Politics › APC Convention: South-West Governors, Tinubu Battle Buhari's Candidate by BeeBeeOoh(op): 8:51pm On Mar 20, 2022 |
SOUTH-WEST governors in the All Progressives Congress (APC) and a former Lagos State governor, Senator Bola Tinubu are in a last-meeting rapprochement ahead of the national convention of the party fixed for Saturday, Sunday Tribune can authoritatively reveal.
The move, according to party sources, is to downplay the intrigues and power play among them which could deny them the prized slot of national secretary zoned to the zone. Investigation revealed that among the APC governors in the region, only two enjoy a warm relationship with the former Lagos State governor and presidential aspirant.
Sources told Sunday Tribune that the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) and by extension the Presidency is smarting to ensure that an anointed candidate of the power bloc emerges as the candidate for the office. The sources mentioned the Executive Director, Niger Delta Power Holding, Ife Oyedele, as the choice of the defunct CPC.
Other contenders for the office are Senator Iyiola Omisore, former Minister of Communications and governorship candidate of the defunct CPC in Oyo State, Bayo Shittu and Professor Abideen Olaitan Olaiya. While Omisore is from Osun State, the duo of Bayo Shittu and Professor Olaiya are from Oyo State.
Oyedele is from Okitipupa in Ondo South Senatorial district and shares the same defunct CPC platform with Shittu.
Sources revealed that between Shittu and Oyedele, the CPC tendency in the APC has since settled for the latter. Oyedele’s supporters see his endorsement as a reward, a pay-back period for his loyalty and support for President Muhammadu Buhari in his uncertain days of relentless pursuit for the presidency.
The aspirant was a member of the Board of Trustees of the CPC and Ondo State Coordinator of the Buhari Campaign Organisation when he emerged in 2014 as APC presidential candidate.
The former Ondo State governorship aspirant was the Head of Media and Publicity Committee of Buhari Campaign Council in the state in the run-up to the 2019 presidential election.
The South-West governors have since been informed of plot to ensure that Oyedele makes the Unity List of consensus candidates to be ratified at Eagle Square, venue of the convention.
S/W governors’ last minute move to stop Oyedele
The South-West governors are in frantic move to stop Oyedele, believed to have since enjoyed the blessings of northern governors for the position of the party’s national secretary.
They have endorsed former chairman of the APC in Ondo State, Isaac Kekemeke for the office of national vice chairman, South-West and have agreed to defer to Tinubu’s favoured candidate, Senator Omisore as consensus candidate for national secretary in order to stop the former CPC stalwart from clinching the strategic position. APC chieftains in the South-West are apprehensive of a situation in which President Buhari will produce both the national chairman and national secretary of the party ahead the presidential convention.
Investigation revealed that another strategic position, the national organising secretary, has been zoned to the North-West, the zone of President Buhari. Meanwhile, former Zamfara State governor, Abdulazeez Yari, at the weekend, insisted that he would run for the office of national chairman of the party.
Checks revealed that by virtue of the zoning arrangement produced by the zoning committee led by the Kwara State governor, Abdulrahman AbdulRazak, Yari is precluded from the contest since he is from the North-West.
The exalted office has been zoned to the NorthCentral states of Kwara, Kogi, Benue, Plateau, Nasarawa and Niger states. Speaking with newsmen, Director General of Yari Campaign Organisation, Tijani Kaura, claimed the position was zoned to the North and not any particular zone in the region.
He said: “Let me say again that we are all aware that the party has zoned national chairmanship to the North and presidency to the South. But we are not aware that there is specific zoning within the geopolitical zones of either the president or the national chairman of the party.
“Nobody indicated whether it is South-West, SouthEast or South-South. The party acting chairman has not come out officially to tell us the chairmanship has been zoned to a particular geopolitical zone. So, that is why we are here.” https://tribuneonlineng.com/apc-convention-south-west-governors-tinubu-battle-buharis-candidate/

Politics › 2023: Saraki, Tambuwal, Mohammed Meet To Pick Northern Consensus Aspirant by BeeBeeOoh(op): 8:27pm On Mar 20, 2022 |
Former Kwara State Governor, Bukola Saraki, has described the All Progressives Congress as a party that has almost collapsed completely, saying that the Peoples Democratic Party is the only alternative for the country
Saraki, stated this while briefing journalists at the end of a meeting held with the Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed and Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, on Sunday, at the Ramat House, Bauchi.
He said that the over two and a half hours discussions centred around the 2023 general election and the possibility of having a northern consensus aspirant.
The former Senate President who spoke on behalf of the two governors said that the three of them that have shown interest in contesting the Presidency in the 2023 general election under the PDP from the north, have resolved to pick a consensus aspirant among them to run.
He said, “We came here and had a meeting for about two hours now all the three of us that have shown interest in leading this country, our concern for the hardship our people are going through, the high cost of living and also looking ahead towards 2023.
“It is very clear that the PDP is the only viable solution to rescue this country today and to provide new hope. And as such, as key stakeholders of this party, it is important for us to sit down and meet and put heads together and see how best we can provide leadership and direction.
“In so doing, we met and discussed that with 2023 ahead of us and in trying to rescue this country, the unity, stability and growth of the country are more important than individual ambitions. We believe that if the three of us that are working together honestly, committed and with a lot of zeal for this country, there will be a great hope for this country going forward.
“We appreciate that the three of us have shown aspirations to lead this country and what we have come to realize is that we are all competent and capable to lead this country but at the end of the day, it is only one person that will lead this country in 2023. We have also resolved that we will work closely together to ensure that we will come out with a consensus candidate among the three of us.
“We believe our role is to make things easier for us to have stability because if there is stability in PDP, there will be stability in Nigeria. You’ve all seen that APC is no longer a party, it is having challenges of administering its party and anybody that cannot administer a party cannot lead the country.” https://punchng.com/2023-presidency-tambuwal-saraki-mohammed-meet-to-pick-northern-consensus-aspirant/

Politics › We'll Deduct ₦242.53 Billion Fuel Subsidy From FAAC This Month - NNPC by BeeBeeOoh(op): 1:25pm On Mar 20, 2022 |
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited is to deduct N242.53bn as subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit, popularly called petrol, from the Federation Account this month.
Although it described the proposed subsidy deduction as a value shortfall, the oil firm stated that the fund would be recovered from February 2022 proceeds due for sharing in the March 2022 Federation Account Allocation Committee meeting.
The NNPC disclosed this in its latest presentation to the FAAC meeting, which was obtained by our correspondent in Abuja on Friday.
It said, “The December 2021 value shortfall recovery on the importation of PMS amounted to N210.38bn.
“The recovery consists of December 2021 value shortfall of N176.48bn plus the outstanding value shortfall recovery of N33.9bn accrued over the 2021 year. The November 2021 spot arrears of N98.81bn is also outstanding.
“The estimated value shortfall of N242.53bn (consisting of N143.72bn for January 2022 recovery plus November spot arrears of N98.81bn) is to be recovered from February 2022 proceed due for sharing at the March 2022 FAAC meeting.”
Recall that in February this year, the NNPC remitted no money to FAAC due to its huge fuel subsidy spending and subsequent deduction from the Federation Account.
On March 3, 2022, state governors lambasted the NNPC for not remitting any funds at last month’s FAAC meeting.
The Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and Governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi, had also wondered how the oil firm was bold enough to declare profit when it had not been meeting its FAAC obligations.
Fayemi had disclosed this alongside other governors during the Nigerian Governors’ Forum session on natural resources at the Nigeria International Energy Summit 2022 in Abuja.
He specifically pointed out that in the last Federation Accounts Allocation Committee meeting in February, the NNPC made zero remittance to the federation.
“We’ve just had the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee meeting a couple of days ago and the NNPC contributed zero to the Federation Accounts this month,” the governor had stated.
Various industry operators told our correspondent that unless the fuel subsidy regime was halted, the deductions might continue, as NNPC had been the sole importer of petrol into Nigeria for more than four years running.
The oil firm had also been shouldering the cost of subsidy on petrol all these years. The actual cost of the commodity is far higher than the approved N162-N165/litre pump price.
The President, Petroleum Products Retail Outlets owners Association of Nigeria, Billy Gillis-Harry, explained that the actual cost of petrol without subsidy was usually a little higher than that of diesel.
He stated that if not for subsidy, PMS would be selling around N550 to N600/litre going by the rise in crude price.
The approved subsidised pump price of PMS in Nigeria is between N162 to N165/litre, but oil marketers stated that the actual cost should be a little higher or about the same price of diesel had it been PMS was deregulated.
The PETROAN president further stated that the N3tn that was projected by the government as subsidy spendings in 2022 might double before the end of the year if the crude oil price continues to rise.
Meanwhile, in NNPC’s latest presentation to FAAC seen in Abuja on Friday, the firm stated that its overall crude oil lifting of 8.13 million barrels (export and domestic crude) in December 2021 recorded 2.21 per cent decrease relative to the 8.31 million barrels lifted in November 2021.
It said Nigeria recorded an average production of 1.31 million barrels in December 2021, adding that crude oil export revenue received in January 2022 amounted to $2.23m.
The report stated that the sum of N253.36bn was the gross domestic crude oil and gas revenue for the month of January 2022. https://punchng.com/well-deduct-n242-53bn-fuel-subsidy-from-faac-this-month-nnpc/

Politics › Poor Welfare: You've No Right To Protest, Embark On Strike - IGP To Junior Offic by BeeBeeOoh(op): 9:16pm On Mar 19, 2022*. Modified: 10:34am On Mar 20, 2022 |
Mr Baba stressed that the force was bound by discipline, hence officers would not resort to such drastic measures to drive home their demands. The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba has warned aggrieved police officers that they lacked the right to protest or embark on the nationwide strike.
Some officer of the police are threatening to go on strike on March 26.
Mr Baba made the disclosure while delivering a lecture at the Force headquarters in Abuja on Thursday.
Addressing reports that junior ranking officers were planning to stage a protest at Eagles Square in Abuja on March 26 over unpaid emoluments, poor working conditions, tax waiver among other reasons, Mr Baba stressed that the force was bound by discipline, hence officers would not resort to such drastic measures to drive home their demands.
“Since the police force is a regimental and disciplinary organisation. Its members cannot embark on strike, therefore all rumours concerning the strike should be disregarded,” partly reads the outcome of the IGP’s lecture.
In the same lecture, Mr Baba urged officers to pray for their new salaries to be paid at the end of the month.
Meanwhile, acting police spokesman Muyiwa Adejobi had earlier this week released a statement to debunk reports of the proposed industrial action. He warned that grave consequences would bedevil nigerians should police officers go on strike.
“The men and women of the Nigeria Police Force are fully aware that a strike action or other deliberate disruption of law enforcement services by any security organisation is mutinous and the personnel of the Force would not degenerate at any point to that level of disloyalty and indiscipline, as policing services are paramount and essential in the maintenance of orderliness and peace in the nation,” Mr Adejobi said in the statement. https://gazettengr.com/police-officers-have-no-rights-to-down-tools-over-poor-welfare-ig-usman/Lalasticlala, Mynd44

Politics › EFCC Detectives Quiz Obiano Over ₦5b Sure-P, ₦37b Security Votes Spending by BeeBeeOoh(op): 5:33am On Mar 19, 2022 |
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday moved ex-Governor Willy Obiano from Lagos to Abuja for quizzing over alleged N42 billion fraud.
Obiano was arrested at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja on Thursday night a few hours after he handed over power to Prof. Charles Soludo in Awka, and subsequently lost his immunity from arrest.
The former governor was said to be on his way to the United States where he was residing before his election eight years ago.
He is alleged to have mismanaged his security vote while in office.
Some of the funds were allegedly diverted to political activities.
It was learnt that Obiano was moved to Abuja because the desk handling his case in the last two years is at the EFCC’s headquarters.
A top source, who spoke in confidence, said: “Willie Obiano was arrested for alleged misappropriation of public funds, including N5bn Sure-P and N37 billion security vote which was withdrawn in cash.”
“Part of the funds was also allegedly diverted to finance political activities in the state.
“Our detectives have been grilling him on these allegations. We will keep you updated. ”
The Head of Media and Publicity of EFCC, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, said: “Yes, the ex-governor is now with our team in Abuja.
“It is too early to talk about ongoing investigation.”
The EFCC had placed Obiano on its watch list in November 2021.
The anti-graft agency, in a November 15, 2021 letter to the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), had requested him to keep watch on Obiano and inform it anytime he tried to travel out of the country from any of the international airports and other points of entry and exit.
The agency did not say why it took the action, but sources said it has in its possession some petitions against Obiano on his management of the financial resources of Anambra State during his tenure.
One of the petitions written by some citizens of the state raised questions over the spending of the N17 billion Paris Club refund to the state and security vote.
Some other petitioners alleged mismanagement of the huge sums of money left in the state’s coffers by Obiano’s immediate predecessor, Peter Obi.
The EFCC had previously questioned some commissioners and principal officers over the alleged mismanagement of the state funds.
Obiano’s Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Mr. C-Don Adinuba, had dismissed the EFCC letter placing the then governor on watch list as inelegant “when it claimed in the sponsored press report that it received intelligence reports that the governor plans to ‘flee’ from Nigeria once he hands over power next March 17 to the newly elected Anambra State governor, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo.” https://thenationonlineng.net/efcc-detectives-quiz-obiano-over-n42b-spending/

Politics › Obiano's Arrest: CACOL Hails EFCC, Urges Them Not To Leave Any Stone Unturned by BeeBeeOoh(op): 9:42pm On Mar 18, 2022 |
The Centre for Anti-Corruption and Open Leadership, CACOL, on Friday, hailed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for arresting former Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, at the Murtala Muhammad International Airport, Lagos.
Obiano was reportedly on his way out of the country to Houston, Texas in the United States after handing over to his successor, Governor Charles Soludo.
It was reported last November that the EFCC had placed Obiano on a watchlist.
The EFCC had requested the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to inform it anytime Obiano is travelling out of the country from any of the international airports, as well as other points of entry and exit.
In a release issued by the organization’s Director of Administration and Programmes, Tola Oresanwo, on behalf of its Chairman, Comrade Debo Adeniran, he noted, “Corruption allegations are weighty issues that must never be handled with kid’s gloves or trivialized at any rate, especially when it involves people we have placed in trust of our commonwealth, for administrative, economic and security of lives and properties of the citizenry. If you look at this particular matter that involves Mr. Willie Obiano, you will notice that he had been under EFCC watchlist for some time and it was not a surprise to hear that immediately after the swearing in of the new governor, he made his way towards the Airport with a view to jet out of the country.
“We would like to commend the EFCC for this intuitive action carried out to prevent the Ex-Governor from evading justice as we believe this singular action will deter others with transient immunity from committing or engaging in corruption while in office knowing fully well that they shall be called upon to give account of their stewardship whenever their tenure expires.
“Without prejudice to the investigation and prosecution that will eventually follow this episode, CACOL wishes to reiterate the popular adage within legal circle that, ‘he who comes to equity must come with clean hands’, we expect the EFCC not to leave any stone unturned in couching charges against the former governor since it is presumed that his investigation would have been concluded before the end of his tenure. The least we expect is that since he cannot be charged this weekend, we expect that first thing Monday morning he would find himself face to face with the law and we expect EFCC to expedite action in ensuring that there is diligent prosecution with a view to getting an adequate penalty on conviction.
“If tracking and averting corruption is usually better than detecting and applying necessary sanction as a deterrent, anywhere in the world, the situation is actually truer here; this is why we have appealed to the federal government to set up special courts for trial of Corruption cases, especially the ones involving Government officials, strengthening of existing laws towards ensuring that no corrupt official gets away with looting or misapplication of our collective wealth, under any technicalities or manipulations.”
The CACOL Boss added: “based on all our past experiences, only very few governors have been exonerated or have come out without corruption baggage after their tenure of office. On this note, we believe that it is not out of place to presume any outgoing governor corrupt until he is able to prove otherwise, without prejudice to all evidence and witnesses that EFCC could have gathered against him before he was arrested.
“We would also suggest that anti-corruption agencies should set up a full-fledged investigative unit that would oversee the activities of all elected officials that are enjoying immunity while their tenure lasts and this includes President, Vice President and their families, Governors, deputy governors and their families etc. There should be a particular unit that will follow up every step they take that involves expenditure. That would help them to make prompt arrest and quick prosecution of such officials when their tenure lapses.
“It is therefore incumbent on the anti-graft agencies to intensify their commendable efforts in tracking, investigation, arraignment and effective prosecution of all corrupt officials to avert a situation whereby the court would be left with no other choice than to order the release of a known corrupt public official for lack of diligent prosecution or perpetual detention without trial.” https://dailypost.ng/2022/03/18/obianos-arrest-cacol-hails-efcc-makes-demand/

Politics › Help Fast-Track Approval Of $500 Million NTA Loan - Lai Mohammed To Chinese Envo by BeeBeeOoh(op): 9:40pm On Mar 17, 2022*. Modified: 10:05pm On Mar 18, 2022 |
The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, on Thursday, appealed to the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Chun Jian Chun, to help Nigeria to fast-track the evaluation and approval of a $500 million loan for the execution of three major projects in the broadcast sector.
Mohammed was quoted to have said this during the visit of the Chinese Ambassador to his office in Abuja.
A statement signed by the Special Assistant to the President on Media, Office of the Minister of Information and Culture, Segun Adeyemi, added that Mohammed also called for the signing of the two Memoranda of Understanding between Nigeria and China in an effort to boost tourism between the two countries.
“Worthy of mention, Your Excellency, is the $500 million loan which we are seeking from the China Export-Import Bank for three major projects — the digitisation of the NTA, the construction of a headquarters complex and transmission network for Integrated Television Services, a Federal Government-owned signal distributor that is a major component of the country’s Digital Switch Over, and the construction of an ultra-modern Media City in Ikorodu.
”I want to use this opportunity to appeal to Your Excellency to continue to use your good offices to fast-track the evaluation and approval process of the loan by the China Export-Import Bank, and to thank you for your efforts so far in this regard.
“There are two MoU between Nigeria and China on the Facilitation of Group Travels by Chinese Tourists to Nigeria and Travel Facilitation through the Approved Destination Status. Though the two MoU date back to 2019, they have not been signed. It is important that our two countries work together to negotiate and sign these MoU to promote tourism between them.”
In his remarks, Ambassador Chui said China was re-strategising its bilateral relations with Nigeria to focus on Growth, Development and Progress.
He said the new strategy, tagged ‘5 GIST’ will be a holistic, complete and sustained approach to focus on political support, economic cooperation, security and military collaboration, international affairs coordination, infrastructure, ICT, industry, investment, import and export, among others.
The Ambassador said the new focus will be anchored on people-to-people communication and relationship as well as cultural exchanges. https://punchng.com/help-fast-track-approval-of-500m-nta-loan-lai-mohammed-urges-chinese-envoy/Lalasticlala, Mynd44 |

Politics › Petrol, Power Shortages: I Apologize - Buhari Send Message To Nigerians by BeeBeeOoh(op): 10:22pm On Mar 16, 2022 |
President Muhammadu Buhari has sent a message to Nigerians, regarding the shortage of petrol and electricity in the country.
Buhari, who apologized, expressed sincere regrets for the inconvenience caused to citizens of the country following a prolonged shortage of petroleum products, something that the administration has successfully averted in its seven years in office.
This was disclosed in a statement by Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, on Wednesday.
According to the President, “the administration knows the fuel shortage has placed a strain on Nigerian citizens and businesses, but relief is on the way. I especially apologize to all sections of society for this.
“The government is working round the clock to attend to this issue. An action plan agreed upon earlier this month is being implemented to address the scarcity. Working together with the Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria (MOMAN) and the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), this plan is now bearing fruit. Sufficient fuel supply has returned to a handful of states, with the queues at stations falling. In the coming days, we expect this to be the case across the rest of the country.
“Looking to the longer term, funds are being targeted toward keeping fuel availability affordable for the country. The international energy markets have surged drastically in recent months, the government will, however, ensure that
consumers are protected against these price spikes.”
The President added that he has received information that some people are not behaving properly at the depots and among owners of petrol stations and in this regard, he has directed the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), the NNPC and the entire security apparatus of the nation to take strong action against those responsible.
On the issue of electricity blackouts being experienced across the nation, President Buhari remarked that “the blackouts seen in the national grid are also being addressed. A dip in hydroelectric generation due to seasonal pressures has coincided with technical and supply problems at thermal stations. On this, the government is also working tirelessly to resolve the issues at the latter to guarantee sufficient power flows into the national grid.”
As part of emergency measures put in place following a meeting convened with key stakeholders to address the low power generation in the country, the main challenge was identified as being one of low gas power generation as a result of sabotage of gas pipelines leading to the shutdown of power plants coupled with ongoing routine maintenance on other gas power plants.
To recover over 1000MW, actions were agreed upon between the players in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) and also NNPC. The actions targeted the National Integrated Power Project (NIPP) plants, (Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) and power plants run under NNPC Joint Ventures, Agip and Shell (NAOC and SPDC) and progress on the key actions have already ensured the restoration to the grid of 375MW after the pipeline from “Okpai 1” was repaired.
To also ramp up the underutilised capacity of the NDPHC capacity, a USD 50 Million Gas Supply agreement is being finalized to secure the sustainability of up to 800MW of underutilized NIPP assets.
The President assures that the government’s attention to these problems will bear fruits very soon. https://dailypost.ng/2022/03/16/petrol-power-shortages-i-apologize-buhari-sends-message-to-nigerians/
