Traditional rulers in Ondo State have promised to work towards emergence of a All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, as next President.

The monarchs said Tinubu’s antecedent stood him out as the next person to take Nigeria to the place of her dream.

They spoke separately when Tinubu visited them in the three senatorial districts of the state.


Oba Fredrick Obateru-Akinruntan, the Olugbo of Ugboland, who spoke at Okitipupa, headquarter of Okitipupa local government, said Tinubu has the charisma and ability to turn the country’s fortune around.


He said all traditional rulers in Ondo South had blessed and endorsed him for the number one job.

In Akure, the Ondo State capital, Chairman, Ondo State Council of Obas, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi, Odundun II, said Tinubu would transform the country technologically and in other sectors.

Oba Aladetoyinbo described Tinubu as ‘maker’ of men even those he rarely knew.


He said the prayers of the Obas in Ondo Central senatorial district would ensure Tinubu becomes the next President.

Tinubu informed the monarchs that he was running for the presidency because he is seriously bothered about the development of Nigeria.


Tinubu stated that Nigeria would compete favourably with Russia in the exploration of oil and gas if its natural resources were properly harnessed.

He said he knew the problem of the country and i given the opportunity, Nigeria would be ranked among the best nations in the world.

“I don’t ran away from battle. I am very particular and passionate about democracy. During MKO, we tried but we could not get it. When they came to meet us we seek your supports and Buhari became the President.

“I have gone to inform Buhari that I want to contest, particularly that it is remaining few months for him. It is not a matter of fight, the constitution stipulated it. Buhari told me to go ahead and declare.

“I informed Buhari so that people were not say who did I inform before taking the decision. I am the most qualified to become the president. I will ensure that our children get employed, there will be industries and all round development across the country.

“Ondo State is abundant in natural resources and Akeredolu is really trying. The job of a president is all about brain and I have it. Inform everyone that I want to contest. I will make Nigeria to be more developed than Lagos.

“It is a pity that ordinary brake pad Nigeria cannot produce. I will turn Nigeria around for good.

All I seek are your prayers and support for me to become the president. It is your son that wants to contest and I’m that your son.

“Lagos State was the worst state in Africa when I became governor, we generate megre revenue then but we did our best then but look at Lagos now, it generates over N40 billion in revenue

“Division is one of the problem in Nigeria too but there is no division in Lagos because any tribe or religion is welcomr as they can contest and win elections and that is why Lagos is thriving.

“I am here to seek blessing of our royal father’s for my presidential election ambition because I know where the problems are and if given the opportunity in 2023, Nigeria will be ranked among the best nation in the world.

“I am imploring all eligible voters to get their Permanent Voters Card (PVC) revalidated for them exercise their civic responsibilities,” Tinubu said.

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has launched an enhanced electronic passport facility for the South East.

Interior Minister, Rauf Aregbesola, unveiled the centre on Thursday in Enugu State.

Aregbesola said applicants no longer need the services of third parties to obtain passports.

“It is so easy to apply online. Applicants will only be required to go to the selected Passport Office on the appointment date for enrolment”, he said.

The minister noted that this would eliminate passport racketeering, touting and clumsy processes.

He urged applicants to visit the NIS Passport portal via passport.immigration.gov.ng to apply, complete the form, pay online and get an appointment.

Aregbesola advised them to have their National Identity Number (NIN) and be ready to supply verifiable documents for easy processing of their applications.

Acting Comptroller General of Immigration, Isah Jere Idris said the enhanced ePassport was the latest technology.

Jere explained that it comes in three categories: 32-page, five-year validity; 64-page, five-year validity; 64-page, ten-year validity.

The data page is polycarbonate, water-resistant and has additional 25 security features more than the ordinary e-Passport.

“With the commissioning of the Production Centre in Enugu, all the five Passport Offices in the South-East have been migrated to the enhanced Passport platform”, he said.

The CGI told holders of the ordinary e-Passport not to worry as the two documents are valid and run concurrently.

Enugu Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi represented by Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Simeon Otuanya thanked the NIS for its contributions to the nation’s security.

In December 2021, the enhanced e-Passport facility for the South-West was launched in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The SDP governorship candidate, who said fuel scarcity is not new in Nigeria, urged Nigerians to pray to God to give President Buhari the required will to solve the problem once and for all by putting a permanent stop to the payment of fuel subsidy.

Engr Oni described the ongoing fuel scarcity as "a mere storm in a teacup", added that he was sure that President Buhari will resolve it as soon as possible.

The Director-General of the World Trade Organisation, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala says the Russia-Ukraine war is threatening global stability.

In a statement on Wednesday, Okonjo-Iweala said the organization is saddened by the war, which they hoped would have been averted.

With the battle raging on and talks between Ukraine and Russia yet to yield results, the WTO is concerned about the implications.

“We are also concerned about the trade implications of the conflict, especially trade in agriculture and food products and the rise in energy prices and their effects on the impacted population,” Dr Okonjo-Iweala said.

Dr Okonjo-Iweala warned that the war in Ukraine, a major wheat exporter, would hurt consumers around the world.

Speaking at a virtual event with IMF Chief, Kristalina Georgieva, Okonjo-Iweala said the war will have a “big impact on Wheat prices and prices of bread for ordinary people as well.”

She added that the WTO is praying for “a peaceful and quick resolution” to the crisis as soon as possible.

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved N3.5 billion for the evacuation of Nigerians stranded in war-torn Ukraine, says Zubairu Dada, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs.

Mr Dada disclosed that the sum was approved at the monthly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting which was presided over by the Vice President on Wednesday.

Already, the federal government has contracted Air Peace and Max airlines to carry out the evacuation using three aircrafts.

The evacuation is expected to take place in Romania, Hungary and Poland where many Nigerians fled for safety, in the wake of the violent attacks by Russian forces currently occupying Ukraine.

The ministry of foreign affairs earlier this week explained that citizens who sought refuge at the Nigerian embassies in the aforementioned countries would be provided accommodation as efforts were being made to return them home.

“Also, officials at Budapest, Hungary have received and accommodated 74 Nigerians safely, where they are being documented for subsequent travel arrangements back to Nigeria,” partly reads the statement issued by the ministry.

It added, “For now, movement to the Hungarian Zahony border and Romanian Suceava, Tulcea, Satu Mare County, and Maramures borders is advised, as they approved visa-free access to all Nigerians coming from Ukraine and arrangement for accommodation and feeding before evacuation is arranged.”

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Usman Baba, on Tuesday warned police officers in the Federal Capital (FCT) to not use crime prevention measures such as roadblocks and raids for extortion.

Baba, who spoke in Abuja at FCT Command during a one-day duty tour, specifically handed this warning to the Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), Area Commanders and Police Tactical Teams, saying their functions as security agents should not create difficult situations for road users and other law-abiding citizens.

He said, “We must ensure that they serve the purpose for which they are deployed. Don’t raid because you want to detain people and begin to ask for bail. Don’t be on the road doing stop and search because you want to create a difficult situation for road users so that you can extort.

“Whatever crime prevention measure you want to adopt, you must use it effectively and with the fear of God. The job of policing belongs to everybody and we must all come together to cooperate and synergise if we must police our communities effectively.

“Police, as a lead agency in internal security, must exploit this area of collaboration with the people. The space is wide, there is no need for rivalry or to outsmart others because every security agency, including the police, are working to checkmate the activities of criminals.”

The Commissioner of Police in charge of the FCT, Sunday Babaji, said the command had developed and implemented operational policies and strategies aimed at combating crimes and criminality, noting that the operational policies and strategies were in compliance with the vision and mission of the IGP.

He, however, noted that inadequate manpower, inadequate barrack accommodation for officers and men, inadequate patrol vehicles, trackers, drones, Tear Gas Smoke, arms and ammunition were major challenges confronting the command.

According to him, the command needs 10 Armoured Personnel Carrier, 15 Toyota Hilux, 40 motorcycles, Bulletproof jackets/ballistic helmets and 1,500 Walkie-Talkies to function effectively.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, on Tuesday, in Abuja has said that the Federal Government is poised to enhance the remuneration package of university lecturers.

This is as he affirmed that the government is open to juxtaposing lecturers’ earnings in Nigeria with what is obtainable outside and making compensatory increments, if necessary.

Ngige spoke to State House Correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, after briefing the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on the status of FG’s current engagement with the Academic Staff Union of University over ingoing the one-month warning strike.

The Minister noted that the President after consultation with some stakeholders including the National Inter-Religious Council had directed him, the ministers of education and Communication and Digital Economy to quickly resolve the strike.

He said the federal government has already met with ASUU, with another meeting planned for Tuesday.

He also noted that the issues of earned allowances and revitalisation have not been ironed out “otherwise, we have put timelines on most of the other things.”

The minister said: “Yes, our university lecturers here deserve good pay. A worker is due his wages. So, if we compare with what obtains in other climes and they are not adequately remunerated, there is nothing that stops the government within the lean resources we have to do some compensation raise and make them happy.

“So, we are not opposed to that but there is a process like I explained to them.”

Ngige noted that a timeline had been given for the draft proposal the union submitted at the ministry of education for their conditions of service and wages to be concluded.

He said when the relevant committee headed by the chair of pro-chancellors submits its report, it will be considered together with the National Salaries and Wages Commission to ensure that the proposed allowances do not exceed government’s extant fixtures.

According to him, Buhari was satisfied with his brief and the “2020 December agreement with ASUU is on course in terms of implementation.”

The minister also revealed that N40bn for earned allowances has been paid just as N30bn for revitalisation as well as the sum of N22.7bn paid from supplementary budget and also earned allowances for 2021.

On the much-debated use of the Integrated Payroll and Personal Information System or the University Transparency Accountability Solutions, Ngige said the committee concerned has only four weeks to provide feedback.

“Again, we gave the committee four weeks to report back to us. So, you can see we are making progress,” he said.

He explained that the National Information Technology Development Agency ran user acceptance tests, integrity and vulnerability tests on UTAS and decided that it did not meet the requirements after spotting weaknesses in the system, but ASUU has rejected it as incorrect.

He said a joint technical team will re-run the tests to confirm the initial findings and necessary solutions.
