Crime › EFCC Arraigns Female Banker For Alleged N462 Million Fraud (Photo) by BeeBeeOoh(op): 9:43pm On Mar 16, 2022
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned a banker Judith Nneka Nwagwu for alleged fraud.

She was docked before Justice D. A. Onyefulu of the Anambra State High Court in Onitsha, Anambra State.

Nwagwu faces a seven-count charge bordering on forgery and obtaining by false pretence to the tune of N452,047,000.

The defendant allegedly obtained N192,000,000 from a complainant whom she was his account officer.

Nwagwu had claimed that the bank had $400,000 for sale at the rate of N480 per dollar.

Her employers petitioned the EFCC alleging that she forged two fixed deposit certificates and fraudulently obtained N260,047,000 from a customer under the guise of fixing the money for him.

In count 6 of the charge, Nwagwu, sometime in 2021 made a “false document titled ‘Malaexchio Global Limited’ with the value of N141,347,289”.

The offence violates Section 436 of the Criminal Code Law, Cap 36, Anambra and punishable under Section 444(3)(h) of the same law.

Nwagwu pleaded not guilty when the charges were read. Prosecution counsel Michal Ani requested a date for the commencement of trial.

Justice Onyefulu granted bail in the sum of N10million with a surety in like sum, who must be resident within the jurisdiction of court.

The judge adjourned the matter until May 11, 26 and June 8, 2022 for trial.

Politics › Adopt Technology To Address Examination Malpractice - Buhari Tells WAEC by BeeBeeOoh(op): 10:10pm On Mar 15, 2022
President Muhammadu Buhari has charged the West African Examination Council (WAEC), to adopt the use of advanced technological innovation to resolve the rising incidence of examination malpractice and to reposition the WAEC curriculum.

Speaking during the formal opening of WAEC’s 70th Annual Council Meeting on Tuesday in Abuja, President Buhari while commending WAEC on the implementation of technology for its digital certification, biometric and online registration, however, maintained that examination bodies in Nigeria and the African sub region must move towards the next level of technological advancement to ensure economic growth.

According to him, adopting an online examination system could help to also reduce current overall logistics cost and also help bridge distance barriers, the president pleaded with the council to do more in the aspect of technological advancement.

Represented by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Buhari stressed on the need to encourage teaching of core skills beyond the paper and pen surface, so as to be equipped for the global economy.

He said: “WAEC Curriculum and teaching must be designed to support this cause as this is the Africa we dream of, an Africa that breeds well classified strong people and innovative entrepreneurs.”

Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, who expressed displeasure over what he described as “the endemic phenomenon of examination malpractice,” urged the Council not to relent in its efforts in evolving strategies and initiatives that would eliminate the menace which was affecting credibility of West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

While assuring the Council of the needed support to improve its services and maintain the quality and credibility of its examinations, the Minister commended WAEC for consistently taking advantage of developments in Information and Communication Technology (ICT), especially in easing its examination related operations “such as the electronic registration platform for both the school and private candidates examinations as well as hosting of result.

“I am also aware that your results are being released ahead of schedule and certificates are now printed within 45 days of the release of results. These are, indeed, landmark achievements and giant steps in the right direction.”

Chairman of Council, Prof. Ago Essuman, who worried that public examinations had become a thorn in the flesh of examining bodies in the sub-region, noted that the perpetrators were becoming more daring and innovative.

“Examination agencies are beginning to appreciate how ill-equipped we are to address examination malpractice, reflected in inappropriate behaviour such as cheating, bribery, misuse of results, collusion with other candidates and supervisors, collaboration by parents and teachers, as well as obtaining information from external sources by various means, including by modern technology.”

On his part, the WAEC Registrar, Mr. Pateh Bah, disclosed that the management was “striving within the limits of available resources to step up the acquisition of cutting edge gadgets and software to check examination fraud and bring all the offices to comparable levels in the deployment of technology.”

Politics › Ortom Asks Buhari To Resign, Hand Over Power To Osinbajo by BeeBeeOoh(op): 10:17pm On Mar 14, 2022
Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State, on Monday, called on President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently resign from his office and hand over power to his vice, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.

Ortom, who made the call at a press conference in Makurdi, said the president failed Nigerians in all areas of his electoral promises, especially with the worsening insecurity in the country.

Ortom is one of the prominent critics of the President Buhari-led government, especially on matters of security and the economy of the country.

“The Federal Government has completely failed and I want to call on President Muhammadu Buhari to accept the fact that he has failed this country and I want to advise him to honourably resign as president of Nigeria.

“Yes, he can resign and hand over to his deputy to handle the affairs of this country. Otherwise, this country will be going down,” he said.

The governor lamented the continued killings going on in his home local government of Guma and other parts of the state by suspected herders militia as well as banditry snuffing lives out of citizens in parts of the country.

He said it had become unreasonable to continue to cry for help without any decisive actions taken by the federal government to end the menace of invasions on Benue villages, adding that his people are now ready to take up arms prescribed by the law to defend themselves.

“I was part of those who worked for President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015 based on the promises he gave to us that he would be president for everybody and for nobody.

“But, today we have seen clearly that he is president for Fulani people. So, every day we have seen the level of nepotism going on in this country.

“I know that it’s is happening in other states of the federation but I’m talking about my state where I’m elected as governor to provide good governance and security for lives and property.

“So, I talk about these things. It’s unfortunate and I pray for my colleagues and people of various states that let God help us. And more than praying, we must act because for me as a student of the Bible I know that faith without work is dead. So action must be taken.

“I’m going to take my action, I have consulted with my people and I know what to do which is not for public consumption.

“We are going to take decisive action because enough is enough.

“We have cried enough and no more crying. After those press conferences, I’m not going to tell anybody about how many people have been killed in any of my local governments any longer.

“We will take steps and complement the security agencies but we are not going to compromise our peace and security again. This is enough.

“The 1.5million people I have in the camps were chased away from their homes by those terrorist people.

“The security men have done their best from 2017 to date, more than 100 security personnel have been killed. They are doing their best and I must admit that they are grossly inadequate, he added.

Ortom maintained that the country under Buhari leadership is on the verge of collapsing with its economy nosediving daily while corruption stinks to the high heaven.

He blamed the allies of the president for not telling him the truth about the state of the nation even as he advised the Economic Financial Crime Commission (EFCC)’s head not to allow politicians to use him to settle scores.

“They can insult me, send EFCC to come after me. If they come here, I will take you (EFCC) to court again and by the grace of God defeat you like I defeated you before,” he said.

Politics › Dispatch Rider Found With Baby Had Mother's Consent - Police by BeeBeeOoh(op): 10:44am On Mar 14, 2022
The Lagos State Police Command has said that a baby reportedly found inside the courier box of a dispatch rider at Sangotedo, in the Ajah area of the state was not abducted.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the State, CSP Adekunle Ajisebutu, in a statement on Monday also rebuffed the claim that the child was kept in the courier box.

According to him, the mother of the baby and the rider, identified as William Tadule, are relatives the child is fond of him.

Ajisebutu said, “On March 11, 2022, a video of a dispatch rider accused of concealing a suspected stolen child in a courier box went viral on the social media, causing apprehension.

“Although the incident was not reported at any police station, however, the Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alabi, fdc, mnim, psc, directed that the incident should be investigated immediately.

“In compliance with the directive, investigation was initiated which led to the discovery of the scene. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the child was not stolen afterall and that he was not kept in the courier box as alleged by the mob.

“The child’s mother, Lovina Biturs, was contacted. It was then revealed that the child was actually taken away and put on the dispatch motorbike by the rider with the consent of his mother.”

The PPRO said according to the mother, the 10-month-old baby is fond of the rider who is a relative and neighbour and was crying uncontrollably when Tadule wanted to go pick up something in the neighbourhood.

He added, “To pacify the baby, his mother allowed him go with the rider. Passersby who saw the child with the rider along Sangotedo area, Ajah on the said day, became suspicious and concluded that the child might have been stolen, raised the alarm which attracted a mob. The mob subsequently pounced on the rider, beating him without finding out the truth.

“The dispatch rider later identified as Williams Tadule, was said to have been rescued by the Chairman of the Sunview Estate, Sangotedo. The Commissioner of Police, therefore warns members of the public against any form of jungle justice as such uncivilized action has grave consequences.”

“An 80-year old woman was beaten to stupor and some of her belongings were stolen by the gang.”

Some members of Araromi Orita community, under Ado-Odo in Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State, have sent “Save Our Soul (SOS)” messages to the Governor Dapo Abiodun over the invasion of the village by bandits.

Olusegun Odeyemi, the Baale of the community, told journalists on Sunday that the gang of hoodlums stormed the village at about 2:00 a.m. on Thursday, beat up some of the villagers, including an 80-year-old woman and injured several other villagers.

“Twelve members of our community were taken away by the hoodlums who also burgled six houses within the area.

“An 80-year old woman was beaten to stupor and some of her belongings were stolen by the gang,” Mr Odeyemi said.

Politics › Buhari Celebrates WAEC At 70, Says He Was A Founding Member Of The Board by BeeBeeOoh(op): 8:46pm On Mar 13, 2022
President Muhammadu Buhari has hailed the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) on the occasion of its 70th anniversary.

The 70th annual council meeting will be hosted in Abuja, the Nigerian capital, from March 14 to 18.

In a statement on Sunday by spokesman Femi Adesina, Buhari highlighted he was a founding member of the foremost examining board.

He affirmed that Nigeria values the shared commitment with other members of WAEC and would continue to engage with partners.

Buhari promised to assist the council to achieve its mandate of maintaining quality educational standards to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

WAEC has brought the English-speaking West Africans together to encourage academic and moral excellence through a qualitative educational assessment, he noted.

Ahead of this week’s meeting, the Buhari urged the council to remember the core values of excellence, integrity, professionalism, accountability and transparency.

The President believes that just as member-nations have survived the COVID-19 pandemic and internal conflict, “this cherished education institution would continue to thrive as a world-class examination body”.

Politics › Igboho: Agitation For Yoruba Nation Resumes Next Week - Prof. Banji Akintoye by BeeBeeOoh(op): 10:23am On Mar 13, 2022
The apex Yoruba self-determination organisation, Ilana Omo Oodua (IOO), has threatened to resume its agitation for Yoruba nation from next week. The leader of the organization, Prof Banji Akintoye, made this position clear in an interview with Saturday Sun.

When asked on the group’s next line of action following the release of detained Yoruba nation activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, aka Sunday Igboho, from prison in Cotonou, Benin Republic, earlier in the week, Akintoye, who spoke through his Communication Secretary, Maxwell Adeleye, stated that the IOO would come out with a comprehensive statement on its next plan on Sunday (tomorrow).

But he did not mince words when he added that the agitation for self-determination would be pursued with vigorous energy. According to him, “It is a battle to be continued. We are proceeding with our agitation with all legal and intellectual property we have. Just wait till Monday for a new development.”

Asked for his advice for Igboho who has just been released, he responded: “Ighoho is a hero. Our advice is for him never to be

deterred in the struggle for self-determination for Yoruba nation. It is a just cause. A court of competent jurisdiction has said self-determination is legal. So, he should not be deterred in the struggle. Virtually, all patriots and freedom fighters in the world were once persecuted. He should keep hope alive and remain committed to the will of his people.”

On the health status of the activist, Adeleye stated that nobody would be confined, and not have his health status tampered with. He added: “There is nothing like freedom. Freedom is good. It is true Igboho was released on health ground. At present, he has been accessing medicare at a befitting health facility in Cotonou. I believe that he will be hale and hearty.”

Loan sharks whose offices were raided include Kashkash, Speedy Choice and Easy Moni, GoCash, Okash, EasyCredit.

Several federal government enforcement and regulatory agencies on Saturday raided the offices of loan sharks over their continued rights abuses of Nigerians.

The agencies comprised of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, National Information Technology Development Agency, and Independent Corrupt Practice and other Related Offences Commission.

Loan sharks whose offices the Inter-Agency Joint Regulatory and Enforcement Taskforce raided include Kashkash, Speedy Choice and Easy Moni, GoCash, Okash, EasyCredit.

Reports detailed that most of the loan shark companies operated on the third floor of a four-storey building in Ikeja.

Work items belonging to the loan firms were carted away by the FCCPC and other agencies involved in the raid to support their investigation.

Speaking during the raid Executive Vice Chairman of the joint operation and Chief Executive Officer of FCCPC, Babatunde Irukera, said the decision to embark on the raid was triggered by the incessant complains from Nigerians relating to privacy infringement and malpractices by the loan sharks.

Mr Irukera said the joint task force was granted permission by the court to carry out the raid.

The FCCPC boss disclosed that most of the loan companies which are without addresses were being operated by the same person at the same location.

He also noted that most of the loan sharks operated illegally as they were not registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission.

“We found out that most of these companies operate from the same place. We also found out that many of them are actually operated by the same person.

“They are not Nigerian companies, they don’t have addresses in Nigeria and they are not registered in Nigeria with the Corporate Affairs Commission, and they do not have any license to do their businesses,” he said.

Many Nigerians have in the past months turned to online lenders as the country’s economy continues go worsen.

However, illegal loan apps have continued to ignore Nigeria’s cyber laws.

In their efforts to recover loans from Nigerians, they employ methods such as shaming and threatening customers who are behind in their payments.

Recall that NITDA had in 2021 slammed a N10 million fine on Soko Lending Company for threatening borrowers and invading their privacy.
