary election, the source disclosed: “He will put a weak person who will step down for him if he fails. Even Kwankwaso is thinking of that. Remember, he did the same thing in APC, with (Rochas) Okorocha.” Kwankwaso and Imo State Governor, Okorocha, were among the APC presidential aspirants in 2014 presidential primary election, but later went back to pick the senatorial and governorship tickets in their states after they lost to Buhari. Certain factors are likely to influence the choice of PDP presidential candidate. One of them is the age factor while the other is geopolitical zone of the candidate.
Though sources said these have been played down, there are indications that PDP would prefer a younger candidate, who the party believes would appeal more to Nigerians. Again, the party may go for a candidate from North- West (where Buhari comes from) so as to be able to divide APC votes in the zone. All these factors favour Tambuwal. It was gathered that the Caliphate has been lobbying for Tambuwal and would like to use him to pay Buhari back in his own coin for his ill-treatment of former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd), who is a prince of the Caliphate.
has been disquiet in the Presidency when the rumour of Tambuwal’s defection became stronger. His emergence as PDP presidential candidate would likely deny Buhari votes in Sokoto and Zamfara states. But it is not going to be easy for the Sokoto governor. Apart from his Bayelsa and Abia State counterparts, who are not supporting his ambition, delegates from Gombe and Kwara may also not vote for him at the convention. Dankwambo is in the race, so also is Saraki, who is from Kwara State. Atiku’s camp also said it is not losing sleep over Tambuwal’s ambition. His media team had quickly released result of online poll, before he announced his defection to PDP, where pollsters rated the former vice president over Saraki, Kwankwaso and “others” for PDP ticket. Spokesperson for Atiku Campaign Organisation, Segun Showunmi, said in an interview, that Atiku was not threatened by the entrance of Tambuwal into the race. “We are not threatened by anybody. We have penetrated every village and every town and hamlet in Nigeria,” Showunmi said.
He added that what Atiku campaign demands from PDP is free and transparent primary election. According to him, “Once the process is going to be credible, then, all candidates that have shown interest are encouraged to criss-cross the country, go and meet the delegates, market themselves to the citizens and may the best man win.” Atiku and Tambuwal met recently in Abuja. The details of the meeting were not made known, but sources said it is in connection with PDP presidential ticket and Tambuwal’s declaration. PDP has, however, assured the aspirants of level playing ground for all aspirants. Kola Ologbondiyan, the National Publicity Secretary, said PDP has taken note of all concerns raised by party members, including new and returnees and assured them that no one would be short-changed. “While PDP appreciates and values such concerns, it is instructive to inform that the national leadership of our party has already envisaged the challenges of an enlarged family and has since made adequate arrangements that would effectively cover all interests for the task ahead,” the party said. https://newtelegraphonline.com/2018/08/2019-presidency-atiku-tambuwal-split-pdp-govs-stakeholders/Lalasticlala, Mynd44

Politics › President Buhari Carpets His Critics, APC Chieftains Who Joined PDP by BeeBeeOoh(op): 5:26pm On Aug 23, 2018*. Modified: 9:43pm On Aug 23, 2018 |
President Muhammadu Buhari Thursday in Daura said the combined efforts of defectors and their supporters in the opposition will not distract his administration from the good work it is doing for the benefit and development of Nigeria.
Many top members of his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), have defected to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in recent weeks.
But Buhari insisted that APC has the full understanding of Nigeria’s challenges and is encouraged by the support of Nigerians in addressing them.
The President spoke at a lunch with some APC Governors accompanied by some members of the National and State Assemblies and commissioners.
“We are always encouraged when all our constituents are happy with the work we are doing and our genuine efforts to make sure that what we campaigned for in 2015 is still very much in our minds and we have not lost focus.
“In terms of security, economy and the fight against corruption, we have maintained focus. Even the opposition with all their resources cannot fault our identification of Nigeria’s priorities and the efforts being made to better them.
“We will continue to do what we ought to do in the leadership position God has placed us and we thank the constituents for the support,” he said.
On the defections within the major political parties, the President reiterated his earlier message to them: ‘‘for those who have decided to change camp for whatever reason, we wish them good luck.’’
In his remarks, the leader of the delegation and Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State commended the President for his great efforts in keeping the nation together through visionary leadership.
He noted that President Buhari had remained focused and unshaken by situations and circumstances, adding that, ‘‘it shows that your administration is approved by God.’’
Okorocha told the President, ‘‘We are here to encourage you to keep doing what you are doing as Nigerians are very pleased with you.
‘‘We also want to inform you that we had wonderful and peaceful Sallah celebration across the country because of security of lives and property you have guaranteed in our nation.’’
Governor Okorocha was accompanied by the Governors of Katsina, Kebbi, Kano and Niger States. http://dailypost.ng/2018/08/23/buhari-carpets-critics-apc-chieftains-joined-pdp/Lalasticlala, Mynd44

Politics › With $94bn Oil Earnings In Three Years, PDP Can't Beat Us - VP Osinbajo Boasts by BeeBeeOoh(op): 9:02am On Aug 23, 2018*. Modified: 3:50pm On Aug 23, 2018 |
Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, yesterday pegged the total earning which accrued to the Nigerian government from oil sales in the past three years at $94 billion.
He, however, stated that in the four years preceding the All Progressive Congress, APC, administration, the government – then led by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) – earned about $393 billion in oil sales but made less impact on the livelihood of ordinary Nigerians.
Osinbajo made this revelation during a town hall meeting in Bariga/Somolu LCDA in Lagos State, on Tuesday, as part of festivities marking the Eid-el-Kabir with Lagosians.
He said: “In the past four years of the previous administration, over $393 billion was earned in oil proceeds alone. In the past three years, we have earned $94 billion. Look at the difference.
“And the reasons are very straightforward. The price of oil was about half of what it used to be. But with the same $94 billion, we have been able to do far more.”
The vice president, who addressed a gathering comprising APC chieftains in the state, youth groups, state government officials and the LCDA Chairmen of Somolu and Bariga, noted that the administration’s National Social Investment Programmes (N-SIP) were geared towards improving the welfare of ordinary Nigerians.
“The president’s focus has always been on the common man. So, when we came, we decided on a few things to tackle youth unemployment. First, the N-Power programme to engage as many young people who are graduates as possible.
“We started with 200,000, and just this month, we have employed another 300,000. So, in our N-Power programme, we have 500,000 young graduates who are employed in the programme. Now every local government (area) in Nigeria has N-Power graduate,” he said.
“When we got into office, 24 states had not paid salaries for over six months and we ensured that these salaries were paid.
“And President Buhari said then, ‘Look, I have been a salary earner all my life, I have never done any business; the only thing I have ever done is government work, either as a soldier or in government. I cannot imagine how anybody can go to sleep as a governor without paying the salaries of his workers.’ So, we made sure that we paid salaries, and we have done so many other things.
“In investments, look at the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway; for almost 12 years, with all that money, it was never done. Now we have set about and we are doing it, we will complete it. Also, the Lagos-Kano railway project, so many of us know that we are moving towards Ibadan now. And we are going to complete it,” he added. http://dailypost.ng/2018/08/23/94bn-oil-earnings-three-years-pdp-cant-beat-us-osinbajo-boasts/Lalasticlala, Mynd44

Politics › Ekweremadu Canvasses Six-Year Single Term For President, Governors Again by BeeBeeOoh(op): 5:05am On Aug 23, 2018 |
• Says it will substantially reduce the political tensions and executive excesses that come with self-successionThe Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has frowned at the heat in the Nigerian political landscape ahead of the 2019 general election and reiterated his call for a six-year single term for the president and governors.
Ekweremadu on his Facebook page @iamekweremadu titled: ‘Still on single term for President and Governors’, yesterday declared that “Nigeria’s political atmosphere is getting toxic ahead of the 2019 general election and governance is taking a backseat.
“Unfortunately, this atmosphere with the accompanying brazen political excesses, are unlikely to abate until well after the 2019 elections.”
He accused the executive arm of government of heating up the polity as evidenced in their desperation to return to office.
“Unable to resist the temptations that come with enormous power of incumbency, those who call the shots today throw everything within their reach into the mix in desperate efforts to retain power at all cost and by all means.” Ekweremadu said the current political climate informed his position to support one- term of six years for both president and governors.
He added that “I strongly believe a single term of five or six years for president and governors, even if for a stipulated period as was the case with several Latin American democracies, is something Nigerians should revisit after the 2019 general election.”
According to him, this will substantially reduce the political tensions and executive excesses that come with self-succession, adding however that “although a renewable four-year term is popular, societies are dynamic and could make necessary constitutional adjustments to safeguard democracy and make periods leading up to elections less toxic.”
Going down memory lane, the deputy Senate president supported his view with what was obtainable in the United States and other political climes.
“For over 150 years, starting from George Washington up to Harry Truman, there was no term limit for presidents of the United States of America. In fact, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) served four terms (although he died just 11 weeks into his fourth term). It was the 22nd Amendment, which was ratified on February 27, 1951, that gave birth to two-term limit for US presidents.
“Moreover, in the 1970s, many Latin American democracies faced the same challenges we face in Nigeria today. As many of them transited from military and autocratic regimes to democratic regimes, and they discovered that the politics of succession, including incumbents; penchant for self-perpetuation, overheated their polities and threatened their democracies.
They adopted the single term presidency until such a time their respective democracies matured and stabilised. Although virtually all of them have reverted to two-term presidency, Mexico still practices single term presidency, called Sexino. She also retained the Sexino in the 2014 constitution amendment,” he explained.
“In Nigeria’s case, we proposed a single term for the president and governors with several transitional options during the constitution amendment exercise in the 7th National Assembly.
“Unfortunately, it was misunderstood by various political and sectional interests for various reasons and the proposal did not succeed.” https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2018/08/23/again-ekweremadu-canvasses-six-year-single-term-for-president-govs/amp/

Politics › Crack In Pro-Buhari Group As Reps Move To Oust Gbajabiamila - Daily Trust by BeeBeeOoh(op): 9:35pm On Aug 22, 2018 |
what happened to Lawal Daura will surely happen to Gbajabiamila."A crack appears to be rocking the pro-Buhari Parliamentary Support Group (PSG), a pressure group of All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmakers in the House of Representatives, as members move to oust Femi Gbajabiamila (APC, Lagos) as House Leader, an insider source told Daily Trust on Wednesday.
According to the source, the crack emanated from divided opinions among the PSG members over the possibility of impeaching Speaker Yakubu Dogara in the aftermath of the gale of defections that hit the ruling party in both chambers of the National Assembly.
It was gathered that some members of the PSG, made up of APC lawmakers, declared war on Gbajabiamila and Sarki Adar (APC, Sokoto), whom they accused of using the group to champion their own selfish ambitions.
Trouble was said to have started over Gbajabiamila's selective treatment of PSG members perceived to be Dogara's loyalists, a move also said to have seriously irked a ranking APC lawmaker from one of the states in the North West.
The source said, "We are already collating signatures for Gbajabiamila's removal as Majority Leader of the House. "He (Gbajabiamila) has been calling nocturnal meetings and even select which APC members that will attend.
"For instance, the last meeting held at Sheraton with the APC National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiohmole, was poorly attended because many APC members were not invited by the House Leader.
"These include ranking members and chairmen of strategic committees which he perceived as Dogara's loyalists. Even the Deputy Speaker, Yusuf Lasun (APC, Osun) was not invited.
"But when we got wind of the meeting, we quickly mobilised and got the Deputy Speaker to be there. Immediately Gbajabiamila saw Lasun, he was devastated and his plans failed."
"Let me tell you, what happened to Lawal Daura will surely happen to Gbajabiamila."
The source further disclosed that Gbajabiamila's loyalty to Speaker Dogara has always been questionable, including telling lies against Dogara during the APC NEC meeting in November 2017 before President Mohammadu Buhari, for which he was rebuked by Alhassan Doguwa (APC, Kano).
To calm frayed nerves, the PSG leadership under Abdulmumin Jibrin (APC, Kano), was said to have sent a text message to its members with a threat to oust Gbajabiamila as House Leader if he continues to use the group for his selfish ambitions.
The letter read, "Honourable colleagues, I urge you to remain calm in the face of attempt to undermine our efforts by Femi Gbajabiamila and Sarki Adar.
"We remain resolute in our support for PMB and unity of the House of Representatives. In the next few days, we will decide if Femi will continue to be the House leader as there are many competent members from South West that can perform better."
“We will not allow anybody to take advantage of our caucus and his so-called support for our party and PMB to foster his personal ambition. Gbajabiamila's style has inflicted collateral damage to the unity of our caucus. It is time to deal with it." https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/crack-in-pro-buhari-group-as-reps-move-against-gbajabiamila-267054.html

Politics › PDP Will Win Next Year Presidential Election - Saraki Boasts by BeeBeeOoh(op): 8:24pm On Aug 22, 2018 |
Senate President Bukola Saraki on Wednesday boasted that the opposition Peoples Democratic Party will win the 2019 presidential elections.
Saraki said this in Ilorin at a meeting with PDP members who came from the 16 local government areas of the state.
He also expressed his confidence that his new party would emerge victorious in all the local government areas of Kwara State.
Saraki said that the victory of PDP at both federal and state levels would be beneficial to all the members in the state.
The Senate President said that the future of PDP was now brighter than it used to be.
“If we emerge victorious at the federal level, all of us will be the beneficiaries. In the state, with your support we will win the state for PDP.
“All of you here are the key players in Kwara politics. With unity of purpose, no party can contest with you.
“We are here to unite all of us under the party we belong to today. I am assuring all members that there will be equity, internal democracy and justice.
“It is not going to be winners take all. As far as I am concerned, everybody here today belong to our political structure.
“There is nothing like old or new Peoples Democratic Party. We have all become one PDP.
“I want all of us to be united for the progress and development of Kwara State.
“As par the politics of the state, nobody can wrest the power from us I if we are united. By the grace of God we will emerge victorious both at the federal and state levels.
“We will ensure that we work as one party because we have always worked together before.
“We will see that all the wards and local governments’ popular candidates emerge based on their popularity and acceptability,” Saraki said.
He assured PDP members that there would be no anointed candidates in all the elective positions.
“I don’t have any anointed candidate at all levels. I don’t have candidates for the state Assembly, National Assembly. It is the person you want in your constituency that I will okay.
“Don’t allow anybody to deceive you that I have endorsed any candidate,” he said.
The Senate President implored party leaders and elders not to drop his name to impose unpopular candidates.
“All of us will collectively choose who becomes the next governor. We will ensure that there is no faction, but one PDP.
“We will ensure that meetings in the local government areas take place in one venue. And we will all work together for the interest of the party,” he said.
Saraki appealed to all party members to start work for the party to emerge victorious next year.
“I am sure many more will come back and join us because those that left under the wrong assumption that it will be different from what it used to be.
“They were misled that those coming are out to move them away. Nobody is moving you away because this place belongs to you too.
“Let us go back and start work closely together and by the grace of God we will all be victorious,” the Senate President said. https://punchng.com/pdp-will-win-presidential-election-next-year-boasts-saraki/
