Crime › Missing Fees: Undergraduate Attempts Suicide, Says Life Has Been Unfair by BeeBeeOoh(op): 8:06am On Jul 02, 2016
Tunde Olaniyan, an Ordinary National Diploma, OND student of the Lagos State Polytechnic , can be described as the proverbial cat with nine lives owing to his recent  narrow escape from a suicidal act. The 21-year-old Accountancy student who concluded to end it all by drinking a poisonous substance last month , left a suicide note for his parents, notifying them of his action. Reason?  His school fees which his family struggled to gather was stolen by suspected pick pockets, while on his way to school penultimate Tuesday, an act he concluded had dashed his hope of furthering his education.

Confusion set in for the undergraduate who upon arriving school , decided to bring the N45,000 which he neatly  wrapped in a piece of paper out of his nap sac,  only to discover that  the bag was  torn  by the side, from where the money  was tactically  stolen. Calling his parents was the last thing on his mind . Rather, the dark skinned student   walked absent-mindedly out of the class room, down to a church in Isolo area of Lagos  where he  sleeps at night.

Crime Guard investigation revealed that the Olanyan family struggle for survival,  like several other Nigerians out there, began after its bread winner , Amos Olaniyan,  was verbally suspended  from the Nigeria Police same year Tunde was born,  by the Police Commissioner in Oyo state, Abubakar  Tsav, over alleged bribery and corruption . Although report had it that the Senate had on December 15 , 2016  directed  his reinstatement , after due investigation which exonerated Amos from the allegation, till date, Police authorities are yet  to   adhere  to the directive. Since his suspension as a Sergeant, Amos Olaniya has been engaged in all manner of menial jobs  in a bid to eke out a living for his family.  He is at the moment a driver in Ibadan, Oyo state, from where he visits his family in Lagos. It was further gathered that Amos’s monthly salary and proceeds from his wife’s trade was put together to make up the N45,000 needed for their son’s school fees.

Lamentation

In this interview with Crime Guard, the undergraduate lamented : “ Things have not been easy for my family. I grew up with the hope  of going to  higher institution and thereafter work   with the certificate, instead of taking to  dubious ways of making it. So, my admission letter into LASPOTECH to study accountancy came as an answered prayer to my dream. But fate has been so   unkind to me, as each time I bore the hardship, I face more challenges.

“My parents managed to give me between N800 and N1000 from Iyana- Ipaja to Isolo as pocket  money  for one week. Out of it is my   transport fare to and fro . To complement what they gave me, I resorted to work as a bus conductor.  We plied Iyana-Ipaja to Yaba . I woke up as early as 5am , worked until 10am and thereafter go to school. I was earning N700 and N1000 daily, depending  on the number of turns we run .

“But I was forced to stop in my OND 1 second semester, when it started having a negative effect on my academic performance, as I sometimes missed classes and didn’t  have  much time to read. I had no choice than to depend on my parents who were barely struggling to survive. My mother is a petty trader while my father is a driver. “They struggled to raise N45,000 for my OND 2 school fees in January. I  left home that fateful day with the hope of paying the money into the bank when I  got to school. But to my dismay, I discovered that the money had disappeared. Where do  I  get such amount was the first question that pooped into my head. Quickly,  I   put a call across to my uncle in Maiduguri but it was not going through. I tried him all week to no avail.

Thought of how to pay the money enveloped my mind every time I slept in the church which served as a home to me because I could not afford to rent an apartment like other fortunate students. I could not call my parents to tell them in order not to add to their burden. I could not call my older siblings either, because they all have their respective challenges”, he said. Bottled with the inability to unravel a solution to the missing money, Tunde managed to finish his first semester examination with an expression of uncertainty and hopelessness.

Suicide attempt

He managed to hold on until the second semester in March. But reached a cross road two weeks to the examination   on May 25 2016, owing to his inability to print out his course forms online. “I could not print out my course forms because I had not paid the fees. At that moment I became confused and  went home with a decision to end it all. That morning, after my mother had gone to the market, with my father away in Ibadan where he works as a driver,  I went to buy GO 90, an insecticide from a kiosk, for N50.

“Thereafter, I scribbled a suicide note informing my parents the reason  I had to take my life. I dropped the letter and drank the liquid substance   while   I waited for death to come. About five minutes later, the first sign of death came with  a sharp pain in my abdomen. Then, the whole apartment  began to spin. That was all I could remember, as I passed out.”

Sister to his rescue

While he was writhing in pains on the bare floor, his immediate elder sister ,  whom Crime Guard gathered  was married with two children but had to move to her parents  one room apartment at Fagbayi street , after she  was delivered of a baby , walked inside. Tension heightened when she discovered that Tunde was motionless. On further observation, she discovered the suicide note close to him  and immediately let out a squeaky noise which alerted neighbours who rushed Tunde to Omoju hospital in Baruwa area of Ipaja, Lagos , where doctors battled to revive him hours later .    Crime Guard gathered that family members and friends contributed towards payment of the lost school fees.

Needs N7500 to conclude project

Though he has concluded his second semester examination but  financial difficulty still stares him in the eye and until that is attended to, he might not conclude his OND course. According to him “ I am in chapter two of my  project work  but I  can’t continue because of lack of cash. I need at least N7.500 for typing, printing, photocopying and binding. I hope to look for job with the OND and later further my study”, he stated in an emotion- laden tone.

Education › Jubilation In OAU As FG Dissolves Governing Council by BeeBeeOoh(op): 7:52am On Jul 02, 2016
Workers and students of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, on Friday jubilated following the dissolution of the university’s governing council by the Federal Government.
The dissolution of the governing council headed Prof. Ndoma Egba was said to have been announced on the Nigerian Television Authority late night Thursday.

The Public Relations Officer of the OAU, Mr. Biodun Olanrewaju, also confirmed the dissolution in Osogbo on Friday.
“I also saw the advertorial announcing the dissolution,” Olanrewaju said.

The Chairman of the Non-Academic Staff Union in the university, Mr. Wole Odewumi, said that members of his union and those of the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities had been jubilating following the dissolution.

Odewumi said the appointment of the new Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ayobami Salami, had also been nullified.

He said the Federal Government would appoint an acting vice-chancellor to direct the affairs of the university pending the constitution of a new governing council which would appoint a substantive VC.

The NASU chairman said workers had shut down the university’s senate building with the aim of preventing vital documents and property of the university from being stolen.
He said, “We are very happy today. We have been jubilating since we heard the announcement.

“Yes, it is true that the Federal Government has dissolved the governing council.
“We are still monitoring activities at the university’s senate building; we don’t want anything to be stolen from the place.

Crime › Why I Cut-off My Step Son's Genitals - Woman Says by BeeBeeOoh(op): 5:08am On Jul 02, 2016
Bara’atu Muhammad who cuts off her stepson penis and Buhari when he was brought to IBB hospital in his blood
The people of Dafe village, a Gbagyi community in Shiroro local government area of Niger State, were terrified when a 17-year-old housewife, Bara’atu Muhammad cut-off the genitals of her 23-day-old stepson, Buhari Muhammad, spurred by jealousy.

Daily Trust was gathered that the boy’s father, Muhammadu Dauda married Buhari’s mother seven years ago and he is the first child of the union. He married Bara’atu just four months ago. All of them hail from Dafe village.

With qualms, Bara’atu confessed that she took the infant from his mother’s room where he was sleeping, to the toilet where she chopped-off his penis with a kitchen knife.
“I decided to do that in retaliation to insults (I’ve been receiving) from his mother. She has been insulting me,” she explained.

“Anytime I complained to our husband, he will not take action. That was the major reason I used our kitchen knife to cut off his penis.”
The husband, Muhammad Dauda denied that Buhari’s mother, Basira was in the habit of insulting Bara’atu, adding that the offending wife never reported Basira to him and that as far as he was concerned they were living in peace.

“I never heard them quarrelling, I never saw them fighting. My house is intact. There was no division. I treated them equally,” Dauda insisted, adding that he was shocked when he heard what happened to his son.

He expressed shock that Bara’atu could carry out such a dastardly act: “She never showed any sign of madness. She is mentally okay.”
Buhari’s 21-year-old mother, Basira also denied Bara’atu’s allegations, saying she never insulted her younger mate. “Ever since she was married and came to the house, I took her as my younger sister. That was why I allowed her to be close to my son. I didn’t know that she was planning to kill my son,” she lamented.

Dr. Ibrahim Abdullahi who is taking care of the boy at the IBB Specialist Hospital, Minna, said his penis has already been damaged and shrunken and that there was no way that it can be transplanted to its normal position.
He said the medic will however, try their best to ensure that Buhari survives and lives a normal life. Meanwhile, the Niger State government has promised to take care of Buhari’s medical bills.

The Director of Niger State Child’s Right Agency, Maryam Kolo, said that the state government will do everything possible to ensure that Buhari gets the required medical treatment for his quick recovery.

Niger State police spokesman, DSP Bala Elkana, said Bara’atu has been arraigned before a magistrate’s court and remanded in Minna prison, pending the conclusion of investigations. He added that no stone would be left unturned in ensuring that justice was done for the infant.

This incident happened a few weeks after a 21-month-old boy Musa was severely mutilated by his stepmother in Kano.

Politics › Ikpeazu & Ogar: Confusion In Abia State by BeeBeeOoh(op): 5:18am On Jul 01, 2016
•INEC issues certificate of return to Ogah

•I remain gov – Ikpeazu

•High Court stops swearing-in

•We’d work with any of them – PDP

Mr. Sampson Uchechukwu Ogah, who was declared governor-elect of Abia State on Monday by a Dederal High Court, Abuja, arrived Umuahia, the state capital yesterday in the evening saying he hoped to be sworn in today. Mr   Ogah, who landed at the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport from Abuja, after receiving certificate of return issued to him by INEC assured  of “fresh air” for the people of the state.

He arrived at the airport aboard a chartered aircraft N664D with his wife and some associates, saying that he would either be sworn in yesterday or today.
Speaking to newsmen, Ogah described his triumph as “a new dawn because fresh air has entered into Abia State.”

The national chairman of the PDP, Sen Ali Modu Sheriff said he would be willing to work with either Ikpeazu or Ogah provided the rule of law was followed. However, an Abia State High Court has directed the state chief judge not to swear-in Ogah.

Also, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, whose April election was quashed by the court, said he had already appealed the judgement and advised Oga not to show up for any swearing in. But Sampson Ogah, has insisted on being sworn in as governor, arguing that the injunction obtained by Mr. Ikpeazu was invalid coming from a subordinate court to the Federal High Court that ordered his swearing in.

Mr. Ogah said through his Media Adviser, Monday Ubani, that only an Appeal Court could grant such injunction.
He also argued that the appeal filed by the governor could not be considered a stay of action over the judgment of Justice Okon Abang.

Mr. Ogah urged the chief judge and all concerned to respect the ruling and allow him to immediately take over the reins of leadership so as to move the state forward.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) yesterday issued Certificate of Return saying it was doing so in compliance with the ruling of the Federal High Court.

Ogah received his certificate from the INEC Commissioner in charge of the South-East, Amb. Lawrence Nwuruku, on behalf of the commission in Abuja.
Amb. Nwuruku said INEC decided to present the Certificate of Return to Ogah as directed by the court.

It would be recalled that a Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday removed Ikpeazu, on the grounds that he included false information in his tax clearance certificate.

The court directed that Ikpeazu’s election certificate be withdrawn and in his place, Ogah, who was the first runner-up in the primary election of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),  should replace him.

In his ruling, Justice Okon Abang held that Ikpeazu was not qualified to contest the primary election of the PDP, which held on December 8, 2014, because he made false declaration in his INEC Form CF001 containing information of his tax certificate and personal income tax payments (P.A.Y.E.).
A statement issued  yesterday by Rotimi Lawrence Oyekanmi, the  Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, said  Ogah received his certificate based on the receipt of a certified true copy of the judgment signed by the FCT High Court  Registrar, Mr. Olawale M. Oladoyin, dated 27th June 2016 and served on INEC.

According to him, Justice Abang specifically ordered INEC, which was the 3rd Defendant in the case  “to issue Certificate of Return to the Plaintiff, Dr Sampson Uchechukwu Ogah as Governor of Abia State, for the election held on 11th April, 2015 and restore all entitlements to him as the elected Governor of Abia State.  Dr Okezie Ikpeazu is hereby ordered to vacate office as Governor of Abia State.”

Ikpeazu secures court Injunction, says ‘I remain governor’
However, embattled governor Ikpeazu yesterday obtained an ex-parte order at the Abia State High Court sitting in Osisioma Ngwa restraining the state chief judge or any judicial officer from swearing in Dr Ogah as governor of the state.
The injunction directed that the swearing in should not hold pending the determination of the motion on notice.

“Our laws are clear on this matter. No one may be issued with a Certificate of Return, let alone be sworn in as governor when there is a subsisting appeal and application for stay. I want to appeal to Abians to remain calm and law abiding in the face of this provocation,” he said.

Our correspondent reports that there was mixed reactions in major towns and cities in Abia State, as some supporters of the PDP were happy that wherever the pendulum swings, the party will still be in power.
Some party faithfuls believed that INEC had erred by giving a Certificate of Return to Ogah while others said Ikpeazu was paying a price for evading tax.

Ikpeazu, who was earlier in the morning set to attend the maiden  edition of Eminent Person Lecture Series in Abia State University, shelved the plan while those already at the venue  departed when the news reached them.
Lawyers react

A legal practitioner, Godwin Obla says the Certificate of Return issued to Ogah “is an ordinary piece of paper since the chief Judge of Abia state has not administered the Oath of office on him.”

Obla said that until Ikpeazu exhausted his 21 days right of appeal, the certificate of return issued to  Ogah is a piece of paper.
“If Ikeazie succeeds at the Court of Appeal, does it mean that INEC will now issue another certificate of return?” Obla asked.
He wondered why INEC was in a hurry, adding that the electoral empire ought to have acted responsibly.

Another lawyer, Abubakar Magaji SAN, in his reaction said Justice Abang’s decision was not a final judgment, adding that the sitting governor still has a right of appeal.
Magaji said that INEC’s action can only be right if the sitting Governor had not filed an appeal.

Similarly, Sebastine Hon, SAN said “if after INEC became aware of the notice of appeal and motion for stay of execution, but went ahead to issue a Certificate of Return to Mr. Ogah, then its action is null and void.

“The jurisdiction of the court of Appeal to deal one way or the other with the motion for stay should not be frustrated under any guise. The President and the Inspector –General of Police should quickly intervene to stop graduation to constitutional anarchy in Abia State,” he said.
“This could create confusion in the state. I don’t know why INEC issued the certificate of return. I understand there is an appeal at the Appeal Court and that should serve as a stay.

“I don’t know the legal authority INEC relied upon, we cannot have two governors in a state,” said Abeny Mohammed, SAN).
Another lawyer, Abdul Mahmud, said “A court that is aware that a court of coordinate jurisdiction has given an order on a matter, ought not to proceed to give another order.

However, an activist, Barrister Abubakar Sanni, said that issuing the Certificate of Return to Ogah was in order. According to him, “It is high time people in government started obeying Court orders.

Politics › Femi-fani Kayode: A Bigot In Jail, By Usama Dandare by BeeBeeOoh(op):
“God willing am in custody of EFCC, but to me is a great time to communicate with God just the way Paul and other brethren did in their days. I am here not only because my party gave me money to campaign for them like every other politician even in APC. But if it might interest you to know, what is going on is the persecution of Christians. Before i forget, this message should be taken to apostle Johnson Suleman the founder of OMEGA fire ministry. I had a revelation that they are planing to attack him. Because he is one of the major voice crying out for justice in the body of Christ. The Muslims are out to persecute the Christians.” - Femi Fani-Kayode

The speed with which Femi Fani-Kayode (FFK) manufactured his latest hypocrisy admonishing Nigerian Christians to take up arms against their Muslim brothers in retaliation of the ongoing persecution and assault against Christians and Christianity – as Femi Fani-Kayode concocted from his prison cell – by the current incorruptible regime of President Muhammadu Buhari has absolutely left all well meaning spectators (I inclusive) in deep amusement. This latest hypocrisy perhaps prompted the penning down of this piece, with an intent to find answers to these fundamental questions: why is FFK all out to brainwash and incite our Christian brothers against Nigerian Muslims? Does he have some interior motives in marrying his ongoing corruption trial with his religious belief?

First, Femi Fani-Kayode, was accused of diverting campaign funds when he was the spokesman for the Goodluck Jonathan Campaign Organisation, and got arrested by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) on Monday, May 9, 2016, after undergoing interrogations at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja.

Since then, he has been in detention at EFCC detention facility. Until earlier this week when he was arraigned before an Abuja high court on a 17-count charge of corruption and money laundering to the tune of N4.7 billion, alongside Mrs. Nenadi Usman and others, they were all remanded in prison pending a court hearing of their bail application later today.

FFK is alleged to have took part in the illegal withdrawal of N2.5billion directly from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and disbursed to chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Goodluck Support Group (GSG), where the don allocated to himself a whopping sum of N840 million, while the remaining funds was used in blackmailing opposition politicians and sponsoring hate speeches with the intent of dividing Nigerians along ethno-religious lines through some hate media channels.

News coming out from Kuje central prison disclose that FFK has Metamorphosed into a self acclaimed pastor overnight and had commenced parading himself as a holy man of God, to an extent of liking himself to Paul (who unarguably equals no other human figure in the Bible that demonstrated more humility while sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ) and other biblical brethrens whom suffered monumental persecution while preaching Christianity during their days.

He wakes fellow prisoners up every morning with worship and praise songs and subjects them daily to intense prayer sessions by the hour, and also going round the prison cells vowing fellow inmates that he will intervene in their favour and start strategic public relations efforts in their interest to repair their badly damaged reputation. What a comedy!

Well, it isn’t a surprise in anyway to see FFK shelving his true colours and disguise as a man of God to score some cheap political points. It’s only habitual of a man who always changes colour when it serves his purpose, and change identity to go in line with his hypocritical way of life. However, what is surprising and perhaps more alarming is his latest venomous vulgar liking his ongoing corruption trial to a crusade against Christians and Christianity to pave way for President Muhammadu Buhari’s agenda of Islamizing Nigeria.

Lest I forget, this is a man who just yesterday was part of the political oppurtunists that committed a monumental rape on our national treasury, plundered the nation’s wealth, and even headed the campaign for the re-election of the most dangerously and recklessly corrupt administration in the history of man.

Yet, the same man is now shamelessly trying to play religious cards in a bid to cover up his daylight robbery on our hard earned resources.

After taken part in stealing all the savings in our nation’s coffers, FFK is now hell-bent on creating confusion and mixing religion with the ongoing degoatification process in an attempt to instigate religious violence, when it’s glaring that his trial has nothing to do with religion.

Yes, several Christians were arrested and currently on trial as we speak, likewise several Muslims are also facing the same retributions. If as long as you want me to believe that the ongoing anti-corruption crusade embarked upon by the government of today is religiously motivated, then you must without any delay tell whether Col. Sambo Dasuki is an Anglican or a Catholic.

Which church did Murtala Nyako attended last Sunday? Which church did the likes of Sule Lamido, Mal Ibrahim Shekarau, Bello Halliru Gwandu, Col. Ja’afaru Isa, and Attahiru Bafarawa to mention just a few converted to Christianity?

Ironically, Femi Fan-Kayode presents the sharp, narrow shadow of an irresponsible and drunk religious bigot. Religious intolerance is an unfortunate trend which Nigerians have turned into a socio-political culture adopted in their day-to-day activities.

And with the likes of Femi Fani-Kayode’s hypocrisy, religiously laced writings having the tendency of inciting Nigerians to turn against one another, the citizenry are therefore distracted from focusing on allegations of corruption and financial misappropriation against the thieving elites. Thus, transferring individual culpabilities into communal or religious liabilities. With his tales of hate, enmity and sheer hypocrisy against Muslims and Islam, FFK could easily pass through ISIS recruitment test – who are all out to destroy Islam.

I am very optimistic he can easily build an illustrious and fruitful career in helping the enemies of Islam (ISIS and Boko Haram) to cleanse the entire Muslim population.
Instead of FFK to answer his corruption charges and do exactly what the holy bible instructed, he’s here lashing out at imaginary foes in continuation of the idiotic and irresponsible tradition of his late father – overheating the polity.

Since FFK is claiming to be a good Christian, though I wonder which born again Christian will have children out of wedlock, this is what the holy Bible says to him and his likes: In Leviticus chapter 6:2-7, God said to Moses: “When a person sins and commits a trespass against the Lord by deceiving his fellow citizen in regard to something held in trust, or a pledge, or something stolen, or by extorting something from his fellow citizen, (6:3) or has found something lost and denies it and swears falsely concerning any one of the things that someone might do to sin – (6:4) when it happens that he sins and he is found guilty, then he must return whatever he had stolen, or whatever he had extorted, or the thing that he had held in trust, or the lost thing that he had found, (6:5) or anything about which he swears falsely. He must restore it in full and add one fifth to it; he must give it back to its rightful owner. (6:6) Then he must bring his guilt offering to the Lord, a flawless ram from the flock, convertible into silver shekels, for a guilt offering to the priest. (6:7) So the priest will make atonement on his behalf before the Lord and he will be forgiven for whatever he has done to become guilty.”

So, FFK should shut his tap running mouth up and do the needful, the earlier he stop viewing everything about Nigeria from the prism of ethnicity and religion, the better for the rest of us. His bigotry and religious hypocrisy have no place in the collective psyche of Nigerians unless the gullible few,  nor a solution to regain his freedom.

What Femi Fani-Kayode and his likes need to understand here is that the ongoing anti-corruption crusade is just starting and no amount of pressure, hypocrisy, threats or intimidation can stop Nigeria’s readiness to fight and conquer corruption and its siblings no matter how and when. Fani-Kayode has only succeeded in substantiated the fact that he is an unrepentant bigot, a war monger displaying his unrefined and undiluted mediocre and religious stupidity.

He should for his own good face his trial with evidences and facts if any, and stop contaminating our atmosphere with hate and vulgarity. He should also be ashame of himself for doing what God disliked with passion – stealing – being him the good Christian he claimed, if only he knows anything called shame, but if he doesn’t, Christianity and the entire Christian world are collectively ashame on his behalf.
