The President, Muhammadu Buhari has threatened any corrupt individual behind his election into office noting that they will not be spared in the ongoing anti-corruption fight.
Buhari issued the threat while speaking in an interview he granted a magazine, The Interview. He also noted that some persons which he failed to name pressurized him into running for office adding that the pressure and insistence was so great that he finally yielded.

Recall that the Kaduna state Governor, Nasir El-Rufai some months ago credited his governorship aspiration to the President adding that he was also forced to run for the state office by the President after his contributions to igniting the Presidential ambition in Buhari.

Buhari further faulted the view that he was sparing members of his political party, All Progressive Congress, APC. He said: “Do you just grab people along the road and take them off to court for trial just because you want to create a semblance of balance?

“First, there has to be an accusation which must be properly investigated, and when a prima facie case has been built, you prosecute.
“If any of my backers or party (APC) members has anything established against them, let’s see whether I will shield anyone from prosecution.

“There seems to be a preponderance of the People Democratic Party members standing trial because they had been in power for 16 years, they had access to the public treasury and abused the trust reposed in them.

“You can be assured that anybody caught in corruption will answer for it irrespective of party, tribe or religion.”

Buhari while speaking on the pressure mounted upon him to contest said those who pressured him knew he had good intentions for the country, he added that they had faith in him to restore the nation which was already falling apart at the time to its glory days.

“You will recall that shortly before the 2011 presidential election, I had said it was the last time I would offer myself for elective position and I meant it, but the following years, we saw our country virtually falling apart on all fronts.

“People felt a rescue exercise was necessary and a large number believed I could do it.
“They made overtures to me and the pressure was so enormous that I could not say no. As they say, the rest is history”.

President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, to increase the tempo on crude oil exploration activities in the northern part of the country.
Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Mr. Maikanti Baru, who disclosed this, yesterday, when governor of Bauchi State, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, paid him a courtesy visit in Abuja, also lamented that Nigeria was currently facing difficult times.

Baru said the NNPC currently had exploration activities going on in the frontier basin in Chad and also in some areas close to the Kolmani River, located in Bauchi State, where Shell had made some indicative discovery of hydrocarbons.

According to him, the President has directed the NNPC to go into that area to improve and further explore the magnitude and prospect of those finds.
In response to the directive of the President, Baru disclosed that the NNPC was currently taking steps to re-strategise and get into those regions to step up crude oil exploration activities.

“We will re-invigorate the Frontier Exploration Services and see how they collaborate with the Northern Nigeria Development Company, NNDC.
‘’NNDC is holding bloc 809 where we have some of the finds and also the Department for Petroleum Resources, DPR, for the other blocs that have not been assigned,” Baru added.

On the tough economic situation, Baru lamented that the various attacks on oil and gas assets across the country was making it difficult for the corporation to meet its financial obligations to the country.

He said: “It is a very difficult time for us with all the leakages that we suffer, especially infractions on our infrastructure, in terms of pipeline vandalism and theft to be able to meet our obligations to the Federation Account Allocation Committee, FAAC.

ABUJA—President Muhammadu Buhari said, yesterday, in Abuja that Nigeria was now learning the ropes in diversification of its economy.
Speaking when he received a special envoy from the President of Islamic Republic of Iran, Mohammad Javad Zarif, at State House, the President commended the Iranian government for working to launch itself among the developed nations of the world.

The President said his government was working assiduously to ameliorate the challenges faced by the Nigerian economy within a short period, saying he would tap from the experiences of countries like Iran which had thrived in adversity.

He said the Iranian economy remained an inspiration for Nigeria in the deployment of technology to harness and export gas, grow food for the populace and promote entrepreneurship in education.
The President noted that Nigeria had all the potentials to grow into a great economy through more inclusive planning, consistency in government policies and commitment to the realization of development targets.

“The progress made by Iran within a short period of 30 years is really commendable. Within the period, you have been able to harness gas flaring, and you are now exporting.

‘’You have recorded strides in security, manufacturing, agriculture and technology.
“You have also achieved a lot in nuclear research.
‘’I must also congratulate you for successfully negotiating with America and the European countries on the development of your nuclear energy.

“In Nigeria, we are learning. We are learning the hard way through hardship, and we are learning very quickly on how to explore other sectors of the economy like gas, solid minerals and agriculture for growth.

“We are grateful for your support and cooperation in opening up the Nigerian economy for diversification,” he said.

In his remark, the Iranian envoy, who is also the Minister of Foreign Affairs, said the Iranian government would support the ongoing restructuring of the Nigerian economy.
“We are very keen to see a better and stronger relationship with Nigeria, which is the largest country in Africa and a major global player,” he said.

Zarif said he came to Nigeria with a delegation of more than 70 members of the Iranian business community, who had already started discussions in investing in sectors as banking, education, scholarship, agriculture, energy, tourism and technology development.
