Politics › Ben Bruce Reveals “Smartest States” In Nigeria by BeeBeeOoh(op): 8:49am On Jun 21, 2016
– Senator Ben Bruce has revealed the smartest states in Nigeria

– Ben Bruce says Abia, Anambra, Rivers, Imo  and Edo states are the smartest

– He used their educational growth as yardstick for measurement

The social-media savvy senator has said that twenty years ago the southeast states lagged in education and had poor boy child school enrollment, today they lead in WASSCE results.

Ben Murray Bruce says he just wants to make common sense.

He noted that Abia, Anambra, Rivers and Imo state came first, second, fourth and fifth respectively. Ben Bruce also commend Edo for coming in at third.

Senator Bruce said the Federal Government and other states should study what these states have been doing right and replicate it nationally.

Disclosing this via his Facebook page, Ben Bruce said what has happened in the southeast is nothing short of a miracle.

He said: “They receive some of the lowest federal allocation, yet they have achieved such remarkable educational and economic growth.

There is something to be learned from them. Is it their policy? Is it their budgeting practice? Is it their sense of community? Whatever it is, it is working!”

Ben Bruce was recently prevented from greeting President Muhammadu Buhari by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have reportedly prevented Ben Murray-Bruce .

In a series of tweets posted on Monday, May 30, the senator representing Bayelsa East senatorial district, revealed that the incident happened at the Aso Rock presidential villa during a dinner organized to mark 2016 Democracy Day.

The dinner was hosted by Buhari, and had in attendance Bukola Saraki, the president of the Senate; Yakubu Dogara, the speaker of the House of Representatives; Atiku Abubakar, a former vice president; Bola Tinubu, national leader of the All Progressives Congress, among others.

Meanwhile, the Chief Whip of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Olusola Adeyeye has cleared the air on the allegations made by Senator Ben Bruce that he was blocked by DSS officials from greeting President Buhari.

According to Adeyeye, it was Senator Dino Melaye who first went to greet those seated at the president’s table including the president in what he described as a clear breach of protocol.

Adeyeye stated that after Senator Melaye’s action, other senators got up to do the same but the scene became clumsy and indecorous prompting the DSS officials to intervene.

He also informed that an All Progressives Congress (APC) senator, Barnabas Gemade was also turned back by the security operatives, dismissing the claims of Bruce who interpreted the DSS move as political.

Shell, sorry to disappoint you this time, you will not tell us how to run our show in this country, we have decided to dialogue with them and move forward, treating them as criminals would give room for you to continue in your divide and rule system, you destroyed Ogoni, your actions led to killings in the land, that's why the ogonis don't want you back.

We would listen to your or take your advice, instead you should get ready to change your policy and do the right thing or better still leave Nigeria, can you imagine the advice you are giving, all to satisfy your selfish aim.

Politics › Militants Should Be Treated As Crimnals- Shell by BeeBeeOoh(op):
Shell Petroleum Development Company, SPDC, Nigeria, has made its stand known concerning militants operating and vandalising its pipelines in the Niger Delta, saying the group should be treated as criminals.

The company’s view was aired by its Managing Director and Country Chair, Osagie Okunbor during a chat with Business Times over the weekend.

While describing the havoc already wreaked by militants on the company’s pipelines and his perception about the group, Okunbor said the federal government does not need to dialogue with the militants, describing them as “criminals who should be dealt with”.

“Militants should be singled out as criminals and should be dealt with as criminals. The government needs not dialogue with them because they are determined to wreck this country. The FG should take necessary steps against these people if they want to sustain the oil business in Nigeria. Of course, we don’t totally rule out dialogue here but not with militants. The government can dialogue with the peaceful people of the region,” he said.

Meanwhile, the industry was thrown into pandemonium last week by report from Shell’s global CEO, Ben Van Beurden, that the company would be selling off its onshore assets in the North Sea.

On Monday, June 13, Beurden, laid out the company’s strategic plan for the rest of the decade, telling shareholders the group plans to vacate between five and fifteen “mature oil regions”.

Shell said it is preparing to retreat from high-cost oil operations in the North Sea after 45 years as it attunes its global operations to the new reality of low oil prices.

The company has already cut hundreds of jobs from its UK workforce. It is the clearest sign yet that Britain’s biggest company could turn its back on the “super mature” North Sea. Shell told investors it’s planned $30bn sales drive was to tackle its debt burden and will focus on mature assets in established oil regions.

According to analysts, Shell’s international assets likely to be put on the block include Shell’s interests in its loss-making Canadian tar sands, and onshore oil assets in Nigeria.
Reacting to the news of whether or not there was any truth in analysts claim that Shell companies in Nigeria would be among those affected by the Beurden revelation, Okubor said he was sure Shell is not exiting the country.

“Our presence in Nigeria is substantial. Yes, we have problems with the militants and low oil price yet, we have other companies offshore, we have the deep waters, shallow waters. Despite our challenges, we still produce. So, I’m pretty sure exiting Nigeria is not on the cards for Shell,” he said.

Speaking on Shell’s contribution to developing human capital in the country, Okunbor said it spent some $0.9 billion on local contracting and procurement.

“Ownership of key assets such as rigs, helicopters and marine vessels was a key focus of these efforts to support Nigerian and community contractors,” he added.

Politics › Nnamdi Kanu's Lawyer Threatens To Pull Out Of Case.. by BeeBeeOoh(op): 12:35pm On Jun 20, 2016
Chuks Muoma (SAN), lead counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has threatened to withdraw from his trial.

Muoma declared before James Tsoho, justice of the federal high court in Abuja, on Monday, that his appearance for Kanu would be conditional following the “extraction” of one his clients – a defendant in the case – by another lawyer.

Benjamin Madubugwu, second defendant, who is standing trial with Kanu, announced to the court that he no longer wanted Muoma to represent him.

Muoma described the sudden change of counsel as an affront to him, declaring “my appearance in this case will be conditional”‎.

However, Amobi Nzelu, the new counsel to the second defendant, ‎ appealed to the senior lawyer for understanding, saying that he had not intention to snatch his client.

‎He added that it was the right of an individual to choose his own counsel.

But the trial could not commence owing to a motion filed by ‎ Kanu’s lawyer who asked the court for an adjournment to enable Madubugwu’s lawyer and the prosecution to study and to respond to the application.

‎With no objection from the prosecution, the judge adjourned the case to September 26 for hearing of the motion and for trial.

Crime › Death In Imushin: Niger Delta Militants Want To Invade Ogun- CP by BeeBeeOoh(op): 6:22am On Jun 20, 2016
By Daud Olatunji

ABEOKUTA—Following the killing of no fewer than 15 persons in Ogun State allegedly by suspected militants from the Niger Delta region, the State Commissioner of Police, Abdulmajid Ali, yesterday confirmed that the militants are desperately looking for a safe haven in the state.

The police chief, who spoke with newsmen in Abeokuta on phone said militants are apparently finding it difficult to operate in the Niger Delta region following increased military deployment to check their nefarious activities.

Ali, who spoke against the backdrop of Friday’s invasion of Imushin community in Ogijo area of the state by suspected militants, warned that the development must not be treated with levity. Over 100 militants, who stormed the community on Friday night, reportedly killed 15 people during a shooting spree that also left several persons injured and property destroyed.

The commissioner, however, insisted that only three persons were killed when rampaging militants invaded Imushin community on Friday. He said the heavy deployment of military in the region has promoted the militants to be breaking new grounds in order to continue to perpetrate oil theft, pipeline vandalism and illegal bunkering.

He said the riverine areas of the Gateway State have thus become attractive to the militants, who carry out attacks from the creeks and rush back. Ali pointed out that the same militants had been behind the recent spate of pipeline vandalism and economic sabotage in the Arepo axis along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The commissioner said he had already reported the emerging security threat to the ‘highest authorities.’

“It’s not true that 15 people were killed there. The DPO Ogijo was on ground; he reported that only three people were killed and their bodies have been recovered from the scene,” Ali said.

He argued that if adequate measures were not taken, the militant activities may snowball into insurgency. He added: “The militants are finding it difficult in Niger Delta and Ikorodu area of Lagos State. They are now moving to our side in Ogun. They are the ones involved in kidnapping and sorts of crime.”

“These boys are becoming lawless. It is the same group that killed. NNPC officials, SSS and Navy officers in Arepo. They are responsible for lots of criminal activities in the area.  Honestly, they should be treated like Boko Haram.”
