Romance / 10 Weird Sexual Traditions Around The World by Bekwarra(m): 12:49pm On Sep 04, 2019
Sex is one of the staples of human existence. Although the importance attached to it varies from one place to another, its centrality to human existence cannot however be overemphasized.
Sex basically serves two functions which are for procreation and for gratification.

Here we take a look at ten weird sexual traditions from around the world. Variety didn’t they say is the spice of life? A norm in a place can be an abomination in your own society.
10. Semen Drinking

This is a tradition among the Sambians, a semen-drinking tribe in Papua New Guinea.
To become a man among this primitive tribe, young boys are removed from the presence of all females at the age of seven and made to live with other males for ten years. During these ten years, the skin is pierced to remove any contamination brought upon by women. For the same reason, they also regularly incur nose-bleeding and vomiting caused by consuming large amounts of sugarcane.
To top it off, they are required to ingest the semen of their elders, which is believed to sustain growth and strength. When they are finally introduced back into the tribe, they continue to engage in nose-bleeding at the same time as their wives’ menstrual cycles.

9. Wife Stealing

In the Wodaabe tribe of Niger in West Africa, men are known to steal each other’s wives. The Wodaabe’s first marriage is arranged by their parents in infancy and must be between cousins of the same lineage. However, at the yearly Gerewol Festival, Wodaabe men wear elaborate makeup and costumes and dance to impress the women – and of course hopefully steal a new wife. If the new couple is able to steal or sneak away undetected (especially from a current husband who may not want to part with his wife), then they become socially recognized. These subsequent marriages are called love marriages.

8. Wife Sharing

This is a very common practice among the Himalayans in Nepal. The Himalayans practice what is referred to in Psychology as ‘fraternal polyandry’ in which a group of brothers share a wife.

There is little land available for farming and agriculture due to the topography, and families with more than one son would be faced with dividing up their land were each son to start his own family. The solution? Find one wife for all of their sons so that they can live together as one family and keep their family plot intact.

7. Older Women Teaching Young Boys Sex

In Mangaia , an island in the South Pacific, people are encouraged to have many sexual partners before they marry and boys undergo what is known as a superincision – that’s cutting the foreskin — at the age of 13.

Even more weird is that older women are told to have sex with young boys so they can learn about sex and how to properly please their partner.

Will you call those women cougars?

6. Sex From Age Six

This can be found among the Trobrianders in Papua, New Guinea. Sounding familiar already? Well these islanders from a remote tribe in Papua Guinea believe girls want sex just as much as guys, and kids start having sex at a very young age — 6-8 for the girls and 10-12 for the guys — with no social stigma. There are few customs about dating to inhibit “hooking up” and, of course, revealing clothing has been taken to its limit, with girls actually going topless.
However, while everybody is having sex whenever they want, premarital meal-sharing is a big no-no. You’re not supposed to go out for dinner together until after you get married.

5 . Love Huts For Girls To Sample Different Men And Choose The Best

This is a practice among the Kreung Tribe in Cambodia. Here, the elders build a love-hut for their teenage daughters. Different boys spend the night here day after day, until she finds a suitable partner, who is then with her for life.

4. Festival Of Infidelity

During a festival known as the celebration of Pon in Indonesia, participants have to spend the night and have intercourse with someone other than their wife or husband. It is said that their wishes of good luck will only come true if they have sex with the same person at all seven celebrations throughout the year.

3. Capturing Men For Sex
In the Kiriwina islands, tribes celebrate the “Yam festival.” What sets this festival apart from the oneo you’re used to is that during the celebrations the women can capture any man they want and have sex with him. Tribal chiefs grant their permission for this weird practice, so women can enjoy sex without the fear of punishment. However, they are not allowed to capture a man from their own tribe. Usually, men do not roam alone during the Yam festival season since they are aware of the custom. If a man is not able to perform well during intercourse, the unsatisfied partner can urinate on his face.

2. Wife Swapping

Namibia’s nomadic tribes have been practicing “okujepisa omukazendu” and they are happy about it. The literal meaning of “okujepisa omukazendu” is “offering a wife to a guest,” or in even simpler terms, you can just call it “wife swapping.” Women are often asked to sleep with their husband’s friends. These tribes live in the northwestern Kunene region near the Angolan border, and far away from mainstream society. The modern lifestyle is totally an alien concept to them and they continue to obediently practice what they have learned from their ancestors. Educated individuals as well as international and local organizations have raised their voice against the custom of wife swapping. However, the practice seems destined to go on for the foreseeable future.

1. Sex With Donkeys

Boys have sex with donkeys in the northern Colombian town of Cartagena. Yes, it sounds awkward, but it is true. It is practiced as a socially approved tradition that helps young boys transition into manhood. Kids are trained by their fathers before they have sex with an unsuspecting donkey. Apparently they can get addicted to this weird and unhealthy form of sex. But the followers have a different opinion about this form of donkey love. According to the tradition, a man will possess great sexual potential to satisfy his future wife by having multiple sexual experiences with a donkey. It will make their penis bigger and also stop them from indulging in homosexual relationship, which is not accepted in the predominantly Catholic community

Music/Radio / Seven Record Labels That Revolutionized Hip-hop In Nigeria by Bekwarra(m): 11:20am On Sep 04, 2019
The Nigerian hip-hop industry is one that has over the last three decades grown to become the biggest in Africa. The music industry in Nigeria from little beginnings moved with slow but assured steps to metamorphose into the biggest music industry on the continent. It now parades superstars of international repute like Wizkid, Davido, Burna Boy, Olamide and the defunct Psquare with dozens of hit tracks and international collaborations. To cement the status of the Nigerian music industry as the leader in Africa, Nigerian artistes have dominated awards on the continent in the last two decades.
All these would not have been possible without the sacrifices and the contributions of some record labels that changed the face of the Nigerian hip-hop cum music industry. Here we take a look at the record labels that revolutionized the music industry in Nigeria

EME Records used to be one of the most powerful record labels in Nigeria back then with a handful of talented acts signed under it. Trouble started between Wizkid and EME in 2012 after they had issues with the way funds is being shared between both parties including the manager. The issue was later resolved but not too long after, trouble started again in the camp which sees Wizkid finally exiting the Label. EME Records gradually started losing their shine until the label finally folded up after the Exit of Skales.

Science/Technology / Eternal Flames: Places Around The World That Have Been Burning For Years by Bekwarra(m): 4:25pm On Sep 01, 2019
For several days now global attention has been focused on the fast burning Amazon rainforest, the largest rainforest in the world. For weeks now the Amazon has been burning at an alarming rate with large swathes of rainforest being depleted.

The importance of the Amazon to the global ecosystem as well as the economy and living in South America cannot be overemphasized. However, regardless of the magnitude and the importance, it is not the only place on earth that is burning. In fact, some have been burning for several years.

Earlier this week, we took a look at the Darvaza Gas Crater in Turkmenistan that has been burning since 1971- a whopping forty-eight years with no idea when the fire is going to stop.

Here we take a look at other locations around the world where fires have been soldering for ages. This might look like a page out of a book of fiction but it is actually real.

1. Yanar Dag
You might have heard of Azerbaijan being referred to as the land of fire, this Yanar Dag is a principal reason for that appellation.

The Yanar Dag which in Azerbaijani means “burning mountain” or “fire mountain” is located in the Absheron Peninsula on the Caspian Sea near Baku, the country’s capital. Azerbaijan is known for its large reserves of natural gas and over the centuries there have been fires burning at different areas around the country due to natural gas leaking out from crevices to the surface.

Legendary explorer Marco Polo wrote of the mysterious phenomena when he passed through the country in the 13th century. Other Silk Road merchants brought news of the flames as they would travel to other lands. It’s why the country earned itself the moniker the “land of fire.” The Yanar Dag is one of the last of those fires. Five hundred years after Marco Polo, French writer Alexandre Dumas witnessed natural flames in a mysterious fire temple.
The Yanar Dag is believed to have been burning for over 4,000 years and despite the seasonal rain, wind and snow, it has never stopped burning.

One can easily understand how these natural flames must have amazed and terrified people in history, and it doesn’t come as a surprise that the natural fires of Azerbaijan are considered to have played a crucial part in the creation of Zoroastrianism — a mystical faith, centered around ceremonial fire cults, which appeared in the region around 2,000 years ago.

The natural flames of Azerbaijan can be attributed to its enormous gas reserves. When exploitation of these reserves began, most of the natural fires burned out, due to a reduction in underground pressure. Of the natural fires that burn today in Azerbaijan, Yanar Dağ is arguably the most impressive.
A 10m long wall of fire, that never extinguishes, is burning continuously alongside the edge of the hill, which naturally is at its most spectacular at night, when tourists and locals alike view the fire from a nearby teahouse. Local lore states that it was a shepherd that accidentally ignited the fire in the 1950s by tossing a cigarette, and that it has burnt ever since.
It was declared a state protected conservation area in 2007.

2. The Burning Mountain of Australia
Real name Mount Wingen, the mountain is located in New South Wales Australia. It has been burning for 6000 years without stop. Just below the surface of the earth in New South Wales, a coal seam has been burning and slowly moving south along the mountain at a rate of one meter per year. In its history, the seam has covered a total area of 6.5 km, making it the oldest continuous coal fire in the world.

Coal seams are extremely common across the world, and at any time there are more than 1000 burning. They happen frequently in lesser-developed mineral rich countries, but are often put out within a few days or at most a month. Considering the average duration of a coal seam fire, Mount Wingen’s fiery longevity has become something of a wonder across the globe and tourists have flocked to see the sulfur-tinged smoke emanating from the mountain.

The aborigines called the mountain Wingen, which means ‘fire’, and used its heat for warmth in the winter months, for cooking and for the manufacture of tools. They believed that the mountain was set on fire by a tribesman to warn others when the Devil carried him off deep into the earth. European explorers and early settlers knew of the Burning Mountain but they thought the smoke coming out of the ground was volcanic in origin. It was not until 1829 that a geologist identified it as a coal seam fire.

Although Mount Wingen has attracted tourists in droves, it has also caused massive ecological damage to the area’s vegetation. The path of the fire has left a barren and rocky trail, with no traces of life. Most assumed the fire was caused by volcanic activity, but it is now clear coal was ignited by a lightning strike or brush fire thousands of years earlier. The area is administered by NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service and is a natural reserve.

3. Baba Gurgur Oil Field
Baba Gurgur is an oil and gas field, located in the city of Kirkuk in Northern Iraq. It was entitled the world’s largest oil field till the discovery of Ghawar in Saudi Arabia. As per reports, the field has been burning for over 4000 years now.
The field was first discovered by Turkish Petroleum Company, the predecessor of the Iraq Petroleum Company, on October 15 1927, in an attempt to strike oil. This was the first modern oil well in Iraq. When oil was struck, it flowed uncontrollably for several days, thus endangering the environment and habitation in and around the city of Kirkuk. But with time, the oil reservoir proved to have an immensely high producing capacity.

According to the American Journal of Science (1939)
”Near to the wells is a pool of muddy stagnant water, covered with a thick scum deeply tinged with sulphur. A few hundred yards to the east of the top of the same hill is a flat circular spot, 50 feet in diameter, perforated by 100 or more small holes, whence issue clear smokeless flames, smelling strongly of sulphur. In fact, the whole surface of this perforated spot of ground appeared as a crust of sulphur over a body of fire within; the surface being perforated by a dagger, a flame instantly issued, rising, sometimes even higher than the others.”

The Baba Gurgur oil field was described as far back as Herodotus (c. 484–425 BC), the ancient Greek author, and some believe it to be the fiery furnace in the Book of Daniel, of Old Testament, into which King Nebuchadnezzar (630-562 BC), King of Babylon, threw three Jews for refusing to worship his golden idol. The flames have a significant symbolic value for residents of Kirkuk. It is believed that the heat of the eternal flames was used by shepherds to warm their flocks during winter, and women would visit Baba Gurgur, asking to have a baby boy. This ancient practice probably goes back to the time of fire worshipping.

Science/Technology / Gates Of Hell: Check Out Turkmenistan Gas Crater Burning For 48 Years by Bekwarra(m): 11:31pm On Aug 28, 2019
At different times in history, different places have been referred to as the Gate To Hell. These places have at different periods acquired legendary reputation for being the gateway to hell or the underworld.

They were oftentimes found in regions of unusual geological activity, particularly volcanic areas, or sometimes at lakes, caves, or mountains.

These places include but not limited to the cave at the edge of Lake Avernus on the Bay of Naples through which Hercules was believed to have entered the Underworld.

There was also the Lacus Curtius, where according to legend, a Roman soldier, named Curtius, bravely rode his horse into the entrance in a successful effort to close it, although both he and his horse perished in the courageous deed.

Lerna Lake also got a reputation as one of the entrances to the Underworld.Odysseus in Homer’s popular poem also visited the Underworld, entering through river Acheron in northwest Greece.

Orpheus was believed to have traveled to the Greek underworld in search of Eurydice by entering a cave at Taenarumor Cape Tenaron on the southern tip of the Peloponnese.

Pluto’s Gate know as Ploutonion in Greek and Plutonium in Latin located in modern day Turkey was unearthed by Italian archaeologists and is believed to be the entry gate to the Underworld.

The famous Mount Etna in Sicily had the reputation not being the doorway to hell in Medieval times probably due to its volcanic nature.

Urban legend believes Hellam township in Pennsylvania contains the Seven Gates to Hell, while Fengdu in China and Mount Osore in Japan are other places that have enjoyed the unenviable reputation of being the Gate to Hell.

However in modern times, the most popular place to have gained reputation as the gate to hell is the Darvaza Crater, located in the Karakum Desert in the Central Asian country of Turkmenistan.
It has been variously called Door to Hell, Gates of Hell or Gateway to Hell. It is a natural gas field that collapsed into an underground cavern in 1971 and has been burning since then.

The crater is a 5,350 m 2 natural gas field with a diameter of 69 m and a depth of 30 m. After it collapsed into an underground crater, scientists set it on fire to prevent the spread of methane gas and has been burning continuously since then- 48 years and counting.

History

Though technically called the Darvaza gas crater, locals know the crater as “The Gates of Hell.” Its fiery and blazing glow can be seen for miles around.
The Gates of Hell crater was created in 1971 when a Soviet drilling rig accidentally punched into a massive underground natural gas cavern, causing the ground to collapse and the entire drilling rig to fall in. Having punctured a pocket of gas, poisonous fumes began leaking at an alarming rate.
To head off a potential environmental catastrophe, the Soviets set the hole alight, figuring it would stop burning within a few weeks. Decades later, and the fiery pit is still going strong. The Soviet drilling rig is believed to still be down there somewhere, on the other side of the “Gates of Hell.”

Efforts To Put Out The Fire ‌‏

Given that the blaze started in the 1970s when awareness was still low about Methane’s role in climate change and its potency as a greenhouse gas, the Soviet scientists who were there prospecting for oil thought that the burning field posed a huge danger to the environment and the surrounding villages to have poisonous gas leaking from the ground in huge quantities.

They decided that their best option would be to burn off the gas by lighting the crater. Their expectation being that the gas would burn off within a week. They tossed a grenade into the hole and for almost five decades, the crater still continues to burn.

Turkmen President Kurbanguly Berdymukhamedov issued orders for local officials to find a way to put out the fire after he visited the crater in 2010.

The president expressed fears that the fire would draw gas from other nearby drilling sites, damaging Turkmenistan’s vital energy exports as the country exports natural gas to Europe, Russia, China, India, and Pakistan.

In 2004 while flying over Darvaza, former president Saparmurat Niyazov was struck by the magnitude of the fiery fire below. “I don’t want to see this next time I fly over,” he reportedly said. Bulldozers would soon move in, giving the about 3,000 villagers an hour or so to evacuate. Forcibly displaced by soldiers, they knew better than to argue at the time, but a handful of villagers later built another encampment away from the president’s flight path—the new Darvaza village.

Tourist Center

Despite turning out to be a slow-burning ecological disaster, the crater has also become one of Turkmenistan’s few tourist attractions. The crater is slowly but steadily drawing adventurous souls out into the Karakum (meaning dark) Desert, where summer temperatures can reach 50ºC (122ºF) even without any contribution from the Darvaza fire.

The Turkmen government hopes it’ll soon become a huge tourist site as the nearby Karakum Desert itself has already become a popular place to wild camp.

President Took A Spin Close To It To Dispel Death Rumours

Turkmenistan eccentric and stunt loving president Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, earlier this month took a car for a spin close to the gas crater to dispel death rumours which had been flying around for weeks.

Politics / South-West Tops List Of Domestic Debtors, South-East Least Indebted by Bekwarra(m): 4:35am On Aug 20, 2019
South-West tops domestic debtors’ list with N1.04tn

S’East least indebted with N303bn

The South-West has more domestic debt than other regions of the country.

Statistics obtained from the Debt Management Office on Monday showed that the geopolitical zone was exposed to a domestic debt of N1.04tn as of March 31.

The statistics also showed that the six geopolitical zones of the country were exposed to a total domestic debt of N3.97tn as of March 31.

This means that the South-West geopolitical zone of the country accounts for 26.2 per cent of the country’s total subnational domestic debt.

The geopolitical zone is made up of six states – Ondo, Ogun, Oyo, Ekiti, Lagos and Osun. Lagos, the commercial capital of the country accounts for much of the indebtedness of the zone as it has domestic debt of N542.23bn.

Thus, the state, which is the largest subnational economy in the country, accounts for 51.92 per cent of the domestic debt owed by the six states in the South-West.

Osun State with N147.7bn accounts for 14.2 per cent of the indebtedness of the South-West region while Ekiti State with N118.01bn accounts for 11.35 per cent of the domestic debt owed by the South-West geopolitical zone.

Foreign Affairs / Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson Comes Out As Gay by Bekwarra(m): 12:44am On Aug 18, 2019
Longtime Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson came out as gay in a column in the Ottawa Citizen on Saturday, writing that the announcement was “better late than never.”
The 58-year-old wrote he had long struggled with the decision to be open about his sexuality, and considered whether the revelation would affect his relationships with family, friends and constituents.
Watson’s announcement came just a day before the start of Ottawa’s Capital Pride 2019, a weeklong festival.
“As I look back over my life, and in hindsight, not coming out sooner was a big mistake on my part,” he wrote.
Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson has led the capital city of Ontario, Canada, since 2010. He also served as mayor from 1997 to 2000.

Dear Ottawa residents and friends, I have some personal news I wish to share with you. I invite you to read my Op-Ed in today’s @OttawaCitizen: https://www.google.com/amp/s/ottawacitizen.com/opinion/columnists/mayor-jim-watson-after-40-years-im-opening-the-closet-door/amp …#Pride

I was elected to Ottawa City Council when I was 30, and for most of my public life, my sexuality was not an issue. But in hindsight, not coming out sooner was a big mistake.

Watson recalled being bullied in grade school and how his father’s frequent relocation for work made it difficult to make friends in high school. There were virtually no resources for LGBTQ students to seek guidance or help, he wrote, and he couldn’t remember ever meeting an openly gay student before college.

Though his university environment was more liberal, Watson said he was still too shy and reluctant to come to terms with that part of his identity. After graduation, he busied himself with his career.
Watson, who has led Ottawa since 2010 and previously served as mayor from 1997 to 2000, said he was proud of his track record on LGBTQ issues. He voted in favor of same-sex marriage and as a provincial cabinet minister in the early 2000s, he made it easier for same-sex couples to get married. He was also the first Ottawa mayor to march in city’s Pride Parade.
Still, he said he had some regret — and some words of wisdom for others in similar situations.
“But if I can be so bold as to offer one bit of advice to those still in the closet: Don’t feel pressured or rushed to come out, but don’t wait 40 years either,” he wrote. “My reluctance has not allowed me to live my life as full of love and adventure as my gay friends who were bolder and braver than I ever was.”

Foreign Affairs / Tanzanian Politician To Launch Database Of Married Men To Crack Down On Cheating by Bekwarra(m): 12:05am On Aug 17, 2019
The governor of Tanzania’s largest city wants to create a database that tracks married men in the East African region in order to crack down on infidelity and “humiliating” women, he said this week.
Women have been complaining that men are deceiving them by making false promises of marriage, Dar es Salaam regional commissioner Paul Makonda said at a news conference on Monday.
“Our main aim is to relieve pain from these women who are suffering from these cheaters — As a governor, I am not happy to lead women who are sad and heartbroken,” Makonda said, according to The Daily Telegraph .
“If possible, we will set up a database in the regional commissioner’s office in each region that every man who promises a woman marriage, this should be registered in the database which will allow women to check to see whether the person asking is married,” he explained.
The government-run public database would include all married men’s’ names and photos, but other details of such a database — including its legality — remain unclear.
“I have received a lot of complaints from young women. Many women from Dar es Salaam region have been deceived many times, and they have had enough,” Makonda said , according to The Independent. “These charming men have been promising to marry them, then ditch the women after using them. This is something that is humiliating.”

“These cunning men have left many women nursing heartbreaks and emotional bruises,” Makonda added. “You’ll find a young man successfully wooing a woman, making her leave every other thing that she does and follows you, hoping that the man will marry her only to realize he is just using her.”
This would not be the first time Makonda has made a controversial suggestion. Last year he called for citizens to start reporting gay people in Tanzania, where same-sex relationships are illegal.

He said a team of police and other authorities would target gay people, The Guardian reported at the time — but the national government distanced itself from Makonda’s proposal.
“The government of the United Republic of Tanzania would like to clarify that these are [Makonda’s] personal views and not the position of the government,” the foreign affairs ministry had said at the time.

Chinese credit accounts for 80% of all bilateral lending to Nigeria, data from the West Africa nation’s debt management office show. China provides loans to build railways, power plants and airports, helping to bridge a huge infrastructure gap in Africa’s largest oil producer.
