Chairman of Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) and Governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi, has said community policing is the way to go.

However, he collaboration with the mainstream security agencies is needed to achieve results as obtainable in western nations.

He stated this, yesterday, during a panel discussion on security situation across states organised by the NGF in partnership with the Center for Democracy and Development (CDD).

He said a vigilance group like Amotekun was achieving results with local intelligence in his state, Ekiti.

“We believe until and unless we begin to look at multi level policing, that is what is happening in every nation around the world, we will not meet the demands of our people for local security and global protection.”

Fayemi, who disagreed with the argument of a participant that state police would be prone to abuse, said abuses meted on some Nigerians by some security personnel was proof that both federal or state police could be prone to abuses. He said as a sitting governor he was abused by the police during the 2014 election despite his immunity.

He said rather than condemn community policing, an institutional framework should be put in place to guard against abuse. “I’m not going to sit here and make an excuse that such powers in the hands of some local actors may not be abused. Anybody could abuse. It could happen, even if you devolve security to the local level. However, what we need to be talking about is what institutional frameworks should we put in place to ensure that such powers are not abused, not to use it as an excuse not to do the right thing. Because at the end of the day, there are mechanisms in our constitution to protect citizens’ rights.”

He also said the police gets more funding from states than from the Federal Government. He stated this while responding to what state governors do with their monthly security votes, saying aside the police, other security agencies also get support from governors.

“I also get feedback from other states in my capacity as chairman of the governors’ forum. There is hardly any of these institutions that you are talking about that we don’t fund. We fund the police — we fund the police more than the federal government. Quote me. State governors fund police more than the federal government. We buy them vehicles; we pay them allowances,” he said.

There are indications that some senators and members of the House of Representatives may dump the All Progressives Congress (APC) should President Muhammadu Buhari insist on having Senator Abdullahi Adamu as the National Chairman. A member of the House of Representatives, who disclosed this to our correspondent yesterday under condition of anonymity, said National Assembly members were in touch with some governors and may leave the party, if a level-playing field is not provided for all aspirants to the position of National Chairman.

This is even as Senator Adamu is billed to meet with members of the APC caucus in the House next Tuesday. Recall that about seven governors are reported to be plotting to leave the APC over theremovalof theChairman of the Caretaker Committee, Yobe State Governor, Mallam Mai Mala Buni as well as President Buhari’s alleged insistence on Senator Adamu as National Chairman. He said: “I want to inform you today that at least seven governors will be leaving the APC and they may lead the mass exodus of APC members, including senators and honourable members.

We are in touch with the governors and we are serious about this threat.” The lawmaker added: “We cannot afford to leave the party in the hands of someone who was never part of the merger that birthed the APC. We do not want someone that can be a mole. We want a foundation member of the party to lead us.

“Therefore, we are calling on President Buhari and other stakeholders in the party to create a level-playing field for all aspirants to the position of national chairman and other posts. Let the delegates decide who should lead our great party. “Nobody is against the President and his preferred aspirant, Senator Abdullahi Adamu.

But we are saying even if there is going to be consensus; all stakeholders must be given a sense of belonging. We must all agree. But we reject the imposition of a National Chairman or any other person.” The lawmaker who is from a North Eastern state averred that it is the position of the Northern political stakeholders in APC that, President Muhammadu Buhari – being a major ben-eficiary of the formation of the APC and having enjoyed an eight year presidency spanning two tenures of four years each – should ensure that there is a level-playing ground for all the aspirants to the position of the National Chairmanship position of the party, without any measure of imposition.

Following his suspension by the National Union of Road Transport Workers as the Chairman of Lagos State chapter of the union, Musiliu Akinsanya, aka MC Oluomo, has asked Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to take over the running of all parks and garages in the state.

Akinsanya stated this during a press conference at the NURTW Secretariat in the Agege area of the state on Thursday.

He also announced the withdrawal of himself and his lieutenants from NURTW as a union.

The PUNCH had reported that the national headquarters of the union queried Akinsanya for refusing to carry out instructions given to him in recent times by the national leadership.

Among other allegations in the query dated February 14, 2022, Akinsanya was also accused of resorting to intimidation, harassment, and assault on the newly-appointed Chairman, Tricycle Owners and Operators Association of Nigeria, Azeez Abiola, aka Istijabah.

In his response, Akinsanya, who said he had successfully complied with his oath of office, refuted the claim that he instigated members of the union to assault Abiola.

He, however, noted that the legality of the TOOAN operations in the state is a subject of a suit pending before the National Industrial Court.

Akinsanya also refuted claims of engaging in acts of insubordination and anti-union activities in the state.

Subsequently, in a letter dated March 9, 2022 and signed by NURTW General Secretary, Kabiru Yau, the national body of the union said Akinsanya has been suspended indefinitely for gross misconduct amongst other offences and directed Akinsanya to hand over to his deputy.

Addressing pressmen at the conference on Thursday, Akinsanya said, “I, Comrade Musiliu Ayinde Akinsanya, on behalf of the State Administrative Council, State Executive Council members and the entire union rank and file members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Lagos State Council with over 200 branches and zones hereby resolve to immediately withdraw our membership and operation from the National body of NURTW for peace to reign in Lagos State; write to Lagos State Governor, Lagos State Ministry of Transportation and other relevant agencies about our decision.

“It is important to state that our action is in line with section 40 of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended, which provides as follows – Every person shall be entitled to assembly freely and associate with other persons, and in particular, he may form or belong to any political party, trade union or any association for the protection of his or her interests. This means that every person shall be entitled to join an association and exit freely without molestation.

“In view of this and the crisis at hand, Lagos State Government is hereby invited to consider its white paper on Transport Union activities, 2004 section 5C, which states that the Government should take over the management of any garage or motor park where there is a crisis until such is resolved by the consultative committee.

“We hereby call on Lagos State Government to take over the running of the affairs of the Union with the Constitution of a Park Management Committee for Motor Garages and parks in the state, thereby ensuring peace and tranquility, pending the determination of the matter in the interest of the good people of Lagos State.”

The Chief Executive Officer of Air Peace, Allen Onyema, has disclosed that the Nigerian airlines risk going under in the next three days if the price of aviation fuel, also known as Jet A1 is not controlled.

Mr. Onyema, while appearing before the House of Representatives Committee investigating the increase in price of the fuel, said the operators now buy the fuel for N670 per litre from the N190 per litre they used to buy.

He noted that despite the increment in air tickets by the airlines, they are still running at huge losses and owing debt.

Onyema said the NNPC limited should be asked to bring down the price of the fuel to N200 per litre so that the operators can continue to operate.

Responding to the request, NNPC Limited CEO, Mele Kyari said the request will not be possible. Kyari stressed that the fuel is a deregulated product and the landing cost is N418 per litre.

“The Chairman of Air Peace said they should bring it to N200 per litre.

“As of today, the landing cost of ATK is N418 per litre, we have no control over that, the only way is to subsidize it,” Kyari said.

Other operators who spoke at the hearing also echoed what Onyema said.

The CEO of Overland, Captain Edward Boyo, said the country risks putting planes at risk if action is not taken to regulate the price of Jet A1 fuel.

In his ruling, the Deputy Speaker, Idris Wase said the Committee will meet again on Monday to hear from the fuel marketers.

He directed the NNPC limited boss to work with all relevant authorities to crash the price of jet fuel.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has zoned its chairmanship position to the North-Central geopolitical zone, ahead of its national convention slated for March 26.

This was contained in a document signed by Salisu Na’inna Dambatta, the party’s Director of Publicity and dated March 9.

“During its regular meeting on March 8, the Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has approved the recommendations of the committee on zoning,” partly reads the statement.

The new zoning formula suggests positions formerly occupied by the South would go to the North and vice versa.

Among top contenders for the position of national chairman are Saliu Mustapha from Kwara, Sani Mohammed from Niger and former Nasarawa governors Tanko Almakura and Abdullahi Adamu. Mr Adamu is believed to have the backing of President Muhammadu Buhari to emerge, albeit with some murmurings among certain governors who are opposed to him.

The North-Central which comprises Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger and Plateau states would produce the party’s National Chairman, while the National Vice Chairman, National Secretary, National Youth Leader and National Physically Challenged Leader were zoned to the South-West (Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, and Oyo States.)

National Publicity Secretary and National Women Leader would emerge from the South-South region which comprises Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo and Rivers States.

The South-East would produce the National Treasurer and National Welfare Secretary. The region comprises Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo States.

National Financial Secretary, National Legal Adviser and National Organising Secretary were zoned to the North-West, (Jigawa, Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto and Zamfara states).

The North-East region would produce the National Auditor and Deputy National Financial Secretary.

This region comprises Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba and Yobe states.

The Independent National Electoral Commission has said it would take action against ousted-Ebonyi state governor David Umahi when it receives documents from the ruling court.

On Tuesday, Mr Umahi was removed as state governor by the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The court said Mr Umahi had forfeited his governorship when he defected from the PDP to join the ruling All Progressives Congress last year.

“The Commission has not been served with a copy of the said judgement. The Commission will meet and take a decision when it is served with a Certified True Copy of the judgement,” Mr Okoye said to Peoples Gazette when reached for clarification.

Justice Inyang Ekwo ordered the electoral body to stop recognising Mr Umahi and his deputy and that the Peoples Democratic Party send names to INEC to replace the governor and deputy.

The new development comes hours after the opposition PDP urged INEC to issue certificates of return to Iduma Igariwey and Fred Udogwu as the new governor and deputy for Ebonyi.

The party said the electoral office should confirm to serve as deputy governor forthwith, according to a short statement released by its media department on Tuesday afternoon.

The Gazette reported earlier that Mr Umahi has not revealed any plans to appeal the judgement, only vowing to defy the ruling and remain in office until next year when his tenure elapses.

The Northern caucus of the Tinubu presidential support group, Asiwaju Project Beyond 2023, has said that the Kano State governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, spoke for the whole and the entire northern parts of Nigeria when he said that the North was fully supporting the All Progressives Congress (APC) national leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in the latter’s bid to become Nigeria’s President come 2023.

Recall that the President of Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF), Yerima Shettima, had berated the Kano State governor for supporting Tinubu’s presidential ambition, saying Ganduje was not speaking for the North.

But in a press statement signed by the trio of Hon. Buhari Hussaini, North-East Mobilisation Director of the Project; Hon. Adamu Birniwa, North-West Mobilisation Director, and Hajiya Halima Mohammed, North-Central Mobilisation Director of the Project Beyond 2023, they chided the AYCF President for attacking Governor Ganduje, saying Shettima lacked the “locus standi” to speak for the North.

According to the group, “We the Mobilisation Directors of Asiwaju Project Beyond 2023 on behalf of the entire good people of Northern Nigeria are saying categorically that we are fully behind the presidential ambition of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to become Nigeria’s President after President Muhammadu Buhari come 2023.

“We are not ungrateful elements and we can never be, we are aware of Tinubu’s support for Buhari’s presidential elections, after a series of trials he won in 2015 with sole support of Almighty Allah through Bola Tinubu and it is time to pay him back by supporting his ambition too.”

They further said that Tinubu stands for true leadership, growth, progress development, justice, equity and egalitarianism.

“He is detribalised, since his days as governor and up till today, there are many northern people and other tribes in the Lagos State Executive Council courtesy his detribalised posture.

“Bola Tinubu has visited many Boko Haram-ravaged states in the North in person and he has donated handsomely for the rebuilding of shattered lives unlike any other person in Nigeria of today.

“Bola Tinubu has contributed tremendously to the democratic developments of Nigeria, he has built a lot of Nigerians to the level of political leaders and business moguls in Nigeria, he is a philanthropist of no class and he has supported so many lives beyond religion, ethnic and political colouration. What other characteristics are we looking for again in a worthy leader?

“Many leaders apart from Kano Governor like our fathers; Mallam Tanko Yakassai, Emir of Borgu, Emir of Kano, Emir of Katsina, Etsu Nupe and a whole lots of them have patriotically seen beyond now and throw their weight behind Bola Tinubu. So which North is Yerima speaking for? We are of the opinion that he is talking for himself not even for Arewa youths because he cannot be wiser than our political and traditional leaders mentioned above,” they said.

The group, therefore, called on all Nigerians especially in the North to shun all negative campaigns against Tinubu, saying he is physically fit, mentally alerted and intellectually sound to lead Nigeria to greater heights in socioeconomic and political growth and development spheres.
