Politics › Yoruba Race Under Siege By Tanko Yakasai & Hausa-Fulani Hegemonic Oppressors- SR by BeeBeeOoh(op):
Nigeria came into being as a result of the British amalgamation of Northern and Southern colonial territories in 1914. The amalgamation was an act of colonial convenience for obvious reasons. The Brits wanted one country stretching from the desert to the Atlantic Coast. Northern Nigeria couldn't pay its way while southern Nigeria generated more than enough revenue for its administrative expenses.

The amalgamation laid the historical bitterness, rivalry, and enmity between the two regions. The two regions are quite the opposite of one another. The North is largely Muslim. It was the center of the erstwhile Islamic Empire called the Sokoto Caliphate. The Muslim North look up to the Middle East and other parts of the Muslim world for affinity, solidarity and sociopolitical model. The South is largely Christian and highly influenced by the sociopolitical pattern of the West and traditional African societies. This was the beginning of a precarious foundation of our federalism.

The foundations of a true federalism are based on the concerns for the unity and integrity of a culturally diverse nation like ours. Our historical experience is a sharp contrast to the important foundations of federalism. Ours is a disruptive and disintegrative sectarian forces coupled with political rancor and instability prevailing since independence.

The lopsided power sharing arrangement between the federal government and the states fuels precipitation and intensification of ethnic conflicts. The politics of ethnicity has remarkably retarded our national development and has remained the sole engine that drives our modern history. The unjust monopoly of power and resources by the central government has galvanized the federating states to advocate for restructuring of the federal system. The Northerners have never favored restructuring because the status quo guarantees them a perpetual hold on power and resources at the center.

r.

The latest northern antagonist of restructuring is Tanko Yakassai. In a recent interview with the Vanguard in Kano, Yakasai said the restructuring of Nigeria is a Yoruba agenda. He said the current agitation to restructure Nigeria was an age old ploy by the Yoruba speaking group of the south west to enable her to have a shot at power. He said the desire was driven by envy and hatred for the northern geopolitical zone. “From Action group to UPN, to NADECO to PRONACO,” says Yakasai, “the agitation for restructuring is concentrated among the south west people of southern Nigeria.”

“The whole aggression originated from Action group, and the intention was to deny the North the benefit of the population and land mass,” continues Yakasai. “It is therefore a gang up to deprive the north the benefits it's getting for being richly endowed.” “This agitation is not driven by patriotism, rather it's driven by hate and envy and this campaign started with some politicians in the south west way back in 1959,” says Yakasai.

Why are Yakasai and his northern emirates afraid of restructuring? Who is jealous of who and for what? Who wants the mass arid desert? Who is envious of the northern backwardness? Which benefits of richly endowed north is Yakasai talking about? Show us or name the riches. How come the “richly endowed” north still remains the least developed and civilized part of the country? To be sure, Yakasai must be indulged in a prolonged trance of day dreaming.

Of the 56 years of independence, the northerners have been in political and economic control of the central government for 38 years. They have always found it compelling to capture the central government. Indeed, they believe in the self-fulfilling prophecy that they were born to rule Nigeria forever. The arrogation and arrogance to be in perpetual control of the central government has further marginalized other federating units in the union.

In all the years they have been in power at the center, the northerners have used diverse strategies and tactics to maintain and perpetuate the grip on power at the federal level. For 38 years they have been responsible for the economic neglect and infrastructural decay of Nigeria. Full of monumental incompetence, they are the unrepentant pirates and predators of our economy. Because of their long hold on power at the center, they, more than any other ethnic group in Nigeria, hindered the process of national development and integration. For all these years, the northerners who headed the central government are icons of corruption. National funds allocated for developments never reached the target groups and purpose.

Agreed all the different ethnicities that have served as Nigeria's Heads of State or Presidents have performed woefully abysmal. However, the northerners who have been in charge for most of the years are the most generously deficient in democratic leadership. They lack sacrifice, courage, initiative, imagination, wisdom, and vision. The northerners have exhibited more profoundly than any of the groups because they have no idea of what participate leadership, servant leadership, transformation leadership, super-leadership, and value leadership mean.

The statement from Yakasai is not surprising. That the Hausa-Fulani feudalists have consciously sought to monopolize power at the center is not a matter of speculation but of public record. They have consistently opposed progressive ideas that would chip away their hold on the center. The northerners have always fought against everything progressive and prosperous for a true federalism. At the National Conference, they opposed devolution of power (restructure), resource control, derivation principle, revenue sharing formula, state police, and the development and exploitation of mineral resources nationwide. In fact, they want the current 13 per cent derivation to be further reduced.

Yakasai no doubt, spoke the minds of Hausa-Fulani hegemonic oppressors by openly confessing their loathsomeness of the Yoruba race for nothing other than wanting a better Nigeria where peace, progress, and happiness reign. As a matter of fact, we can take his word as coming from President Muhammadu Buhari because Buhari does not favor restructuring. I campaigned and canvassed for Buhari. At that time I believed he was the best choice and the best candidate over the corrupt Jonathan. I believed Buhari was best positioned to reshape Nigeria. But, with the Hausa-Fulani agenda espoused by Yakasai and surreptitiously pursued by Buhari, and Buhari's averse to restructuring, I consider Yakasai's declaration as a declaration of war against the Yoruba race.

To Yoruba bastards, prodigals, crumb eaters, back stabbers, traitors, alatenujes, and akindanidanis that are the willing allies and ready tools in the hands of Hausa-Fulani hegemonic oppressors, get your acts together. Stop selling your birthrights for a bowl of amala. Stop playing a second fiddle to Hausa-Fulanis. Stop selling your own people to the feudalists. Now is the time for all Yorubas regardless of party persuasion and religious affiliation to come together and fight the Hausa-Fulani hegemonic oppressors. Our demand is simple: restructure now or we'll opt out of Nigeria!

No more political alliance with the northerners. This is it. For 2019, the battle lines are drawn. We'll not be used – never again – by the Hausa-Fulanis. Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola was used by the northerners to set the West on fire and consequently got rid of Chief Obafemi Awolowo by making sure he was sent to prison. Yorubas, consider this: Why should we continue to elect these political parasites into office whose agenda is not the Nigerian agenda? Why should we abdicate leadership of this nation to the narrow-minded, selfish, power hungry feudal imperialists? What are we going to get by allying with northerners to elect another northerner in 2019 that would be different from their past deformed vision and spineless leadership? The Hausa-Fulanis need us more than we need them.

The die is cast and there is no turning back!

Politics › Buhari Moves Against Ex-Governors, To Recover N57.2bn From Serving Senators by BeeBeeOoh(op): 6:58am On Oct 10, 2016
•Seeks to recover N57.2bn from lawmakers

•Says lack of funds hinder ex-Oil minister, Dieziani’s probe

From Iheanacho Nwosu, Abuja

President Muhammadu Buhari is working to recover N57.2 billion from five serving senators just as the President is facing intense pressure to turn off searchlight on chieftains of his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) facing corruption cases, his biographer, Prof. John Paden has said.

The amount to be recovered from each senator was also listed in the book.

The book, Muhammadu Buhari: The challenges of leadership in Nigeria, written by Paden, equally revealed that the administration’s ongoing investigation of alleged dubious international oil transactions by former minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke and her foreign allies as well as tracking of stolen oil is being hampered by lack of funds.

The book was launched on Monday, October 3 and has drawn varied reactions from Nigerians over some positions and claims.

Detailing various efforts being made by the president in the fight against corruption,Paden said of the nine senators currently facing corruption cases, five are being investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices (and other related) Corruption (ICPC) for alleged misappropriation of N57.2 billion.

The senators, according to Buhari’s biographer are: Ahmed Sani Yerima who ruled Zamfara State between 1999 and 2007 (N1billion); former governor of Plateau state who recently defected to Buhari’s APC from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP); Joshua Dariye (N1.2 billion) and ex-governor of Gombe State and incumbent Senate Committee Chairman on Appropriation, Danjuma Goje (N25 billion).

Others senators are: former governor of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Adamu (N15 billion) and son of former governor of Adamawa State, Murtala Nyako), Senator Abdulaziz Nyako (N15 billion).

Although investigation of the senators was inherited by the administration, the president’s disposition in the war on corruption has placed more heat on the lawmakers, the author contended.

According to the book, president Buhari has been going through enormous pressure to give preferential treatment to APC leaders fingered in corruption cases but stated that such requests have not received his blessing.

Paden said: “Importantly, in none of these cases (apart from certain military procurement scandals that impacted national security) has the prosecution been sponsored or encouraged by president Buhari. He has kept his hands off the judiciary, despite enormous pressure for him to come to the aid of APC allies.”

He further added that, “although a number of senior officials had been tried for corruption prior to the Buhari Presidency, the extent of the current corruption court cases in Nigeria is unprecedented. By February 2016, nine senators (out of 109 in the National Assembly) were facing criminal charges.”

On the reason the administration is yet to make desired impact in recovering petro-monies involving Mrs. Madueke and her foreign allies, the book claimed that investigation into the deals were being hampered by lack of funds.

“A major challenge for the Buhari government was how to track stolen oil…At the heart of the oil bunkering scandals was the former minister of Petroleum Resources and her associates,” the book alleged .

It stated that “a general lack of funds appeared to hamper the Nigerian component of the investigation… In February, a letter by the Presidential Advisory Committee on Corruption(PACC) to a United Kingdom -based anti corruption organisation, Global Witness, soliciting assistance in raising funds, revealed that due to the fall in crude oil prices and the general economic downturn, government lacked the needed funds to pursue the recovery of loot.”

Crime › How Aiye Cult Leader Hacked To Death In Power Tussle In Ogun by BeeBeeOoh(op): 6:10am On Oct 10, 2016
Operatives of the Zonal Intervention Squad of the Zone 2 Command, Onikan, Lagos, have arrested two suspected members of Aiye confraternity, in connection with a crisis that tore the group apart three months ago in Ogun State, during which its leader was hacked to death.

The suspects, according to police, were also involved in the fight between Eiye rival cult group in Otta and Ifo areas of Ogun State, during which over 20 lives were lost. The suspects, Sheriff Afeeri and Owoseni Wasiu, according to the Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, were arrested a fortnight ago, at Agosi area of Ifo, Ogun State, while planning attacks. Recovered from the suspects was an axe bearing the logo of Aiye confraternity, among other items.

Speaking with Vanguard, one of the suspects Owoseni Wasiu, popularly known as Olore, said that their leader, whose identity he gave simply as Niyi, was hacked to death following moves by some members to forcefully oust him from of office.

Late Niyi, it was gathered, was processing his admission into Lagos State Polytechnic. Wasiu, who admitted to have been among those that fought the same day, said he was not responsible for Niyi’s death. He explained that there was an earlier fight between factions of the group, during which late Niyi’s faction, described as the elders’ group, was overpowered.

Irked by the affront, late Niyi and his loyalists were said to have stormed Western City Street in Ifo, Ogun State, where Wasiu’s group, which was described as youth group, was having a meeting. The youth group, said to have got wind of the coming attack, ambushed members of the elders’ group, forcing them to take to their heels.

Explaining how Niyi was killed, 26-year-old Wasiu said: “I did not kill Niyi, Akube and Heritage did. They hacked him to death with an axe. It was Niyi’s group that came to attack us.” On his part, Sheriff Afeeri also claimed he had no hand in Niyi’s death. He said he was on hospital bed when the incident occurred.

The Ordinary National Diploma holder in Insurance from the Polytechnic of Ibadan, said: “Late Niyi was our leader. New members, referred to as youths, alleged that he was lavishing the confraternity’s money and told him to leave for another person to take over, but he refused. “This led to the clash between the elders and the youth group.”

Politics › Re: Rivers Commissioner Of Police Francis Odesanya To Be Sanctioned For Aiding Wike by BeeBeeOoh(op):
Falana demands immediate release, prosecution

Human righana (SAN), on Sunday, urged the DSS to release the detained judges.

He, however, described the call by the leadership of the NBA for the unconditional release of the judges as an embarrassment to the “incorruptible members of the bar”.

But Falana said because the detained judges “are presumed innocent until the contrary is proved by the state, they should be admitted to bail in self recognisance.”

He urged the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, to ensure that the judges were immediately arraigned without delay.

“However, it is a matter of grave concern that the legal profession has allowed the denigration of the hallowed temple of justice because of the misconduct of a few corrupt judges.

“For several years, judges, who committed grave criminal offences, were not prosecuted but merely retired by the authorities on the recommendation of the NJC.

“Although the National Judicial Council recently recommended the dismissal and prosecution of a judge for extorting the sum of N197m from a litigant, the authorities had paid lip service to the menace of judicial corruption in the country.”

Condemning the NBA’s call for the unconditional release of the judges, Falana said, “In particular, the NBA, which has information on all corrupt judges and lawyers in the country, has continued to shield them to the embarrassment of incorruptible members of the bar and the bench.’’

SERAP threatens to sue Buhari

A rights advocacy group, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, has written Buhari, demanding the immediate and unconditional release of the arrested and detained judges.

The group, which also wrote the United Nations on the case, threatened to take legal action, both locally and internationally, against the President should the judges not be freed immediately.

SERAP said in a statement on Sunday by its Executive Director, Adetokunbo Mumuni, that while it fully supported Buhari’s anti-corruption war, it viewed the clampdown on judges as a chilling “blow to the independence of the judiciary and a dangerous precedent that should not be allowed to stand.”

SERAP added, “We are seriously concerned about the wave of arrests, intimidation and harassment of judges across the country by the DSS. While we fully support the government’s efforts to eradicate judicial corruption, we cannot accept anti-corruption strategies and methods which patently offend the rule of law and undermine the authority, integrity, sanctity and independence of the judiciary.

Mixed reactions trail arrest of judges

Also, mixed reactions have continued to trail the raids on the houses of the detained judges by the operatives of the DSS.

In separate reactions to the invasion on Sunday, elder statesman, Alhaji Tanko Yakassai; a member of the House of Representatives during the Second Republic, Dr. Junaid Mohammed, and an Abuja-based lawyer, Kayode Ajulo, gave their perspectives to the action of the DSS.

Yakassai called on Nigerians to rise up and resist what he called a gradual slide into fascism.

He said, “What is happening now in Nigeria is reminiscent of what took place in Germany after the accession to power of the Nazi party in the 30s. It is a repeat of the same scenario of what happened to Italy, Portugal and Greece under fascist regimes in those countries.

“A close look at the happening in Nigeria nowadays is frightening. It looks as if we are really sliding into fascism. We have to stop it before it becomes a monster that will consume everybody.

“It is an attempt by the government to cajole the judiciary and force it to do its own bidding, particularly if the conduct is viewed against the persistent complaint by the Presidency against the judiciary, which the President once called his main headache in the fight against corruption.”

Mohammed said judges as citizens, could not be above the law.

He explained that the nation’s laws did not explicitly say the DSS should not arrest judges, stating that it was not out of place for judges, who were suspected of committing criminal offences, to be arrested.

He said, “However, I am uncomfortable with the DSS taking over the role of the EFCC when it comes to the anti-corruption fight. This is because the EFCC is, to a large extent, part of the police force. In fact, it is like the Special Branch of the police but the DSS is not.’’

Ajulo said as a legal practitioner, he believed in the rule of law, adding that getting rid of corrupt judges from the system must follow proper procedure.

He explained that no arm of government constantly reviewed itself like the judiciary.

Ajulo stated, “I support that corrupt judges should be investigated and dealt with accordingly but it should be done with decency without bringing the bench to disrepute or ridicule.’’

Former CP, Tsav, others react

But a former Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Alhaji Abubakar Tsav, has advocated what he called “a Jerry Rawlings treatment, which was carried out in Ghana”, to any public official found guilty of corruption in Nigeria.

Tsav, who decried the reports of alleged corruption against some judges, submitted that any judge, who out of greed, succumbed to the violation of oath of his or her office, should face the wrath of law.

Tsav, in a statement in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, on Sunday, said, “The law is no respecter of anybody, hence, Nigeria should mets out the treatment that a former President of Ghana, Jerry Rawling, meted out to corrupt leaders in his country if found guilty of similar offencee in Nigeria.

“Our judiciary is embedded in corruption and thus rotten beyond preservation; it is a shame indeed. With the judiciary and the police corrupt, our country is finished. Where will the ordinary man seek justice?”

The Executive Director, Community Outreach for Development and Welfare Advocacy, Mr. Taiwo Otitolaye, said the action of the DSS amounted to impunity.

Otitolaye, in a telephone interview with one of our correspondents in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, on Sunday, said the action of the DSS was against democratic tenets.

A social critic, Olola Kasum, however, said he was in support of any action taken by Buhari to fight corruption in the country.

He said, “We should support Buhari in everything he is doing to fight corruption. Some of the judges are corrupt. We know them. I support anything that Buhari does to frighten them. When Buhari is doing something to frighten any corrupt person, we should support such a move. You cannot make radical changes in the country by following due process, it will not work.”

Ekiti APC slams NBA, Fayose for condemning raids

Also, the APC in Ekiti State has berated Governor Ayodele Fayose for criticising the DSS for its raids on the houses of some judges.

It said Fayose’s attack on the service followed the same pattern of his criticisms of other anti-graft agencies anytime the governor felt threatened by the activities of these agencies.

The party also criticised the NBA for condemning the DSS, wondering why the umbrella body of lawyers maintained silence when the judiciary faced a more daring and contemptuous challenge in the past, especially, when Fayose allegedly led thugs to attack the court in Ado Ekiti.

In a statement in Ado Ekiti on Sunday, the APC Publicity Secretary in the state, Taiwo Olatunbosun, stated that contrary to Fayose posturing as fighting for the rule of law, the governor was actually fighting for his own survival.

He said, “It is most likely he has something he is hiding that we do not know.

“Fayose’s attempt to set Ekiti people against the DSS through inflammatory statements in a live broadcast on the state media to, again, instigate the people against security agencies, will not save him from facing justice in his numerous brushes against the law.
