Crime › Senator Links Killings To Libya, Says Boko Haram And Libyans Involved by BeeBeeOoh(op): 8:01am On Jan 12, 2018
Chairman, Senate Committee on Police Affairs, Senator Abu Ibrahim, yesterday urged the Federal Government to investigate if fleeing remnants of Boko Haram insurgents and displaced soldiers from Libya were involved in the Benue State killings.

Ibrahim who represents Katsina South Senatorial District told reporters in Abuja that probing the possibility of Boko Haram and Libyan elements involvement in the gruesome killings in Benue State may give a lead to what happened.

He said the investigation becomes imperative because a “normal Fulani herdsman is not known to carry AK47 riffle.”

Ibrahim said: “We have to seriously investigate this. A normal Fulani man is not known to carry AK47. The security agencies should probe whether the defeated Boko Haram insurgents were involved; whether the Gaddafi phenomenon has spilled over to Nigeria. It should be considered whether displaced Libyan soldiers had a hand in what happened because it is not easy to acquire AK47.”

To douse rising tension, the lawmaker said he had discussed the unfortunate development in Benue State with the Senators representing Benue North West, George Akume and Barnabas Gemade, representing Benue North East.

He insisted that “in the meantime, we have to control the killings, if we allow it to continue other external variables may creep in to complicate issues.”

On the relocation of Inspector General of Police Ibrahim Idris, to Benue State and the deployment of soldiers to the state, he noted that no stone would be left unturned to address the Benue crisis.

For him, “The police officers are doing their utmost best and with the deployment of soldiers and heavy police presence, they should be able to be on top of the situation to ensure that normalcy returns to the state.”

Ibrahim said President Muhammadu Buhari had taken full control of the situation and constantly briefed about developments in the area.

The President, he said, had formulated a coordinated template to solve the problem involving the police, army, Ministry of Agriculture and the state government.

Ibrahim who is seen as President Buhari’s right hand man dismissed the insinuation that the president is not interested in what is happening in Benue State because the herders are Fulani like him.

He said, “It is not true because the president has taken steps to bring the situation under control. He has deployed soldiers in Benue State, he ordered the Inspector General of Police to relocate to Benue. He as taken other measures that may not be for public consumption.

“It is wrong for any bod to say that the President is not interested in what happened in the state. When the President saw that the police effort was not bringing expected result, he promptly deployed soldiers.”

Politics › Miyetti Allah Accuses Nigerians Of Politicizing Herdsmen And Farmer's Conflict by BeeBeeOoh(op): 8:03pm On Jan 11, 2018
The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders’ Association, an umbrella body of herdsmen, has accused Nigerians of politicizing conflicts between herdsmen and farmers in most communities.

A leader of the group in the South East, Alhaji Gidado Saddikie on Thursday said the issue of herdsmen/farmers’ feud should be addressed with all sincerity devoid of sentiment, politics or religion.

Saddikie, who was probably reacting to allegation by the Chairman of the Northern Elders’ Forum, Paul Unongo, that a former vice president, Atiku Abubakar was the chief financier and most influential member of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, said the matter was taking a political dimension.

He said politicising the issue was no way to find a solution to the problem, but would rather stir bad blood among those involved.

Saddikie identified wrong government approach and lack of sensitisation as some of the major causes of herdsmen/ farmers’ conflict in most communities.

He said, “People play politics with this issue. Former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar is a Fulani, but he is not a member of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association. He has not attended our meeting before; so how can he be a financier of the association?

“Let me tell you, it’s wrong government approach and negligence that are causing these conflicts. How can somebody say Atiku is our financier?

“Most state governments think that herdsmen and farmers are commoners that should not be heard. You must hear them because they are human beings who are contributing to the economic growth of our country, at their own level”.

He said a synergy existed between herdsmen and farmers in the south east because governors in the zone have been proactive.

“We have this understanding and synergy in the south East on how to handle this issue because the governors here and other leaders are proactive.

“We have agreed that any herdsman that destroys the crops of farmers should pay for such damage, and if any farmer kills any herdsman’s cow, he pays for such cow. We understand ourselves here in the southeast, but some other places, it’s not so.

“We have told our people that they should not consider their cows more than any human life. If they kill your cow, report to us. We’ll know how to handle it amicably. Don’t take the laws into your hands.”

Politics › Benue Killings: No Decision Yet On Troops Deployment - FG by BeeBeeOoh(op): 4:55am On Jan 11, 2018
The Federal Government says there is no decision yet on troops' deployment to Benue State to stop the killings there.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, said this on Wednesday while addressing State House reporters after the Federal Executive Council meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari.

He was responding to a question on why the government had not sent military troops to Benue State as done in some other troubled states.

The minister said such a decision would be taken after thorough deliberations on the matter.

He said the Federal Government was very concerned about the incident and was giving it utmost attention.

Mohammed stated: "As to who to send, that will be decided after thorough deliberations on the matter.
"On the second leg of your question is that government is very much concerned about the herdsmen and farmers clashes and it is receiving attention at the highest level."

Asked to explain what the establishment of cattle colonies proposed by the Federal Government as a way of ending herdsmen and farmers in states, the minister simply responded thus: "First of all, what’s the difference between a colony and a cattle ranch. I’m not an agricultural expert, but a colony is much bigger in nature than a ranche."

Also speaking, the Minister of State for Aviation, Hadi Sirika expressed belief that the government would not take any decision without recourse to farm land owners and the laws if the land.

"I’m not speaking as an agricultural expert, but perhaps, growing up in the hinterlands where I grew up, there used to be cattle routes, we call them “burtali” in local language, this was established by the federal government in 1914. It is a designated route where they follow, feed, graze, drink water. When that one was available, there was no farmer/herdsmen clash because the routes were specific, identified and mapped and were paid for compensation over times. But I think due to the development and increase in population, these routes were either captured or converted to farms.

"The question of colony or grazing land or whatever name they are called is about the same thing really. I don’t think government will do anything without recourse to owners of farm lands and laws of the land," Sirika said.

Politics › IGP Kicks Against Military Option In Benue, Says His Men Are On Ground by BeeBeeOoh(op): 8:47pm On Jan 10, 2018
Ibrahim Idris, inspector-general of police (IGP), has kicked against the deployment of military in Benue, saying the force had deployed 660 personnel from some units to complement the security architecture in the state.

Some residents had called on President Muhammadu Buhari to use military option in solving the herdsmen crisis in the state.

Samuel Ortom, the governor, had said he was open to the idea.

But speaking in Makurdi, Benue capital on Wednesday, Idris said the military can only intervene when the police are overwhelmed.

He added that the force was determined to create a safe and secure environment for the people of the state and Nigeria as a whole.

He also apologised to the people of Benue state over his statement that herdsmen attacks in the state were communal clashes.

Over 80 persons are believed to have died in various attacks orchestrated by herdsmen in the state.

While reacting to the killings, said that contrary to reports, Idris had said they were as a result of communal clashes not herdsmen attacks.

But addressing Benue citizens not long after his arrival in the state, the IGP said anyone involved in the killings would be brought to book.

He said the meeting was geared toward finding the lasting solution to the crisis rocking various communities in the state.

“I want to assure you that the police will not rest on its oars until these hoodlums are apprehended and brought to justice,” he said.

“We are conducting an investigation into the killings and will take appropriate action against perpetrators of the heinous crime.

“I want to assure you that police have put in place security measures to checkmate activities of miscreants.”

Idris also promised to take appropriate action against anyone carrying arms around.
