Politics › Buhari Orders Release Of 10,000 Tons Of Grains by BeeBeeOoh(op): 9:01pm On Apr 24, 2016 |
*Pays outstanding N600 billion owed to fuel marketers in subsidy payments By Levinus Nwabughiogu ABUJA – As a way of cushioning the effect of poverty and hunger in the land, President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday directed the Minister of Agriculture, Chief Audu Ogbeh to release 10,000 tons of grains from the national strategic grains reserves for national distribution.
The directive was also a counter measure to the current astronomic prices of goods and seeming exploitation within the market system. The president also directed the agriculture minister “to ensure that all the able-bodied men and women in IDP camps be assisted to return to farming immediately.”
President Buhari’s directive followed a submission by a faction of the opposition Conference of Nigerian Political Parties,CNPP, that Nigerians under the president’s watch were facing unprecedented hardship. President’s charge was contained in a statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the president on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu.
Shehu in the statement also stated that the president upon assumption of office paid off accumulated subsidy debts of N600 billion owed to marketers. This was as he stated that there were social programmes captured in the 2016 budgets to Bette the lot of Nigerians. He refuted claims that the presidency would allow Nigerians to suffer.
The statement read in part:
“The Presidency however asserts that the devastation of the economy was caused by the Boko Haram insurgency, corruption and the lack of planning by the past administrations and one that should not be blamed on the Change Agenda of the Muhammadu Buhari administration.
“The Presidency firmly rejects the insinuations that poverty and lack are products of the Change mantra. “This should be dismissed as an erroneous and misplaced opposition criticism.
The President understands the pain and the cries of the citizens of this country and he is spending sleepless nights over how he can make life better for everyone. “Contrary to assertions by a faction of the opposition Conference of Nigerian Political Parties,CNPP, the President’s energy and focus are on changing the life of Nigerians, with a view to making it better than he met it.
“Change is a process. Change does not happen overnight. Change can be inconvenient. Change sometimes comes with pain. Over the past year, the government has been working night and day to deliver on its promise of change to Nigerians, and the painful process is still ongoing.
“This is work in progress. As life gradually returns to normal in much of the country and the northeast in particular, agriculture will resume and traders from neighbouring African countries will once again feel safe to do business with us–yet another boost for our economy.
“But it Is only when we appreciate where we are coming that we will grasp the full meaning and essence of what the ongoing journey entails. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/04/hunger-buhari-orders-release-10000-tons-grains/ |
Politics › We Did Not Divert Bailout Funds- Gov. Aregbesola by BeeBeeOoh(op): 8:51pm On Apr 24, 2016 |
The Osun Government has denied allegations of diversion of N34.99 billion bailout fund it received from the Federal Government to pay workers’ salaries.
The information is contained in a statement issued by Mr Semiu Okanlawon, the Media aide to Gov. Rauf Aregbesola, in Osogbo on Sunday. The government said the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) did not indict it over the disbursement of the fund.
It said the fact that ICPC was investigating claims that workers in the state received their last salaries in July 2015 was enough for those monitoring developments in the state to conclude that the allegation could not have been true.
“This is because after the payment of seven months backlog of salaries last year, the government had proceeded to pay salaries on the agreed terms with workers.
“And this is why Osun has been able to pay its workers till January this year. “There is no case of diversion of bailout loan as far as Osun is concerned.
”The state was able to accommodate pensioners in the bailout loans application when in actual fact pensioners were not part of the bailout scheme.
” But this was agreed upon by both government and workers.
“The bailout was to take care of salaries backlog up till June last year. The report that Osun paid salaries last in July 2015 is laughable.
“If anything, the Osun government had demonstrated enough transparency by ensuring that the bailout loan was disbursed with adequate supervision of a committee of labour and government.
“We have insisted that Gov. Aregbesola cannot be found wanting because whether in bailout funds or other funds of Osun he has been very creative in the management of the scarce resources to lift the state beyond the limit of the available resources. Crime › Police Intercepts 3,600 Litres Of Petrol In Polythene Bag.. by BeeBeeOoh(op): 9:59am On Apr 24, 2016 |
By Samson Folarin The Lagos State Police Command has recovered 3, 600 litres of fuel from suspected pipeline vandals in the Aquatira area, 1st Avenue by 12 Road, in the FESTAC area of the state.
SUNDAY PUNCH gathered that the suspects, however, fled the scene on a canoe following the arrival of the police.
A police source said the vandals always pumped fuel in the area at night.
He said the fuel was always stored in polythene bags, adding that each bag could take as much as 150 litres of fuel.
The source said the hoodlums were initially loading the fuel in a tanker, but later changed their technique so as to evade the vigilance of the police.
“They are pipeline vandals. There is a pipe that passed through a canal at FESTAC, buried deep in the waters. The vandals go down inside the canal, loosen the pipe, connect a hose to it and pump the fuel into a tanker. But we have been monitoring them and we always arrest the tankers.
“Because we have become used to their system, they devised another method. They get big polythene bags that can take as much as 150 litres of fuel. They load the bags with 100 litres of fuel so that they will not burst. After loading them with fuel, they put them into sacks and tie the sacks together. They put the sacks on the canal, but they are three-quarter buried inside the water and will not be visible to the eye,” he said.
Speaking further, the source stated, “When their boat comes, they hook the sacks and take them to wherever they need them. But on the day of the incident, we intercepted them and immediately they saw us in our vehicle, they fled in their boat. We called the Marine Police to help us bring out the fuel.”
He said the fuel would be kept as exhibits or after obtaining a court order, it would be auctioned.
When contacted about the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, Dolapo Badmos, said she would respond later to the issue, but she had not done so as of the time of filing this report. http://www.punchng.com/police-intercept-3600-litres-of-petrol-in-polythene-bags/

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has taken early lead in the council election results so far released in some units and wards in Ondo state The All Progressive Congress, APC, failed to stop the election as the Federal High Court sitting in Akure struck out cases, instituted by the APC, for lack of jurisdiction and abuse of court process. In her ruling, Justice, Folashade Olubanjo said the Federal High Court does not have jurisdiction of cases involving the conduct of local government election under the purview of state governments and its relevant agencies. Olabanjo added that it would amount to judicial pettiness to proceed with the suit when issues on the dissolution of the former councils was still pending before the Supreme Court. According to the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission, 14 political parties participated in the local government elections. The chairman of the commission, Olugbenga Ige, noted that the number was initially 15, but PPA later announced its withdrawal, citing its inability to field candidates for the election. Politics › Army Averts Another Suicide Attack In Borno.. by BeeBeeOoh(op): 4:57pm On Apr 23, 2016 |
The Nigerian Army on Saturday prevented another suicide bomb attack on Ummarari in Borno after intercepting a suspected bomber on his way to the community.
This is contained in a statement signed by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman, in Maiduguri. “Troops of 7 Division Garrison, Forward Operation Base (FOB), on Saturday averted yet another suicide bombing catastrophe on Ummarari community by suspected Boko Haram terrorist at about 7 a.m.
“The suicide bomber was intercepted by the vigilant troops and the Civilian JTF while attempting to enter the village to detonate his dangerous cargo on innocent persons in the community,” the statement said. It said that the suspect was forced to detonate his explosives after he was halted by security agents and members of the Civilian JTF.
“The suicide bomber detonated the strapped Improvised Explosive Device (IED) vest on his body, thus killing himself instantly when he was forced to halt, based on suspicion that he was carrying suicide bombing material. “Thankfully, there was no any other casualty other than the suspected suicide bomber.
“Troops and the Civilian JTF at the village, are now combing the surrounding area to forestall further attacks and clear the environment of likely remnants of Boko Haram terrorists hibernating,” it said. Gina was shot 5 times and left to die in Aluu (University of Portharcourt) Rivers State allegedly by police men in the guise of accidental discharge during the school's violent protest earlier this month. She was the only child of her parents. Her dad is late also.
She was buried yesterday and her cousin shared pics from the burial along with a heartbreaking note from her wounded and broken mother.
"Yesterday my beautiful daughter was put to rest.. The heaviness in my heart can't be eased, knowing that no one is taking responsibility of your death. The police killed you and never showed remorse for your death. Nigeria is as messed up as its leaders. May you rest in peace my angel. Your death has paint everything in my life into a different shades of remorse, I keep regretting sending you there, I feel guilty Gina..The sorrow I feel to lose you Gina is the price I have paid to have you in my life, your memories is all I have, which helped me survived the storms and struggles of our daily lives we shared together. I see it from henceforth as my job to mourn you until the day I die. I can't loose you, you are part of reason for everything in my life. Pls God how can I go through? Till we meet again. RIP Gina my doctor as I always called you. I will always love you my daughter". - See more at: http://www.lailasblog.com/2016/04/uniport-student-allegedly-shot-to-death.html?m=1#sthash.NolXb7G4.dpuf
