Politics › Police Arrests 10 Boko Haram Suspect In Zaria by BeeBeeOoh(op): 5:50am On Jun 29, 2016 |
No fewer than 10 suspected Boko Haram members who reportedly fled Sambisa Forest in Borno State have been arrested by the Nigerian Police Force in Dogarawa area of Sabon Gari, Zaria. Daily Trust leant that the men were arrested following intelligence report.
“Some good Samaritans volunteered information to us on the activities of the suspects. We immediately mobilised with about 100 mobile police and we successfully surrounded the house the suspects were living in. We were able to apprehend them and they are in our custody at our headquarters,” Muhammad D. Shehu, police area commander in charge of Zaria, said. He explained that preliminary interrogation had shown that the suspects were formally at Darul Islam in Niger state, but moved to Sambisa forest to join Boko Haram when the settlement was sacked by the then state government.
Shehu said the ongoing onslaught by Armed Forces in the Northeast had forced the suspects to relocate to Zaria.
“Only God knows their mission here in Zaria, but my chat with them revealed that the guys were notorious. There was no sign of remorse with them. They were insisting that what they were doing was the right thing to do. This is why we are urging Nigerians to be wary of the people they live within their communities and report any suspicious movement to security agencies,” Shehu said.
Many residents of Dogarawa interviewed by our correspondent were not aware of the arrest, but they confirmed that people from different parts of the country had settled there.
Dogarawa is a suburb on the outskirt of the ancient city along the Zaria-Kano express road. The settlement is housing the Sabon Gari local government secretariat where a suicide bomber recently detonated a bomb, killing many school teachers and other civil servants undergoing a screening exercise. Also, sometimes in 2013, a Boko Haram kingpin was arrested at Kwantareshen, a neighbouring community to Dogarawa.
Security agents have in the past raided suspected hideouts of Boko Haram members at Kwangila and Gaskiya layout areas of the ancient city. http://www.dailytrust.com.ng/news/general/police-arrest-10-boko-haram-suspects-in-zaria/153094.html#SJTdIp2UCckyBuv4.99

Politics › Ikorodu Killings: Nigerians Have Lost Trust In Police- Commissioner Of Police by BeeBeeOoh(op): 5:00am On Jun 29, 2016 |
By Olasunkanmi Akoni & Monsur Olowoopejo Lagos—Apparently worried over the continued invasion of Lagos and Ogun community by unknown gunmen, Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni said residents have lost trust in the country’s police formation. Owoseni expressed his concern at the at the City Hall, Lagos, venue of the 2016 Stakeholders Forum organised by the Office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Central Business District (CBD) themed: ”Toward a Lagos Island CBD Renaissance: Meaningful Insights and Commitment,” yesterday.
The police commissioner, who was represented by Chief Superintendent of Police, Olusegun Ajamolaya, the Divisional Police Officer of Victoria Island, lamented that Nigerians do not have trust in the police recognized by the 1999 constitution.
Owoseni who was one of the discussant at the security session which also include the Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Security Trust Fund, LSSTF, Mr. Abdul-Rasak Balogun, General Manager of AIICO Insurance Plc, Mr. Moruf Apampa, Barrister Kayode Adeluola, Chief Executive Officer of Integrated System and Devices Ltd, Mr. Oluseun Mabogunje and moderated by the former secretary of LSSTF, Mr. Fola Arthur-Worrey.
According to him, “The major problem we have now is for the citizens to have trust in us; they do not trust the police they have. They believe that if they give information to the police, they will sell out. And due to this, the maximum cooperation we should get from the citizens is lacking.
“We believe that larger percent of the reasons acclaimed by the residents were stereotype. The Nigerian police are evolving daily. We want you to have faith in us and I believe that we will not disappoint you,” Owoseni added. He argued that when information are divulged earlier, it would aid crime prevention, noting “crime prevention is the key to achieving a safe and secured society. If we are able to achieve that, other aspect of policing is secondary.
This is because we will be proactive and not reactive. Owoseni said the level of insecurity in the country demanded that “everyone must be alert; that is why we are promoting community policing. Nigerians Police is not effective; we work day and night to ensure that the state is safe. “Policing Lagos is a big task especially as it concerns the population, the mode of crime committed and the unemployment rate in the state. That is why we have adopted to proactive and not the reactive strategy,” he said.
Ambode commends foreign, local investors
Meantime, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode at the same forum said that the activities of both local and foreign investors in the state are key indicators that would trigger economic growth and enhance the emerging opportunities in the socio-economic landscape of the state. The governor also commended the enthusiasm of investors and entrepreneurs to put their money in good investments in the state.
He added that the present administration is also providing more opportunities to investors and entrepreneurs in the emerging economic profile of the Lagos Mega City in the various sectors of real estate development, marine transportation, commercial and business activities. Ambode, who was represented at the Forum by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr Tunji Bello, said the focus of his administration since inception has been to put in place necessary structures that would sustain a 24/7 economy in the “New Lagos”, adding that despite the global economic challenges, “we have ensured that the business districts functioned effectively to move the wheel of economic growth in the Lagos Mega City,” he said. : http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/06/ikorodu-killings-nigerians-lost-trust-police-cp/

Politics › Boko Haram Attacking The Internet- Lt Gen. Buratai Reveals by BeeBeeOoh(op): 1:07pm On Jun 28, 2016*. Modified: 1:27pm On Jun 28, 2016 |
– Lt Gen Tukur Buratai has said that Boko Haram has been defeated on the battlefield
– The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) said the terrorist have taken the battle to cyberspace
– Buratai made the comments in reaction to the Dubai properties scandalThe COAS who spoke on Tuesday, June 28, noted that there is no need for his reaction to the story since the Federal Government has already reacted.
Lt Gen Tukur Buratai, Nigeria’s chief of army staff says Boko Haram has been defeated on the field, but are taking the battle to the internet.
Buratai asserted that the army will trail the terrorists who have migrated to the internet and defeat them there.
He made the comments while briefing journalists on this year’s Army Day celebration.
Meanwhile, groups and prominent Nigerians have call for a detailed investigation of the the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen Tukur Buratai by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the purchase of $1.5m properties in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates.
Sahara Reporters had reported that the Chief Of Army Staff and his two wives own $1.5m properties in Dubai. SERAP’s executive director, Adetokunbo Mumuni, said for the anti-corruption war to be seen as fair, the anti-graft agencies must consider whether Buratai could afford the properties based on his financial records as a civil servant.
“The bulk stops at the table of the EFCC and the ICPC to investigate the COAS. Did Buratai and his two wives acquired the property in Dubai and paid for it in a single transaction? As a civil servant, how much has he received in salaries and emoluments? Are these big enough to acquire the properties? For the anti-corruption war to be seen as fair and not selective, the anti-graft agencies must investigate Buratai. It is their duty,” he said. http://www.naij.com/874520-cheif-army-staff-reveals-shocking-secret.html?source=index_main |
Politics › PDP Crisis Will Be Over Next Week- Makarfi by BeeBeeOoh(op): 11:13am On Jun 28, 2016 |
The Chairman, National Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), Senator Ahmed Makarfi on Monday gave reasons for the current crisis rocking the party even as he expressed optimism that the crisis bedeviling the PDP would be resolved by first week of July.
He also declared that as loyal party members, members of his caretaker committee are ready to vacate their seats any time the stakeholders want them to quit. Senator Makarfi, who spoke in Abuja when he received PDP state chairmen in audience, however called on the former National Chairman of the party, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, to toe the path of peace in the interest of the resolution of the festering crisis.
Besides, he noted that PDP is like a government in waiting in view of the fact that it is both worthy and people loving. His words: “It is unfortunate what is happening but equally it is good in the sense that PDP is alive. PDP is potentially a party people love; it is party that is like a government in waiting. If it is not worth anything nobody will struggle over it”. He however expressed firm optimism that the crisis bedeviling the PDP would be resolved by first week of July but did not give details on how the crisis will be resolved by the said date saying if the crisis is allowed to fester for too long, it might be injurious to the success of the party in future elections.
According to him, “We must not over stretch this fact for too long because this is injurious to the party and can affect the fortunes of the party in the long run, not only in our attempt to retain the states we have but also winning the states we lost and capturing power at the centre in 2019”.
The former Kaduna State governor pointed out that the caretaker committee was not set up to witch hunt anybody or dissolve any state chapter of the PDP but to prepare for the party’s national convention and facilitate peaceful reconciliation of party member. Advertisement
He said, “The problem that will be there, after the national convention, those elected will have sufficient time to handle them. “We believe that if we work together the issue will be handle peaceful,” he added. Makarfi lauded the chapter chairmen of the PDP for identifying with his committee, noting that as members, they were not there to feather their political interest and assured that as loyal party members, the caretaker committee members are ready to vacate their seats any time the stakeholders want them to quit.
PDP Chairman in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Alhaji Yunisa Suleiman, who led the delegation, presented Makarfi with the resolutions of the state chairmen after their meeting saying that as state chairmen they were not comfortable with what is going on in the party particularly at the national level. His words, “We attended the last NEC which was held on May 17, which was presided over by former National Chairman, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, and which approved the last national convention held in River state on the 21 May. It is note worthy that there was no court order whatsoever or any court of competent jurisdiction restraining the party convention.
“The tenure of our national officers terminated on May 21, 2016. Just like nature abhors vacuum, the party invoked the power invested on it under section 33(5) of the constitution and disssolved the then exco led by Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, and a set up a national caretaker committee headed by Senator Ahmed Makarfi to drive the affairs of the party forward.
“They are also to organise a national convention of the party to elect fresh national officers for the party. http://www.today.ng/politics/144255/pdp-crisisll-week-makarfi
