Politics › I Was Framed By The Military - General Shuwa Killer by BeeBeeOoh(op): 1:27pm On May 03, 2016 |
By Abdulsalam Muhammad KANO – The 35 years old suspected mastermind of General Mamam Shuwa death, Mohammed Sani Nafiu has declared that he was framed by the military. Nafiu who was paraded by military in Kano Tuesday told newsmen that he knows nothing about the planning and assassination of the civil war hero.
Looking calm and steady, the high profile suspect who spoke in Hausa without mincing words said “I don’t know anything about General Shuwa’s death” Speaking further, Nafiu said “I was arrested from my home to the detention centre, and they are trying to frame me. I must make myself clear, I have no hand in General Shuwa’s death”.
The Boko Haram kingpin was arrested by the military at Hotoro General area of Kano municipal and a GSM and a total sum of three hundred naira was recovered from him. However, a senior military officer told Journalists shortly after a brief encounter with the suspects to disregard his stand.
The senior who do not want his name in print said that ” the suspects is a pathological liar, what we know of him was different from the picture he tried to paint before the world” According to him “immediately after General Shuwa was martyr, this suspect relocated from his country home and his arrest was a product of sustained intelligence operation”. : http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/05/framed-military-general-shuwas-alleged-killer/ https://d19lga30codh7.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/image-e1462278547986.jpeg The alleged killer |
Politics › Procurement Is The Nigeria's Weakest Link- Kachikwu by BeeBeeOoh(op): 1:13pm On May 03, 2016 |
By Clara Nwachukwu and Sebastine Obasi, Houston, Texas The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, and the Group Managing Director, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, has identified procurement as the weakest link in the Nigerian oil and gas industry value chain. Kachikwu, said this at the opening of the 2016 edition of the Offshore Technology Conference, OTC, which kicked off Monday, at the Reliant Park in Houston, Texas, United States of America. Represented by Mr. Saidu Mohammed, Group Executive Director, GED, Gas and Power, NNPC, Kachikwu said that there is a need for Nigeria to domesticate its oil and gas industry so as to achieve optimum benefits.
“Under PETAN, a lot is going on and it is always towards the programme we have mapped for ourselves. Nigeria has to domesticate what we do in the oil and gas industry, starting with engineering, procurement and construction.
“We have gotten the first part of it, as substantial part of the engineering today is being done in the country. Substantial part of construction cannot be done elsewhere except in Nigeria. But procurement has been a headache,” he said. While acknowledging the effects of the dwindling oil price, the Minister reiterated the need to look inwards and reduce costs, so as to stay afloat.
“With the capacity building in Nigerian entrepreneurship going on today, with the sub-letting of so many of the equipment we need in the oil and gas industry, of course, Nigeria is going in the right path. Agreed that so many things are happening in the oil and gas industry, particularly with dwindling oil prices; nevertheless, what does it call for?
“It calls for us to look inwards so as to optimise costs, reduce the cost of production so as to remain afloat. However, we cannot reduce the cost of production if we don’t have Nigerian expertise in the development of procurement materials. That is really why we need to commend PETAN members in that regard.
“You optimise your cost when you are in difficulties. At the end of the day, there is a bottom line. What do you use, what are the inputs in terms of production? You look at the inputs and then apart from the human beings, you need machinery. How can you lower the cost of those inputs – the machinery, the chemicals that you use day and night?
“How do you reduce the cost? You can only reduce the cost when you produce them locally. That is the direction we are going now. That is why we appreciate PETAN and its members. We need to be cohesive. We need to be focussed. We need to be determined to make sure that Nigerian oil and gas industry is completely managed by Nigerians,” he said.
The minister was conducted round the Nigerian Pavillion by the Chairman, Petroleum Technology Association of Nigeria, PETAN, Mr. Bank-Anthony Okoroafor, who explained to him some of the achievements of his members since the localization of some services and inputs in the nation’s petroleum industry. While commending the Federal Government’s effort in promoting local content development with the signing of the Nigerian Content Act, Okoroafor pleaded for more support for Nigerian companies especially during this period of downturn so as not to lay off more workers than have been laid off already.
But The Minister, who neither denied nor acknowledged the issue of staff rationalisation in the industry, argued that the main focus is to build capacity in the industry. “We are not talking about laying off staff. We are talking about optimising what we have so as get the best out of it. Contrary to what people think, we are building capacity and expanding the human resources in the oil and gas industry,” he added. : http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/05/procurement-is-nigerias-weakest-link-kachikwu/ https://static.pulse.ng/img/incoming/origs4044040/5785565355-w644-h429/New-NNPC-GMD-Emmanuel-Ibe-Kachikwu.jpg |

Politics › Idoma Group Lambasts Northern Governors For Defending Fulani Herdsmen by BeeBeeOoh(op): 4:14am On May 03, 2016 |
By Peter Duru MAKURDI—A pan-Idoma group, the Opiatoha K’Idoma has faulted the position of the Northern governors on the activities of Fulani herdsmen in parts of the country, saying that the governors tended to exonerate the herdsmen from the recent massacre of hundreds of persons in Agatu local government area of Benue State.
The group cautioned that statements on a sensitive issue like the mindless killing of innocent Nigerians by the herdsmen should be handled with utmost care not to aggravate the already tense situation in parts of the country. Speaking to Vanguard in Makurdi, the Secretary General of the group, Chief Adoka Adaji maintained that the herdsmen, who masterminded the mass killings were criminals and should be treated as such.
According to him, ”anyone or group of persons who engage in the wanton destruction of lives and properties of innocent and defenceless Nigerians like the Fulani herdsmen are at present perpetrating across the country, ought to be treated as criminals. “You don’t visit the home of another and unleash mayhem on the people.
“Fulani herdsmen cannot be defended or exonerated in this matter. Anybody exonerating them of the mass killings that we are all witnessing in parts of the country is not helping the situation.”
“This not the time to apportion blames even though the herdsmen are also trying to put up a defense, we must all, as a matter of priority, seek for ways of bring the crisis to an end before it snowballs into something else.”
“Though the Benue state Acting Governor, Benson Abounu has come out to debunk claims that the Northern Governors in their last meeting tried to shield the herdsmen from blame we urge the federal government to take decisive steps to end these killings”. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/05/idoma-group-faults-northern-govs-defending-herdsmen/

Politics › Probe: Jonathan's Administration Not Under Trial- Prof. Alkali by BeeBeeOoh(op): 10:21am On May 02, 2016 |
By Ben Agande Abuja – The former Special Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on Political Affairs, Professor Rufai Ahmed Alkali has urged Nigerians to allow the anti corruption agencies carry out their assignment, noting that they have capable men and women to embark on their duties professionally.
In a statement in Abuja sunday, Professor Alkali said some unnamed persons have been sponsoring negative write ups in the media to discredit the work of the anti corruption agencies especially as it relates to the investigations into the past administration of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the campaign funds of the Jonathan/Sambo 2015 Presidential Campaign Organization (PCO). The former Political adviser to President Jonathan noted that contrary to the insinuations in certain circles that the Jonathan administration was under trial, it is the ruling elites that are under trial for their failure.
“Let me state here that contrary to popular notions, it is not PDP leaders that are on trial. It is not even the former PDP Government alone that is on trial. It is the ruling elite in the country that is on trial over our individual and collective failures. And each and every one of us will, at some stage in life, face and hopefully past the integrity test” he said.
He noted: ” I have resisted the urge and temptations to join issues with the sponsors and writers of these stories, hoping that in good time, they will know the truth. However, it has become imperative at this stage, to urge writers of those stories to allow the security agencies, who are made up of highly competent and well trained professionals, to handle the investigations diligently.
“My resolve to keep silent since these issues were first reported in the papers was mainly because of my fair understanding and respect of the system having served my country in various capacities over the years” he said.
Professor Alkali noted that “the issues under investigation are within the powers of the relevant agencies charged with the constitutional responsibility to do so and I believe that the agencies have been doing their work without any interference by anyone. I therefore have absolute confidence in the ability and capacities of the men and women who are saddled with this rather difficult task of cleansing the sytem to do their work in line with their mandate.
“In my view it is time we move away from the dramatisation of serious issues and focus our attention and energy towards consolidating on the gains of democracy in our country” he concluded. Politics › We Are Working Hard To Give Nigerian Festivals Prominence- Lai Mohammed by BeeBeeOoh(op): 10:09am On May 02, 2016 |
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has restated Federal Government’s commitment to supporting and elevating the nation’s numerous festivals to enable them to contribute their quota to national development, while also preserving Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage. The Minister said this on Saturday in Mangu, Plateau State, when he attended the Puus Kaat Festival, an annual gathering of sons and daughters of Mangu to showcase their rich cultural heritage.
“The reason we are working hard to give national and international prominence to our festivals and also support our creative artists is because of their potentials to contribute to the growth of our GDP, provide jobs as well as foster peace and unity.
”The Arts and Culture, as well as Tourism sectors are the only ones that are capable of providing opportunities, including jobs, to those who ordinarily would not have been employable, perhaps because of their lack of education. That is why we say the sectors are pro-poor, pro-the-underprivileged and pro-rural. These are the only sectors that import the market to the products,” he said.
Alhaji Mohammed said the Puus Kaat Festival, which came a day after the conclusion of the National Summit on Culture and Tourism organised by his ministry, is set to benefit from the far-reaching resolutions made at the summit that included enlisting of festivals into a national calendar, as well as training of festival managers and creative artists.
“It is significant that this festival is coming just one day after we concluded a well-attended National Summit on Culture and Tourism in Abuja. Part of the decisions taken at that summit is to ensure that every local government in Nigeria celebrates at least one festival a year, in our efforts to build a national calendar of festivals that will attract people from within and outside Nigeria, just like we have at the Rio Carnival in Brazil and in Edinburgh, Scotland, just to mention a few.
“Also, it was decided at the National Summit that we must build the capacity of the managers of our various festivals through training and re-training by resource persons. I want to assure you that the organizers of Puus Kaat Festival will be among those to benefit from this training. We will also build the capacity of creative artists and adequately equip our various arts and crafts centres across the nation to enable them function more effectively. We will then follow up by creating local and international markets for the products,” he said.
It was the second time within a month that the Minister was witnessing a festival in Plateau state, after also attending the Nzem Berom Festival in Jos, on April 15th 2016. The main attractions of the Puus Kaat Festival are traditional dance parade, display of various arts and crafts of the Mangus people as well as showcasing of the Mangu people’s prowess in hunting and farming. Politics › FG Condemns Quit Calls For Herdsmen From The South East- Vanguard News by BeeBeeOoh(op): 7:17am On May 02, 2016 |
Uburu – The Federal Government has condemned calls by some individuals and groups in the south-east geo political zone for herdsmen to leave the region. Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, Minister of Science and Technology, made the condemnation on Sunday at Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi.
He was addressing newsmen on the outcome of the All Progressives Congress (APC) South-East stakeholders meeting. According to him, the call is uncalled for, as President Muhammadu Buhari has directed relevant agencies to take appropriate actions in halting the killings by suspected herdsmen.
“This situation is not pleasing to anybody but the Federal Government is desirous to achieve a peaceful, strong and united nation.
“The government appeals to south-easterners especially youths, not to take laws into their hands as a result of the development. “The people should exercise patience, as the president has categorically condemned the herdsmen’s actions and directed that no effort should be spared in checking the situation.
“The Ibos are known globally to be peace loving and abhorrers of violence, as I enjoin them to maintain such virtue,” he said. The minister said that the meeting involved elected APC leaders, national leaders, members of the National Working Committee (NWC) and other stakeholders from the zone.
“We discussed ways of consolidating on the party’s achievements and making it stronger because we want to start winning elections in the zone.
“We also discussed the disputed issue of state chairmanship of the party, as it will be resolved very soon,” he said. Onu also urged Nigerians to be patient with the president on the issue of 2016 budget assent, noting that he wanted to get things right.
“The president made promises to the nation; to ensure adequate security for the citizens, rapidly develop the economy, check unemployment, ensure the observance of the rule of law, among others. “The budget estimate reflected all these promises but what was returned to the president did not conform with his intentions.
“He then demonstrated his resolve to ensure that things are done correctly, as continuing with the old ways of doing things has visible and dire effects,” he said. Read more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/05/fg-condemns-quit-calls-for-herdsmen-from-south-east/ Lalasticlala |
Politics › How I Became Running Mate To Buhari- VP Osinbajo by BeeBeeOoh(op): 7:08am On May 02, 2016 |
By Levinus Nwabughiogu ABUJA—Three weeks to first anniversary of the present government, the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, has revealed that how be became the running mate to President Mohammadu Buhari, saying his disposition to fight corruption in Nigeria was the motivating factor. Osinbajo spoke at a non-denominational conference organized by the Covenant Christian Centre in Abuja on Saturday. He recalled that he had co-founded a professional a group in 1995 that upheld integrity as a hallmark to fighting corruption and upholding good governance.
He also recalled that he was 24 years when his boss became the Military Head of State, stressing that providence brought them together. He said: “Permit me to begin (the speech) with a story about myself. All my adult life, I have always believed that our country was performing far below its potentialities, in practically every aspect of life.
“In governance, corruption was always so outrageous that it made the majority poor and development almost impossible. Law and order was always a problem, usually no consequence for wrong-doing. ‘’Doing business and even our daily existence have always been difficult, no power, no fuel.
Getting anything done in government establishments, a nightmare of delay and extortion. “So as a conscious decision, I joined various pressure groups. From human rights groups to good governance advocacy groups. In 1995, I co- founded an organization called Integrity, an anti-corruption organization. I joined various think tanks and professional groups, including the Concerned Professionals.”
The Vice President then recalled a situation of harassment and intimidation his group suffered under the Abacha regime. “Under the Abacha regime we Concerned Professionals, one day gathered at Yaba Bus-stop and some were thoroughly beaten by Police and the Army.
From that day on, people disappeared and did not show up again. “I served as a two-term Attorney- General in Lagos State and pushed reforms in governance and the justice sector, I believed and continued to believe that the Nigerian people deserve better lives.”
“In December 2014, the unexpected happened; I was nominated as Vice Presidential candidate to then General Muhammadu Buhari.” He then recalled that he was still young, 27years old when Buhari became head of State “after a corrupt and somewhat disappointing civilian regime.”
The Vice President said: “As a young university lecturer, then I was impressed by his, President Buhari’s single-minded fight against corruption and indiscipline.
There was a serious war against indiscipline. For the first time, government held corrupt officers accountable. “30 years later, providence brought us together. A retired general now and a Professor of Law.” Osinbajo said the President and himself knew and agreed on what had to happen to bring change to the nation.
“We both believed that our country needed to change. We argued about how and what needed to be done. We reached consensus on many of the major issues.
‘’Certainly our country need a different set of values; a new way of doing business; an economy that is able to give opportunity to young people to work in their chosen professions and to build strong and profitable businesses.
We knew that we had to provide social protection for the poorest and the most vulnerable. “We recognised that innovation and change will be key, and that we must implement and not just talk about diversification of our economy.
So we led our party’s campaign on that single, simple, but profound word, CHANGE! “Nearly a year on- there are many problems and many have asked where is the change? Is this the change we voted for? Even some fifth columnists in our midst have suggested bring back corruption! “But let me just say here for the records that the government of Muhammadu Buhari is completely and irrevocably committed to change.
“We believe that though it may not be easy, though the early signs may be confusing and sometimes discouraging, there has never been a better opportunity than now to turn the country in the direction of success. “ Today we have the best opportunity in decades for profound change. It is an opportunity in a generation.
A revolution whose time has come! Everything around us tells us that the moment is now! Can this change happen, yes indeed, it can! ‘’What do you have in your hands to make it happen? We have a country that is tired of corruption, tired of leadership without values, tired of an economy that is neither designed to accommodate enterprise, nor to create opportunity and wealth for the majority.
“But we have a leadership and we have a leader that is prepared to challenge the rotten status quo, one who has said that he is prepared to kill corruption rather than let it kill us,” he said. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/05/became-running-mate-buhari-osinbajo/
