A total of about 360 undergraduate students of Bayero University, Kano were given skills acquisition training on various trades and entrepreneurship in a special project sponsored by Fidelity Bank, as part of its corporate responsibility programme.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony, on Saturday, 24 August, 2019 at the Students Affairs Hall, the Deputy Managing Director of Fidelity Bank, Alhaji Muhammad Balarabe, disclosed that the beneficiaries were drawn from departments by a random selection irrespective of their geographical, ethnic or religious inclinations.

He revealed that the Bank had spent well over N5 million on the program, which included training in tailoring, knitting, computer, cloth embellishment, cocktail, wig making, designing, make-over and shoe making, among others.



Alhaji Balarabe said the desire was to acquaint the students with entrepreneurship skills, so that they could be self-reliant upon graduation and, therefore, become business oriented as against the norms of waiting for white collar jobs.

He said in addition to giving them the skill acquision training, the bank had equally provided start-off kits to about 200 trainees with a view to starting their business in earnest, pointing out that the programme, which was in collaboration with Gazelle Academy Vocational Centre, would be a continuous one.

Speaking during the ceremony, the Vice Chancellor of Bayero University, Professor Muhammad Yahuza Bello, who was represented by the Director of Public Affairs, Malam Ahmad Shehu, commended the bank for the gesture and urged other corporate organizations to emulate it.

He charged the beneficiaries to make proper utilization of the skills they acquired, which he said were aimed at empowering them to be self-reliant, so that they could be successful entrepreneurs. The Dean of the Students Affairs Division, Dr. Shamsuddeen Umar, in his remarks advised the young students to imbibe the culture of being self-reliant,

saying that entrepreneurship was more rewarding than waiting for government jobs, which nowadays were not forth-coming. Many of the beneficiaries expressed their gratitude to the bank for the opportunity to widen their horizons to venture into entrepreneurship and

promised to put into practical use the skills they acquired for national growth and development. Explaining further on the project, the Head of the Corporate Communication, Mr. Charles Aigbe said,

Fidelity with over 4 million customers across the country decided to embark on this social responsibility as a way of giving back to the society which aimed at empowering the youths from the tertiary institutions so as to set up their businesses.

The Bank has similar project at University of Nigeria, NSUKKA (UNN), Waziri Umar Federal Polytechnic, Kebbi State, Federal Polytechnic Anambra and River State University of Science and Technology among others.

The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, has directed the Federal Scholarship Board to process the payment of scholarship stipends to Nigerian students studying in Russia.

Mr Adamu gave the directive when the Nigerian Ambassador to Russia and Belarus, Steve Ugba, paid him a working visit in his office in Abuja.

According to a statement from the education ministry on Thursday, Mr Adamu said the government would prioritise the welfare of the students in the diaspora.

Mr Ugba said the Nigerian embassy in Russia has contributed immensely to the wellbeing of the students in Russia.


Premium Times reported that the federal government owes over 12 months’ allowances to Nigerian students on a federal government scholarship.

The students were sent to study abroad under the Bilateral Education Agreement of the Federal Scholarship Board (FSB) programme, a parastatal of the federal ministry of education.




The scholarship is awarded to different cadres of students (undergraduate and postgraduate) who are sent to countries with which Nigeria has such bilateral agreement.

Under the bilateral agreement, the host countries take care of the students’ tuition and accommodation, while the government of the mother country (in this case Nigeria) takes full charge of the students living allowances, which is to be paid monthly.


Countries involved in such educational understanding with Nigeria include Russia, Morocco, Algeria, Serbia, Hungary, Egypt, Tunisia, Turkey, Cuba, Romania, Ukraine, Japan, Macedonia; Mexico, and South Korea.

Also in a separate statement, the Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, said the Nigerian government would continue to ensure safe learning environments for all students in the country.

He said the government would no longer tolerate bullying in schools.

*DAILY DIGEST: Two boys claim kidnapping kept them from school*

A look at CCTV footage exposed their plan

Lucknow: Two boys, aged 11 and 13, in the capital of the state Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow, were caught playing hooky from school. Afraid of the punishment that was sure to come once they were caught, they made up a story – they cried kidnapping.

The boys, who live in Lucknow's Saadatganj locality, left for school on Monday and returned home later.

They told their parents that they were on their way to school at 7.30am when a man in a car called them.

"The man pulled us inside the car which had five other men who blindfolded us. Near Thakurganj, we managed to break the glass of the car with a bottle and shouted for help. Since the car had slowed down due to traffic, we managed to escape," they said.

The parents panicked and called the police, who in turn began to mobilise teams to track down the abductors.

Officer of Saadatganj Mahesh Pal Singh said: "The truth came out when we scanned the CCTV footage of the area. We did not see the boys nor the car. When interrogated further, the boys confessed that they had cooked up the story because they had not done their homework and were also late for school."

The station house officer (SHO) said that the boys had been counselled not to indulge in such acts in the future.READ MORE>>>

*DIGEST: Five students to represent Nigeria at Global Robotics Olympics*

Five Nigerian students, drawn from secondary schools across the country, have been selected to represent Nigeria at the next First Global Robotics Olympics (GRO) in Dubai in October.

Mrs. Remi Willoughby, Chief Executive Officer, Roboglobal Educational Consulting, made this known in a statement in Lagos on Monday. Willoughby, also National Coordinator of the programme, said that the students were selected during a try-out session with over 50 secondary schools and over 200 students.

The students are: Kosi Ugoji, Isaac Ibidun, Gbemileke Ogunrayewa, Sonia Bendrewere and Toluwaniyin Ojo-Osagie Willoughby said that in Africa, children that could think and collectively find solutions to their problems were needed.

Emir Sunusi | BUK has the Potential to Lead African Varsities

Bayero University, Kano will soon assume leadership position in teaching and research among universities in the Continent of Africa, Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has disclosed. He said the University's exploits in academics in recent times have put it in a pole positions among both the first generation Universities and its peers, adding that 'I am optimistic that in no distant future, Bayero University will definitely become a leading citadel of learning in the continent. The emir spoke on Wednesday 3 July, 2019 when he received the leadership of BUK's African Centre of Excellence for Population Health and Policy (ACEPHAP) led by its Director, Professor Hadiza Galadanci and a collaborating team from Sheffield University, United Kingdom, and Babcock University, Ilisha on a courtesy call in his Palace.Malam Muhammadu Sanusi II commended the BUK's management for raising the academic standard of the University through teaching, cutting edge research and postgraduate training, adding that the successes recorded by BUK academically were the reason why universities in the world are collaborating with it. 'It goes to show that BUK's academic exploits are being recognized and appreciated,' the Emir remarked. The emir added that he was not surprised by the World Bank grant won by BUK's Centre for Population Health and Policy which elevated its status to Africa Centre of Excellence to spearhead postgraduate training to acquire knowledge, skills and competence towards achieving health-related SDGs as well as to conduct cutting edge research to strengthen capacity and capability and to also translate such research findings to policy and practice. He said apart from conducting postgraduate training and research to address the related challenges, it is paramount that 'we address the root cause of these challenges, which he thinks is lack of girl-child education.' Educating a girl￾child, he mentioned would go a long way in improving maternal child health, nutrition, hygiene and economic empowerment of the womenfolk.
